Where to Get Quality Takeout and Delivery in the Bay Area | Eater

"While you’ll find cheesesteaks all over the country, we all know that Philly-style can’t be beat. And Buster’s gets all the details right: beef cooked up on the flattop, griddled onions, drippy cheese. Even in a world temporarily without bars, there’s no denying the appeal of great bar food and a cold soda. Buster’s delivers on all counts." - Vox Creative

Google
The only thing is. Who ever put my order together forgot my can coca cola. Got my refund thru doordash. First time having to leave a review like this. Food was good though, only missing the soda to chug it down.

Google
A bit of a dive with no booze but tasty cheesesteak sandwiches - the portions should fill you up and it’ll cost you less that $20. The people are nice and if it’s a nice day or night, there is outdoor seating. There is also a small - very small - amount of counter seating inside. Great place if you’re on a budget and need some heavy protein after having a few drinks all the nearby bars in North Beach.

Great East Coast feed in San Francisco Lovely staff who make a fast n tasty meal and offer great customer service

Google
This place is a gem! Absolutely delicious. Very quick service and made to order. These guys are extremely kind to all their customers. Be sure to visit!

Google
Cheesesteaks here are pretty good, will definitely return.

Josh F.

Google
Such a delicious cheese steak. I got the phillapeno and it was prepared so quickly. It came out hot and fresh with such divine flavours. Really hit the spot after a big day exploring SF

Google
We got a few cheesesteak sandwiches delivered the other night and WOW! They were fantastic! Just as good as getting one in Philly. Priced right, too. We will definitely be regulars from now on.

Jaspre S.

Google
Delicious cheesesteaks for a reasonable price. The menu is relatively simple, but there are enough options and variety to make everyone happy. Great location with some outdoor seating, excellent service, and it’s open pretty much all the time. Overall excellent experience and some of the best cheesesteaks I’ve ever had.

Yelp
amazing food, Very caring, and take their time on making the food taste great! Very organised place, and clean i would totally recommend coming!

Yelp
It was the best burger I've ever eaten. Friendly staff and everything was great. They treat their customers very well I definitely recommend it

Yelp
I drive by this place almost every time I visit the city and I'm not sure why I haven't been back for 3 years. I always wondered if it was still good. I finally got my chance to check them out again and it didn't disappoint! I ordered the Mushroom Cheesesteak (4 Stars) with White American and sweet cherry peppers on the side. The bread was not your traditional Amoroso roll, but SF is known for their great breads, so the French roll they used was really good, nice crust but not too hard, held up good to the filling. The steak was good quality, however they didn't cook the onions into the chopped meat. The onions are pre-caramelized, then added after the meat is cooked, still good but better when the onions are caramelized during cooking. They used plenty of cheese to hold it all together in the bread. They also have a variety of hot sauces on the counter, I used Louisiana hot sauce on mine. Until next time.. hopefully sooner that 3 years :)

Yelp
Gotta try a Philly cheesesteak spot, especially when it's withstood the test of time! They whipped it up right in front of me as soon as I ordered it. The classic was good but the California one featured some necessary greens & veggies - made it as guilt-free as possible for me!

Yelp
Cozy little spot with just enough seating to enjoy your food. Inside, there are bar stools facing the windows or the cooking station, so you can watch your cheesesteak being made to order. It's very easy to order, and the staff do a great job keeping everything clean and organized. They also hand you a generous stack of napkins with your order, which really came in handy. I ordered the large Philly cheesesteak with the fries and soda combo. The total came to $19.85 with tax. For San Francisco, that price makes sense considering the area and what similar meals cost nearby. Everything tasted good, but the fries really impressed me the most. They came out extra crispy, clearly fried to order, and had a great portion size. Honestly, without the fries, I probably would have still been hungry and considered getting a second cheesesteak. The bread was soft and airy and held the cheesesteak together well. At first glance, it looked like there was a lot of meat, but once I picked it up and gave it a gentle squeeze, it flattened out to about two inches thick. It still hit the spot, but I would have loved a more stacked cheesesteak like you'd get in Philly or even compared to the chain Jersey Mikes. That said, being able to get a decent cheesesteak in SF at all is something I'm grateful for. I'll definitely be coming back because I love meat, cheese, and bread. Next time I want to try it with Whiz on top for that classic finish. Remember, never skip the bev and fries!

