The Best New Restaurants in Minneapolis and St. Paul, May 2025 | Eater Twin Cities

"Crispy fried chicken sandwich and wing slinger Burt Chicken Cafe has officially taken over the East Side Bar space as of November. The restaurant is working towards acquiring a liquor license, but in the meantime, folks can feast on Nashville hot chicken sandwiches, smoked wings, and jambalaya fried rice for dine-in and carryout with online ordering. — Brenna Houck" - Serena Maria Daniels

Burnt Chicken Is Opening With Fried Chicken Sandwiches on St. Paul’s East Side | Eater Twin Cities

"After building a local following through pop-ups at BlackStack Brewing and a residency at First Draft Tap Haus (which closed in January), Burnt Chicken is opening a new restaurant on St. Paul's Payne Avenue in the former East Side Bar space. Chef Bernard Collins announced the move on Instagram on September 11, saying he's “very happy, I'm excited as hell” and that he's been preparing to come back. No official menu has been released yet, but it's fair to expect more of Burnt Chicken's impeccably crispy fried chicken sandwiches (served hot and/or slathered in sauce), glazed and dry-rub wings, Cajun- and Creole-influenced fare like chicken matcha po’ boys, and more; look for a soft opening near the end of October or early November and a grand opening sometime after that." - Justine Jones

This is a new hole in the wall restaurant that we found and I'm so glad I went. Small joint, cute kid server with great manners and and top-notch service. My partner ordered the catfish po boy which looked and tasted amazing! It's enough to share with two people. I originally had the jambalaya and although it smelled great and came loaded with sausages, the rice was a bit undercooked. The chef and owner of the restaurant immediately replaced my meal, with no issue and brought me out the best burger I've had in a long time. I will no doubt be back again to support this black owned business, especially since they went out there way to make sure I had a pleasant experience. We all deserve a little bit of grace and the opportunity to grow. Shout out to them!

Google
Ordered Smoked Wings and Mac N Cheese for take out. The wings were nice size had a great smoke to them with their Grumpy Legba seasoning for a dry rub had great steakhouse flavor. Mac N Cheese had a good cheesy blend to it and a pretty good portion for the price. It’s Family owned that has a passion for Cajun/Creole and soul food fusion. They’re looking at getting their liquor license, making seasonal changes with the menu, and doing some Brunch Service. This place will grow if you give them a chance. Give your taste buds a reward, and tell them JD Minneapolis sent you.

Burnt Chicken is a hidden gem of an eatery that serves delicious food with generous portions and friendly service! We dined on the Nashville Hot Chicken sandwich, the Jambalaya Fried Rice, the gigantic Shrimp Po'boy, and PeeWee's Smashburger (recommended by PeeWee himself). All were big hits as were the Cajun fries. Definitely worth many return visits. On my return visit, I enjoyed a fantastic Philly Cheesesteak sandwich. The beef, melted cheese, peppers, and onions are piled high on a terrific French baguette from Trung Nam bakery. The garlic aioli spread added a flavorful touch.

Google
First time trying, and it did not disappoint. The Nashville Chicken sandwich ($13) was a sizeable piece of chicken. I often think these kind of sandwiches have dryer chicken. This wasn't dry. I might have liked a little more sauce on it, but the flavor was good. I had the Catfish Po'boy ($18) the next day. I tried a couple pieces of the fish rightaway and it was good. Although it tasted pretty good reheated, I suspect it would have been a lot better eating it fresh. It was a nice size po'boy, well stuffed. I wish it came with some sort of hot sauce (maybe that's extra?). I'm guessing the other food is good, and will update this when I try this again. I had ordered online, worked pretty well. There was no tip option online (that I saw), had to give a cash tip.

We walked in right when they opened and was seated right away. I have been wanting to eat here and was in the area. We got the double smash which was amazing. Just a tad bit on the salty side but the beef delicious. The side of mac and cheese alone is worth coming back for. The wife got the cheese steak and this thing was huge and the french baguette was fresh. Well seasoned and tasted phenomenal. The fries were hot, crunchy and tasty. Service was great. The young lady was very welcoming and attentive. A very good experience. My only complaint was the cold plate our food was served on. It made both the bun and baguette cold. We will be back!!!!

