Burrito Express Review - South Park - Seattle - The Infatuation

"Burrito Express is the best thing to happen to a parking lot since the parking lot was first invented. This spot on South Cloverdale in South Park exclusively serves Mexican breakfast from 7am-11am, and we’re huge fans. The tortillas are tightly wrapped like a swaddled newborn baby, the eggs have pristine curds without being overcooked or runny, and their salsas (get the smoky) have a tremendous acidity-to-spice ratio. You’re in great hands with anything involving their tangy chorizo, but the best burrito on the truck is their Sauced Pig, complete with pork bits simmered in salsa verde, perfectly-salted creamy pinto beans, tiny fried potato cubes, and the option to add cheese (do it). While they’re preparing your order, run across the street for a latte at Resistencia." - Aimee Rizzo

Google
Absolutely great experience. Food was very fresh and great tasting. The young ladies at the counter were so charismatic!

Sam Goldberg

Google
My al pastor and barbacoa tacos were dope. Grilled Jalapeño on the side for the win!

Google
Everything was great it was like going down memory lane grown up in Chicagoland. This is your old school place. The dine in service was great.. The atmosphere made me feel like I was back in high school...

Jade Jenkins

Google
The foods quality went down. I get the same order every single time & it’s been so disappointing lately. What was once the best salsa verde in the area is now just hot and sour (like vinegar), tacos are still good, but often salty, and the tamales are a hit or miss.

Anitra Rogers

Google
I Stopped by for tacos because my usual "Taco Tuesday" plans changed. I was not disappointed! The tacos were very flavorful and full of meat that was tender and juicy! The service was fast as well! I definitely will be back!

Erynn Jeter

Google
I ordered some tacos about 30 minutes before the place closed. I should have known better ordering right before a placed closed but we wanted tacos and they were open. I ordered 5 steak tacos WITH cheese. Was charged 1.75 for the cheese but not one of those 5 tacos had cheese on it. I cannot call back right now because they are closed but I will definitely call in the morning. Update: I called them the next day and my order was remade for free. I appreciate the free food and apology.

Google
Ordering was simple and easy. Food didn't take long. Everything we ordered was hot and tasted good.

Google
Steak tacos dinner was fye, and meat was seasoned well. I also like the rice, beans, cheese fries and pico de gallo, and chip. That's all I tried so far. The burrito is next.

Yelp
Not sure why this place is only rated 3 stars (at the time of this review). I grew up in Northern California (and went to college in Southern California) and I think the food here is positively delicious. Hole-in-the-wall feel, positively delicious tacos, legit horchata, service was nothing to complain about either. On my last visit, I got lamb tacos and al pastor tacos, and felt like they knocked it out of the park! Haven't tried anything else, but I'm definitely coming back to sample more of the menu.

Yelp
The prices for a burrito have gone up exponentially. Cheese is no longer included. If you would like to add cheese, it's an extra 1,95. So. Basically a 50% increase. I love to support local. You're not fooling anyone. Good luck. Long time fan, never again caller.

Yelp
Love burrito express. Been coming here for 10+ years. The food is real cheap - $2.95 for a chicken taco and they're loaded. The burritos are huge tho I haven't had one in a while so I can't speak to their deliciousness I remember them being pretty outstanding tho. It's a bit of a hole in the wall type place- small without frills which is one thing I love about it, but kinda makes it easy to forget about. Great people, quick service, and good food

Jeff B.

Yelp
East Chicago back alley tacos for north side yuppie prices bullshit ...the steak is greasy an chewy and for 10.62 a 40% increase not worth it go to Taco Bell

Felicia W.

Yelp
Burrito express clearly has changed hands recently the new owners started out with shrimp tacos at $3.60 per taco a month later I guess it was going well they changed the price to four $4.50 Cent today I ordered two shrimp tacos it was over nine dollars they literally gave me three tiny shrimp. And they get the order wrong often. I personally will never step foot in the door again. It's unfortunate they came into a good thing and they're ruining it by doing a dis service to their customers. I remember the lines being out the door there's a reason why the place is empty now! Don't support businesses that aren't fair to their customers! Don't buy from burrito express!

Yelp
I tried the chorizo torts and it was delicious and they had wonderful service. And the decorations were nice and the staff were just wonderful.

Jay D.

Yelp
Burrito express is simply not on par with the other mexican places in this town. The service is just okay. There is definitely better options in homewood. For being called burrito express it was not a very good burrito and it was slow.

Yelp
An excellent meal for the price!! Anyone in the area looking for a quick genuine mexican meal should go here.

