Illinois’s Small Farmers Turn to Tech During Pandemic Restaurant Closures | Eater Chicago

"A farm in Monroe, Wisconsin whose owner emphasizes optimism and the critical role of market technology, using farmers-market sales platforms to bring multiple vendors together and reach customers during the pandemic. The farm sees these aggregated online tools as essential for staying relevant, retaining customers, and reinforcing that farm goods are everyday necessities rather than novelties." - Naomi Waxman

Google
I have to give this place at least 4 stars because it's a destination for us once a month or more. We like to get some of the fresh produce and frozen soups. I like the eclectic nature of the goods and the presentation. What I'm not fond of is the seating area being full of conservative white folks, but that probably has more to do with Beloit than the store itself. Employees are knowledgeable and helpful. Plenty of parking even on Saturdays. I had a sandwich last week for the first time at that establishment. It was listed on the menu as a tuna melt. The tuna was obviously a higher quality than is commonly available, and the bread it was quite nice, but there's no way on earth that thing should have been called a tuna melt! A more appropriate name would be a "tuna on a toasted hoagie". The tuna on my tuna melt, was cold, and there was one little bitty piece of melted cheese. It was just fine as far as tuna sandwiches go, but it was absolutely not a tuna melt. The only pass they could get on this is if a person who took my order made a mistake writing it down as tuna without using the word melt. It was a big disappointment, but it was quite a good tuna sandwich and a generous portion. In fact, I brought half of it home with me and ate it hours later. I've previously had their turkey chili, which was very tasty and a little spicy ( i'm not quite a wimp, but my heat tolerance level is only slightly higher.)

Google
Such a great store and café. This was my first time here and I love all of the healthy options and fun organic items. We had lunch and it was delicious! Tuna melt on Sourdough with curry cauliflower soup. And gouda grilled cheese on sourdough with chips. And i had lemon mint iced tea. All very yummy

Google
Small specialty grocery store and bakery/coffee/cafe. Only tried the scones. Still fresh and moist even late on a weekend afternoon. Was not very busy but, we came after the noon brunch rush. Very eclectic variety of products. Not the type of place to stock up on normal groceries. Quiet vibe and floor space was very open. Will come back to try coffee and maybe a grilled cheese. Suspect that it is very much a Beloit College hangout.

Google
Great sandwiches and soup! Wide variety of cheese, wines, beer and liquor, plants, books and fun things to make you laugh. Workers are friendly and food is delicious!

Google
I bought the Bushel & Peck’s Cherry Bomb hot sauce from the Lincoln Park Farmer’s Market, and it is FANTASTIC! It is such a universal hot sauce. I put it on everything. It’s not necessarily very hot, but SO flavorful and makes for a great addition to any food.

Google
Very nice store. I didn't get to spend a lot of time in there as the parking in the area has 2 hour limits and we were going to different places. Had some very interesting selections inside, especially for the hot sauces and jams. A big selection of them. Wish they offered some more drinks though like cherry delite or wiscopop. Maybe I'll try to stop by and eat sometime.

Google
This was a great place to get a very healthy lunch, pick up garden supplies or buy used books. They had some really cute garden-themed agendas and journals. I regret not picking those up. All along the walls were used books that you could purchase on a wide variety of topics. There were also an assortment of plants. Great place to source local foods, dairy or specialty foods. I would love to go back!

Google
First time in and will repeat time and time again. Shane, the GM, is one of the best guys I know. He takes care of customers and employees like his own close knit family. The food is amazing! Local grown, farm to table, vegan options, poultry, Bloody Mary's, coffee and so much more.

Yelp
Who knew Beloit Wi would have the best little market and lunch spot a girl could lay eyes on. Scapes and pickles are top notch but the beers are a snacking staple in our house. Everyone drools over them. We even put them on our wedding charcuterie and con continuously had people asking where did you get those beets! Also picked up some local Wisconsin rye whiskey and the husband loved it. You can also find some of their items at Public Market in Milwaukee so I suggest those near and far check this stuff out!!!

Yelp
I think Bushel & Pack just gave me the best Tuna Salad Sandwich ever!!! Bushel and Peck is half store and half restaurant. They offer a wide array of fresh food and canned goods to purchase as well as a menu of coffee, tea, sandwiches, and salads. I ordered a latte and a tuna salad sandwich and WOW was I blown away. I would love to go back here and have this sandwich again. For large parties visiting it may be hard to find seating as there is not much to offer but the service and food were perfect.