My wife and I had been hearing a lot about this St Paul hidden gem, so we finally decided to check it out for ourselves. When we walked in, it wasn’t too busy, which I actually liked. A young man greeted us right away and gave us the option of a booth or a table, we went with a booth. He came back shortly after to take our drink order. I asked about the hibiscus lemonade, and when he said it was really good, I gave it a try. My wife got a Diet Coke. For food, we shared the Cajun mac and cheese, she ordered the voodoo smash burger, and I went with the Nashville hot chicken sandwich. It took a little while for the food to come out, and there was a small mix-up with the order, however they fixed it quickly and made things right. The food was excellent, seasoned perfectly and full of flavor. My chicken sandwich had the perfect amount of spice, and my wife really liked her burger. She’s already talking about wanting to come back and try more things off the menu. The place itself has a cozy, slightly old-school vibe that we both liked. Everything looked clean, and the young man who helped us was polite, attentive and helpful. Even with the little hiccup, they handled it well, and that goes a long way with me. Overall, it was a great experience, and we’ll definitely return.

Yelp
I checked out Burnt Chicken and this spot was an ultimate vibe. From the moment you walk in, it feels like a true Black-owned spot with great energy and flavor all around. I tried three items including the Nashville hot chicken sandwich, which had a fire rub and a tasty sauce on the side. The mac and cheese was nice and creamy, and the banana foster made for the perfect dessert to finish off the night. There's street parking available, and the prices are pretty good, not too expensive at all. The service was dope and the employees were super nice, which made the experience even better. I'll definitely be back to try more from the menu.

Yelp
This place was so fun! I want to start off by saying the chicken was wonderfully juicy and crispy. If that is what you are looking for I cannot recommend it enough. I wasn't too impressed by the fries, and the sauce/toppings on the sandwich weren't quite as good as the chicken itself. I would say it's priced fairly I got a full stomach (and I can eat a lot) for under 20 dollars which for this quality of food is solid. It was cozy and the service was good as well. No complaints there!

Yelp
Highly underrated spot of the East side! Friendly people who care about bringing good food and experiences to the community and I'm happy to keep supporting them. I was so happy to see this place open and everyone I recommend it to loves it. Unfortunately the only parking is street parking which can be hard on Payne but it's well worth it.

Yelp
This is my go to for a chicken sandwich! The portions are TEXAS SIZE!! This is good eating!

Yelp
Honestly, it is the best spicey chicken sandwich I've ever had. It was perfection. Perfect amount of spice, the pickles, the coleslaw, on a toasted bun. The food took a long time to come out, and the staff could have been happier and more helpful. The staff was grumpy, but the chef was happy and having a great time... often welcoming people coming in and saying bye as they leave (all from behind the stove).

Yelp
Heard about this place and finally got to visit. There was street parking and it was kind of hard to find because theres no sign, but I'm sure they will fix that. Ordered 2 orders of wings, mac n cheese, and jambalaya rice. Everything was good flavor wise, the rice was a little undercooked in spots but the flavor was there. The bar isn't set up yet so for drinks I got a bottle of water and a can of coke. Staff was very friendly and even the cook spoke with us. From what I know, this is newly opened, so this review was primarily about the food since they still need to get the bar up and running. Hopefully they spruce up the place to add some of their personal branding. Wouldn't mind going back in the future to try the sandwiches.

Yelp
I met up with my cousin at this new restaurant and food is delicious. We ordered the bourbon chicken sandwich and Nashville hot chicken sandwich. Both patties were fried to perfection, big slices, crispy and juicy. Our server was very attentive and checked in on us often. The dry rub wings were also delicious, has a kick to it also. Restaurant is actually big, lots of tables to accommodate groups and seating at the bar also available.

Yelp
Had a wonderful time at Burnt Chicken! We tried the fried chicken sandwich and Cajun fries, the Mac and cheese, and the shrimp po boy. Absolutely delicious! The food was flavorful, well seasoned, and crispy. The po boy had a generous amount of shrimp. Great service and enjoyed the ambiance.

Yelp
This place just opened and is working out some start up growing pains. They don't appear to have their liquor license. The menu only had food options. They looked like they had ice teas or lemonades on the bar, but our server only offered us waters. The place is super cute with a fair amount of small to medium party tables. They do have a parking lot in the back. The chicken was crispy and the burger was juicy. Fries are ala carte. We did wait about 45 minutes to get food when we were one of only a few tables in the ordering phase.