Yelp
I wound up here because Molinaris was ridiculously busy the ran out of numbers. As I step back out I noticed this place and the banner stating first cheesesteak shop in CA. Was starving and had to pick up the man shortly. It wasn't too busy and the menu item nice a simple. Settled on mushroom philly. Came out quick and decided to eat half at their outside seating area. It was decent and the bread which makes the whole philly thing a thing not bad. However something was missing in flavor for me. I also grew up on the Cheesesteak Shop cheesesteaks and the my trip to Philly and Angelos Pizzeria blew all West Coast Philly joints I've tried out of the water.
google avatar

Norman W.

Yelp
Late night in the city and I'm starving. Just so happened to roll by this place and saw they were open! Place was clean and well lit and staff were friendly. Short line when I got there but the cashier made short work of it and answered my questions with no issue. Ordered a Phillapeño (beef cheesesteak with peppers onions and jalapeño) and North Beach (chicken cheesesteak with grilled onions and zucchini, never had before but it was a great touch). Bread was fresh and soft as well as the meat/bread ratio was on point. All in all, great sandwich's that I would definitely come to get again.
google avatar

Sabrina N.

Yelp
Loved the service here. It's my 2nd time coming here. I stopped by while visiting San Francisco again and received the best service. I wish I would have gotten the guys name at the cash register but he definitely made our visit 10x better. And of course the cheesesteaks were yummy. The weather wasn't too cold so we sat outside and got to see the view of the city
google avatar

Brittney D.

Yelp
A tiny classic spot with hella chill vibes and a great team from what I saw. A very straight forward menu, we went with the mushroom cheesesteak + jalapeños. Their fries are also good, and they have like 6 different sauces to choose from for dipping lol. Would definitely come here again at anytime!
google avatar

Alissa H.

Yelp
A mid cheesesteak! Got the Phillapeno cheesesteak but they forgot the jalapeños :( lol to me the bread meat ratio is super uneven. There's too much bread and barely any meat filling.
google avatar

Yelp
We were in this part of town for the free Zhu concert this past week, and when we didn't find any food at the night market worth waiting in line for, we decided to go with my all-time favorite for a cheesesteak, Buster's! For less than $15 you can get the most delicious and tastiest cheesesteak I've eaten in the Bay Area, when I compare cheesesteaks, this is my bar. I typically go for the most whole sub cheesesteak bc it has lettuce, tomato, and mayo but the jalapeño cheesesteak is where it's at, just be sure to ask for mayo too. While it tastes good when you bring it home, nothing beats a fresh one, eating it at their counter seats. Watching the chef make it fresh, getting it piping hot, it's my comfort meal. Don't sleep on their burger and garlic fries as well. Burger is massive and a great value. I used to think this spot was good for late night, but I've come to appreciate Busters at all times of the day and in any situation. It's reliable and even on an off day still satisfies the craving for a tasty meal.
google avatar

Michael L.

Yelp
Came here for a philly cheesesteak fix. Ordered the original, no modifications. Man taking the order was nice and hospitable. The sandwich was good, but has the potential to be great next time with the proper modifications. Friends ordered the cheese fries / garlic cheese fries & highly recommend it. Will be back again!
google avatar

Alyssa C.

Yelp
small shop, great sandwiches. service was quick even when a little busy, didn't wait more than 10 minutes for two sandwiches. the bread is crunchy and soft on the inside and hold the juices perfectly. definitely a spot worth checking out if ur in the mood for a cheesesteak. it does get pretty hot in the small shop so we waited outside but with the wait time it was no burden.
google avatar

Mark H.

Yelp
The guy behind the counter has a bit of an Irish brogue, was very friendly and helpful. The place is small, kinda of like hole in the wall and busy but not too noisy. I ordered a beef Philly cheesesteak ( beef, onions and cheese) but I always like some bell peppers added in ( sometime jalapeños - but not tonight). It was cooked promptly and I took it back to the car to share as the sandwich was nice and big with a lot of meat - gotta love it! So I sunk my teeth into in and it tasted fantastic. The beef was cooked perfectly and was tender ( had too many over cooked and tough Philly cheesesteaks in my life). Here it was cooked perfectly. If I had any complaint - would be a touch too greasy - but it tasted soooo good I didn't care. Loved every bite of it - very happy and my stomach was filled to the top - life is good at times like this
google avatar

Chris R.