Yelp
I attended a Girls Night Out event here and they have a BEAUTIFUL space. It is so spread out and great for events! They have some delicious jarred veggies and garnishes, Bloody Mary mixes, cheeses and all sorts of local yummy goodies. They also have a used book section, new gifts all over. They have a counter where they offer so many delicious treats! I would not have come here or ever known about them without GNO, so I am extremely happy to have happened upon them. I hope to come back soon!

Yelp
Every week on Saturdays they have a huge stand with a variety of offerings at The Green City Farmers Market in Lincoln Park in Chicago, Illinois! I love all of their pickled items and this week my new favorite finds were their: 1. Kimchi Bloody Mary Mix; and 2. Summer Garden Pickled Vegetables which had a medley of fresh crunchy vegetables such as green and yellow beans, cucumber, cauliflower, hot red cherry bomb peppers and sweet bell peppers! Customer Service is always professional, knowledgeable and outstanding!!!! They have all of their products beautifully displayed so patrons can read the ingredients! Will be going back again in the near future!

Yelp
It's my jam! If you mention jam around me, I'm probably sending you a box from here. It started during COVID lockdown with our need for some spicy jam. I lost track of how many boxes we ordered for ourselves and others off of Etsy. We attended a wedding near Beloit and I knew I had to stop in their store. With a few friends/fellow wedding guests in tow, we headed over. We arrived at the same time as the farmers market, so the street in front and the store were bumping. They sell more than just jam, they sell hot sauces, beer, fancy food, housewares, and have a little cafe. We were like kids in a candy store and all bought something, for me it was more jam, hot sauce and New Glarus. Bottom line, if you're in the area, stop in. If you're not, consider ordering some of their jam online, it's really good. I highly recommend the strawberry habanero and raspberry habanero jams. They're a great balance of sweet and heat.

Yelp
Love Bushel and Pecks! When I lived in the Midwest would come by occasionally with my folks either to eat in or buy their grocery items like the dilly pickles, hot sauces or unique vinegars, or other home items like tea towels or gardening supplies. They ship too and some years ago I sent my brother-in-law a collection of hot sauces which he loved. Very large store and ambiance is great. They have a lot of bookshelves filled with books to look at (and buy if you want) and it's a great spot overall to be at. We were in Beloit yesterday for a family gathering and for myself I had the smoked salmon sandwich (which had a little zing to it that I enjoyed) and opted for a side of broccoli slaw which was really delicious. Staff is always great there. Friendly and helpful.

Yelp
Customer service. My wife got an ice coffee and it tasted like medicine. It was gross. They would not replace it. Won't be back.

Daniella V.

Yelp
Honestly had a decent experiences here, there's an older lady with a lord Farquad haircut in the front with a shitty attitude. But other than that good cup of coffee on a cloudy day. Very cozy.

Yelp
We just ordered our first six pack of hot sauces, after watching your business on Wisconsin foodie. We are so excited and can't wait for them to arrive just in time for Christmas. Definitely excited to try something local.
google avatar

Rich M.

Yelp
Somewhat of an eclectic spot. Books to read, plants for sale as well as food items generally from Wisconsin. Their food is not bad but the price point is high for what you get. They seem to favor making hot sauces, pickled items and other canned goods. Which are all very good btw. Their pickled beets are my favorite. It just seems they would rather be a store than a sandwich place imho.
google avatar

Monica C.

Yelp
Variety of veegetariaychoces but nothing vegan u less you knit the cheese. The person taking my order was not friendly at all. I said I was eating in so I expected my food to be plated and get real silverware but my sandwich came wrapped in butcher paper and salad in a plastic container! Dress g in another plastic container. Ugh! So much waste and not appealing. Sandwich was fair to good.
google avatar

Mary K.

Yelp
Excellent unique sandwiches. Vegan options. A few tables in front to eat outside if you want. If I return to Beloit again at lunchtime, I will definitely visit again.
google avatar

Rashida R.

Yelp
The food and the vibe were fresh. So much locally made jams, books, and wines to buy and try. My only complaint is how far it is from my home in Chicago. I would be there every other weekend if I could.

Yelp
This place is perfect for a liberal traveler like myself trying to find a home away from home in Wisconsin! Books, farmer's market vibe, and exceptional home baked goods. Oh my! The kombucha was sensational. Service was on point. Fun shopping, resting, and eating. I love this place.

Nicolette L.

Yelp
Great food and menu! Wonderful wine and sandwiches. We enjoyed the store as well. Fast service!

