Love Love LOVE this shop!! I have been going here for years, since I lived in Missoula and now even though I live out of state I find excuses to come to Missoula so I can restock on my favorite herbs and teas. This store also has amazing candies, soaps, perfumes and so much more, as well as a wonderful cash only cafe in the back. The prices and quality on the teas are simply unbeatable. I am and will continue to be a lifelong customer!

Got the espresso shake a couple of times and man, was it good. Highly recommend something from the cash only-espresso bar. It's also just such a unique little place and smells amazing. Love the vibe. They have a ton of cute pottery for sale as well. Had I any room in my suitcase, I would have grabbed some.

I love how fresh the coffee beans are. They were recently doing renovations of the coffee bar so unfortunately that was closed but they have a great selection of spices, teas, coffee, and local crafts for sale. Very unique spot.

Cute & cozy coffee shop and much much more - they have so many cute things from tea/coffee products to art works, books, jewelry and much more. This place feels magical.

This place has such a great vibe! It's an old pharmacy, the front of which is now herbs and coffees, household tools and decor items. At the back of the store there's an old soda fountain. You order, and must pay cash only, at the register. You can sit either in a booth or at the stools along the counter, to wait for your ice cream treats or coffee or baked goods or sandwiches. I can vouch for how wonderful their coffee ice cream soda is, and my son and I both were delighted with our toasted cheese sandwiches with veggies on ciabatta rolls.

Love the cafe here! Great place to go when you are looking for a quiet spot for breakfast, lunch, or simply a nice cup of coffee (the baristas make amazing lattes!). The Butterfly Club is delicious and don’t leave without trying a slice of their Huckleberry Coffeecake. They also sell bulk spices, loose leaf tea, and artwork from local artists.

yeah this place rocksss . i got to smell a bunch of perfume oils and they were so affordable . i got the rose tea scent under my right pointer fingernail and it lingered most of the day and smelled so good. nice vibe and stuff.

This adorable shop was recommended to me as the best place in town to get a sandwich from the desk at my hotel. The sandwich was awesome. I loved it so much I had to come back for their banana bread before I left town. The staff is friendly. The gift shop is full of great finds with a variety options. I even made some new local friends while sitting at the bar in the cafe. I'll definitely be back next time I'm in Missoula.

Got a big scoop of ice cream and it's only around $4. Highly recommended to go. There are a lot of teas and perfume and oils to purchase with very affordable price

Cool place for excellent or rare teas. The people are kind and the only down side is pricing on the "things other than teas," it's ridiculous. But, if you want tea in bulk or maybe a sample.. it's perfect for you. I've never eaten in the restaurant side, so I cannot comment on that. But tons of cute things to look at and purchase, we often buy our scented oils there. They have a plethora of them. Super cool.

This was a really cute coffee/apothecary(?) shop we stopped at for some hot drinks. My husband and I split a chai latte (a little on the sweet side for me - I like it more spicy), and my parents got hot cider. Both tasty on a cold day. The atmosphere was cool - in the back was the cafe where we got our drinks, and we had to walk through the front of the shop which had a bunch of spices, herbs, teas etc in jars. There was also a bunch of different chocolate candies in jars. Would stop by here for another drink or to get some spices.

One of my favorite shops when I'm visiting Missoula. Staff is always friendly and welcoming.

I've been going to butterfly herb since high school and I'm 53 now! I recommend Evening in Missoula and Montana Gold, Purple Mounain Majesty and all the other herbal teas & black!

A cute shop with a restaurant in the back. I stopped by the shop to see the teas and spices, I didn't realize they had a restaurant too. The front part of the store has teas, spices, and lots of trinkets to browse. The back half of the shop is a restaurant. I had the pastrami and provolone sandwich and the soup of the day. The food was delicious and very reasonably priced. They don't take credit cards in the back of the store which I didn't realize, but they do have an ATM. They have a few booths and some seats at the bar, so you might have to wait to get a spot. The service at the restaurant wasn't great, but overall I really enjoyed this spot.

Store has tons of stuff, funny birthday cards, candies. Gift items, wide varieties of herbs, teas, coffee beans. At the end of the isle, there is a cafe with coffees, sandwiches, baked goods and milk shakes. We got the coffee milk shake, it was very good. Will be back for lunch soon. By the way, other reviewers commented on the lighting of the place while I find it fine, not "dark" to me.

