Where to Eat and Drink During the Kentucky Derby Day in Metro Detroit | Eater Detroit

"Butter Run Saloon is known for its wide selection of whiskeys, which makes a bourbon event like the Kentucky Derby a natural fit. On May 5, the bar will be screening the race and serving a special menu that includes Woodford Reserve mint juleps (and margarita specials). Butter Run will also be giving away prizes for the best fascinators." - Eater Staff

Google
Awesome bar with tons of bourbon and scotch options. Pub feel with retro decor.

Google
Visiting from Canada was invited to Butter Run Saloon, the place is small but has that very vintage nostalgic look inside and the tables are filled with vintage items that is very cool. The food was good the Fried pickles are a must have. The server was amazing. Really enjoyed the look and feel of this place.

Google
Husband and I were looking for some place different to eat dinner last night. Sick of the same old places and I have wanted to eat here for some time, but it isn't just around the corner from our home. Finally made it here and it was a great decision. Cool atmosphere, interesting items are throughout the establishment, friendly service and delicious food. I had the Chicken and Waffles and hubby had the BBQ Corned Beef with french fries. Not only did the food look delicious, but it was delicious! The beer is reasonably priced too. We will be returning to try the burgers next time. Thank you for a great first impression and dining experience. Highly recommend trying this bar/restaurant.

Google
I have always enjoyed coming here with my family. It's in a great little area with lots of life during the summer time! Great vibes and a caring staff.

Google
This is a nice local with cold beer great bourbon selection and tasty food. It's a bit crammed and the music the girls choose SUUUUUUUUUUUCKS but the beer is cold and the menu is solid. I think the prices are pretty good for the value, but seating sucks, it's so uncomfortable, but I think that's sort of the appeal. The bathroom is disgusting and Parking is aweful. But lll always come back. It's a great local.

Google
Stopped in because the roads were flooded and what a pleasant surprise! Gigi was exceptional and the food was absolutely delicious. Hand breaded mushrooms, hand breaded Cod, large portions and very reasonably priced. More Bourbon choices than I have ever seen. Comfortable atmosphere and great location.

Google
Good prices, good beer. Food is really good as well especially if you are into sandwiches. They use fairway packing for their meat which is always a good advantage. Worth visiting!

Google
We've come here several times. Sometimes for a burger and a whiskey, sometimes for a sandwich and a beer. All lovely and delicious decisions. But today I ate the best chicken and waffles I've ever had. Best chicken and waffles in the Metro Detroit area for sure. I mean, I'm not any kind of Chicken-N-Waffles-ologist but let me tell you... I've done the math. These were outstanding. Two chicken breasts, perfectly fried, and two of those tasty Belgium waffles with the little sugar crystals in em. Good syrup. Came with soup, too, which was a solid clam chowder. The waitress said it's only been on the menu for three weeks. I hope it stays for a long, long time.

Yelp
Me and my buddies went out to our first bar together after turning 21 and this was the spot. The service was super quick and attentive as well as being very polite in answering any questions we had. There was some bits of food on the floor that hadn't been swept but other then the place was very nice and decorated fest for Christmas. The food was very good quality especially for the bar and any of their seasonal drinks are a 15/10 you have to try it!

Yelp
Can't go wrong yet Butter Run. There chef takes pride in everything he cooks. Always has great specials. If you're lucky get the short ribs they're totally awesome. Their burgers are great the wings are phenomenal. They even take pride in their side vegetables. If you're in St Clair Shores make it over to a Butter Run.

Charlie D.

Yelp
Worst "lobster rolls" I have ever had. Restaurants has mice and clearly looks like the kitchen has never been cleaned.
google avatar

Yelp
Friday prime rib special-all out at 9 pm. No problem. Ordered escargot, steak bites & salad to share. All tasted great. Waitress- who was awesome, brought out 2 salads, to compensate for no prime rib - nice touch. 1 tall draft ipa & 2 glasses of wine. Bill came to $80 including a good tip. Fun place . Better than bar food.