Yelp
This is my first time trying to buster's cheesesteak was very very good. There was jalapeños in it, which were OK with me. My girlfriend is not a really big fan of spicy. I didn't say it on the DoorDash menu, but it's totally OK. Service here was very very friendly and DoorDash was very quick. There was no ambience because we ate this at home.

Richard H.

Yelp
I've been to all the "great" spots in Philly and I like Buster's better. It's divey, delicious, and open late. I stop here almost every time I'm in North Beach. I like mine spicy, so I get the Phillapeno.
google avatar

Sagan S.

Yelp
Fast af service. Bomb food, tastes fresh. They don't skimp on the meat. The guy working was awesome, came and cleaned the table as we sat down outside and also brought the food out. Would come here again
google avatar

Alicia F.

Yelp
Best damn cheesecake in SF. My boyfriend freaking loves this place so we frequent it often and I ain't mad about it. This is a must stop while in North Beach. The cheesesteaks are super fresh and cooked to order every time. My favorite is the Phillapeno Cheesecake - grilled onions, a little kick of spice with the jalapenos, and the gooey cheese, it is just perfect. If you want more of a "traditional" sandwich type of cheesesteak with mayo, pickles, tomatoes, the California is the way to go. Service is super efficient. They work fast and are super friendly. This is a no frills spot. Super casual with pretty minimal seating. There are a few bar seats so you can watch your food being cooked, window seats to people watch, and a parklet outside. These also travel really well, if you're looking for delivery or take out. Prices are unbeatable, a large runs under $15 and they're open super late! Win, win!
google avatar

Tony F.

Yelp
This is by FAR the best cheesesteak in the city. This easily can easily hold its own to any of the local spots in Philly. Even when you get this place delivered, it's super fresh, wrapped with care and arrived smoking hot. When you eat there in person it's just a nice treat. Small place with mainly outdoor seating but in a great area. It's counter service so very quick. Make sure you order wit' wiz!!!
google avatar

Christian M.

Yelp
Pretty damn good! After not visiting this spot for a couple years, I came back with some friends to show it off. My friends were not disappointed and of course neither was I. They have a small sitting area (bar top only) and you can sit as well as watch your sandwich being made fresh in front of you. I typically get the California cheesesteak and it seems to do hit the spot everytime. This is a great late night spot while drinking or just for a quick fix while roaming the city. *They no longer sell beer
google avatar

Amy L.

Yelp
Buster's is a gem in the North Beach neighborhood. One of the best cheesesteak sandwich places in San Francisco and it's been around so you know they had time to perfect the flavors. The restaurant is small with a few bar seating inside but there is a parket with additional outdoor seatings. Service was fast! It was not even 5 minutes when our orders arrived. I got the North Beach cheese steak and added mushrooms. It was delicious and a bit challenging to eat neatly. The sandwiches were piping hot and had a perfect ratio of bread to filling. Make sure you grab some chili garlic and honey garlic sauce. They are the perfect condiments to the sandwich and fries.

