Understanding the Origins of Top Burmese’s Famous Tea Leaf Salad - Eater Portland

"Burmese Delight is a food cart in Portland that offers a version of the traditional Burmese green tea leaf salad. Unlike Top Burmese, Burmese Delight's salad comes in both vegan and non-vegan options and includes both peanuts and fried broad beans. This food cart provides an alternative for those looking to enjoy Burmese cuisine in a more casual setting." - Pamela Pierce

My aunt Patty asked me to write this review for her. She informed me she had met her brother and her family there for lunch that were traveling here from Burma. They hadn't seen each other in many years. Patty told me that the food reminded her of her mother's food. She told me that Mo is a very nice lady and she recommended any one who loves Burmese food to try it out .

Google
Tried the tea leaf salads — they were fresh and flavorful for food cart fare, but the price felt a little too high for the portion size. Worth trying once, but maybe not a repeat for us.

Google
Wow! The food here is delicious. I love that Portland has so many options for food - will definitely be putting this into our takeout rotation. Service staff is also extremely nice; really enjoyed our time here. Can't wait to try out other things on their menu 😊

Google
Love love love this place. The flavors are great, always fresh, its always quick, crispy perfect fries! The eggplant qrap is usually my go to and it never disappoints. Pictured is the chicken because I felt like switching it up and it's also delicious! Also the owner is a sweetie!

Google
Burmese Delight in the Asylum food cart pods serves authentic Burmese food. The Shan Noodle soup was great, lots of noodles with tasty chunks of chicken, and broth that was fantastic. Food was served quickly, even being dinner time, and quite busy.

We ordered a Coconut Chicken Soup here and we absolutely couldn't stop eating! The food was homely, flavorful and an absolute delight. Thank you guys, amazing job!!!

Google
Delicious unique flavors! We got the beef curry, tea leaf salad roll and chickpea salad. Can't wait to go back for more!

Google
They were at a market my partner had a booth at. My partner and in-laws got food they loved from there. I had a vegan item that was pretty good. The most outstanding thing, however, is when I asked for their a tea a special way, due to my being vegan, they not only complied but offered an option they've never made before to try and accommodate me. That was special. It stood out as they were incredibly busy and could have just went a simple route, which I still would have been more than happy with, instead they wanted to treat me well. I'm appreciate that for a long time to come.

Yelp
Was in town on a day trip to Portland and was craving some Burmese food. I found this food truck listing on Google and I'm so glad I did. The prices are very reasonable for a generous serving of food. My go to dish, the fermented tea leaf salad did not disappoint. It was bright, acidic, and vibrant and with a nice crunch from the peanuts and sunflower seeds. The dish paired well with piping hot and crispy vegan samosas with sweet chili sauce. The service was great. Definitely a new favorite!

Yelp
Food 4/5 Service 4/5 Ambiance 5/5 I actually saw this food cart featured in a Mike Chen video, so my bf and I decided to give it a try and it was really good! We originally wanted to try the beef and potato curry, but they were out, so we went with the chicken as an alternative. The dish itself was simple, with just chicken, potatoes, curry sauce, and paratha but it was packed with flavor. The curry's rich taste paired with the tenderness of the chicken was unlike anything I've had before tasted very hearty. To enjoy it, I shredded some chicken and added it to the paratha, along with a little bit of pickled daikon radish and carrot. It made for the perfect bite, as the pickled veggies balanced out the richness. I'll definitely be back to try the beef curry and will continue to keep this spot in mind whenever I'm nearby, good comfort food overall was very satisfied!

Yelp
It's been a while since I've had Burmese food, so I was excited to see Burmese Delight in the little food court. I had a hard time deciding between the chicken samosas, the Shan noodle salad, and the tea leaf salad, but I ended up choosing the tea leaf salad. Unfortunately, this tea leaf salad did not hit the spot. It mostly tasted like fish sauce and sesame oil. I've also never seen corn in this dish when I've had it at other places, and I didn't really care for it. The salad was pretty oily, which is usually fine, but the staff was a bit stingy with napkins and only gave me one, so it was hard to eat cleanly. Maybe I would've had a better experience with the Shan noodle salad or the samosas, but I'm not sure if I'm open to giving this place another chance.