Reid K.

Yelp
Another great place for burgers & beer. They serve bourbon flights (you get to choose brands). Mmmmm
google avatar

CJ M.

Yelp
Amazing atmosphere! The service was good. However, the food was very underwhelming... which was highly disappointing for all of us. We really wanted this spot to kill it, but the food came out short. The hard beer cheeses, lack of home cooking and more store bought dishes made us not finish our food. Hope they can get back to the roots they explained in their menu.
google avatar

Paula B.

Yelp
Use to be a great place to have a good meal, but as everything else times are changing. Prime rib is now $32. for same portion, asked for perch dinner sautéed that had no flavor and was 3 pieces. Pork chops were dry and very thin. Not sure about visiting again.

Yelp
What a fun little adventure to the Butter Run Saloon! We had a round of drinks and loved the bourbon selection! We also had pretzels, soups and sandwiches. We were all impressed and happily full when we left. Note: My daughter said this was the best Shirley temple she has ever had!

Ty B.

Yelp
All the whiskey at a Great price. I don't remember the food but the flight of whiskey was awesome
google avatar

Adam S.

Yelp
Great small bar ambiance along with one of the best offerings of upscale whiskeys. A wide range scotch, bourbon, and ryes. This is paired with a menu of classic bar foods / sandwiches. Worth the trip

Yelp
I happened to be in the area and decided to give this place a try. I had heard they had an impressive whiskey/bourbon selection. But I was just going to stop in and have one. When I got there it was pretty quiet. The bar tender, Bea, was amazing and super sweet and helpful. She showed me the extensive selection of liquor. I decided to just grab a beer. A group of boaters came in, and despite my objections bought me a second beer. They seemed harmless and very nice, but Bea kept checking on me. I loved that. She made sure they weren't harassing me in any way. I ended up sitting with them and we shared some Escargot, which I didn't think I would like. It was amazing. Bea continued to make sure I was ok. I left as they were doing shots. I absolutely loved this place. It was a Boujee dive bar. Ha. So much to see on every wall. A crazy amount of alcohol. Amazing service. And the food was incredible. This may become a fav for me.

Yelp
Quick and friendly service. Their burgers, Chicken and waffles and Onions rings are amazing!

Yelp
Tried this place for first time. Late lunch on Tuesday afternoon. It is a bar. Inside is small with tables close together, 4 or 2 seats. There is outside seating. Waitstaff very friendly. I ordered Blake's Traffic Jam hard cider $6 for 16 oz. Reubens $12 added onion rings $3.50. Sandwich was huge. As were the onion rings. Corned beef real, not deli. Onion rings battered dip very crunchy, really good!!! Took home half sandwich and onion rings.

Yelp
This is heaven if you are a bourbon drinker. It's a long list and super interesting. They may not have all and they do have most. Bring your glasses- it's fine print and dark- especially if you're over 50 ! (At night it's dimly lit) Wood everywhere and touches of local decor like year books from local spots. Had the fried mushrooms and onion rings. The baskets were huge! Wonderful breading and healthy serving. Also- nice beer list. Low key and nice atmosphere. It's cozy inside and they do have a patio. Parking is tight and you may not be able to get into lot. Friendly staff- good service.

Tom F.

Yelp
Always good food. We went for breakfast and it was nice with a Bloody Mary to help it down.
google avatar

Betsy K.

Yelp
Super cool little pub-I love the decorations it's a real authentic looking pub. The food was not that great. There were six of us for lunch/drinks- half of us had the half soup /half sandwich. The clam chowder was ok-nothing special, the corn beef was just a small pile of string beef-It had nothing else on it. Another person had a chicken salad and it hardly had any chicken on a it- she complained and the waitress was not very happy about it. Our waitress was the worst thing about the place. It's not somewhere where I would go back to.
google avatar

Rick G.

Yelp
The service was excellent. Came for a cocktail and someplace to talk to my friend. Rustic setting but warm and friendly. Small as bars go, with better than average food offerings. Several people came just to eat. I'd go back for food another time.
google avatar

Kristin C.

