The 16 Best Cakes in San Francisco | Eater SF

"The San Francisco cake shop Butter& earned its popularity with pithy sayings inscribed upon cakes, but it’s the flavors that kept customers coming back. Gorgeous stacks of light brown sugar cake are stacked with your choice of flavors like brown butter and Meyer lemon or sweet cream and berries. Options also include fully frosted cakes with designs like marble, ombre, and dinos. Delivery or pickup in the Dogpatch are both available." - Becky Duffett

Butter& Lands in Sunny New Dogpatch Bakery Space Serving Adorable Single-Serving and Breakfast Cakes - Eater SF

"For longtime customers of Butter&, the San Francisco bakery that went viral during the pandemic for its “quarantine cakes,” the business’s new Dogpatch storefront is most likely a welcome achievement. Those who’ve stuck with Butter& owner Amanda Nguyen from the early days have gone from picking up cake orders at her home to picking them up on the curb outside an industrial building that housed the bakery’s commercial kitchen. That last space was inconvenient both for the customers who had to wait outside and for staff who had to trek up and down three flights of stairs with precious desserts. But with the new Butter& storefront, located in the former Noon All Day and Kin Khao space at 690 Indiana Street, all that is about to change. It’s not just a comfortable place for Butter& customers to pick up orders, but also a way to place pastry chefs front and center, and venture into new avenues for the bakery including the addition of savory items and drinks. While whole cakes will be available for pre-order and pick-up, the business is also offering day-of purchases — and adding entirely new offerings to the menu." - Dianne de Guzman

The Prettiest Takeout in San Francisco - Eater SF

"Very early on during the region-wide shelter in place, the Dogpatch-based custom cake shop Butter&, known for its modern, buttercream-frosted special-occasion cakes, pivoted to selling mostly what it calls “quarantine cakes” ($50–$95) — miniature layer cakes, just five inches in diameter and sized to serve two to four people. They’re perfect for the smaller, more intimate celebrations folks are having while cooped up at home. They’re available in six different versions, including the salted caramel and chocolate flavor pictured above. Order online for pickup or delivery." - Luke Tsai

Best cake ever. We order from butter& all the time. It has sort of become our tradition these past two years. The roast berries and sweet cream is so so good! The gluten free one version is very good too. I can attest that their black sesame and red bean and the sweet cream and roasted berries are simply the best (the photos don't do justice to how good the cake is). Take my word for it.

Google
This is my absolute favorite bakery in the bay area and the only one I will order celebratory cakes from. Their cakes have graced many, many family events both large and small. They are consistently of the highest standard, both incredibly delicious and beautiful. Their gluten free cake tastes just as good as their regular. I also have nothing but praise for the team, and with the myriad of orders and deliveries I've received there has never been one issue.

Google
We are so thrilled with our wedding cake from Butter& … a lot of research went into finding a cake that was healthier than your traditional wedding cakes, customizable and represented our timeless wedding theme. Butter& exceeded our expectations - our cake was so fresh, divinely tasting and we couldn’t be happier. We ordered a mini cake as it was a small intimate wedding with family - and it was the perfect size. The house-made compote of pureed strawberries was amazing!!! wow wow wow! It did not disappoint. Highly recommend especially if you are looking for a healthier option that packs all the yummy flavor

Google
Tried the lemon and pistachio & rose flavors. Both were soooo good!!! I like how both flavors are mild yet still very rich (not sure if that make sense tho). I personally enjoyed the pistachio & rose one more. I like the subtle rose aroma aftertaste. Note that the cake should be eaten at room temperature. The texture will be kinda like a more moist pound cake. Tbh the flavors weren’t particularly surprising, but the texture of the cake and cream was incredible, and I don’t think I’ve had anything quite like it before.

We ordered a Kintsugi brown butter and lemon small wedding cake from Butter& and everything was seamless. I really appreciated Amanda staying in touch with me throughout every step. The cake was absolutely delicious and beautiful.. it was super light and not super sweet or tart. A perfect balance. I’m actually ordering another cake from them next month! Highly recommend!!!!

Google
I’ve ordered from Butter& for years and have been a happy customer! I love their beautiful shop, but even before that, online ordering, pickup, communication, and customer service have always been efficient and easy. The icing on the cake (pun intended ;) is the yummy cakes and beautiful decoration. Our family likes to try new flavors from time to time, and they’re always good. You won’t be disappointed. Thanks, Butter& family.

Google
Cake was delicious. Pick up was easy. Staff was so helpful. This is the third year in a row we’ve gotten my daughter’s birthday cake here. She is gluten free, and the gluten free brown sugar cake is great. This cake felt really special and was beautiful. My daughter wanted a different combo than was available online, and the staff accommodated us and followed up by email and text. We ordered a relatively small, inexpensive cake, but they still made us feel like important clients.

