"A literal hole-in-the-wall, Busu operates out of a single window with a few stools outside, mainly for takeout, a few times a week. The menu features a small selection of comfort dishes that change regularly, with chef and owner Kenneth Booth posting updates on Instagram. Generally, visitors can find a hearty soup, rice bowl topped with seasonal goodies, and Japanese-inspired specialties like yakisoba, chicken karaage, and udon. Keep an eye out for mushrooms foraged by Booth himself or other local foragers, and a range of fermented and pickled goods." - Alex Frane, Jennifer Burns Bright

Google
Cute little store with Japanese setting run by a good owner. Fresh locally sourced ingredients you can tell at first bites. Food is always delicious, i had pickled plate, yakisoba and black cod miso soup, look forward to trying other things on the menu.

Google
OMGGGGGGG!!!! Go for lunch immediately! The menu is donation based - with suggested donations listed - and worth double! My partner and I made it a point to go for lunch on a trip last weekend to Astoria and it was the best meal we had the whole trip!!!!!!!!! We shared the yakisoba, mushroom congee, some picked mushrooms with kimchi and a little tea. We sat at the window and talked with Chef Kenzo about food, philosophy, and living in all the places before coming home to the PNW. Do yourself a huge favor and make eating there a top priority. Thank you Kenzo!

Google
Amazing food prepared beautifully! So glad we stopped here for lunch. Absolutely incredible vibes and taste. Wish I lived closer so I could stop by everyday!

Google
We ate here for the first time. It definitely won’t be the last. Ken is so friendly. Our Miso was amazing with pork belly and corn, noodles… wow!

Google
I’m not saying this food is changing my life, but it might be. I’ve had the pleasure of having several meals here now, and not once have I been even remotely dissatisfied. The oko spud was a combo I didn’t know I needed but now probably can’t live without. The curried egg salad sandwich was immaculate. The special cheeseburger I inhaled with the feral enthusiasm of a woodland child raised by wolves & zero table manners. Beyond the kitchen wizardry, Kenzo is wildly generous & clearly pours so much love into every bite; The kind of person who feeds your stomach AND your soul. If you’re lucky enough to grab a meal here, just know you’re in for something magical (& possibly life-altering).

Google
Food smelt great, looked great, but was so salty that my brother could only eat two fork fulls of charred/burnt Yakisoba. Ended up having to throw it away and keep in mind both dishes were no cheaper than $17 forced myself to eat my bowl. Chef needs to taste what he cooks before serving it. This coming from someone who loves salty food. Besides the flavor you can tell the ingredients are of great quality, just poorly executed.

Google
Very good. This is the definition of a hole in the wall in the best way!! Highly recommend! Fresh ingredients, few item menu so everything has been perfected or at least pretty damn close to it. The owner is the only one that cooks so it’s the same every time! Absolutely amazing. If your in Astoria you need to try this place!

Google
We walked by and would’ve kept walking but someone sitting at the counter said it’s a great spot so we decided to try it. Did not disappoint! Got the pickle plate and spuds plate. Definitely not what we expected but phenomenal.

Yen D.

Yelp
There's a counter top for 4 people with two other benches to sit at. No take out boxes, the only ambiance is what you see looking into the kitchen and only outdoor seating. Red lobster mushroom curry soup was light and refreshing. Busu corn tasted like it was topped with Korean corn cheese and some spicy sauce..so butter, cheese and mayo and maybe some sugar with sesame seeds for texture. Shoyu quail eggs were soft and flavorful. Can be eaten just fine without rice. Also got to try the chilled noodles with chili oil, sesame oil, flaked salt, lemon cucumber slices, grilled Japanese eggplant with foraged mushrooms. I can see why they sell out. This place is Japanese fusion and donation based so the prices are just suggestions. No excuse to complain about the prices since the whole menu is donation based.

