The Best Restaurants in Covington, Louisiana | Eater New Orleans

"The long wait is over. After being closed for 15 months due to storm damage, Butter Krisp Diner reopened in July. They sold more than 13,000 donuts on the first day back. A landmark diner since 1976, the family-owned spot dishes breakfast all day, sandwiches, wraps, and donuts, lots of donuts." - Beth D’Addono

My group had a great time here. I was feeling brave and decided to order the donut grilled cheese, and it was actually pretty good. No complaints! Our server was great as well. Felt like a classic diner experience and we loved it.

Google
Butter Krisp Rules!! These are the absolute best donuts on this side of the pond!! Whenever family comes rolling through town, this is our go-to when it comes to donuts!! The buttermilk donuts rule!! So do the blueberry one and that monstrous apple fritters!!

Caleb J.

Google
Spent many Sunday mornings grabbing some donuts on the way to church. The hot glazed are just as good I remember them 30 years ago. Back then, we would see a guy who used to work here he looked like Harry Connick Jr.

We were traveling and stopped by accident. We were actually trying to get some ice latte from McDonald's but they told us that they had a power outage so we stopped here and boy am I glad that McDonald's told us that !!!! Omg I wish we had one of them here in Jacksonville florida the doughnut 🍩 was sooo good and soooo big we got some honey buns doughnut yummy 😋 delicious ...it was so big that we actually shared one so we had more from the road....lol definitely recommend this place!!!

Google
I waited for almost 20 minutes for this order. I was told to pull up and someone would bring it out to me. They never did. I got out my car. Waited another five minutes. The lady with my order walks out the door when I’m standing there waiting for it 25 minutes and you would think I could get ketchup for these fries. They didn’t even put one packet of ketchup, I will never in my life come here again this place is trash.

Google
I love Diners, and this one is one of those brick and mortar places that if you're from the area you know about. Whether it's a dine-in or a drive-through, you'll be satisfied 😌

Google
Visiting from Dallas, I always seek out these little diners when I travel and this one was so close to being great. The food was amazing--burgers, fries and donuts were all the best I've had in a while. I think our waitress was struggling. It took 30 minutes for our food to arrive, and then it was the wrong order. Like not even close to what we ordered. Then another (younger) waitress who seemed like maybe she was a manager came out and apologized to our table and the table next to us (who came in 15 minutes after us) whose order was also delayed. She offered us free donuts and we said we'd love to pick some up on our way out as dessert and she agreed. After this exchange we overheard from all the arguing behind the counter that our order had never been entered. So now we're at 30 minutes waiting and the kitchen is just getting word about us. The table next to us, again seated after us and also comped free donuts because their food was delayed, was served before we were. We finally received our food after an hour. It was amazing. Possibly even worth the delay. On our way out we chose our donuts, as discussed while we were waiting for our meal. It was the same waitress/manager that offered us free donuts for the delay, but she charged us for them. I didn't say anything, because it feels awkward and cheap to be like "um, no, remember you said we could have them for free?" And it's just a couple of bucks. But the whole thing made me feel invisible and bothered me enough to make me want to write this review. I would definitely go back because the food is amazing and the odds of having a similarly negative service experience again seem remote. But right now I feel miserable.

Google
Some of the best donuts I've had the pleasure of eating. The glazed donuts were fresh and hot. So hot, in fact, that the glaze was melting off the donut 😋

Yelp
This place is sinful. The glaze donuts are to die for. I can typically pick up a half dozen and chew through them instantly as I drive home. My other guilty pleasure are their BLT sandwiches. The staff is always friendly. Providing service with a smile. A must stop if you are the area. Grab a half dozen glaze and lose yourself in the box.

Yelp
You got to be kidding me the donuts at this place are absolutely horrible. Just look at the blob of dough. It is the absolute, worst doughnut I have ever had in my entire life.

Emae A.

Yelp
I'm a Grandmother Of(6) in Nola I'm from Ohio ..The breakfast croissant and a with the side of bacon was the most awesome experience ever the croissant was so buttery. It was just perfection with the donuts they were warm. They were so delicious and fresh. What a wonderful experience when I'm in town I will order for the children periodically this place is a keeper, wonderful customer service I was pleasantly supremely satisfied, won't go wrong ordering from this establishment. It was a pleasure.