We’re very excited to be working with Butter& for our upcoming wedding! Their cakes are beautiful and delicious. The online ordering process is easy and flexible, as they let you make adjustments to your order up until the week before your event! Planning a wedding can feel wasteful and frivolous at times so I feel good knowing that Butter&’s ethics align with mine too! A+! Update: as expected, our wedding cake was beautiful AND delicious! Our guests loved it and I can’t wait to find an excuse to order from them again! Thank you for making our wedding day feel so special!

Yelp
I've tried almost every cake on their menu, and they've all been fantastic. The consistency in quality and flavor keeps me coming back. Highly recommend this place

Yelp
Everything with Butter& was excellent, from the beginning of the order down to the last bite. Excellent customer service: friendly and responsive. As for their cakes, they are moist and not overly sweet. Other bakeries have over a dozen flavors. Butter& perfects the few they have. The last cake I ordered was their small two-tier Monochrome Brown Butter & Meyer Lemon cake. It did not disappoint. It was the perfect blend of sweet and tart. No matter which flavor you choose, you will enjoy every bite. Then there are their simple & elegant designs. The cakes are so pretty that you'll hesitate to cut into it, but once you taste a slice, you'll tear it up.

Yelp
I taste tested two cakes from here - the lemon white cake and the strawberry white cake (not sure of the names) - in sheet cake format. Presentation was pretty, and both were very moist. I preferred the strawberry - the tartness of the berry made every other component pop. I wouldn't call it "not too sweet," but it was tasty. Perhaps I prefer even less sweet cakes, but for reference, I very rarely have sweets. I tried their fruit tarts afterward, and it was a welcome less-sweet option - the custard and fruit were quite good, a bite was tasty. The bread part felt a little hard, but maybe this was because it was sitting out for a time. Price - perusing the website, it's definitely on the more expensive end for cakes. But the design is great, so you're also paying for that (and of course, SF location). Overall would consider ordering a strawberry white cake for a special occasion.

Yelp
Their cakes are simple and elegant and perfect for any celebration or to even just indulge once in a while. Husband pre-ordered a dark chocolate cake with raspberry filling for my birthday; it was spongey, moist and delicious. Not too sweet. They even included a cute candle :) There's decent parking in the area and they even bring out any larger cakes to your car. It's located a few blocks away from the main shops in Dogpatch. Can't wait to try other cakes from them.

Yelp
Have you ever savored something so exquisite that it left you yearning for more, not just in taste, but in the sheer thrill of discovery? Imagine stumbling upon a creation so tantalizing, you wonder how someone could master such a perfect blend of flavors and then generously offer it to the world. It's like catching a glimpse of culinary heaven, accessible to all. How does such brilliance come to be? Answer: Berries and Cream from Butter&

Yelp
The owner, Amanda, personally reached out to me shortly after I wrote a review regarding the delivery mishap with our elopement cake. Though the delivery situation was not Butter&'s fault, Amanda apologized, fully refunded our order without us asking, and collected details about our delivery to help improve their courier service to prevent future delivery issues. All in all I think this goes to show how much Butter& values their business and their customers.

Yelp
I had a truly wonderful experience with Butter& from beginning to end! We ordered an at home cake tasting which was amazing. We decided to use this bakery for our wedding cake and couldn't have been more pleased. Online ordering was very easy and organized, communication was amazing and execution was on point. We opted for delivery on our wedding day which was also flawless execution. The cake was exactly as we had ordered and very moist and flavorful. 10/10 recommend.

Yelp
An absolutely STUNNING cake. We ordered it for my partner's birthday and while it was on the pricier end ($65 for small cake, +$12 for local delivery), it was so worth it - delicious (vanilla bean flavor) and not too sweet either, with classy decorative flowers. Only ordered like ~2 days in advance too which was very convenient. Thank you Butter& for a lovely celebration!

Yelp
I chose Butter& to make the human cake for a dog party I was throwing. All the humans loved the cake and were impressed to see a decal of my toy poodle on the cake! Debb at Butter& graciously worked with me to alter the Pooh's Adventure Cake to use my dog instead of Pooh on it! I am so grateful for their participation and know I will always come here to celebrate any special occasion!

Yelp
I stopped in for a last minute birthday cake and was delighted to see that there was still a strawberries and cream cake (limited amounts) in a small size (the cutie size feeds 2 to 3 people). We absolutely loved this cake! The attention to detail is fantastic; the cake is so moist and well balanced to the strawberry filling and cream, and the cake is also sweet but not overbearing so. The shop has friendly staff and a cute ambiance if you want to enjoy just one slice and a drink in store or at the patio outside. The only thing to note is that the price is steep, at $30 for a small cake, but it's quite worth it! We'll be back!