Yelp
Got a chance to check out the Hawthorn Food pod today, and was immediately drawn to this food truck. I got the "Chickpea Tofu Salad" and it was great! Hand crafted pieces of chickpea shaped liked tofu went really well with the other fresh elements on the salad. Also got an appetizer and it was also great! Ayè, the owner I believe was super sweet & friendly!

Yelp
2nd time in a month. We enjoyed the Pork & Tea Leaf Curry. We enjoyed the curry with the delicious coconut rice. Service was fast, friendly and efficient

Yelp
Great food truck in a food truck village. They have maybe a dozen dishes, with clearly marked vegan items, including classic Burmese dishes like a tea leaf salad and Burmese chickpea tofu. We split an order of each, plus a Burmese noodle salad. (Each dish was $12.) The food took a little while to be ready but it was worth the wait. Every dish was fantastic, especially the two classic dishes: wonderfully integrated flavours and textures. Reasonable portions for the price. Fantastic spot.

Yelp
I'm always surprised I haven't reviewed a place when I've been there more than once. The tea leaf salad I had in the past was super hearty with a nice range of textures. I tried the shan noodle salad recently which was quite tasty. I enjoyed the subtle complexity of the dish. It definitely benefited from the hot oil to round out the bright flavors. The noodles were slightly warm with the perfect chew which was lovely on a cold evening.

Yelp
Burmese Delight was a delight to say the least. I had the Shan Noodle Salad and it was full of flavor. The service was amazing and the beautiful young lady that helped me went above and beyond for my order. I wanted an extra kick and she did not disappoint. The place itself was super chill and full of variety. Come and try Burmese Delight for this amazing dish.

Yelp
This truck suffered from a little Portlandization of Burmese flavors, that is to say, the muting of them. My bowl of coconut noodle soup was perfectly serviceable and warm, but nothing particularly standout about it. Pretty tomatoey for a coconut based soup, no discernable fish sauce, with fall-apart noodles. But again, it was tasty enough, if not what I was expecting. Another day I came back to try their special banana cake, which I subsequently took on a hike and which nourished me just as a granola bar would.

Yelp
When I ordered the beef and potato curry I was worried since the chunks are so big I wouldn't be able to eat it without looking like an animal. But the meat fell apart and was SO GOOD. Super quick and the lady was super nice. I can't recommend enough
google avatar

Garet V.

Yelp
Burmese delight is one of our go to spots! Chicken potato curry with paratha and a traditional tea leaf salad always hits the spot! The folks that work the truck are always super friendly and consistent. We love it for takeout or for eating in the Hawthorne asylum. Great outdoor seating in any season with nice fire pits in the middle under a covered roof.

Camille R.

Yelp
Noodle salad was very good. $10. Similar taste to pad thai Chicken curry The creamy soda was very sweet. Cold and refreshing. The flavor was similar to bubble gum. Cake Service was professional. They were patient when answering my questions about the types of salads. Ambiance: the food cart was in Hawthorne Asylum. Parking lot available. $2 all Sunday evening
google avatar

Emma S.

Yelp
So delish! I highly recommend the chickpea tofu salad. The service was a little slow, but other than that it was great!
google avatar

Brandy K.

Yelp
This was my first time trying Burmese food and I thought it was excellent. I had the beef curry with the paratha. It was so good that we came back the next day and had it again! The paratha is so yummy I'm still thinking about it

Yelp
The atmosphere in this restaurant is great and the service is accommodating and on spot. I enjoyed the food they served here, especially the curry snd coconut rice. I'm a big fan of coconut rice since eating it often in Indonesia. They're spot on with their cooking and the desserts are unique and different. Check it out and judge for yourself!