Yelp
Great food and gifts! The stuff here is a bit expensive but it's all high quality. They have a lot of things with a local or semi-local origin plus a lot of plants and books. I got some very tasty wisconsin craft beer one time, and another time I got a cute little bag as a gift for my mom and semi-impulsively decided to treat myself to a slice of kale goat cheese quiche. It was one of the best quiches I have ever had.

G. David T.

Yelp
The old-fashioned corner grocery store stocked with premium jams, pickled vegetables, and frozen soups. Quality so exceptional you will think you are back in the 1950s. The staff is friendly and eager to answer any question. Their pickled beets are worth the trip alone.

E. G.

Yelp
Check out the grocery section. Some tasty meals too. Love a city center spot to meet up at after Farmers Market jaunts.

Yelp
This is a neat place in downtown Beloit. We usually stop when we visit the farmer's market on Saturday morning. It is pretty busy but worth it. They have a good variety of drinks and breakfast/lunch items to pick from. They also have a store to buy local canned vegetables and items. There are book shelves to pick something to read while you dine. Neat place!

Lexi P.

Yelp
Cute shop. Fun, relaxing environment. Yummy food and drinks. We love the atmosphere.

Yelp
This is half of the charcuterie plate from B&P's. This was part of a Christmas special (or NYE next week) with soup, salmon spread, waldorf salad and a cookie tray. Says 1-2 people and that is very generous. A feast from a restaurant that I love when it's best to eat at home.

Yelp
While in Lake Geneva we decided to venture a touch farther and check out Bushels and Peck. This place is the bomb dot com for fresh, local, and artisan products. This place is your typical very untypical grocery store. In here you will find local gems, house made jams, and sauces, wide variety of local spirits and beers, and tasty world wines. Tanya (sp? sorry), was excellent in her expertise of products. Her excitement in showing off some of the stores goodies compelled us to buy additional items; those items were such a treat and now looking to buy online fron them. Once again shopping small, shopping local has proven to be the best option for the best products and experience. All of the jams and sauces are providing me and my family very happy eats!!
google avatar

Larry V.

Yelp
I don't recommend any business that refuses local talent. All stores in town should sell products of the people that live in it. Refuse? Close shop. Start something else

Dianna J.

Yelp
Great sandwiches and cookies. Located inside a small market. Very good. Great service. Find n place to eat. And their broccoli side was a winner.

Bryan W.

Yelp
Bushel and Pecks is a unique and quality establishment in a small city, Beloit, which I was pleased to come across while I was in the area and where I ate twice in as many days. It's a real find! Farm to table, they grow their own food. I had a local pork chop with Berkshire pork that rocked!!!! Lots of kale! You get the picture. There was a local trivia place the second night I showed up and the place was packed. There's a very local vibe and a sense of community here. They care about the food they're serving and it shows. There's a used bookstore and some great titles, a section on farming and natural geography and the such. I scored a book about naturalists like Muir and Thoreau and some fellow from Minnesota, even bought a cool shirt (I geeked out a bit, I know, but it's a cool shirt). Local meats in the freezer, great dinners and desserts. Cool people, what're you waiting for....oh yeah, pickled beets!!!

Yelp
After walking down the block in the cold with a 5 and 9 year old, we walked into Bushel & Peck's with our faces flushed from the cold and excited to spend our money on some local fare. We'd discussed the importance of supporting local businesses earlier in the day and how important it is now, especially now - to support them and I was so proud for this to be another example for the day. I was gravely disappointed once we approached the counter, to essentially be kicked out because they were closed at 6 PM (on a Saturday night) and the employee advised she was just on her way to lock the door as we came in. I paused in astonishment, hoping to give the employee an opportunity to course correct - but she held firm that the store was closed. The 5 year old asked what was wrong - so I had to sadly explain that they didn't want our money because the store was actually closed - although as we ended the block, I took out my phone to see it was 6:01 at that point so couldn't have barely been 6:00 at the time. We ended up driving to Illinois, where they gladly took our money! It's unfortunate, because I like the store - but the young lady's adamant denial of service made it clear that her 5 minutes of time was more valuable than my business so I won't be back. In-store dining was closed, so we literally only wanted a couple of sandwiches and some local vendor fare...and to set an example. Hopefully these vendors will be selling at Local Blessings in Rockton or other places so that we can help support them and show our kids how to support their community.

Yelp
This spot is small, but one of my favorites. Highly recommend the weekend brunch menu.