Such a great atmosphere and place to be. Love the options for tea and the knowledge of the staff, very much a come and enjoy and relax type of place. Being from out of town I will definitely be making some mail orders! Thank you for everyone being so nice and friendly.

This place is so cool I wish I lived here to go there more frequently. They have all sorts of bulk, herbs, and spices and teas so you can bring your own container to refill. Cute coffee shop in the back but I just got their brewed drip but they also have bulk specialty coffees. Super duper neat and cool staff too! Molly C at the front is simply the best!

The coolest place in Missoula. There's an apothecary/bulk herb up front that also sells novelty/gift type items alongside pharmaceuticals. The back has a super cool coffee bar with pastries and ice cream. The art on the wall and through the store are amazing. The patrons are also a cool crowd.

I love this place they make the best sandwiches from scratch fresh in front of you, and they have such an amazing selection of teas to choose from. Prices are extremely fair. The staff is so friendly, and the place has a warm welcoming environment to it.

Remember when Butterfly anticipated trends? Avoided trends?? Bought real stuff created by real people? ***Remember when you were maybe 25 or 35 (or even 45 !) and could see in the dark?*** A wise man referred to the last-decade Rockin' Rudy's as: "Walmart for Hippies". Thus, Butterfly Herbs would be: "Gluten-free Walmart for Hippies". But dark. (*At least at "Bruce's Boutique" you can see the "Made-by-Chinese-Children" label.) Butterfly seems to subsist on low rent and lower expectations. (***And an even lower lighting bill.) Scott has been phoning it in for well over a decade. (Ketamine therapy? Consultation with retirement expert?) Who the halcyon knows! I just know it's dark.....and that sensitive little espresso cup was machine-made in 2001. Dark. Pray the landlord raises the rent and something less dilatant, something less nebulous, something REAL (Starbucks?) comes to town. Wouldn't you sooner be blindsided by blatant commercialism than hood winked into patronizing an ersatz-hippie joint where the herbs are bored and the owner can't find a single local jeweler to light up Dracula's Cave? Wear a miner's light. Go to the other alternative mini mart. Or not. Whatever. It's all good.

They've been around 40+ years and have never disappointed with their jarred spices or fresh coffee/tea drinks and kind service. Keep on rocking on my favorite place on Higgins.

Such a fun place to stop! They had a wonderful assortment of teas and local products. I can't wait to use my cucumber hand cream. We stopped for lunch and had AMAZING huckleberry milkshakes. I took a star off because the staff in the restaurant portion were very rude. It really rubbed me the wrong way how the shit talked customers that had just left.

Neat items offered and fun decor. They only take cash, but there is an ATM which charges a $1.50 fee on top of bank fees.

This place is dusty and super dark, not ambient dark, but like they don't want you to see the dust caked in every corner. In a time where we are learning more and more people are parasitic, you'd think that everyone working here has parasites. People here smell unclean. It's not cute. It's not aesthetic. Awesome shop on the main drag of downtown Missoula and one not to be missed! It's a great combo of boutique type of shop with a cafe in the back. We took advantage of both in getting some great loose leaf tea and whole coffee beans up front; and a tasty lunch in the back. They offer each of their sandwiches on gluten free bread (perfect for us under doctor's orders). The ingredients were super fresh and were able to see the food prepared and knew it was made to order. The meats on the sandwich were quality and lean, while the fresh veg/lettuce was crisp and refreshing. Friendly and knowledgeable staff make this a must do when visiting Missoula. One note, the cafe doesn't accept cards. So you'll need to bring cash or use their ATM. The front part of the shop does accept credit/debit though.

Love this place. Everything is quality. Best coffee in Missoula too. Great place to pick up a little gift. And ask about their herbs for whatever ails ya.

Just Wow. Was this one of those most beautiful stores I've set foot in? Yes it was. Butterfly Herbs is both comforting and completely kitsch/unique at the same time. They have a wide variety of small gifts, local beans, whimsical teas, and a separate restaurant area in the back. This place transports you back in time a bit to the homeliness of a well decorated home plus some art deco personality. If I lived in the area I could sit here all day, but sadly I was passing by as a tourist. I'll be back....someday! Made out with a pack of mints in the meanwhile.

My FAVORITE store in Missoula. Love having access to bulk teas, herbs, and spices. They always have beautiful things to look at and you can have any tea on their wall brewed.

They were so helpful and friendly!!! You can't beat their variety - they have so many different variations and types of herbs you couldn't have possibly imagined. The two people at the front were kind and sweet and made it a welcoming experience. Forget buying spices at the store - save money, buy local and be amazed!