Yelp
Came with a couple of girlfriends to enjoy brunch. We sat in the cute igloos, which were a bit cold without the sun out. I had the bbq corned beef sandwich which was so good! We also ordered the potato skins and fried pickles. Both were very good. The service was very goof. You are on a 1.5 hour time limit with the igloos and have to make a reservation.

Yelp
First-and-foremost, this place is a bar. This particular bar has the best selection of scotch, bourbon, and whiskey I've ever seen. If there's a brand or vintage you can't usually find when you go out, try here. That being said, my expectations for the food were not high but they were easily exceeded. I've eaten here a few times and I've left happy and full [and maybe a little tipsy] every time. I usually get a fish dish and it's always really tasty. The waitress says they make everything from scratch except the fries [chips] and even those are really good. Last time I was there we sat outside. I was chilly so I had some chili to warm up and it was really good. Not very spicy. My son got the stacked ham sandwich with cheddar instead of swiss. I tried a bite and it was really good. They use the thick-cut ham. It reminded me of a ham and cheddar hot pocket, which for me is a compliment; I love those things. On the cocktail side of things, they don't have anything too fancy, but it's really not that kind of place. Think Jack-and-Coke, straight-up, on-the-rocks. Maybe a martini or a manhattan or an old-fashioned. If it's a cocktail that's been around since prohibition, you can order it here. I've said it before and I'll say it again. The one good thing to come out of COVID dining restrictions is the Al Fresco dining. I love their outdoor "beach" with all the picnic tables. However, they didn't have the staff to open this when I was last in, but I can walk to this place, so you know I'll be back. In the picture, I convinced my son to keep eating by telling him when he was full, his belly button would go from "innie" to "outie" so he's eating fries while watching his belly button. Good times!

Yelp
Decided to try Butter Run Saloon since we seen it in "The whiskey advocate" as one of the top 50 whiskey bars across the nation. The whiskey/bourbon menu did not disappoint and the food was surprisingly great for a small rough bar. Service was great as well. One star off since it was really loud and could barely have a conversation, but it was tons of fun
google avatar

Danielle T.

Yelp
Such an amazing spot with a old vintage bar style. Small and quaint which I like, Seems like a friendly place where there are regulars forsure! I ordered the Butter Run Deli and OH MY GOD is all I have to say! Honestly it might have been the best sandwhich I've ever had. I also believe the thousand island dressing was homemade and out of this world! Our waiter was such a sweetheart and everyone was so friendly! I know I will be back to try some of the other sandwiches!
google avatar

Kevin C.

Yelp
Been trying to get this place for awhile, such a cool little place super friendly bartender!! Amazing bourbon selection, great food only bad thing ...... bar stools not very comfy. Unique to say the least custom metal stools was afraid id cut my legs on them lol

Ed R.

Yelp
Located within walking distance. Food is always fresh even with take-out. There is a smaller parking lot with addition of out door dining.
google avatar

Wanda K.

Yelp
Food order was wrong. Beer was tepid at best. Service was horrible, she didn't want to be there. Told us her coworkers medical issues (specifically) and that's why she had to work. Ambiance would be nice if they would allow to sit in the picnic table section. It was Closed, no help we were told. So we are Done with the Run
google avatar

Mike S.

Yelp
I have never seen as extensive a bourbon list as at the Butter Run Saloon. Only knock was with such a list it is hard to keep them all in stock. We were there in prime rib night so the place was packed and very loud. Food was okay, drinks made up for the food.

Cameo M.

Yelp
I've been here twice. I liked the nostalgic atmosphere but the food is horrible! I was so very disappointed because I was hoping to find a local bar my husband and I could enjoy going to for dinner. I won't be back as I don't want to waste any more money on food that's not edible.
google avatar

Yelp
We live in the neighboring town, and like to leave our town as not to run into people we know and have to pretend we want to talk to them, so hence a new spot for us. I drive by here every morn on the way to my office, and bookmarked it for future. Well tonight was future night, and so happy it was. Let the pics speak for themselves. Great menu, great service! Love this place and plan on being a regular.
google avatar

Jeremy P.