Yelp
Truly decadent sweet treat. I got the brown butter lemon cake slice and it was divine. The buttercream was perfectly rich, definitely not too sweet and had a hint of salt which I loved. The lemon filling was sour and tart, a perfect balance with the sweet, soft sponge and buttery cream. The to-go package was also adorable, I enjoyed the sturdy bag, it made the purchase feel like a special gift. I'd definitely want to come back to try more flavors, especially the vanilla. Overall great service and even greater cakes!

Yelp
One of the few places that offer 2-4 people size cakes that actually tastes good, made with quality ingredients and is picture ready! I recently came to Butter& to pick up a birthday cake. They don't have a ton of flavors to choose from but have their staples and a limited time flavor, which was the strawberry and cream. For something that is picked up last minute or same day, you can't go wrong here. They offer a lot of options for custom cakes and seeing photos and cakes in person, I can tell they deliver nothing short of quality. I would definitely do a custom cake with them in the future. The cake I picked up was really moist, flavorful, not too sweet and the perfect icing that isn't full of sugar. It was a well balanced cake that we enjoyed very much.

Yelp
I've heard so much about Butter& cakes on social media, but I haven't had a chance to try or order from them until this past week. I had placed an order for a cake to be delivered to a friend to celebrate his 30th birthday. I ordered the Exposé // Birthday - Cutie (1-2 servings) / Sweet Cream + Roasted Berries cake with "hbd" in gold on top. I'm impressed with their incredible communication. The team contacted me prior to delivery to ask for my friend's number to ensure the cake would be delivered seamlessly and provide tracking. And according to my friend, in his words, the birthday cake was "very yummy" and "not too sweet", which means it's Asian approved! I'm very pleased and will be ordering again in the future to have a taste.

Ranjan S.

Yelp
The space and the cake were both very pretty. It's a beautiful bakery with high ceilings and a setup like a scene out of a movie. There are half-decorated cakes everywhere and rows of fridges hiding even more cakes. Location is pretty easy to park at, so that was also nice. Found a spot right out front. The cake itself was pretty good. I did the gluten-free Meyer lemon and brown butter cake, and the cake itself was good. I wasn't a huge fan of the lemon flavor with the frosting, but it's still one of the better GF options out there. The cake was smaller than I expected. It was $35 for a cake about the size of my hand -- I'm used to ~$60 for a full-sized GF cake, so it felt a bit pricey. Also, they don't answer the phone, though they were relatively responsive over text.

Yelp
Butter& is the real deal! Hands down the best cake I've ever had in my life. My fiancé surprised me with a hazelnut chocolate cake and it was so delicious. The filling had a slight hazelnut crunch to it and the chocolate was decadent and really high quality. It had the perfect cake to frosting ratio and I loved how the cake itself wasn't too sweet. We followed the instructions and let the cake sit at room temperature for three hours and the buttercream became the perfect consistency. The service is top notch, they're really attentive to detail and we really appreciated the confirmation and clarification texts during the delivery time frame. They even changed the writing color to silver instead of gold at his request because I'm a huge silver girly! This is definitely going to be my go to spot for events and birthdays :)

Yelp
My sis ordered me a surprise birthday cake from here and it was delicious! It was such a simple and classy cake. I loved how moist it was with the perfect amount of frosting. I think the filling was something with berries. I will definitely order from here, highly recommend!

Yelp
Nice store, the cake tasted ok and service could be better, considering the premium price tag.

Joon Young L.

Yelp
Highly recommend! They are very professional: transparent in pricing, delivery was prompt and on time and cake was completely as seen in their photos. The process was: - Tried their cakes in store (highly recommend! they have in store seasonal flavors not on the website such as tiramisu which we were able to order for our cake) - Placed order online and was able to communicate quickly with them via both text and email - Bit before wedding day received a preview photo of the cake that looked exactly as on the websites! - Day of wedding received communication promptly and was able to see delivery location. Was on time and cake was as seen in the previews. It was amazing! If you want a tasty and beautiful cake with stress free delivery / what it'll look like this place is the place for you!
google avatar

Michelle P.

Yelp
I got the cake tasting box ($50) which comes with 5 slices all different flavors. I also got an additional seasonal flavor ($9). The brown butter lemon and the strawberry chocolate cakes were my favorite. The buttercream isn't overly sweet and the flavors worked so well together. Other flavors were good too but were your everyday flavors. The display of their cakes is beautiful. Only downside was some of the cakes were on the dryer side. I'm thinking because they're individually sliced and "open to air". I would definitely get the flavors unique to their shop again.

Yelp
The social media hype brought me here but was I was very disappointed upon getting there. The cakes look nowhere as good nor as large as they do online. The have the photo setup out in the store and it's a Hollywood production. The location is a pickup spot. Although they do sell slices, there is nowhere inside to enjoy it. The store sells its cakes as premium but they charge for bags, and use very ordinary packaging and don't provide the peripherals that other high end stores do like cutting knife, plates, and candles. I was in essence punished for buying too much. I got 3 slices and couldn't carry it all by hand. They charged me a $1 without telling me for a bag that couldn't fit everything. The top slice eventually fell out in the car and got damaged... The sesame cake had the flavor profile of sesame paste that is as good as the ones I've had in China but it's not worth the money and I prefer the OG recipe/food form.