Yelp
Were staying in the area for the night and saw this place online had five star reviews everywhere. It was nearby to our hotel, so we walked over to check it out. It was a chilly night and a bit rainy, so when we saw it was a takeout only window, we were like oh no Then we saw the menu.. only 4 items, all of which looked super cozy. We both got the pork noodle soup, then ducked inside next door at the coffee shop to stay warm while we waited. Bought some sake + ordered another dish there for our toddler, then I walked back over to the window and our food was already ready- so fast! I started eating at the bar while we waited for our toddler's food to be ready. He saw me slurping noodles though and demanded that I share, so I used my to-go lid to share some- toddler approved. The soup itself was soooo good.. rich complex broth, pork belly, thick noodles.. there was also some seemingly random sausage in it that I almost didn't eat, but it was seriously one of the best parts.. very unexpected. The guy working (maybe owner?) was also a good vibe. Definitely took the edge off the cold night. Would come here often if I lived in the area.. Not to be missed, if you are passing by!

Yelp
I think place is decent enough but not OVERWHELMINGLY amazing. I had okonomiyaki and it was packed with lots of ingredients. We were also gifted some pickles and those were pretty decent. I think it's hard to expect authenticity here, so I'll take this. Takeout only. Check Instagram for the menu since the menu changes a lot.

DW B.

Yelp
Delicious food, great owner, I loved how he talked to us like regular people, gave a great feel to the place. The tofu was absolutely define. Only sad thing is that hours change regularly so be prepared for that.

Wina G.

Yelp
Took a little trip down the coast and stopped here to get some food. It was highly recommended. We got the pickled veggies- he does it himself, the yakisoba with pork belly (you had a choice of that or shrimp), veggie miso soup and the fried spam donburi. The portions are pretty good - 2 people can easily share an entree. Loved the flavors. He does a different menu for the day. Literally a window that you walk up and order. Give him time to make your order fresh- it's a one man show. So glad we had the food here- we are fans!

Wing L.

Yelp
Wow a hidden gem for sure! Small little place with a window to order (takeout only). Menu is limited, but the portions are HUGE!! We were craving some Japanese food in the area and was so pleasantly surprised that we found this place. We ordered takeout, walked around for 15-20 mins, returned to pick up our food, and brought it back to feast on while watching TV. Definitely recommend! If you're unsure what you want to eat/try, staff and Chef are SO friendly and they'll give you honest opinions about what you may like. Dishes are made-to-order and you can customize it if you don't like a particular topping/ingredient. Love it!

Lynni S.

Yelp
I was kinda excited to try something other than your fish and chips takeout since we had our dog with us. The kimchi was good. My okonomyaki was really burnt on the bottom side and it did impact the flavor. The general flavor was good, and it wasn't overcooked inside. The amount of katsu sauce was a bit more than I'd like. I wonder if perhaps he would do better with a helper to take the orders so he could concentrate more on the food. My boyfriend ordered the yakisoba. It had good flavor also but had weird crispy spots that were so burnt they were crunchy like top ramen. He was really generous with the Bonito flakes and they were good quality.

Ha T.

Yelp
Busu is literally a hole-in-the-wall, with one very ornate doorknob. The food is fantastic, with layers upon layers of different flavors. It's greasy, salty, and addictive - everything you'd expect in good street food. My favorite is the yakisoba, which has a nice smoky flavor without the burnt taste. I like okonomiyaki to be just a tad fluffier, but this one is still enjoyable. The portion is not huge, but very filling. Two normal people could easily share one to-go box.

Chris S.

Yelp
Don't bother going by here to try and pick up take out dinner as the format has changed. I am sad to find out that we will no longer be able to eat here when we visit Astoria. We loved the food when we had it in the past but now there is no ordering at the window, only private dinners or occasional pop-ups. Such a bummer. I do wish the chef well with the new model.

Justin C.

Yelp
Busu is on top of the game. Really enjoyed the teriyaki thighs plate with dark fresh guilan and even got some sipping ramen when the owner heard I had a long road trip ahead of me. Made to order or call ahead; worth the wait - the food is crazy good!

Ian K.

Yelp
This hit the spot! Yakisoba and Okonomiyaki are a match made in heaven and Busu knows how to deliver! Takeout only seems perfect for this covid time, but once this all passes don't let it sway you. Order to go to bring back home or enjoy outside as you watch the sun set. You won't regret it. Everything is made to order and took around 15-20 minutes. Perfect amount of time to walk around before you get your grub on. Lots of street parking on all sides of the street. Oh and did I mention the portions are gigantic! You will not be left hungry ;)

Amy G.