Yelp
Second time ordering using door dash and they replace your order with whatever hard, old, nasty item they choose to. Why is it so difficult to just refund an item that they're out of? No one wants to eat mystery items that are two days old. Gross. Also, we have a child with severe allergies. Quit throwing everything in one box to save money.

Yelp
The food is outstanding rather you won't breakfast lunch or just donuts, you can't go wrong with butter crisp. There's a reason why they've been in business since 1978!

Brittani S.

Yelp
Very Bad Service and rude aggressive staff if you ask for anything they act offended very inattentive food was no good we literally got half of a patty on one of the mini burgers donuts tasted days old and and taste Like freezer Food wanted zero star but forced to put one to add review
google avatar

Jamilla F.

Yelp
Butter Krisp is back and worth the hour wait!!!! The best way to describe these donuts are if dunkin and Krispy Kreme had a baby. It is definitely a little diner, but service is fast based on the volume of people. The line of cars is literally a block down the road!
google avatar

Yelp
It's been a great experience, but I just went when they just opened for the day... totally different experience. Burnt food. They told us they'd be opening later than expected ( which drove away most of the waiting customers ). But as soon as those customers left, they opened 3 minutes later. I don't care so much about that as I do that what they served me was burnt, and they joked about it. Their morning crew is kinda shit...lol. Update: I'm got an undercooked hashbrown patty. I wouldn't normally mind, but it's verrrry much undercooked. I still give you guys 4 stars, but the service today was so, so bad. Maybe it's the cook, idk. But you've always given me the best before now!

Charlene P.

Yelp
Hair in the food. Disgusting. Door dasher delivered our meal that a friend ordered. Had to throw everything away. Will never order again.
google avatar

Freida H.

Yelp
Great donuts. Breakfast and sliders are great. They try hard at the window, but service is super slow. Should have put in two windows during that renovation.
google avatar

Millard B.

Yelp
Amazing Donut shop/diner. Wen't through the Drive through and got fast a speedy service. Car line was long enough to go out to the street but for donuts this good it was worth the wait!
google avatar

Rita U.

Yelp
donuts are way too big and doughy. why did y'all change your recipe? People working are helpful still. Still a fun place.

Alicia M.

Yelp
The donuts are best in town. The burgers are hit and miss. Most of the time they have zero onions on them. That's what makes them so good. Very in consistent. And disappointing. Love the place. Just won't get burgers anymore. I still support them.

Christian C.

Yelp
The place is run in pure chaos. Nobody knows what the other person is doing. Half the time employees are standing around complaining the customers they are serving, while food is piling up in the window. The food is great. The service is well below average.
google avatar

Yelp
Donuts great, butter burgers are my favorite...same like whitecastle or Krystal..you can get traditional breakfast too..damn i wish they would re-open again..still closed as of may 2023

Yelp
Missed you Butter Krisp! For donuts this small local business is a yes. Also a yes for an egg & cheese on croissant. I miss them not being a 24 hour service, though. I keep missing their open hours. But finally did get there. The 50's ambiance was rebuilt but it's the donuts I crave. The Chocolate Dipped Glaze donuts were heavenly. The Apple Fritter was great, too. It's been two weeks & I'm still thinking about those 3 Chocolate Dipped Glaze...fluffy, sugary, perfect chocolate tops. Delicious! I need another visit! Just be careful turning in. Another customer almost clipped my bumper trying to get in the drive thru line first. We were the only two on the street! Clearly, donut passions run high! Service is fine & friendly, if a little bit slow, but the results are great & so worth a wait. Happy to have them reopened!

Yelp
Couldn't wait to get glazed donuts when we discovered BK had reopened. Drive thru wrapped into Old Covington. ($3.00/gal gasoline, +95 d temps, and 60% obese people sit in cars +30 mins) We parked, went in and got our donuts. I can't explain how disappointed we were. Both sides of donuts have no glaze. Thought maybe it was reopening hiccups. Got donuts for last 3 weeks. No improvement. Heard business has changed hands. Probably going to get donuts from Mandeville from now on. What a shame.

Yelp
Don't you just love a true welcome when you visit a place of business?? I know I do. Welp! That is exactly what I received when I dropped in on this diner. Although it was extremely busy with people, they were very welcoming. I grabbed a apple fritter and chose the donut holes for my picky eater! I explained that I needed them to be free from particles from other neighboring pastries because he would probably turn his donut holes down. They understood. I was told to say no more. The experience was quick and effortless. My son enjoyed his treat. We plan to return soon and enjoy some of those hot biscuits! Thumbs Up!!