Yelp
WOW Hawthorne Asylum was so so busy on a Sunday afternoon at 3!! I decided on Burmese Delight to try some unique Burmese food. I got the Shan Noodle Salad. The noodles were delicious! A sorta pad Thai-y tasting rice noodle dish with lots of veggies in it. It was sweet and sour and so so satisfying. The portion was very sizable for $10! I also got the Samusar/samosa side which is fried with curry/potatoes inside ($6 for 4) - very tasty and great value. Would highly recommend if you're at the Hawthorne Asylum food trucks! Great value for taste!

Yelp
Food was awesome. Got the beef, potato with coconut rice and parathas. Service took time , about 10 mins, but overall was friendly and good. Find your place seating. Will go again. Toddlers liked the rice and paratha especially
google avatar

Cheryl K.

Yelp
#11 Roll. The Best! Everytime I come into the Portland area, I have to have this roll. The rest of the menu is also Awesome, but the Roll is my favorite.
google avatar

Yoon W.

Yelp
Me and my bf went there , tried a few things. Since we are real Burmeses, our expectations were already high and it did satisfy our needs. The foods were so good and authentic. Highly recommend for that place.
google avatar

Yelp
Don't be deceived because this is a food truck, this place is simply the best Burmese food in Portland hands down! There are other Burmese restaurants in the area but this one is the most authentic. I should know because I'm Burmese. The flavors are up to point and cheaper compared to other restaurants so I heartily recommend this place to everyone who is interested in Burmese food.
google avatar

Amy K.

Yelp
I give this place 10 stars. I only ate one bowl of noodles, and it was enough to tell. I could eat this everyday. It's my first time eating Burmese food. We got the Coconut Chicken Noodle Soup. Holy cow! This blew my mind. The soup is not as red as the photo. It has egg noodle not thin, not thick. Little bits of chicken, cilantro, creamy soup, add dry chili flakes and lime juice. You must try this!
google avatar

Delilah S.

Yelp
authentic tasting burmese food! my boyfriend and i were excited to order so we placed an online order. we went with vegan green tea leaf salad and vegan shan noodles. both were so satisfying. the portions were perfect to share. we enjoyed every last bite! the staff is sooo kind and friendly! the food is absolutely worth trying. especially if you're a fan of garlic and lime! trust me, you'll be back for more!
google avatar

Cassidy K.

Yelp
Needed a snack to tie me over for the afternoon so my boyfriend and I stopped here and shared the wrap and banana bread. We had never had Burmese Food before absolutely loved it. So many textures going on in the wrap and the flavor was deciduous. Nice and light. The banana bread was moist and flavorful. Highly recommend!
google avatar

Paul L.

Yelp
After a sushi burrito at Rollin' Fresh last month, I was motivated to do the short 30-second walk to Burmese Delight even faster because I was eager to get some banana cake. I hope that Burmese Delight makes it through this pandemic successfully.
google avatar

Andrew A.

Yelp
The creamy soda has a honeydew flavor and includes tiny tapioca beads. Creative drink. I think they complete orders in sequence they're taken, so my simple drink took long to make as there were large food orders ahead of me. The portion is small, but so is the price.
google avatar

Ronald A.

Yelp
Stoped in this pod Looking for something else and ordered when my first choice was not there. Lucky me. I ordered the Shan soup, one mild and the other spices. This is their version of chicken noodle soup. Best version yet. The food came quickly. The service was friendly and quick. The soup had great flavor. Having peanuts added as a treat. I would get the mild next time. It was not too spicy, but I think the flavor of the mild version was better. In any event, this was a great fine. Yes, it exceeded expectations and I intend to explore the menu again. Try it.

Peter S.

Yelp
Food was DELICIOUS! Do yourself a favor and unlock a new flavors. Beef & Potato curry with flaky buttery paratha with a great pickled slaw on the side. Farina cake was also super homy and delicious. Owners are so helpful and more than willing to describe their Burmese dishes with you!
google avatar

Yelp
I loved this cart! My first time trying Burmese food and I am ready to go back! I had the "Coconut Chicken Soup," and it was so comfort foody! Tasted like a shredded chicken sandwich in a bowl. The portions were large and delish and the owner was very friendly. Now I am craving another bowl!
google avatar

Tyler B.