Yelp
I was looking for a last minute birthday cake and I discovered that Butter& was near me. It was hard to call and get in touch with someone there to verify the options they had, so I walked in instead. They had a few options for the Mini size and we went with the Chocolate flavor. They even added a cute "hbd" script on top for us and provided a candle. We loved the cake and would definitely order here again!
google avatar

Fiona Y.

Yelp
Butter& is the perfect place to order that special celebration cake. I stumbled upon this gem while looking for a birthday cake and am so happy to have found it! Ordering on their website is super straightforward and you can also choose to have a special message written on your cake to make the cake even more personalized (for an extra cost). I ordered a hazelnut and chocolate cake on a Friday afternoon (for Sunday morning pick up) and received an immediate confirmation text. I also received a text on Saturday to let me know that my cake is on track for pick up on Sunday. I loved this level of communication as it was a peace of mind that everything was ready to go. The cake comes packed in a beautifully presented, classic box. It came with a candle, which saved us a trip to Target! Overall, the process was extremely seamless. The cake itself was so yummy!! We didn't have time to let the cake sit out during the first time we had it, so the buttercream was definitely on the harder side. However, during the second time, I let the cake sit out for 3 hours and the buttercream was nice and smooth. The cake isn't too sweet, so each bite leaves you wanting more. Can't wait to come back to Butter& to try their other flavors and cake designs!

Yelp
Service: Picking up a last-minute chocolate cake from this chic bakery for my husband's birthday turned out to be a fantastic decision. The service was on point, and the cake exceeded our expectations. Despite the last-minute nature of our order, the staff was accommodating and ensured we got a delightful treat for the celebration. The pricing might be a bit higher, but the incredible flavor more than justifies it. Ambiance: It's a beautiful and chic bakery. Even if it's just a quick stop for a cake, the surroundings contribute to the overall experience. The tone suggests a positive and visually appealing atmosphere, enhancing the joy of picking up a special dessert. Food: Now, onto the star of the show - the chocolate cake. It was nothing short of amazing. Described as decadent and chocolatey with perfect buttercream, it sounds like a dream for chocolate lovers. The breakdown of cake sizes and pricing is a helpful touch for those planning their orders. They have 3 sizes to pick from - Cutie (serves 1-2; 5inch diameter; $35), Mini (serves 5-6; 6 inch diameter; $50), Small (serves 8-10; 8 inch diameter ; $75). $5 for adding a happy birthday note on the cake if you go and pick up. In summary, if you're in need of a delicious last-minute cake, this bakery seems like the go-to place but go earlier as they run out of cakes very quickly. The stellar service, attractive ambiance, and, most importantly, the heavenly chocolate cake make it worth considering for any celebration. I'm sold and definitely looking forward to ordering from here again!

Yelp
After seeing this cake show up once on my IG feed, I was determined to get one for my wedding. My partner and I spent a majority of our relationship in the city, so the City Skyline cake was a no-brainer when deciding the style. We decided to go for the large, which worked very well as our cake-cutting cake. We chose the lemon Meyer flavor and it was hit. The cake is so flavorful, so moist, and the buttercream melts in your mouth. I went back and ordered it again for my sisters birthday. Butter& has a store front and they make road-side pick up so easy! Highly recommend this place for their cakes for all celebrations. Or even a slice for a week-day pick me up if you're in the city.

Yelp
Beautiful designs and delicious cake. Usually butter cream frosting is too sweet and overpowering for my taste, but Butter&'s cakes have the perfect flavor and sweetness balance! My first time trying Butter& cakes, I tried the brown butter Meyer lemon cake which I loved. For my partners birthday, I purchased the yuzu and lychee cake (seasonal flavor). Also soo good!

Yelp
The highest compliment you can get from my friends and I, is that something is not too sweet. Butter& delivers super cute and delicious cakes. It was hard finding a mini cake in SF on short notice. Although the location is a bit of a drive through the city for me to get to, it was worth it. I called, and was prompted to text the bakery. I wanted to make sure they had cakes readily available to purchase on the spot. I received a prompt response from them, letting me know they had mini cakes ready to be picked up right away. They had several cakes in different sizes available. Since there would be only three of us that night for my friends birthday dinner, I decided to get a cutie size ($35), which would easily feed 6 people (if you cut them on the smaller side). They were able to do their signature gold "happy birthday" on the top, and it only took a few minutes. I opted for their sweet cream + roasted berries flavor, which we all thought was delicious and not too sweet! We loved it and it was the perfect way to end our dinner. I was able to find street parking a few steps away from the store front. It was easy to locate and their open concept bakery was such a vibe. The gentleman in the front who helped me was very nice and friendly. I'd definitely return, when I am in need of a special occasion cake!