They are wonderful here at the store and coffee shop- so friendly, and the merchandise is unique and well-curated. Amazing spice selection.

I adore everything about this place. This to me is Missoula. It embodies all the good about our town. I love that it isn't modern, it is a little behind the times. They prefer cash. They are attentive and love to recommend products. I always leave Butterfly Herbs feeling happy. The cafe is so quaint, I love the sparkling coffee/ice cream. I love the tea blends they offer and the selection of gifts and natural fragrances.

Lots of options for tea and spices, but the service was lacking a bit. I felt like my need to purchase some tea was annoying to the cashier. Lots of tea options made in house which will make great gifts!

I accidentally found this store while looking for another business. They have nice soaps, locally made candles, and loads of loose teas and spices. The tea is affordable and there are tons of spices available that you might not be able to find otherwise. Very cool that stores like this are in Missoula.

The Herbalist jn me felt like a kid in a candy store here! A great selection of herbal teas and coffees. Will be back.. everytime Im in town!

The only downside to this place is that their coffee and tea bar is cash only, but they also accept EBT cards and have an ATM right there, which is amazing. Their jasmine tea is definitely my favorite, but they have a large selection of tea at their tea bar and an even larger selection of dry tea. I highly recommend their dried rose tea-it's delicious and floral. I also like that you can buy the dry tea by the pound. Definitely the best place in town to buy tea in bulk.

What a cool place. We came here for coffee and ended up having a delicious breakfast. The coffee here is so much better that Starbucks. Wish we had a place like this near home.

Probably some of the best coffee drinks downtown and a great atmosphere to study or catch up with friends or drink coffee at the counter solo. It's cozy and the staff is friendly and it's a place you feel comfortable sitting and having a read and enjoying you're coffee or tea. Prices are very reasonable too, even a couple bucks less than some other downtown coffee spots. The shop is great too they have a great selection of unique gifts and greeting cards and tea and it's a great place to stop to grab a coffee and a quick gift for yourself or someone else. I always find something I can't live without!

I believe this place... is a phenomenon! Excellent, cute little gift shop in an old drugstore with cafe in back. Best veggie/cheese sandwich I've had in a very long time, with fresh bread from around the corner, and most things local. Nice coffee too! Cool French language world maps on the tables to keep you buys. Top Notch!!!

Very nice place to get your spices and herbs and drinks. I had their ice coffee which was amazing. very comfortable and laid back atmosphere. If you are ever in Missoula, stop by and hopefully do more than just take a look.

Beautiful store and amazing Chai. My husband said it was the best Chai he's had and he's pretty picky (he got a dirty iced chai). I personally loved the drip coffee. The mini cupcakes were DELISH. We came here multiple times on our short, three day trip to Missoula. A fav spot for sure. Stocked up on candles, funky postcards, herbs, and oils!

I love Missoula. This shop encapsulates the feel I get when I come and visit. The owner was warm, helpful, welcoming and made me feel like I was at my Grandma's house. The collection of spices and herbs is vast. The tea collection is also very impressive.

When I lived in the zoo I used to like to come in early and get a latte and just relax. I really like this place and the coffee is good as well. So many spices, coffees and teas to choose from. Hit it up you won't be disappointed.

One of the coolest places to go in Missoula, especially if you love tea. The ambiance has a hippy feel to it at the back dining area with great people and great service. I buy all my teas here, but my absolute favorite is Earl Grey Red Flower with Saffron and Bergamot Oil. The knick-knacks they sell are all very cool, this should definately be on your list of stops if your here in Missoula.

This crowded tea and herb shop in downtown Missoula doesn't have much seating, but if you're lucky enough to snag a seat, I would highly recommend it! Butterfly has a great tea selection. If you have time, find your favorite tea to enjoy with a monster cookie for your break mid-day. This is definitely a place to stop for tea lovers visiting Missoula.

Love the bulk apothecary here. I get all my herbs for tinctures here and they have a wicked chocolate milkshake to boot!

I pooped in looking for an herb concoction to use in our sauna. both people at the counter had their opinions about what i should use. One suggested oils and the other suggested a few herbs. Unfortunately, the herb I most wanted was sold out. Anyway, the place is very cool with a cafe in the back. Really sweet place to check out even if you're not looking for herbs or soaps.