Yelp
This is a cute little walk up window with a strong game. I have always believed when someone has a small menu it leads to greatness. Everything is done to perfection each time. Busu was no exception. There's also something for everyone. I'm a vegetarian and was greeted with flavorful, sauted, tofu, The texture was on point. The soba noodles were dripping with flavor and the crisp fresh veggies were mouth watering. It's a dish to share because the serving is out of the park. I ended up having noodles for 3 meals and it was a divine joy every time.

Kal L.

Yelp
really good food, impossible to get said food. Used to be a regular little food stall, open half the week for anyone to come by. Now, you either need to pay way too much for a "private dinner" or be one of the first few people in line for a once in a month pop-up.

Ryan S.

Yelp
The okonomiyaki and seaweed salad were amazing! As was our conversation with the chef-owner. Ask about his mushroom foraging!

Nick W.

Yelp
Got yakisoba noodles Large portion size. Some of the elements of the dish were very tasty (pickled items). Tofu was flavorful and generous! Overall it was too greasy. Noodles were practically pan-fried. Not enough fresh items to offset and balance the dish out. Very...brown. Service was kind!

Kailee N.

Yelp
The cliff notes: grab some delicious Japanese food to go and enjoy it by the pier. 10/10 for authentic, thoughtful Japanese food with high quality ingredients. There are rotating dishes each day and vegan/ vegetarian options with labeling of so ( I appreciate this so much) ; make sure to stop by before they sell out! I was thoroughly impressed with my tofu yakisoba that came topped with microgreens and chili threads!! I appreciate this the added touch that not only make it aesthetically pleasing but add flavor and nutritional value too! This came jam packed with flavor, and an abundance of food. The noodles had that perfect wok char that I'm always looking for in an Asian noodle dish!! My only suggestion would be to garnish with a lime for a bit of acid to bring out the salty flavors! I really enjoyed my experience with Busu and I hope I get another chance to stop by and try some other dishes.

Gary K.

Yelp
Elegant and amazing food. We had albacore poke bowl, seafood cakes, and smoked tofu, all amazing. Also creamy shrimp mousseline and lobster soup - to absolutely die for. Not a sit down place but who cares!

Chandra M.

Yelp
If you are able to eat here I highly recommend it. Everything I have tried has been amazing! The mushroom congee on a rainy day really hits the spot. Thank you for constantly bring new and amazing things to your menu.

Gabriella S.

Yelp
Customer service was great and the food was delicious! That bisque was great on a cloudy afternoon, plus the veggies with the pork made for a juicy meal

R I.

Yelp
Freakin amazing. We came in around 6p in rainy Sunday and nabbed the last yakidon, miso soup, and pickles. There's an awesome arcade and beer hall on the other corner that was recommended while we waited for our food which was super fun to pass the brief time. The food has so much flavor and was a nice change from the routine brew pub, fish and chips, and other upscale dining options that we were tired of from our CA to pacific NW road trip thus far. My only regret that's that we're only in Astoria one night and won't be able to come back to try the other offerings.

Susanna N.

Yelp
I happen to be passing through town looking for dinner and almost walked right by this little shop but I'm glad I didn't. Just what I was looking for - something totally unique and healthy! Plus it's walk up to order and eat outside so very Covid friendly. Lovely owner and overall great experience.

Joe B.

Yelp
We passed through Astoria while on vacation a couple weeks ago, and were lucky that my wife found Busu. We really enjoyed our food. Hot tip: get there when they open, since they'll likely run out of items and/or you'll have to wait in line. It is take-out only. We highly recommend it.

Jersey B.

Yelp
Best place in Astoria hands down. Uses local fresh ingredients and has a new menu every week.

Ted S.

Yelp
Food was over cooked. Much of it was burned. Only full items on the menu were yakisoba and fried rice. We got both and both were overdone. Only one person was in line ahead of us so the cook shouldn't have felt rushed... must have been something else. Anyway it probably would've tasted fine if it weren't cooked so much.

Griz S.