Yelp
I've been a customer of butter& for a few years now and just realized I have never reviewed them. When I say they make the best cakes, I mean it. We've tried most of their flavors over the past few years but our favorite has got to be the sweet cream and roasted berries. The buttercream is silky smooth and the cake isn't overly sweet. A close second is either the brown butter and Meyer lemon or the matcha strawberry (which sadly isn't in their regular rotation). Aside from the delicious cakes, their service is top tier. For our wedding a couple of years ago, we of course went with butter& but when we ordered the tasting box, they accidentally forgot the vanilla bean sample and instead doubled up on a different flavor. I emailed them and asked if I could stop by to pick up just a small sample of the missing flavor and when I arrived they gave us a whole vanilla bean cake. I was stunned. I haven't been to their storefront yet but am sure it's fantastic and look forward to going one day. Whether you're looking for just a slice, a birthday cake or a wedding cake, I highly recommend butter&! You will not be disappointed.

Yelp
During the start of the pandemic, Butter& made waves with their quarantine cakes. And, their messages on the cakes: "Wash your hands" and Don't touch your face" made me laugh. Not only was it cute, it's facts. Some people constantly need to be reminded... Case in point: You're washing your hands in a public restroom, when someone exits from the stall, scratches their bum, coughs onto their hands, and then touches the door handle to exit....without washing their hands. Three years later, Butter& has graduated from their commercial kitchen and has moved into a beautiful retail space (formerly Kin Khao) where you can buy cakes by the slice and watch the talented bakers crafting beautiful cakes in the open kitchen. M E N U * Savory Breakfast Cake (Slice - $8 / Whole - $55) * Sweet Cakes (Slice - $12) * Cutie/Mini Cakes ($30-$50) Other cakes available for pre-order. For drinks: Hedge Coffee, Stonemill Matcha + Hōjicha, Guittard Hot Chocolate, etc. ($3.75-$5.75) D R I N K S * Stonemill Hōjicha Au Lait w/ oat milk ($5.75): https://tinyurl.com/yvm3adfa Yay for offering hōjicha! The hōji au lait had a good roasted nutty flavor but my drink was lukewarm. My friend got a hot chocolate and that was also lukewarm. C A K E * Savory Breakfast Cake: Egg, veggie, bacon frittata w/ mashed potato (Slice - $8): https://tinyurl.com/5y4anb5p Each slice of breakfast cake is served with a lit gold candle, a special touch that made me smile. The frittata with bacon, scallions, corn, and mozzarella was savory and eggy, topped with buttery mashed potatoes. Just needed to be warmed up more before serving since it was cold in the center. S E R V I C E Prompt. A M B I A N C E Bright and airy retail space with an open kitchen. No seating inside. There's one table outside with a handful of random chairs and benches at the mini plaza area. When the weather improves, hope they add more tables. P A R K I N G Street and metered parking. Easier on this part of the city. Overall, if you want to cheer someone up...Butter&! Gift them with a mini personalized cake or bring them over for a slice of breakfast cake. Nothing like a lit candle to make someone feel special.

Yelp
See photos for the beautiful clean cake. I ordered: Ridges + Fresh Flowers - Small (8-10 servings) / Brown Butter + Meyer Lemon / Baker's choice; sage color; with added custom gold script. We celebrated my partner's birthday out of town in SF, but the ordering and delivery process was super smooth. I appreciated the extra confirmation and clarification texts after ordering to ensure the cake was properly delivered to the right hotel at the right time. I was able to fly in and still surprise him with the cake at the hotel. I also really appreciated the preview photo they sent beforehand! Besides the service, this is one of the best if not THE best cake I've ever had. Just the perfect amount of tartness to blend with the buttery sweetness of the cake. The frosting and overall cake was not too sweet, but just right. I never eat more than one slice of cake and I had three that night! Even with how much I ate, it definitely serves the 8-10 people still.

Yelp
Update. I ordered a cake for my partner's bday. It wasn't last minute but no one else would have been able to fulfill the order. These people at Butter & made a two tiered work of art for my partner and delivered it to the venue seamlessly with candles and all. People were floored, it was gooooood and it looked gorgeous. I was so pleased. Love love love these people.