Yelp
It's been awhile since I've been to the City of Brotherly Love. Home of Rocky, the 76ers, Eagles, Phillies, and... wait... Philly cheese steak sandwiches. In my previous job, I was fortunate to visit several East coast cities when exhibiting at trade shows annually for several years. One year, we stayed at the Holiday Inn downtown and looked for a late dinner after flying in after dinner time. We walked into a random fast-food place still open at 10 pm. Boy was I hooked. Fast forward about thirty years and it's been a while since I've been to the right coast. So, having enjoyed versions here, mainly at the old Max's Diner on 3rd and Folsom, l tempered my expectations when finally coming here for a weekday lunch. There was a delivery driver outside waiting for his order when I walked in to study the menu before ordering. I ended up getting the mushroom Philly cheese steak sandwich, large (https://www.yelp.com/user_local_photos?userid=saJuyv784apZzH--psHZ3Q&select=ndTVgfPtcIZ-dq53jqvIqw) and made it a combo for $5.00 which includes fries (https://www.yelp.com/user_local_photos?userid=saJuyv784apZzH--psHZ3Q&select=I4zsJZ580xPeRhJrYH6aKw) and a can of soda. I ordered the sandwich with cheese whiz, the original Philly recipe ingredient. About five minutes later, the cashier brought it to me as I dined-in at the furthest window side stool. I walked back to the counter where a number of sauce bottles sat. There is no shortage of sauce options which include ketchup, BBQ sauce, Louisiana hot, Buffalo, garlic chili sauces, and mustard (https://www.yelp.com/user_local_photos?userid=saJuyv784apZzH--psHZ3Q&select=6E1aXiq-kQeBiUJaqFbqOw). The filling is generous though I probably should have added some veggies to this (https://www.yelp.com/user_local_photos?userid=saJuyv784apZzH--psHZ3Q&select=7yyHcUvfRGK9iMHo6iZAyg) for texture and flavor contrast; it would help me feel less guilty as I feasted. The flavors were pretty good as I squirted BBQ and Louisiana hot sauce into my sandwich. I also squirted a good amount of ketchup for the piping hot crinkle fries. I was only able to finish a little more than half of my sandwich, bringing most of my second half home as part of my dinner. I experimented with their garlic chili sauce but found the Louisiana hot sauce tastier. Definitely not your spot if you seek a light lunch. The fries were crinkle cut and served hot (https://www.yelp.com/user_local_photos?userid=saJuyv784apZzH--psHZ3Q&start=24&select=I4zsJZ580xPeRhJrYH6aKw). I finished about half of this, finishing the rest as part of my dinner that night. Overall, I enjoyed my very filling lunch though I must admit to feeling a bit bloated from the heaviness. I will come back and likely get the half sandwich with different toppings. For those Philly locals, this likely doesn't fall within your expectations of being authentic like Pat's or Geno's.
google avatar

Reynold M.

Yelp
Man, support your local favorite food spot! First and foremost this is the best Philly cheese steak sandwich in SF! Worked in SF for 20 plus years and this is the go to spot for me to get that Philly, Burgers, Dogs and fries fix. The taste is on point all the time, service is super fast and the staff are down to earth, the place is just nostalgic for me just gives you that old school food spot. I suggest going here and just taste everything. Hey don't need to take my word for it. just try it!
google avatar

Benson W.

Yelp
Randomly stopped by on a weekday and the place is really small. Couple seats inside and some outdoor seating. Really solid meal if you want something quick to go. I haven't had my fair share of cheesesteaks other than the Costco frozen ones lol. Was an extra dollar to add all the toppings to make it great and I forgot to add the bell peppers. They also have sauces at the counter you can pour on since it can get repetitive with the simple ingredients. Not an outstanding sandwich but still delicious nonetheless and if you want something new, here ya go.
google avatar

Gabe P.

Yelp
You didn't think you could get bang for your buck in San Francisco? Welp you've never been to busters then. Oh you see they are doing regular size portions for regular prices here right? You must think the food isn't good then. You're wrong again. Now you're 0 for 2. Stop making yourself look silly buster and listen to me. This is just good ole fashion Philly, hamburgers and fries. No frills. You can get a hot dog too. Why not? It's not going to be the best you ever have. But it's Just good simple junk food in a super convenient location in North Beach. You can find real value here. Don't question me Buster. I'm telling you the truth. (4.5 Stars)
google avatar

Jason S.

Yelp
Cool late night by spot in the city food is hit and miss but when it hits it's amazing but most of the time it's a miss that's why the 3 star rating!!! But when it hits it's a 5star but hardly lol
google avatar

Baba O.

Yelp
You probably stumbled onto this review trying to figure out the question "if i should stop by here while I'm out here in North Beach?". The answer is, absolutely. Especially if you had a good amount to drink just now. There is a lot of places to eat from while in North Beach, but this could be your new go-to if you go with the Phillapeño cheesesteak w/ some garlic cheese fries. That will get you right for the night. Absolute gem of a spot. They're open late night too.
google avatar

Toomi And Lance C.