Yelp
My studio used to be super close to this food cart and I got absolutely hooked on the Shan noodle soup. It's fantastic. I was getting it multiple times a week for months. I still come back to get it. There's so much love in the food and you can tell. Great service! And the buzz at the asylum is great too. The back area is heated better then the fire fyi. Enjoy!
google avatar

Charlie T.

Yelp
I was curious to check this cart out and was not disappointed. The challenge was trying to figure out what to order. I ended up getting the #2 Beef and Potato Curry with the paratha (flat bread). The meal was very flavorful with the beef being very tender. It reminds me of the beef stew my mom makes, just not as soupy, but dry. The potatoes were also easy to eat and had the flavor of the meat soaked in it. The paratha was a good touch. The only thing I would like to see is that there be less grease/oil on the food, other than that it was a pretty good meal.
google avatar

Sushma S.

Yelp
Ordered the green tea leaf salad (vegan). It was okay, I think something was off about the taste, can't really point it out. I wouldn't really order it again.

Yelp
I moved here from the Bay Area about 4 months ago and have had a hard time finding good Asian food!! So far, I've found the Asian food here to be on the bland side and "spicy" to not actually be spicy at all because they tend to cater to the majority. This place does such a good job of keeping the robust, hearty, comforting flavors in their dishes without being overpowering. I ordered the Tofu Noodle Salad. It was so good! I loved the texture of the noodles and there was a crunch from some ingredient that I couldn't get enough of. I'm looking forward to coming back and trying more dishes off the menu.
google avatar

Lily Y.

Yelp
Ordered the green tea leaf salad and the green tea leaf salad roll. I love Burmese green tea leaf salads, which are usually really difficult to find! This place makes them well so I would recommend! The salad itself was quite spicy though so if you can't tolerate spicy, I would recommend asking them if they can me it non-spicy. The portion is quite large which is good, and the salad is tasty. You can't really taste the tea leaf, but it has a distinct roasted flavor. What I love about the salad is that it has a lot of different ingredients that are crunchy such as peanuts, tomato, cabbage, and sesame seeds. It's a pretty flavorful salad, so make sure you have a drink with you! If you've never tried Burmese food, I would recommend this salad! Service: the people at this food cart were extremely nice. They gave us some samples of the banana cake, which is also quite delicious! It tastes like banana bread but with a chewier, gelatin like texture. Interior: this food card is located in a fairly new food cart location. It's next to stalls with drink from many different cultures. I recommend trying a bit of food from each stall! Seating is communal in the center of the food carts. There is a fireplace to keep warm if you come here at night! It's all outdoors. So don't come in the rain, unless you order for takeout!
google avatar

Dana S.

Yelp
Hooray! Burmese food has come to Portland! Everything at the cart is made from scratch by some really nice ladies, and most things can be prepared gluten free. The tea leaf salad was great, and they gave us a sample of traditional tea, which is similar to a less-spicy chai. The soups also look great, and that's what I'm going to try next time. So happy to have found this cart today!
google avatar

Shweta S.

Yelp
Great food and the owner is very nice! Got the chickpea tofu salad and was perfect for a hot afternoon snack!

Yelp
Tried Coconut chicken noodle soup on a balmy fall evening, lovely flavors..just what we needed. Owners do a great job with Covid protocols.

Yelp
Tasty, fast, polite, generous, interesting flavors, adequate spice.Vegan Shan Noodles
google avatar

Nyla P.

Yelp
Friendly and fast service. Try the Shan noodles in salad or soup form and the green tea leaf salad and while your at it throw in an order of samusar to get a variety of the delights! When the weather is nice it's really enjoyable to eat at the pod but they are also on the delivery apps. Enjoy!
google avatar

Atif A.

Yelp
Absolutely delicious. So glad we have excellent Burmese options in Portland now. The tea leaf salad and samosas are going to keep me coming back.
google avatar

Liya J.