While some places in downtown Missoula are hipper, cooler, or more raw, BH is by far the cutest shop on Higgins. From the fancy and creative display windows to the old style pressed-tin ceiling to the wall of herbs and loose teas stored in glass jars, to the smaller items for sale in front and the bistro espresso bar in back: you'll find yourself oooinhg and awwing a lot around here. Not Hello Kitty cute, mind you: cute in an aromatherapy, herbes de provence, lapsang souchang sort of way. Cute in an urban hippie crossed with Montana home remedy kind of way. Many of the teas are from Montana Tea and Spice, including such awesome blends as Montana Gold, Wintermist, Wild West, Night on Glacier Bay, and Evening in Missoula. The green teas are excellent - organic hairpoint, for example - and there are some great things for do-it-yourself potpourri, if you are into that sort of thing. All of which is a little weird, I realize. But weird is what Missoula is all about.

It's an impressive thing to see honest businesses that can not only survive for more than three decades, but also weather various cultural changes. Way back in the 80's, Butterfly Herbs was a place that my friends, myself, and most of Missoula's misfits used as a meeting ground, community hall, and daily gathering place. This was at a time, that in an effort to attract new customers, they offered a bottomless cup of coffee for a buck- A godsend for unemployed punks living on the dole. No doubt that while the employees found us amusing (especially when we would bring in our cassette tapes) the owners found us... annoying. But in any case, it was an excellent place for the freaks and misfits of Missoula to congregate, socialize, and generally keep warm while the Montanan winter wore on outside, not to mention installing a chronic case of caffeine shakes. Since then, not much has changed. The bottomless coffee deal comes and goes. But more importantly, the atmosphere is still just as warm and inviting as the day the business first opened its doors to the public, perhaps even more so. First and foremost with this establishment is, as the name obviously indicates, the herbs. Two-plus walls are filled with the most commonly used to the extremely rare. The staff is quite knowledgeable in their use and applications. Everything from a simple cup of herbal tea, to battling fatigue at ultra-high elevations and everything in between- they should be able to set you up, or at the very least check their reference books. As you traverse to the rear of the store, you will encounter the coffee bar. Everything here is what Starbucks was, and still attempts to be. As previously noted, three decades of Missoula's artists, creative types, scenesters, hipsters, malcontents, and misfits have congregated here to eat drink, and exchange thought-wave patterns of all sorts, all at a low price, and always with room for everyone. So, if you find yourself trapped in Missoula on a cold winter's afternoon (or any time of year, for that matter), stop in. Get yourself a sandwich, a cup of coffee, and let your imagination flow. Strike up a conversation or two. Quite possibly you'll find yourself never wanting to leave.

First off--let me say I have a serious love/hate relationship with "the Butterfly." They are my go-to store for anything herbal--their bulk spices are extensive and priced well, and it's one of the only places to get exotic hot peppers in Missoula. Their bulk tea selection and prices are great (and the cheapest in town), but they admittedly, have a lot more competition in that department. Great coffee selection, all stored in bean form and fresh-ground in-house if you like (also, the cheapest in town). But yeah, a lot of the staff come across as elitist hippies. I needed help with a medicinal component of a tea and the clerk looked at me like I was an alien from planet "Idiot." At some point I should learn to "eyeball" weights of different herbs to make my transactions here easier--but in the meantime it'd be awesome if someone would just fill up a bag for me until it looks right, without the third degree. The bistro in back is cute, but small and always crowded. The drip coffee is pretty damn good, but their sandwiches are almost $5 and not worth your trouble. All their beauty products and gifts are marked up all to hell, but fun to look at. I'm sure you'll laugh after all my belly-aching, but it's still where I bring friends who are new to Missoula. Lots of shiny things, good smells, and downtown where the action is.

Such an amazing place, right in the heart of downtown Missoula. They literally carry everything a boutique would in the front - so assorted lotions/creams/soaps/essential oils - in addition to loose-leaf tea, spices, and coffee. The customer service here was amazing. While I was browsing the coffee bean section, the cashier took the time to allow me to not only smell each roast, but also to help me ana the aromatic notes every time I liked something. I really appreciated this, and wound up finding some delicious coffee!

I was impressed with the selection of teas, pack or bulk, I chose the bulk you get more for less, everything marked and priced for self service. The staff was helpful, knowledgeable and experienced. Did not have opportunity to experience the food or shakes next time. There were creams, oils and scarves, but did not have opportunity to really see them not enough timeoverall you need more time to experience this store