Yelp
Can't handle Cinco de Mayo Well, I just tasted a chicken flauta for the first time and it wasn't bad at all but.... Ordered: 2 steak flauta dinners cheese and lettuce only with fries One steak taco on corn cheese and lettuce only. One steak taco on corn onion and cilantro only. One chicken burrito no tomato. Received: 2 steak taco dinners cheese and lettuce only on flour. Possibly the chicken burrito. They told us to keep the tacos "on the house" and gave us chicken flautas ". No pics but ummm....

Lindsey H.

Yelp
whoever was on lunch yesterday absolutely slayed our tacos and elote. it was truly delicious, flavors were immaculate. this will be our new go-to taco spot in the homewood area for sure
google avatar

Alzetta H.

Yelp
The best tacos in the area. Meat is well seasoned. Rice and beans even very tasty. Service is polite and relatively fast. Establishment is very outdated and gloomy. I always order carry out.

Tammy S.

Yelp
I ordered steak nachos with fresh jalapeños. When I got home with my order, I got pickled jalapeños and they forgot the lettuce and the tomato from my order. So basically, I got some steak, cheddar cheese, dripped on it, sour cream, and pickled jalapeños. I called to complain about my order being wrong and I told them I wanted to return the product and get a refund. They told me that they do not do refunds even though the cook had screwed up many other orders that same day. The amount of food that I received for the price was not even proportionate. When they first opened, they were a good company. Now they take advantage of their customers and don't make things right when they are the ones who made the mistake. I give them zero stars. There are too many Mexican restaurants around now for them to act so selfishly.

Jim M.

Yelp
The absolute best place around for tacos..I always get the steak tacos on soft corn..The employees are always friendly and prompt..

Gaming _.

Yelp
I get the steak and chicken tocos all the time when I'm stoned wit my friends . The employees are super friendly and the prices are great! Overall great spot!

Joe J.

Yelp
Great place. Only place to get Mexican food in the area. A few more words to satisfy yelp.
google avatar

Arlaina G.

Yelp
These burritos had my boyfriend and I on the toilet NONSTOP. I don't know what is in them, but they are NOT friendly to the body.... and they weren't even that good! Especially for the price. Do not go here. I don't know if anyone has had the same experience.

Yelp
Came here with a friend for lunch after he vouched for their food. We went during the lunch rush, so all the tables were packed, though turnover was good so we didnt have too long to get a seat. This unassuming little spot in downtown Homewood has some solid Mexican food! We ordered a steak platter with peppers and onions along with rice and refried beans. I ended up ordering extra beans because they were so good! Service was fine, and this place isn't fancy, but the food is worth a return trip.

Lydia T.

Yelp
Great steak tacos and steak fajitas, it's our local go to for Mexican takeout cuisine! Give it a try!
google avatar

Sam N.

Yelp
Ironically Burrito Express has by far the best hamburgers in the area. Order ahead, walk in and right out.
google avatar

Belisia R.

Yelp
Awful, awful, awful. Blandest food ever. Never going again. What a waste of money that was. Dry rice, awful refried beans. Just horrible. I don't know if they had a change during the pandemic but if so, it was for the worst. Had food there last year, I don't know what happened.
google avatar

Nancy W.

Yelp
Great food and carry out service. Dont be fooled because it's not extravagant, focus on the food! Excellent quality and price for family size orders.
google avatar

Roy K.

Yelp
The food is always good. Had a steak burrito and it was fresh and good. What impressed me today was the service. They we're pretty busy 12:30 lunchtime, but an extra person stepped up to the counter and took my order right away. I got my drink out of the cooler and before I got to my table, a waitress beat me there with chips and salsa. My napkin fell on the floor and before I could pick it up and sit back up, the waitress was handing me a new one. That was amazing. What more can you ask for?
google avatar

Carly W.

Yelp
Huge burritos and delish chicken fajitas! I only selfishly wish they had homemade corn tortillas. We always order take out.. very affordable and quick cooking times. Something for everyone in the family

Joshua C.

Yelp
I was truly disappointed in this item. The rice and beans were good but the steak inside my chimichanga seemed old like it was frozen and then thawed out. It was super watery and greasy which made the entire thing fall apart. I was starving from not eating all day so I just eat the rice and beans and tortilla. I came here after trying their tacos which were pretty good. I probably won't go back again after this..
google avatar

Alejandro C.

Yelp
$2 tacos that can most definitely not beat anywhere in this area. The food is authentic and the salsas are flavorful. The customer service is really great because even though they're busy they will make sure everything is good and you're taken care of!

G W.