Yelp
So glad I got to pop by their new location this past weekend! The new storefront looks amazing. It's so airy in there and their corner location provides plenty of sunlight. I could definitely tell that it was their soft opening though but more on that later. Immediately walking in I'm greeted and they have two sections in the glass displays--one side is for slices and the other side is for whole cakes. I decided to get slices--and tried their hazelnut+chocolate and their black sesame+red bean. 1. Hazelnut + Chocolate: not too sweet, really great textures, no waxy aftertaste on the buttercream, perfect layers, slight hazelnut crunch 2. Black Sesame + Red Bean: their Lunar New Year special, really aromatic black sesame flavor, red bean wasn't quite spread out but more centered in the cake, same great textures and no waxy buttercream aftertaste What stood out to me for both of them was that they leaned into textures which I really appreciate it. The cake is definitely more crumbly than I'm used to but that's not a bad thing. I thought with the buttercream and the other more wet layers in each cake that having a more crumbly cake base helped the structure and ensured that it wasn't soggy. A couple of suggestions as they are slowly ramping up their service: 1) need more tables outside. I think they had plenty of chairs but I only saw maybe 2 tables (or was it 1 now that I think of it)? 2) different sized boxes - I bought two slices of each and I think they could have either just been in two medium sized boxes instead of four mini ones. I also took them to go and it was hard carrying them out. 3) price - I know figuring out a good price point is always an issue especially since you want to make sure there are quality ingredients and your staff and rent gets paid so this is just an observation but at $12 a slice I definitely felt a little queasy. And as delicious as the cakes are I don't foresee myself going frequently. But the most important question is--should you go? Do I recommend Butter&? Yes. I definitely recommend them because their desserts are delicious and unique. If price is an issue, I recommend maybe grabbing a group of 4-5 and splitting a slice of cake. They also sell coffee and as of right now they have one breakfast item.

Yelp
Delicious cakes, with creative flavors. They usually have a seasonal/monthly flavor (my current favorite is their Pistachio/Rose cake). We've been getting birthday (and other celebratory) cakes here since 2021, before they had their storefront. They sell a variety of sizes (to preorder), and also sell by the slice in the store. Be aware, though, that there's nowhere to eat inside, and whether or not there are tables set up outside is hit or miss. Service has always been super friendly, and they seem to genuinely enjoy delighting their customers with tasty cakes.

Cake was amazing! We were in town for a work event and picked this up for a coworker's birthday. The cake tasted great and loved the simple HBD design. Highly recommend!

Yelp
Can't say enough about the ordering experience and product. I ordered a cake to be delivered for a birthday and online ordering was (wait for it) a piece of cake. It was comforting to get confirmations and messages that everything was on schedule since I wanted this to be special and on time for the birthday celebration. We ordered Tonga vanilla and the flavor was delicate and balanced with a light texture and a beautiful buttercream. The pictures are pretty much accurate reflections of the quality and art of Butter& cakes but please note they aren't necessarily exactly showing the flavor combinations of the cake and frosting that is selected from the dropdown on the web order. (I ordered vanilla cake and saw chocolate frosting in the picture and thought I'd get a vanilla cake with chocolate frosting but it turned out I'd ordered "Tonga vanilla" so I got vanilla cake and frosting. Definitely not a deal breaker but just fyi.) Overall this is an exceptional bakery and I'll for sure be returning to order for special occasions in the future!!

Yelp
Summary: Slices with nice texture, but too sweet and greasy Details: I've been following Butter& for a long while, and figured it was finally time to try them now that they were more easily accessible with their brick and mortar shop. Friend and I showed up a few months back to grab a couple slices, and unfortunately, was not particularly wowed by them. The cakes themselves were pretty simple (not a bad thing), with a nice, dense, moist cake texture, and pretty nice, albeit slightly too-sweet flavors. The thing that was a big turnoff was how greasy the buttercream was: as another Yelper put it, it was almost like eating straight up butter. If that's your kind of thing, they're probably worth a try, but I prefer my cakes a tad bit lighter. Accessibility: Pretty open space, and easily accessible! Didn't pay attention to if there were seating options inside, but there's a number of accessible seating options right outside in the common area.

Yelp
I have been following them on instagram for a while and I am so glad to finally try their cakes. Their cakes has a simple yet elegant design suitable for any kind of celebration or even just to indulge once in a while. We got their citrus + brown butter and oh boy - two of us finished the whole cake in one sitting! we just can't get enough it. The cake is moist, has a perfect balance of flavor and the complexity makes each bite a journey from the fragrant to the after taste. Can't wait to try other cakes from them.

Yelp
Ordered a cake for my mom's birthday! I've been following them on instagram for a while and loved the elegant design of their cakes. Although pricey, it's nice to splurge on something nice every now and then. I preordered online and set a date and time to pick up the cake. They text you with reminders and will bring it out to you in the front of the store - there's no real storefront and they don't do walk-ins. There's decent parking around and is a few blocks away from the main shops of Dogpatch. I ordered their vanilla bean cake and the butter creme is so GOOD! Flavorful, dense, and sweet without leaving a film in your mouth. The cake is spongey and moist. They even included a cute candle!