Yelp
Buster's has got to be the BEST sandwich restaurant in California! Their Cheese Steak sandwiches are phenomenal - generous portions and the service always exceeds our expectations! I think we have tried almost the entire menu - and regardless of which sandwich you get - you won't be disappointed & guaranteed you will be back for more! I Buster's!
google avatar

Joe N.

Yelp
Best Philly Cheesesteaks in SF. After a night of celebrating friendship in Chinatown, walk over to Busters. The service, food, atmosphere is exquisite. This is establishment is one of many that make San Francisco truly, the best city in the world.
google avatar

Moukthika O.

Yelp
Pretty solid, I usually get this place for takeout and the cheesesteak is decent for a late night meal. But I think I like the cheesesteak shop a little bit more

Sfv5.0 G.

Yelp
Wow I've had cheese steaks but this one hear Is amazing Great Philly will be coming back and telling everyone about this spot
google avatar

Lesly M.

Yelp
You can see how cheesy they come out! Love the many choices of sauces. Kind workers and quick. Small place but convenient!

Scott F.

Yelp
This is the best cheesesteak in the Bay Area. I've never had better Today I had the mushroom, onion provolone cheese and steak. It was juicy, flavorful, tender and the roll held it all together. I had the small which is the size of other places large.
google avatar

Melissa N.

Yelp
it was good. but.. was lacking flavour overall which brought it down a lot for me, the roll was very soft, very nice, the cheese was melty, very good, the onions caramelized but the lack of salt really killed the flavour profiling
google avatar

Mahmoud A.

Yelp
Philly cheesesteak Fire and chef Peppers and cherries Swiss and provolone The best
google avatar

Tray E.

Yelp
Good cheeesteaks Decent size Price not bad Many sauces available Buffalo, Ranch, Bque, Tabasco and Crystal Good taste in the meat
google avatar

Jason Y.

Yelp
Buster's still has one of the best cheesesteaks in the city. It never disappoints, and the price is still great despite all the inflation going on. Their bread or roll was toasted and fresh, unlike other places where they're cold and hard, which makes the whole experience not enjoyable when you have to tear your way just to take a bite. The beef was tender, juicy, and flavorful. The portion was a lot, even if you get a small. The garlic fries were some of the best I've had. A lot of garlic, and just the right amount of oil and crispiness. Overall, it's the spot for locals and tourists. Not many seats are available inside, maybe at most ten, but you can walk over to Washington Square and have a mini picnic.
google avatar

Ginger J.

Yelp
I loooove Buster's! I ordered the California cheesesteak!! It was delicious, well cooked with fresh veggies. Whichever sandwich you order, you'll definitely enjoy it!!! Also, they have sauces that you can take home. My favorite is the honey garlic. Yummmm! You will have a very happy tummy with their food. You've got to try this place.

Tim M.

Yelp
Service was good and so was the food. I could have had back 2 back sandwiches. Well cooked, soft bread and so tasty. The next day I was longing for more.
google avatar

Kip D.

Yelp
Excellent cheesesteaks, the best in North Beach. So good the band Cake featured them in their music video "I Will Survive" https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f9rCUQjmkxU Unfortunately they do not have real Cheez Whiz as an option, only nacho cheese. These guys have been killing it for decades, I will never stop eating here.
google avatar

Yelp
We just ordered a late night snack from here through Grubhub on the Yelp app. Reading the Yelp reviews had me craving all the food I saw on Yelp. The Philly's, burgers, the cheese fries... chili cheese fries. It all looked great! We decided to order the Mushroom Philly with cheese wiz and the Bacon burger. In the pictures, they looked so cheesy! You have the option of choosing beef or chicken for the Philly. Of course, we went with beef. For the burger, I got to choose a burger temp. I went with meduim-well. After placing my order, I forgot to request a side of mayo, so I tried calling Buster's Cheesesteak and they did not pick up their phone... maybe because it was after 1 in the morning... arrival time after placing our order at around 12:40 am was going to be between 1:10‐1:30am. I did get a little concerned when the time changed to a delivery time of 1:30-1:50 am... however, my order was delivered here at 1:25 am. I was happy with that. The two that delivered it were so nice. I appreciate them so much. When we opened up the food, there was no cheese on the Bacon burger. In the picture, there was cheese but it is not listed on the bacon burger description. That was my fault. It was still very delicious. Cooked perfectly. You could taste the freshness of the burger patty. When we opened up the Mushroom Philly, there was no cheese in sight. Nothing like what it shows on the pictures on Yelp. I am a very visual person and the cheese hardly touched the sandwich. It tasted pretty good with the mushrooms & onions. The meat was juicy. I'll bet it would've been better with the cheese it should've had on it. So overall delicious, but it was missing one of the most important parts... THE CHEESE!!!!
google avatar

Carlson T.