Yelp
Got the chicken and potato curry. It was simple but really delightful. Like perfect home cooking. I immediately wanted to go home and figure out how to make it myself. If I'm ever back in Portland, I definitely want to try more! The ladies working here were also super cute and nice!

Jamal M.

Yelp
I came to the food court on Madison bummed that the Korean food truck was closed, but this place quickly caught my eye. The chick working the register was super nice and the prices are pretty solid. I got the Shan Noodle Salad #13, it came out quick and it was absolutely delicious. Crazy good and easy to take on the go if needed.

Jack K.

Yelp
Been to the food truck court on Madison Ave a few times and this is my new favorite place there! Really helpful and engaging service helped me decide on the tofu noodle salad which was awesome--almost like pad thai mixed with chinese sweet noodles-- and vegan! Glad I got to eat here on my quick Spring trip into PDX.
google avatar

Jody T.

Yelp
29July20 @ noon Had a couple of chicken with potato curry delivered. One with coconut rice the other with paratha. The rice and pickled veggies were good but the mains were not so flavorful. Didn't care for whatever the type of curry was and it just didn't taste good. Also the price of $13.50 was, in our opinion quite high, especially given the lack of good flavor.
google avatar

Samantha E.

Yelp
I love this food truck (and the one on Division!). I'm gluten-free and they are always very clear with me about what can be made gluten-free and what can't. They also often ask if I'm vegan because one of the dishes I like can be made with or without fish sauce. I really appreciate the consideration! The food is also amazing, so many flavors and textures! I particularly love the tea leaf salad and wrap. The folks who run the cart are also beyond kind. I messed up my order tonight (ordered the tea leaf salad instead of the wrap! opps) and they came and found me at my seat to give me some rice on the house so my dish would be more like the wrap. Totally unnecessary and super kind and thoughtful. I loved this place already but now I love it even more.

Sooz K.

Yelp
I don't usually write reviews but had to for Burmese Delight. I made my first Portland food cart visit last week and my trip started-and ended-with the Shan Noodle soup (#9) because it was that good! Everything in the deliciously rich broth from the chicken morsels to the grated carrots was so fresh. The noodles were perfectly cooked, holding on to the desired chewiness until the last bite. There's a crunch from peanuts and sesame to satisfy more senses. And if you are a fan of spicy, on my second trip I asked for some chilis just to say I tried something different, ha! which added another level of flavor that makes me want to fly back for round 3!

Yelp
Wow. Just spent $12 + tip on the curry tofu meal. It consisted of about a pound of tofu, some lame sauce I guess was tomato based and very mildly seasoned (absolutely nothing like any curry I've ever had, not sure how it qualifies as curry), a few tbsp oil, and a grain choice: rices or a fry bread, and a small amount of ginger spiced quick pickled daikon I think. Maybe I picked the wrong thing but this was really lackluster and well overpriced. I'll have to try something else sometime and report back. Cart food is supposed to be cheap. I dine out all the time and rarely spend over $10. So when I do and it's at a cart, it needs to be excellent. This seems to be the new trend for carts: pricing like a restaurant and not offering half the quality. If this cart were to compete downtown with the original carts their prices would have to be in half. If their rent is really that much more they should look elsewhere. Seems most the carts in this pod are way overpriced but a few are somehow making it work without being a complete rip off. If the owner is reading this I must wonder: have you ever tried to eat this dish? I rarely waste food but had to throw half of this thing away. Would you consider buying this dish if it were offered elsewhere? What would you pay for it?
google avatar

Stefani M.

Yelp
Wow! The tea leaf salad was absolutely delicious! Thank you for taking me back and bringing your delicious cuisine to Portland. I'll be back!
google avatar

Yelp
Excellent tea leaf salad - really good fast service. There is quite a lot of dressing so next time I might ask for it on the side- but some people might like more dressing so it's just a preference.
google avatar

Hannah S.

Yelp
Delicious coconut rice and pickles with the beef entree, next time want to try the vegetarian entree for variety. Salad roll achieved Taco Bell Burrito Supreme proportion perfection which met a need we didn't know we had.