Yelp
Super friendly and helpful staff! Adorable place to shop for yummy things to take home or to eat on site. Love the eclectic mix of stuff: cards, used books, little gift items, home made pickles and other home canned goods, samples of jams, etc. I had the special fish tacos for lunch and when requesting hot sauce, got a 6 pack of home made sauces to sample. Who wouldn't be a fan of that?

Theron S.

Yelp
The absolute best! The atmosphere. The products. The coffee. The staff. They even ship via Etsy if you happen to find yourself living on the other side of the country and in need of a case of cherry bomb hot sauce. B&P is one of the things that make Beloit special.
google avatar

Sara L.

Yelp
We ended up receiving one of the hot sauces from Bushel & Peck as gift from a friend visiting. He was raving how great the hot sauce was and he knew we would love it. Damn right we loved it! We decided to make a visit on our way to New Glarus. The store is cute, very cozy, and stocked with a wide variety of items. It's almost like your neighborhood cafe had a lovechild with the gourmet grocery store with a coffeehouse vibe. They have a pretty decent selection of beer and wine. Of course they had New Glarus! Further down is a refrigerated wall containing cheeses, chilled wine and beer, meats, and other foods. They also have a freezer section where you can get meats, soups, and other frozen foods. Unfortunately, our freezer is packed and not heading home anytime soon. Otherwise, I would've bought a bunch of stuff to bring back. B&P also has a small but good quality deli section. Now lets talk about their life changing hot sauce!!! Seriously, this is a game changer. The folks at B&P allowed us to taste all the hot sauces until our mouths were on fire. Their habanero and ghost pepper hot sauces pair wonderfully with eggs and well just about anything. The fiance's and I favorite is their cherry bomb sauce. It's savory, rich, buttery, and hot with the perfect amount of kick. Think of it like buffalo sauce meets with sriarcha. It's like the best of both worlds. Luckily, they make cherry bomb in a bigger bottle now. We just bought their pineapple habanero sauce....to die for! We can't forget about their jams and picked items! The jams we sampled tasted wonderful. I could finish a jar in no time. Their pickled items are just delicious. It is very easy to end up eating a jar of their pickled green beans. We also had the opportunity to taste their cheese curds too! Warning these curds are gigantic. The batter was very different that what i was used to for curds. They used the same batter they use for corn dogs and fish and chips. I figured it helped grab more the peach mango mustard served with the curds. Not going to lie the mustard threw me off since it was so sweet with mango, but it paired well with the saltiness of the curds. Also near the cafe area they've bunch of used books. I would come back here again for certain. They also ship and deliver too!

Kahmunique W.

Yelp
I went here in December with my mom and grandma. Everything was amazing and can't wait to go back. The service was a amazing and it was a very nice and cozy pot to have lunch. So glad I live right down the street from here.

Yelp
Okay, this place is AMAZING! We're recently on a gluten-free diet and this is the place to go in Beloit . . . for gluten-free or otherwise! They've got plenty of delicious options for everyone! This is not only an eatery, but a market too. Bushel & Peck's has a small, but quality market to shop through. Not only do they have things like jams/jellies, pickled veggies, and other dry goods . . . they have frozen meats to pick from and beer & wine! Now, to the food! Locally grown, organic, and gluten-free options make this the place to go for lunch in downtown Beloit! My wife had the burger and I had the Wisconsin brat (when in WI how can you pass up a brat?)! Each was superb! They were full of flavor and tasted fresh and filling. Neither was overly greasy or gristly -- especially the brat, which can happen at times. The other great thing about Bushel & Peck's are their beverages. As I said above they have alcoholic options, but we went with tea and lemonade. Really really good! We even stopped in a second time before we left town to get a beverage to go. Lots of cold and hot drinks to chose from! This will be an automatic stop every time we're in town!
google avatar

Kris C.

Yelp
I absolutely love this place. I am incredibly thankful for Bushel and Pecks. Without them how could I get a farm to table breakfast with a smoking hot Bloody Mary followed by a side kick of Totally Naked? I crush hard on you Bushels.
google avatar

Marc C.

Yelp
If you're looking for a true country store, in the heart of the city- this would be it. Absolutely the cutest place and friendliest atmosphere.
google avatar

Mark D.

Yelp
The kitchen has gotten very expensive and does not match the quality or portion size received. The only redeeming item on their menu would be the cheese curds, so I would come in here for this only. Their local and organic grocery section does look nice, but it's a bit expensive for locally grown organic products. I would suggest looking elsewhere, unless you're deadset on buying local products.
google avatar

Maxine T.