Yelp
Burnt chicken is the place if you want a hot and fresh meal, service is always fast and incredible they always make sure to refill your glass of water and ask if you need anything. Also make sure to say hi to Bearnard the chef. (the brilliant mastermind behind the mouth watering food) They always have really good music playing and youre able to watch your meal be prepared. Make sure to give this place a try

Yelp
We love this restaurant and Chef. We have been following him for some time and are thrilled he has his own place now. Food is made with quality ingredients and portion sizes are great for the price.

Yelp
Great food with friendly service! We had wings and the Nashville chicken sandwiches, which were both very tasty. The space is cool, with a beautiful wooden bar. No liquor license yet but they're working on it.

Yelp
LIGHTS OUT. We got the Cajun Mac and cheese, Cajun fries and Nashville chicken sandwich. This is a gem of a spot that everyone needs to visit. For the record the soundtrack playing during our meal kept the vibe perfect as we visited here for the first time. Can not wait for visit #2, visit #3 and beyond!

Yelp
Cute little spot with a cozy vibe--we'll definitely be coming back! The food was absolutely delicious. We tried the Nashville chicken sandwich, which had the perfect amount of heat, and the Cajun mac n cheese topped with grilled shrimp was creamy, flavorful, and super satisfying. Bonus: there's parking in the back, which makes things extra convenient. Can't wait to return and try more off the menu!

Yelp
Had the catfish po'noy, cajun fries and hibiscus iced tea. It was all delicious- so nice to have a good Cajun restaurant in St. Paul! Highly recommend!

Yelp
Food: Phenomenal! They offer a variety of classic dishes! They did have a spring menu that included burgers, salads and more which were absolutely delicious! They also serve a fantastic Nashville hot chicken sandwich and the bawk bawk fries! Everything is prepared fresh and well seasoned. Ambience: It's a casual spot that you could grab a drink and enjoy some good food. Service: absolutely incredible! The chef and the first draft crew are very attentive. Overall, I highly recommend you check this spot out!

Yelp
Fire chicken sandwich. Mac and cheese was also very good. Highly recommend. The service was exceptional for only 2 people working that day. Parking wasn't intuitive and wasn't sure if there was a parking lot but there was street parking.

Michael C.

Yelp
Nice interior. Food was excellent. We got both the chicken sandwiches and the Mac and cheese. Everything was well prepared and flavorful. Service as also good.

Erin C.

Yelp
The signs say ESB bar but its the restaurant inside. 4 of us had such a good dinner, not a single item was ho-hum! The burger was one of the best in the Cities and the chicken sandwiches were unbelievable. Mac and cheese + catfish po'boy were so good.

Yelp
Absolutely loved our first visit! Double date night, and my wife and I got there right when it opened at 4:30. Started with a heaping portion of Cajun Fries which were fantastic. Crispy and piping hot. When our friends arrived, we split an order of the Cajun and Frogtown wings. I preferred the Frogtown wings (Cajun were awesome too), but the Frogtown wings were sweet, and super sticky. You at first got a taste of the seasoning but finished with a smoky flavor. Waitress said that chef Bernard really babies his wings. For the main course, my wife got the Peewee Burger, and both myself and the other couple got the Nashville Chicken Sandwich. Holy moly, the sandwich was UNREAL. Perfect spice, and thankfully not drenched in some generic hot sauce, great balance. We all split the Mac and Cheese which was tasty too. We finished with a crazy large portion of a Banana Foster French Toast, which we all devoured even though we were beyond full. This spot was exactly what I was hoping for and we'll definitely be back. Thank you BC team!!!

Corrina C.

Yelp
This was a happy accident. We went to go somewhere else and it didn't work out, had already paid for parking so came here. The man at the front said they had better food and he did not lie. The chef brought out some chips for my kid and told us they started as a food truck and it was the one year anniversary of being in this spot, he has also won best fried chicken twice. I haven't eaten meat in about a year but after talking to the him and looking at everyone else's I had to try it. The portions are huge, you can definitely share and have plenty, the fried chicken tenders and chicken sandwich are flavor infused and not dry, macaroni and cheese was cheesy without being greasy, the truffle fries are tasty and the sauces are on point. The aatmosphere is chill and the music was good. We will come back and Happy Anniversary to you chef.