Yelp
I freaking love busu! I found about this spot after seeing it in the Daily Astorian and was super stoked to have legit japanese food in Astoria. I've been here multiple times and the food/vibes are always amazing. The owner Kenzo is super welcoming and doesn't bullshit you with generic food. They serve a variety of japanese/asian fusion dishes and have different menus for dinner and lunch. Chef Kenzo also gets his ingredients from local business and has only the freshest ingredients. The menu varies everyday which I enjoy because it's a good surprise so check their instagram for the daily lunch and dinner menu! There is also a couple stools in case you want to dine in. Some of my favorites from Busu are the chicken kaarage, yakisoba, poke and shrimp tempura. The chicken kaarage is amazing! It's basically japanese fried chicken and has the perfect crispiness. The yakisoba is also great; crisp noodles with a flavorful sauce and melt in your mouth pork belly. I'm always looking forward to what's on the menu because the food always delivers. I'm definitely a loyal customer.

Michelle G.

Yelp
Ordered the chilled noodles and pickled box - both excellent. Never would have thought of pickled strawberries- it was wild! Lots of flavor same with the mushrooms. Definitely recommend! Chilled noodles hit the spot. Large portion sizes. We found the most current menu on Instagram/Facebook.

S L.

Yelp
Literally a hole in the wall store. But get ready for a surprise! I was looking to get a fix for yakisoba at a Japanese restaurant but happen to come upon this store. Ordered the yakisoba with pork belly. Took about 10 min before I picked up my food and proceeded to open the box and was surprised at the amount of food. The smell was amazing with a slight char to the noodles. Started digging in an could not stop eating it. Had the typical yakisoba sauce taste but it came with a lot of other topping, and the pork belly was soft and tender. I finished the whole box and was satisfied to the Max. definitely would purchase it again. Gotta to try it if you are in Astoria.

Thomas J.

Yelp
Spam Fried Rice w/ Brussel Sprouts was fantastic! Great little food window putting out high-quality meals.

Scott J.

Yelp
Literally the best Ramen I've ever had. Vegetables are fresh, pork belly amazing and broth absolutely on point. Worth every penny

Lynda S.

Yelp
I had the okonomiyaki and it was phenomenal. I could only eat half of it and couldn't wait until I was hungry again so I could finish it. It was and amazing combination of texture and flavor and easy on the eye as well. I will be back!!!

Gabriela Z.

Yelp
Yummy noodles. The guy running the place was very nice and made sure our meals were perfect. Would totally come back when I'm back in town

Maggie M.

Yelp
Super good! I love the daily specials, usually get the ramen with pork. Also love the pickle plates. Sometimes it takes a bit but it's made so well!

Jacob H.

Yelp
What a gem for foodies in Astoria... very lucky. Will be back for sure. Get some before they sell out! Don't miss out on the pickle mix, fantastic flavor kimchi.

Ryan S.

Yelp
Excellent Shrimp Miso today, with generous seaweed. So much flavor! Kids had the Tofu Miso. Good all around! Thank you!

Leah W.

Yelp
My husband brought me home a brussels sprout salad from BUSU prepared on 1/28/2022. That salad was absolutely incredible! I have never had a salad with so much flavor - it really hit all the important elements of amazing taste and quality. The salad had brussels, finely chopped onion, mandarin oranges, dried cranberries, sunflower seeds, another seed that I wasn't familiar with, wasabi almonds and it was tossed in very tasty dressing that I wish came in a bottle because if it did, I'd buy it just to try and re-create this salad. I look forward to coming back to BUSU to try other items! Bravo.

Cat T.

Yelp
Hands down my FAVORITE food in Astoria, possibly ever. The owner is so kind and a great chef. His staples of Okonomiyaki, Yakisoba, and Pickle Plate are always a hit and consistently delicious. His specials are also awesome to try. He uses local ingredients and supports many local businesses from what I can tell. Highly highly recommend!!

Dan M.

Yelp
As I approached Busu, familiar & distinct Japanese aromas cast an immediate spell on me. Images flashed in my mind of Japanese temples, Gardens and Geishas. The authentic venue made my mouth water AND my head spin. But...but wait, how was this possible? Was I dreaming? Had I been mysteriously teleported back to Japan after so many years away from that magical land? So, I rolled with it and ordered a succulent bowl of Dungeness Crab Miso Soup with toasted sesame, tofu, green onion and seaweed. Oh, the humanity! It was garnished with sun-dried angel-hair chili pepper "threads" that splashed a bright red accent and kicked in just the right amount of mild heat. More images flashed before me....Mt Fujiyama, cherry blossoms and tea ceremonies. It was only natural then to order the Garlic & Chanterelle Fried Rice. I could choose from either pork belly or jackfruit, but preferred neither and the kind proprietor, Kenny-san, happily offered tofu as a third choice as he gently bowed before me. Simply amazing, it was prepared with Thai basil, garlic, soy sauce, green onion and those incredible pepper threads again. Completely satisfied, I tried to make sense of this twilight zone experience and then realized I actually WASN'T 4500 miles away in a back-alley Japanese yokocho-cafe. It looked like it, tasted like it, and felt like it, but you don't have to travel halfway around mother Earth to experience it. Kenny-san and Busu are the real thing, yep, right downtown.