Yelp
I've finally got a chance to try their food - I got the duck egg Benedict with ham that came with potatoes and my bf got their special omelette which was ham and gruyere which also came with potatoes. Food was good, but some of the potatoes was a little overcooked. Also the food didn't blow me away as much as I expected.

H G.

Yelp
Love this place!! Great selection from plants, foods, deli all the way to candles and bags.

Beth B.

Yelp
Really fresh, yummy good. Great funky, friendly vibe. Neat stuff to shop for while you wait for your food. Great options for vegetarians.
google avatar

Michael G.

Yelp
Love this place. The vibe, the baked goods, the food, the used books. Definitely a get place to get lunch or hang out.
google avatar

Pam S.

Yelp
we live this place, food is so good and best of all so fresh. I have celiac and it's so nice to be know this is a place I can eat and it's safe! They have really good coffee drinks also!

Yelp
We have been to B&P on multiple occasions and have to say the overall experience is A-OK. They do have a small grocery store within the restaurant offering a variety of fresh meats, cheese, beer, and wine. They also have some other items that are organic/ethnic that would otherwise be difficult to find in Beloit. As far as ambiance, they place is very much a lounge atmosphere with lazy chairs and cozy sofas. They have a fireplace that is nice to sit by in the winter. They are a great spot for lunch. They have a variety of organic and grass fed burgers and wraps that are all good. They also have some very hearty vegetarian Chile which is the best I have ever tried. They also have some dessert bars and cookies that they keep on hand. They also have a large variety of coffee's and teas that are fresh brewed. Overall a nice place to grab lunch or coffee. They are also pretty packed on the weekends because they do a mean omelette and other breakfast/brunch items like french toast and pankakes.
google avatar

Foodie Out Loud ..

Yelp
Book lovers and foodies, this is your calling! Foodies will go crazy for their fresh local hot sauces, jams, syrups, cheeses, bakery, and more! Book lovers will appreciate their book store and part library where you can get lost in a great read on site!

Ruth C.

Yelp
Great products and really helpful service. i've only been able to go in a few times but I've always found something new or something I just can't resist
google avatar

Liz M.

Yelp
I've had some hits and misses from here. Any of the soups have been great, their veggie chili in particular is hearty and filling. Their entree salads are good too - the powerhouse has a variety of fresh veggies and your choice of protein. Black bean burger is just okay, came on a dry bun with no toppings. If there was an option for toppings, I wasn't asked. Generally friendly service and a nice selection of local/organic products to stock up on while you are there. Depending on what you order, expect to wait a little bit for takeout orders.
google avatar

Jessica W.

Yelp
Delicious breakfast. The crab cake Benedict was outstanding. I'm picky about my hollandaise sauce and theirs was perfect.
google avatar

Troy J.

Yelp
This restaurant, inside the Mill City Museum, is easily overlooked. However, unlike most museum food venues, you won't be disappointed. The salads and sandwiches are top notch. The food is tasty, delivered quickly, and served in a great venue. Prices are about what you'd expect to pay at a museum -- but its actually worth the price. And, worth coming back. Friendly staff. Quick service. It's a hidden gem for weekday dining.
google avatar

Mommy D.

Yelp
This is a very laid back eclectic spot...has the feel of Bus Boys in Washington DC, but the small town population of 30K. No stage, mic, nor audience involve though. However, for me it's the best salmon eggs Benedict outside of Chitown/Atlanta. The price is cheap, the plate is more than worth the price. They also have $4 mimosa, which beats bottomless for $15 (if your trying to save without getting a DUI LOL). And you'd still save in the end BOTTOM LINE. The place is quant, cool, and organically friendly, order at counter pay, then they bring the food. Unusual for city folk like me, BUT I like it...SIMPLICITY is the best quality. Check it out, if you're ever near Beloit.
google avatar

Jerry A.

Yelp
Nice place to go for a farmer's market feel. If you haven't been here before and are planning to eat, knowing what to do will take a little exploring. Just go to the cash register, order your food, grab your number then grab a table. The biscuits and gravy are as good as any I have ever had. Definitely give it a shot.
google avatar

Thomas G.

Yelp
This is a great place for healthy food choices, sandwiches and soups. Had a delicious avocado, goat cheese and cucumber sandwich with squash curry soup. Great bakery items are also available. Market of local farm to table products. Try the beet ketchup which is interesting and tasty.