Yelp
Every time we are in town, we eat at Butter Crisp. I love the atmosphere and the diner food. Great experience tonight!

Yelp
Best donuts around! So much better than any other donut shop - than any I've ever been to anywhere in the US! Do yourself a favor and try a dozen hot glazed - you won't be sorry! Only complaint is hat I wish they would come to the 21st century and get a credit card reader that doesn't require a person to sign for it but rather input their PIN, or better yet, not have to do either (like at other businesses with drive-thrus. It's a pain to have to sign in the drive-thru. Donuts are heavenly though!! And it's open 24 hours - which very few businesses are in Covington
google avatar

Yelp
Can't wait this place to open back up all refreshed and clean and serving deliciousness 24/7
google avatar

Joel G.

Yelp
I arrived in Covington late last night. I was happy to find this 24/7 diner. The girls working late last night were great and fun to talk with. I had the sliders and Cajun fries. Tasty and reminiscent of good old White Castle. I liked the chopped onions and overall taste. The fries were also hot and crispy. I shall return whenever I come into town.

Yelp
The donuts are delicious, amazing selection, but I can't bring myself to go in anymore. They're very nice people, and the service is great, but the amount of flies in the donut case are ridiculous, and that's all I can focus on when I'm trying to pick out my donuts. As a food service worker myself, I know that fly infestations are very difficult to get rid of, particularly in a bakery. But it is your responsibility to figure out where they are coming from, and to get rid of them.
google avatar

Yelp
My wife and I went here to pick up one of those sausage /pigs in the blanket type things because they looked great! They were absolutely dreadful! Please stick to making donuts... no one wants to eat sausage that tastes like it's heavily medicated or rancid! Update - 7-28-20 Over baked Donuts. Will not be returning
google avatar

Lacey D.

Yelp
My husband and I stopped in for Sunday breakfast. It was fairly busy, but our waitress was attentive. The food took a while but was hot and delicious. He got the Philly cheesesteak po boy, and it was really good. I got the bacon, egg and cheese wrap which was huge and delicious. We also split one mini burger which was okay but not great. Overall it was a delicious and affordable meal!
google avatar

Nikki N.

Yelp
I love their donuts and apple fritters. I aways enjoy the breakfast burritos and sausage croissants too! One of my favorite breakfast spots because they have a drive thru and service is always good.
google avatar

Yvette W.

Yelp
Butter Krisp was my go-to for donuts because they were always fresh and the tasty. Today I went and will not go back. The donuts were very greasy. Not sure if it was an off day, a new baker, or a change in recipe.

Yelp
4/14/2018 - Believe it or not... my daughter requested this as her Senior prom dinner spot. I know, but that really happened. And I can't really blame her... it's open 24 hrs and the food is really good greasy diner fare... with great doughnuts on top of it! Surprisingly, prom dresses and tuxedoes abounded as we were not the only ones with this idea... the parking lot was full and we were forced to park next door at McDs (closed already at that point.) Three of us had breakfast plates and I had the swiss mushroom burger again... add bacon. The only complaint was that I didn't get the bacon. Still everyone was satisfied and I forgive the error as the diner was in standing-room-only mode! 5/12/2016 Stopped in for dinner with the family. We had a mix of breakfast and burgers. I added bacon to my Swiss and Mushroom burger and my son had the spicy chicken sandwhich. The two girls had a Grand Slam plate and the little one settled for a jalapeño chilli cheese fry. Everything was good and the food came out surprisingly fast. The diner had a nice 50s feel inside with great music playing. It's a local favorite and definitely worth a visit! Previously...The sign says this is a diner, but it really is a donut shop on steroids! They have burgers, barbecue beef, along with some of the best donuts in the area. They even have hot tamales! Whether you are looking to come inside and sit down in a booth for a dining experience or pick up something good to-go from the drive-thru, this place won't disappoint.

Yelp
Donut run at midnight on a Friday ended up here with a full house and the best service. Glazed, maple bacon donut, coffee, sweet tea, butter bacon cheese burgers, donut burger, Cajun chili fries and sht on a shingle allll hit the spot. It's true when they advertised good food and great service! This is my second time here and I'll def come back!