Bailey G.

Yelp
HIGHLY RECOMMEND!! Wow that was a fireworks-in-my-mouth meal. Had the Yakisoba Noodles with Tofu. The tofu was marinated to perfection. The carrots were flavorful and crunchy. The ginger was cooked and was like crunchy little bits that popped. The noodles had so much flavor could be dish of its own but loved the veggies. The green onions on top were refreshing. Portions were huge. Probably 3 meals (and I'm not a small guy)

John H.

Yelp
This was an absolute treat!! Busu is officially a Oregon staple for me and I will not be going to Astoria with out stopping by this glorious window. We had the karagee morels, yakisoba, and the pickle plate. All to die for. I had high expectations from who recommended it to me and it was even better.

Shayne R.

Yelp
My partner and I always make sure to eat here when passing through on our road trips. I'll wait the entire coast just to eat at Busu, definitely worth the stop! The owner is always so friendly, superb customer service. The food is so delicious, always fresh and seasonal ingredients. The menu is limited, but never limited in flavor or size! I appreciate the menu, it means a lot of care and love goes into their dishes. Also appreciate they always have vegan and vegetarian options as well. Thanks for the delicious food every time!! Yum

Christine G.

Yelp
We had three dishes and all three were amazing! The okonomiyaki was our favorite!! Menu changes frequently. No bad choices to be had! There is a beautiful park one block up to sit and enjoy.

Staci S.

Yelp
Always fantastic!!! Menu varies daily, so make sure to checkout their Facebook page. Not only is the food fresh, delicious, and locally sourced, but they are friendly too. This is a must-stop-for gem!

Jesse H.

Yelp
This is the second meal I have eaten here and the Okonomiyaki was not good today. The owner assured me the shrimp was local and fresh. It was dried shrimp probably reconstituted from dried and bagged. Yuck. Also, there was so much brown salty sauce drowning the pancake that you couldn't anything else. Really disappointing.

Brett L.

Yelp
Legit Japanese food. Pickles. Seaweed salad. Porkchop marinated in Miso. Yakisoba noodles. Okonomiyaki. It was all amazing!

Kristina A.

Yelp
We brought our friend in from Japan, and he said it tasted just like home! The kids loved the yakisoba noodles!

Monica W.

Yelp
Passing through Astoria today, we asked the bud tender for a lunch recommendation. We were approaching hanger when we walked up to the window and were greeted by the super friendly chef/owner. We saw lots of interesting options on the menu and ordered the tuna salad sandwich which came with locally sourced albacore and pickled veggies, yakisoba noodles with tofu, and a side of vegetables fresh from the farmers market. It was all beautifully presented and delicious. I'd definitely recommend this place. If you're looking for fresh, seasonal, and authentic I would totally give Busu a whirl.

Earl E.

Yelp
Everything I've tried has been great. Although it's not always available, the ramen is life-changing!

Leslie A.

Yelp
Husband and I stopped by Astoria on a rainy Sunday, and worked up an appetite. Didn't want heavy bar food. It's COVID, so we didn't want to sit inside a restaurant. Stumbled upon this place and--just wow--it was so satisfying. One of the best meals we've had out in some time. Super fresh. Homemade. We had a special with local chanterelles that was...*chef's kiss!* Chef gave us awesome service, too! We will be back.

Anna C.

Yelp
The mushroom noodle soup really hit the spot on a brisk day! The owner of the stand was very friendly and answered our questions thoughtfully. We had two soups and the asparagus appetizer/side dish. Everything was great. I was pleasantly surprised to see all vegetarian options (with some vegan too). The food came out quickly and we enjoyed it sitting on benches on the dock a short walk away. The prices are higher than I expected, but it beats paying the same amount for a more mediocre place with slower service.