Yelp
I purchased 3 beef tacos from burrito express. The meat tasted gamey as if it was some other kind of meat that was made to look like ground beef. I won't return there. I will go to taco bell before I ever purchase food at Burrito Express. These mom and pop businesses are trying to make that dollar stretch in this pandemic by serving poor man meat as if we are a third world country. That wasn't ground beef.
google avatar

Aurora A.

Yelp
Still wish the menu was bigger but it's my go to for Mexican food. The chilaquiles in salsa verde are superb!

Precious G.

Yelp
For $2.50 a taco I expect a regular size taco and not a street size taco. The food is good but they are over charging! Literally only two bites out of each taco.

Yelp
I haven't had Mexican food in a very long time. My sister and I were in the area and decided to pay a visit. Inside was nice and clean with your basic Latin decor, not much else. Waitresses looked unhappy. Now the food was a different matter. Upon seating, we were given chips and salsa. That gets one star. I ordered a chicken chimichunga dinner with a corn in a cup (corn mixed with mayo, hot spice, and cheese sprinkled on top - served in a paper cup) and my sister ordered two beef tamales. The server brought my corn in a cup, not in a cup, but on plate. The corn on a plate wasn't to bad so it gets one star. My sister's beef tamales were bad. Small and hardly not worth it to appease a hungry appetite. My response to sum up how bad they were: "where's the beef?" The tamales were so laughingly pathetic, that the tamales sold at Food4less in Chicago Heights are better. Lastly, the chimichunga dinner. The dinner came with the standard boxed spanish rice with zero flavor and sodium enriched refried beans with a small speck of cheese sprinkled on top. The outside of the chimichunga was nice and crispy. Cutting open the chimichunga it didn't even look fresh at all but like pig slop. It looked like they took a few days old burrito and just quickly deep fried it, hence the name "burrito express". There wasn't that much filling to begin with let alone the lack of chicken and the over abundance of deep fried tortilla. Soggy lettuce, beans, rice, a few chicken pieces, cheese, a huge tablespoon of salt and (no sour cream?) .....definitely not worth 9.25 Over all, i wish I would of just bought taco bell instead. At least I know it's not real mexican. But this place, who are you fooling? Wouldn't recommend.
google avatar

Kirk S.

Yelp
This is authentic food. Steak tacos are the best I've had and the horchata (rice milk) is fresh and delicious.

Harriet T.

Yelp
LOL I'm stating facts- DO NOT GO HERE PAST 2PM. Food after that time period is so salty you'll throw it away because they re-use the same oil/grease ALL day. They do not change it until a new day.
google avatar

Kaitlyn W.

Yelp
This place was soo delicious. I love Mexican food so I was excited to try this out, as I have been meaning to for a while. I ordered 2 steak tacos and a steak sope, along with rice and beans. The food was cooked perfectly, and tasted amazing. The only reason I did not give it 5 stars is because I ordered and paid for a horchata and did not receive it. Although, it's also my fault for not realizing before leaving. Anyways--I will be returning!!
google avatar

Shaakira J.

Yelp
Nasty as hell! OMG My job loves to order from here- but the food sucks! It's like warm slop all mixed together. No matter what you order- the food looks and tastes the same. Eww!! Yuck. Wish I could give them NO stars... I love Mexican food, this place is HORRIBLE.
google avatar

Tony D.

Yelp
Seriously, I find that most people have a very skewed idea of what Mexican should taste like, most of which are extremely Americanized. That said, Burrito Express is your best bang for your buck, the Birria is fantastic, there salsa and hot sauces are authentic and delicious, and the staff are quite pleasant. This is a very "at home" place in an older building, but don't be fooled by ignorant pallets, try it for yourself! P.S. The Horchata is actually pretty good....
google avatar

Yelp
Conveniently located in downtown Homewood just across the street from the local library, Burrito Express is a conveniently located mostly-Mexican restaurant. Aside from the standard fare of tacos, burritos, and the like, they serve a handful of more generic dishes such as hamburgers, cheeseburgers, hot dogs, and fish. Despite a diverse menu and friendly staff, the food at Burrito Express is sorely lacking. Although they start promising with pretty good chips and salsa, the meals were not pleasing. I had a cheese quesadilla dinner, with pretty awful quesadillas soaking in grease that dripped everywhere. The rice was flavorless and bland, and the beans were overwhelmingly mediocre. There was a minor bright spot in the hot sauce, but I was overall displeased with my meal. Based on anecdotal evidence from someone who joined me, the meat is pretty gross. The steak burrito was mediocre, with the meat being overly fatty and greasy, making for a pretty unpleasing burrito. Although it isn't the worst Mexican food I have ever had, I won't be at Burrito Express again, being that the much better Burrito Station is only a mile away.