Yelp
Great beer and whiskey selection. Friendly staff and great food. Recommendation include: Rueben's, burgers, and beef barley (must have). Also, surprisingly good breakfast.

J R.

Yelp
We've been here numerous times over the years . Always great food, friendly service with never any issues . Highly recommend the mushroom burger & onion rings ! Awesome ! All the other menu items we have tried are great
google avatar

Mike L.

Yelp
This old school pub has an extensive selection of bourbons and a ton of character. Everyone's food was delicious. The onion rings were huge. I'm looking forward to my next visit.
google avatar

Jeanette B.

Yelp
Friendly, knowledgeable staff, pleasant atmosphere, fantastic drink selection, reasonable prices, and the food is fantastic. This might be my new favorite local place.
google avatar

Steve K.

Yelp
Love this place. If you also love bourbon, you will too. They have an amazing list of bourbons (scotches, Irish whiskeys as well!) that gives you an opportunity to try some pretty unique and semi-obscure brown liquids. Atmosphere is old-time roadhouse kinda bar, and the typical bar food is pretty good. Hand-battered onion rings, steak fries, an assortment of burgers and sandwiches. We are looking forward to trying their fish & chips on the next visit. Friendly and attentive service without being annoying. Met some nice folks at the bar who live a few blocks away from us. Great spot!
google avatar

Yelp
I had the full Michigan experience with the stacked ham. A nice sandwich. But the most memorable aspect of our visit was that I finally heard the Michigan accent. Definitely not a Wisconsin or Minnesota accent. And, of course, there is no Nebraska accent.
google avatar

Matt B.

Yelp
I had some breakfast here recently and ordered the eggs benedict. They were pretty good, however the hollandaise sauce was really cold, and almost gritty. Also, the waitstaff seems a bit aloof. Almost as if they can't handle waiting on multiple people. I do enjoy the fact that I can go there any try basically any bourbon that I might desire.
google avatar

Emet D.

Yelp
Hugeeee selection from bourbon to scotch and everything else. Great music similar to XM chill. Bartenders Whitney & Mandy were the only 2 at the bar, given the amount of people there were on a Friday night they were awesome and attentive when needed whilst sitting at the bar. Had the Aberlour 16 yr which was recommended for a single malt. However, the 12 yr. costs more for a reason (it's better). Regardless, a great bourbon/scotch/whiskey bar that is not in downtown Detroit. They have of both beer and whiskey that go from your cheap redneck fix to your $100+ pours.
google avatar

Anthony F.

Yelp
Above average bar with great list of whiskey and beer on tap. Unfortunately, the food was so-so. I will say the fried pickles were good. But the pretzels app and white fish dinner wasn't worth wasting time on. So in short, just go for drinks ;)
google avatar

Ryan S.

Yelp
Came here for breakfast and mimosas; the best way to start the day. If two orders of bacon which I had to have the cook a bit more, but then it was fantastic. The eggs and toast were good; not in love with the hash browns which are the cubed kind, not the stringy. So couldn't give them the five stars. The sausage was also very good. Overall good place to come; good bacon. Great mimosas and morning scene. In a side note, some others had the burger and it was very good.
google avatar

Sandi M.

Yelp
Not a regular. Even with the party of six they managed to find a place for us. We were working on a house all day installing new exterior doors so we're not really pretty :-) Beef tips, Burgers and salads plus Shirley temples and beer are fantastic. Our waitress was fantastic really attentive and we received our beers quickly. The food also arrived within a very reasonable time.

Larry L.

Yelp
Nice for a beer and a sandwich. Food is great the waiter is nice. Tiny bar with no frills about it.
google avatar

Shanon M.

Yelp
I sat outside and enjoyed the nice weather with my family enjoying a delicious cocktails.
google avatar

Jodi C.