Yelp
A Butter& matcha and strawberry cake was the gorgeous centerpiece of our wedding dessert table spread! We chose the Marble Kintsugi for its sophisticated design that still had a touch of whimsy. We also loved how the theme tied in with our honeymoon that was supposed to be in Japan (no thanks to COVID cancellations). The cake itself was moist with perfectly even layers, smooth buttercream, good flavor, and wasn't overly sweet. We initially picked up the cake tasting box to help us select our final flavor, which was a fun experience and all the cake slices were tasty and fresh. Highly recommend that if you're looking for a wedding cake. We look forward to ordering a little cake in the future to celebrate our anniversary! Communication was timely and clear during the ordering and pick up process and all the staff were friendly and easy to work with. I follow the bakery on Instagram and really appreciate how they strive to provide livable wages and a supportive atmosphere for their staff. This ties into cake prices that may seem expensive, but I don't find them unreasonable for the quality and if you're ordering for a special occasion. Definitely keep them in mind if you want a modern, beautiful, and delicious cake for your next event!

Yelp
I went all out and ordered three HBD cakes : Expose-Birthday mini :9th and Larkin Chocolate, Expose-The Journey mini: Sweet Cream & Roasted Berries and Expose-Floral mini: Brown butter & Meyer lemon , all gluten-free and decorated spectacularly well, they were beautiful! Easy online ordering process and delivery was prompt. It was delivered with extra care for sure and packaged extremely well which I truly appreciated. Clear instructions on how to take care of your cake. Our favorites were: Sweet Cream & Roasted Berries and the Brown Butter & Meyer lemon. Chocolate was just ok for us.

Yelp
An update to my last review. After noting that the hazelnut cake was too sweet for my partner and I, the butter& team reached out shortly after and immediately tried to make things better. Really appreciate their great customer service! I went to their store this time to pick up my order and everything was very smooth. We decided to try the brown sugar Meyer lemon this time and definitely enjoyed it more than our last experience. Overall, gotta applaud the butter& team for going above & beyond for their customers!

Yelp
My husband ordered a surprise birthday cake for me from Butter & and we drove 35 miles to bring it home. The cake was every bit a beauty as it was delicious. It was art and a very beautifully crafted one at that. Every layer was set perfectly, the tart passion fruit filling between each layer perfectly intact upon arrival. The chocolate and passion fruit went very well together and the overall pairing was amazing. The instructions on how to handle the cake and at what temperatures was very precise and you must follow those if you don't want your cake to go dry. The cake was picked up curb side and one of their employees came to deliver the cake to our car. The box was very sturdy and the black ribbon utterly cute and looked very handsome! I'm someone who values packaging and they won me over right there with the box looking like that. Their chocolate is superior. It's not your average chocolate so don't expect the cake to be overly sweet. Mine was perfectly balanced with the tartness of the passionfruit filling, the creaminess and the chocolaty-ness of their handmade chocolate along with the handmade sponge. The sponge did not taste overly eggy or buttery and that's why we loved it. My birthday cake this year was a hit and the happy birthday written on it was a work of precision. I loved their professionalism and would highly recommend Butter &.

Yelp
What can I say but, "best cake ever"? :) We've had the berry, hazelnut, and vanilla flavors so far and they have always been amazing. The designs are super cool, the tall skyline design and the exposé are both striking designs that lent quite a bit of class and "wow" to our parties. Cake aside what set Butter& apart for me was the service. Pleasant and easy to work with - can't wait to stop by their Brick and Mortar location.