Yelp
Well, butter krisp.. you used to be my go-to late night drive thru.. but tonight you officially lost my business. I went through and ordered a few items off of their "grill menu", then proceeded to wait in a 30 minute line of cars to get to the window, I don't think to check my food (I've never had to before). I get home & my food is missing multiple ingredients, ingredients that I paid extra for. So I call the restaurant thinking that I would just give them a heads up, maybe make them aware that they need to pay better attention.. and I was accused of lying about my order. I was told to send pictures of my uneaten food to a random cell phone number to verify that it was actually wrong. I don't think they handled the situation very well. I was cheated out of $10 and I have food that I don't want to eat. I'll stay away for a while, they need to get their act together.
google avatar

Yelp
Greasy spoon located in downtown Covington. The diner is great for breakfast as well as late night eats. You can dine in or go through the drive thru. The menu has an assortment of breakfast items as well as donuts. Friendly staff and very reasonable prices.
google avatar

Robby M.

Yelp
Well, stood at the counter for 5 minutes, opened the door a couple times to ring the bell, no one came out. There were a couple of customers drinking coffee, but it wasn't self serve, so I didn't get the cup I was hoping for. I hear they have great food, but it looks like I will never know.
google avatar

Shaun A.

Yelp
BK is a master of what they do. For people looking for Dumkin Donuts with its egg white, turkey sausage no gluten breakfast sandwich this isn't for you. However if you're looking for the donut place your dad use to take you to, just he and you on a Sunday morning this is it. Donuts are awesome and butter burgers are top notch! This is a place that has a burger with the buns being glazed donuts! You want fancy and healthy BK ain't it but if you want awesome old fashioned food? This is your spot
google avatar

Emily T.

Yelp
I've grown up going to Butter Krisp. They have some of the best donuts in town and some of the best King Cakes, too! The hot glazed donuts are always the best because you know that they are made fresh when you order them. The diner is pretty small on the inside. There are 5 booths that can comfortably fit 4 people, and there are 2 large tables that can fit 4 people each. There's 1 small table that sits 2 comfortably, and there's the bar which sits about 10-12. You can always order to-go or use the drive-through.
google avatar

Samantha J.

Yelp
If I could give it negative 5 stars I definitely would!!!! My family and I have been here 4 times and every single time its horrible. The first time we got the king cake which was stale and flavorless. Then the next time we tried again and got a dozen assorted donuts and they were so stale they crumbled apart. The third time we got the burgers which were soggy with grease. Well we decided to give the donuts another try after not being there for years thinking maybe its changed and they are the only donut shop open late around here. Burned donuts!!!! They were so burned we thought the blueberry cake and the chocolate covered cake donuts were chocolate donuts!!!! Needless to say this is and will be the very last time we waste our money at this place. I honestly don't understand how they are still in business!!!!
google avatar

Hailey W.

Yelp
These donuts are so addictive. I would almost recommend against them because they're bad for you. Haha. The blueberry is my absolute favorite. But I've never had a bad donut from this place. Some, like the blueberry, are more of a cake donut, while others, like their glazed, have a lighter more airy texture. These are extremely sweet, so keep that in mind if you have problems with that. Sometimes I can only eat one before I have to call it quits. Their hours are phenomenal, you can come here at 9 pm and drive thru to get your donut fix.
google avatar

Stephanie M.

Yelp
I've only ever ordered from here for delivery but both times I've ordered, my food was incorrect. I've had missing items AND incorrect items. I don't know if they do a better job in person but after these experiences I don't feel inclined to come in. Two stars for the donuts though, they were fresh and delicious.
google avatar

John R.

Yelp
Best Doughnuts on the Northshore but the place is a little run down and the drive through is a tight fit if you have a larger car. The doughnuts come out pretty fast but everything else's takes at least 15-30 min which if your sitting inside isn't a big deal, if your sitting in a car with a toddler is a bad idea (which we learned the hard way).
google avatar

Heidi F.

Yelp
Awesome diner food. The fries are possibly the best cajun fries I've EVER had. Gotta try the Butter crisp donut burger with cajun fries and the hot glazed donuts (the hot glazed are so fresh and crispy)
google avatar

Kim B.

Yelp
Everything and more that you'd expect in a local diner! Awesome fresh donuts, butter burgers are great, tamales are great, and their different breakfast plates are good too! Love this place! Good for kids too!
google avatar

Lisa T.