Yelp
Out and about exploring the city and came across this place. Got the regular cheese steak and was reading thru some of reviews to get it with both cheese wiz and American cheese - not half bad. Add the hot honey from the counter on your cheese steak - it's a winner in my book. It's a small joint but you can sit at the window and people watch as they walk along. There was only 2 folks working so be patient when ordering. I was noticing how they made their garlic fries - they fry to order and then add several scoops of garlic to mix it with. Like heavy scoops. Your breath is going to quite lovely afterwards. This place is more like a 3.5 stars but I'll round up.
google avatar

Mallory W.

Yelp
Came here for dinner seen bayareaafoods post about this spot on IG and it looked so good. Glad I came cause it was a hit for me!! Meat was seasoned so well, bun soft. I got the phlily with then jalapeño peppers added mayo and cheese whiz and it was a hit to me!!! So much meat and cheese whew!!! I def will be back! Service could of been better though the cook was way more friendly then home girl taking out order but food was great that it didn't matter writing this review. IT WAS THAT GOOD!
google avatar

Lizey N.

Yelp
4.5 stars cause this is the best cheesesteak hole in the wall in the city. Like it's literally a tiny spot on the corner of the street and you might miss it if you're not paying attention. The sandwiches are made to order right in front of you - best tasting m, flavorful meat, juicy, cheesy sandwiches. You can customize it with what kind of cheese and toppings you'd like. I only knock it down .5 stars because of the limited and tiny seating area but love to come here late at night.
google avatar

Rachel K.

Yelp
Shout out to my coworker Paolo for introducing me to Buster's! I love a good sandwich and it's hard to find a Cheesesteak that hits all the marks. This one was so flavorful, served hot and fresh and the bread was perfect with the combination of toppings. They were so friendly when we stopped in, even though it was busy and the food came out so fast. They're open late, like 3am late, which means you can get these sandwiches for lunch, dinner, second dinner, or as a preemptive hangover cure. We ate ours right after getting it, but it was so good I wish I had gotten another for the next day, unfortunately my hotel didn't have a refrigerator so no leftovers were happening... this time. I already told my husband we need to go back, he's a huge cheesesteak fan and this spot will definitely become a staple of our SF visits.
google avatar

Kurt R.

Yelp
I've been to Buster's several times. Their food is made fresh, fast, is tasty, and is reasonably priced given expenses. The fries are really good, as are the cheesesteaks. It's not fancy, but it's a solid West Coast version of a cheesesteak joint.
google avatar

Brandee T.

Yelp
Omg amazing cheesesteak! Mushroom cheesesteak with cheese wiz!! Plus cheese garlic fries!

Angela M.

Yelp
Buster's has become our go-to late night staple after a night out at the bars. The service is always quick and friendly! The cheesesteaks are filling, flavorful, and the meat is always juicy. I love their garlic fries, you can actually taste the garlic!
google avatar

Yelp
I could go to North Beach and Chinatown every weekend for a year and find something interesting to eat. It's like being a kid in a candy store. But in my case, it is an overweight middle-aged guy who likes to stuff his face. Which brings me to Buster's Cheesesteak. Without stating the obvious, Buster's makes Cheesesteaks and it comes down to what you want in it. You want it with mushrooms, mushroom Philly. You want jalapeños, get the Phillapeño Cheesesteak. On and on and on. I ended up getting the: Whole Sub California: grilled onions, tomato, lettuce, pickles, Mayo, etc. How was it? Good. I had to end up taking some of the lettuce out because it was too much but all the combination of flavors and the good quality meat and cheese made for a delicious Philly Cheesesteak. While there are a ton of options for food in North Beach, I think Buster's holds its own in the densely populated culinary delights located all around them.