Yelp
Less than 1 star rating.. Myself and co worker went in today for lunch. We sat there for over 20 minutes waiting to be waited on. When a waitress approached the table next to us (employees working on a web page) we asked her if we could order, she put her finger up and said "hold on, I am not your server. That is unacceptable!! We waited over 20 minutes (was not overly busy) and still didn't order our food. So we left and upon leaving there was 3 girls, one that looked to be in manager attire outside the back door smoking. This isn't the first time that I have heard that if your not a regular, then they don't pay much attention to you, but this was the first time I experienced it myself. Will never go back.

Melissa K.

Yelp
Brunch here is amazing. Great whiskey selection as well. I enjoy their daily soups on a late night. Summer time in the patio is the best.
google avatar

Stephen I.

Yelp
The food was spot on well my dad needed new bacon and needed wheat toast, but regardless it was delicious, the French dip was good but I was expecting g medium size hoagie, roast beef and the ag-ju sauce on the side, but unfortunately the dipping sauce must have spilled and mad my sandwich soggy but yet it was still delicious. I would say that improvement is needed, but still I'd comeback and still order the sand also if I was ordering a French dip I prefer my bread toasted I understand some may not like it toasted.
google avatar

Chris M.

Yelp
In town for a little bit, found this gem. No frills bar with amazing whiskey and great food and staff. If your looking at this place as an option, you should already be here. Cheers
google avatar

Jessica Y.

Yelp
They really gave this place a makeover. With a fine selection of liquors, a menu of craft cocktails(listed on the website, not in their binder menu), and a full menu, this place could be the best in St. Clair Shores. They have both indoor and outdoor seating, not like a great view but the chairs are comfy! If you're vegetarian or vegan there are hardly any options. Women like to eat light with their booze. I had a Traverse City Salad, no chicken, plus cucumber and tomato and it was great. The raspberry vinaigrette was THE best too. They need some more modern dishes with their great fresh cocktails. Ideas: cauliflower steak, Mediterranean flatbread, local bakery bread with infused olive oil, gazpacho, etc. Still, I definitely wanna do a whiskey tasting!

Carrie Z.

Yelp
We went there this weekend for a couple of drinks and apps and while sitting there a mouse came running along the wall! It grossed me out and I wanted to leave immediately. The waitress tried to catch it with a cup which was gross also! The wait staff wasn't alarmed by this so it led us to believe it happens quite a bit. The place was also packed so to see a mouse in a busy place seemed unusual since they're normally afraid of people. There is killing more than just the one!
google avatar

Gerianne A.

Yelp
Took forever in a day. Very lacksy daisy. They brought out wrong sandwich. After 20 minutes told us they were out of turkey. Had to reorder. Another long wait. Still wrong item. Sorry, but please get it together.

Lahry J.

Yelp
food not worth - price - greasiest hamburger I have ever been served - it dripped grease - wanted fries with burger and was served wedge cut not told that they don't have fries - onion rings had hardly any breading on them -maybe 5% was covered - help had an attitude - someone needs to take over and clean house or you will just be closing the doors - would not tell anyone to eat at this place - as was told Long Ago by a Premier Chef - ''if a place cannot do a burger right don't eat anything they serve ''
google avatar

Bob N.

Yelp
DON'T READ THIS, if you like good food. Read this if you like top notch made onsite fresh awesome food! For starters I'd ordered beef barley soup, well they use dry-aged prime rib for the beef. Loaded with veggies and good lord I could talk all day about how good it was. Next were the hand battered toorder onion rings, these alone are worth the trip. Then the burger ohh the burger, a special blend done by Fairway Packing for them, hand patted on site ughhh slobber slobber. They also serve dry-aged Prime Rib dinners on Friday and Saturdays, yes I'm going back tonight. They serve over 50 single malt scotches and a ton of beers with about 20 on tap although the tap system is not yet up and running. So in conclusion don't go here, because I don't want to stand in line. LOL