Yelp
tl;dr - Takes same day and 1-day orders on a select number or cakes, so YAY for procrastinators! Amazing customer service. Easy text communication. Pickup was a breeze. Smaller range of flavors. I highly recommend the hazelnut + chocolate which has hazelnut chunks. Crumblier cake - might not be for those who prefer super moist cake, but the soft, whipped buttercream pairs well. Follow their instructions on storage/refrigeration (see the card that comes with the cake). Left mine out for 5+ hours and it was a little melty but still delicious! If you're a procrastinator like me, then this is the bakery for you! This was my 2nd time ordering a birthday cake at the last minute from Butter&, and everything was a breeze. Party planning is stressful, so thank you Amanda and team (especially Kevin with the kind, quick text communication) for making our lives easier! While some of their fancier/larger cakes require placing an order 3+ days in advance, they have a special selection of simpler but elegant and modern Exposé (exposed) cakes of various sizes available for order 1+ days in advance. You can even get a custom script (usually up to 20 characters). Early this month (October 2022), they announced that they can even do same-day (2 hours) pickup and delivery of their most popular flavor, Sweet Cream + Roasted Berries! I haven't tried this one yet but I've heard it's amazing. Just look for the "Available Today" option. They have a smaller selection of flavors, but each flavor has been carefully crafted with the finest ingredients. If you're on their email listserv, they'll let you know when they have limited edition flavors as well. Also, they don't spam you with emails, so don't hesitate to sign up! Ordering was easy and straightforward on their website. There's an option to message Gabrielle or someone from the team directly through the website if you have questions during business hours. Once you place your order, you'll receive a text message confirmation. You can text them anytime at this number with questions or concerns, and they'll respond very quickly (during business hours). For example, I was running late for my pickup, and had no problems shooting them a text and adjusting the pickup window. When I arrived on a Saturday morning, I parked in the white loading zone out front, then texted them that I was downstairs. Someone came out within a minute. Very friendly guy. FYI - there's a cute little grocery store right next door if you need to grab other things. Butter& doesn't have a storefront (yet), but for a small business, this is totally understandable. I find it unfair that people have knocked off stars for this. They mentioned they are working towards opening up a storefront someday! They offer nine different cake sizes ranging from "cutie (1-2 servings) to large two tier cakes (50-60 servings). If you need a last minute wedding cake, this might be your bakery as well! This was my 2nd time ordering a "Mini" Exposé cake in the flavor hazelnut + chocolate w/ 72% cacao chocolate ganache with hazelnut praline buttercream and toasted hazelnuts. The "Mini" serves 3-4, but unless you're used to big hunking pieces of cake, this could easily feed 5-6. It's packaged beautifully in a white box with black ribbon, instructions for handling and storing your cake, and an optional gift note. **Note: any reviewers complaining that the buttercream was too hard probably did not follow the instructions. Yes, butter hardens in the fridge, and so will buttercream. So it takes some time to soften up.** We left ours out for 5 hours and it was a little melty, but still delicious. The ganache and buttercream is to die for. If you like very moist cake, this might not be the cake for you. It is a little more crumbly, but I find that this pairs well with their extra soft, whipped buttercream. Flavors were on point. The chunks of hazelnut add texture. And of course, the cake itself is gorgeous. Not to mention, it comes with 1 gold candle! Yes, it's a little pricey, but when you take into account the fact that we're in SF, inflation, and Butter&'s efforts to cover sustainable pay and benefits for their employees in a small business, it makes sense. So give it a try!

Yelp
Butter& makes delicious and beautiful cakes. I've bought their whole cakes for two different gatherings by going in-store and both times they were perfect. The cakes are gorgeously designed and taste "not too sweet" in the best way possible. I recently bought the Meyer lemon/brown butter mini for a Christmas dinner and the cake got my boyfriend's mother's stamp of approval (which always makes me feel good ). She even asked for seconds which she never does with sweets! I love that the b&m location is just a few blocks away from me in the Dogpatch neighborhood. I see myself buying more cakes from them in the future. The only thing that ever gives me pause is their in-store experience doesn't feel customer-focused if you're walking in off the street. They have a beautifully elegant store but when I've walked in both times, there is a girl sitting at a desk off to the right who looks up and sees me but doesn't say hello. She turns her head back with no acknowledgment. Maybe she doesn't work on the front facing customer team but we're there in the room together when I walk in so it's just a bit uncomfortable, like I'm not supposed to be there. Someone else does eventually come out from the back and they are very helpful but the initial interaction just feels a bit off. Also, they sell individual sized pieces of cake and coffee (which is really good btw, the drip coffee from hedge is smooth and nice) but they do not have indoor chairs and tables for guests. They have one indoor bench which signals (maybe I'm misunderstanding but this is how it makes me feel), "we want you to buy from us, but we don't want you to stay in our space". When I was waiting for my cake to be wrapped, I waited on the bench and another customer had ordered after me and started awkwardly eating the cake standing up. So I got up from the bench so she could at least sit while eating. Again, it just doesn't feel like a customer-focused space. Perhaps Butter& is a business that optimizes for online or special orders, which I totally understand. But they have this beautiful b&m store that could be warmed up just a tad by having staff who greet customers as they walk in and also one table inside for customers to sit properly to enjoy their beautiful cakes.

Yelp
Butter& designed a beautiful cake for our wedding. They were very thoughtful, asking questions to ensure our cake met our needs and expectations. The final result was nothing less than wonderful. Thank you!

Yelp
Absolutely delicious! We got the burnt butter & Meyer lemon cake for my grandmother and mother for Mother's Day, and it was a hit. The cake was perfectly tart and not too sweet. Highly recommend!

Yelp
This is the easiest 5 star review I have given. Butter& is hands down the BEST cake you can get in the Bay Area!!! Not only are their cakes delectable, but the ordering and pick up process is so seamless. I ordered online and opted for pickup at their Dogpatch location. Upon arrival, you just text them to let them know you've arrived and they will come down and bring you your cake! I've tried multiple of their cakes, but most recently I got a cutie size of the brown butter + Meyer lemon flavor. the cutie size claims to serve 1-2 people, but it could easily serve 4 people! The texture of the cake is perfect and paired amazingly with the buttercream frosting and lemon flavoring. Seriously 10/10!!!