Yelp
Yum yum....that is all I can say. When I am in town visiting, we always go back. Their products are fresh and delicious. And the king cakes are just as fab, just a little pricey. Oh....and the powdered cream donuts .
google avatar

Yelp
Butter Krisp is a yummy little "greasy spoon" type of 50's themed diner. They are open 24 hours, they have a drive thru, and they serve donuts, burgers, typical breakfast staples and lunch. We stopped in right before noon, but lucky us, they serve breakfast all day. I decided to get the two egg breakfast with bacon, toast and grits. The food came out perfectly cooked to perfection with crispy bacon and butter on the grits. Everything was so good, and while one might say "it's hard to mess up eggs", you would be surprised. Adding to the entire experience was the delightful waitress who was really sweet and fast about getting us coffee refills. I love the decor here! As a fan of all things "retro" the Elvis statue and the jukebox definitely added to the fun vibe of the place. There are pictures of Elvis everywhere and the diner just has a really laid back and "good time" feel. I didn't get to try the donuts this time, but if I am ever back in the area, I will be sure to pick some up.
google avatar

Rei L.

Yelp
I love this place! Do yourself a favor and try the donut grilled cheese. That's right, reread it again. Donut grilled cheese. Mmmmm! All of their glazed donuts are burn your fingerprints off hot and made to order. Whenever I go at night it's hit or miss if their other donuts are super fresh or a little hard. Stick with the hot glazed if you don't wanna take a chance.
google avatar

Miekell T.

Yelp
Ummmmmmmm. I got 2 words De. Licious! Ok! In all seriousness the place is definitely a small neighborhood diner, not much to it but its the people that make the place not the other way around and I had such a great time with the people. The food was very tasty and veryyyy affordable and my table was clean upon approach. I would definitely return and reccomend!
google avatar

Sean F.

Yelp
Stopped here for Saturday brunch on our way to Franklinton. I ordered the "All-American Breakfast" which featured eggs, choice of meat (I got bacon), choice of bread (I got white toast), and grits or hash browns (I got grits). Everything was hot, fresh, and delicious. I also ordered two hot glazed, which were definitely as advertised. So hot I had to let them cool off before I could eat them, but once I let them cool a little, they were great, one of the better donuts I've had. The only thing I didn't think were all that good were the mini "butter-burgers", similar to a White Castle/Krystal burger. The buns they were served on were too dry. That was my only complaint. Overall, a nice way to start the day!
google avatar

Marc V.

Yelp
Butter burgers and fries and donuts. This is the perfect place if you have kids and you have a dance/soccer/theater camp layover. The coffee is good, and if you hold your cup up, they'll bring you some more. Food is consistently very good, and they're open 24 hours, so if a practice runs late, the chauffeur always has somewhere to go. About the service: A lot of young people who probably aren't going to make a career out of listening to people moan about the service at a for God's sake donut shop. Complaining about the service at Butter Krisp it's like going to a whorehouse and saying you don't feel loved. Get over it.
google avatar

Russell S.

Yelp
We had very high hopes for Butter Krisp, but they fell completely flat. Burgers - Advertised as Angus beef. They looked like preformed patties from a food service company and tasted like they were previously frozen. The texture of the meat was not good. Fries - typical krinkle cut style. Donuts - The hot glazed donut was hot, fresh made to order, and tasted like a Krispy Kreme. Cleanliness- the restaurant is dirty! The all in one holders for menus, salt, etc. we're dirty and I don't think they move them when wiping down the counter. If they do then it's been too long since the counter was wiped down. When the kitchen doors open (which was often) you could tell it wasn't very neat/clean. Wait staff - ok. For sitting at the counter I wouldn't expect to run my drink dry and it sit for a bit. Overall, the donut was the highlight of the meal. The place was so dirty I won't even go back for a good donut.

Yelp
Told you....I would be back! (LOL) Your glazed Donuts are awesome! :) Next time I just have to remember to take a picture before I eat the donuts!!!

Clinton F.

Yelp
Wow.. While I love the food(donuts) and have waited in a long line many many time there for the donuts and food.. Vanessa's visceral behavior / customer service is severely lacking. After waiting 20+ mins for food and 5 mins at window.. I'm told to pull around .. I ask for my $$ back and Vanessa refused to provide my full refund amount I had signed for just moments before on the credit card and then went on to 'crumple up' the receipt in my face.. I left w no food or refund (zero), nor any understanding or appreciation of the time I invested today and many other days in their line.. Customer Service matters.. Incredibly disappointed !!

Dabney H.

Yelp
Would be 0 stars but I had to put 1. The service takes forever it is so slow it's not even worth it.