Yelp
I love good Mexican food, and this place has all of the offerings at a really great price. Among my favorites are the El Pastor Tacos and Sopes. I have tried a lot of different dishes here and really have enjoyed all of them! The portion sizes are very nice, tacos are generous with meats and toppings, and they will add cheese if that's your thing. Definitely give them a try if you have not already! I can't imagine anyone not liking them, especially if you like real authentic Mexican food!

Gabriel R.

Yelp
Been coming here for 5+ years as it's walking distance. It has literally been good every single time. Reasonably priced and just fresh and tasty. Love these guys.
google avatar

Nuala M.

Yelp
Yikes. Grease, grease and more grease. I know when you order cheese quesadillas it's to be expected, but not the quantities that were literally oozing out of the ones I got here. Very lackluster service, which matched the equally lackluster food. A friend who was dining with me had a steak burrito with steak that left a lot to be desired. Very fatty and gristly. Eww. With the myriad of choices for Mexican cuisine in the south suburbs, there is no reason why I would ever feel compelled to pay Burrito Express a return visit.

Carrie L.

Yelp
Delicious steak tacos! I've been here so many times since I've moved t Homewood and it's a real treat every time. I bring all my friends there and they love it. It's my go-to taco joint now!

Yelp
Today me and my girlfriend went and im usually a regular here. Today however she bit into her taco and felt a hard substance, she spit it onto her plate and to our shock it was a piece of GLASS. We were outraged and showed the lady at the registered she brought the glass back to the cook apologized and never brought the glass back. Terrible that eating at a restaurant almost cost my girlfriend her life.

Heidi K.

Yelp
Awesome food!! Great service!! A little hole in the wall neighborhood restaurant. Authentic Mexican food

Kyla R.

Yelp
I don't know where to begin. There was hair in my food and when I called. I asked to speak to the manager and she mentioned The manager is only there in mornings that's fine. No apology what so ever about the situation. The lady who answers gave another worker the phone who barely spoke English and said I can bring food back. I asked the lady who took orders what her name was she said " I don't give my name out" that's a little odd. You work in a place of business and you choose to be rude and not apologetic. She mention the managers name is "Verda or Berta" don't know how true that is. This is a sad situation bc honestly the reason I give it 1 star I ate here allllll the time and the food is actually good sometimes. But honestly with everyone being on edge with sanitary purposes because of COVID they lacked in customer service. I will NOT be going back. Especially when I just tried to call again to see what time the manager gets in and I get no answer. So I'm assuming they have caller ID. Truly sad!
google avatar

Matt W.

Yelp
Looks nice walking in then the lady taking the order looked as if she was just released from prison. Ordered a chicken/steak burrito with with cheese, lettuce, sour cream, tomatoes, and beans. Started eating about 25 percent of the burrito and no sour cream. Ask the lady and the cook told me he did put it on. So I open up the burrito and their is one little speckle of sour cream. Did bother proving them wrong. Food was ok nothing special. Services could have been better.

Temeko B.

Yelp
I'm Truly Glad I found a mouth watering Taco Joint (Burrito Express) 179th Dixie HighwayI was able to enjoy I love the tender Steak tacos & Steak Burrito I didn't think I would find another Gr8 tasting taco since I've moved from the City the dining was clean & The Employees were Polite that's an A for me Pass the Word#Polite

Yvette G.

Yelp
Placed an order to go, ready in minutes. Steak and al Pastor quesadillas were so good! Awesome customer service!
google avatar

Kathy W.

Yelp
Worst food ever! Had A chicken burrito and a chicken enchilada dinner. The chicken in both was terrible. The flavors were bland. I do not recommend this place‼

Kerri B.

Yelp
Nothing fancy here, just fresh, home-cooked Mexican fare for a low price. Service is fast and friendly, and the food is always delicious. The tacos and burritos are great, and my vegetarian daughter lives the cheese enchiladas and quesadillas. Kids like the array of Mexican sodas that come in flavors like Mango and Tamarind. Their horchata is also excellent. Decor is bare-bones, but all in all a great place for fresh, cheap and tasty authentic Mexican food.
google avatar

Vin E.

Yelp
Gets the job done! Great Horchata--to soothe the spice. Wish there were more choices around here.

Roshaunta L.

Yelp
This establishment was recommended to me by a colleague. Unfortunately, it wasn't a good experience. The cashier had poor customer service. The food came out quick but once presented there came a disappointment. It reflected a kids meal at adult prices. The meal lacked flavor. I know this business has been there for years so it definitely has a following. I wasn't impressed and I wouldn't recommend my friends and clients.
