Buttermilk Bake Shop

One of our patients bought us two cakes from Buttermilk Bake Shop located in downtown Petersburg Va. I must say if you are in need of a Delicious moist cake you must go there. We had the Chocolate ganache and the hummingbird cake. It was sooooo good. They can both feed a lot of people because you don’t need a big slice to satisfy your sweet tooth. It’s rich in flavor and worth the trip to the bake shop. When you go tell them DJ sent you. 🦋

Really friendly service and great-tasting donuts! They weren’t quite as fluffy as some other spots I’ve been to, but still delicious and fresh—it didn’t take away from the experience at all. They also have a nice selection of other goodies like cakes and pastries. Worth a visit if you’re in the area!

Petersburg is growing fast! My daughter introduced me to this sweet tooth shop. All I can say is delicious and beyond..... I will definitely be returning for these cupcakes. They have multiple flavors of cupcakes, donuts and ice cream bars.

My husband and I love this bake shop! The Apple fritters are his favorite! I love their donuts! It reminds me of an Amish bakery back home! The cheesecake is phenomenal too!!

This is a hidden 💎. We have passed it so many times because the Coca-Cola sign is eye catching. But this time we saw it and went in for a pleasant surprise. They offer sweets for vegans, gluten-free, and everyone else 🤣😂. My son had a vanilla donut and said it melted in his mouth. I had the chocolate flourless cupcake and it was sooo good. I’m glad we got it to go and I ate in when I got home. Because I would have bought some more. If you’re in the Richmond area and looking for a sweet treat stop here.

THE best baked goodies in the area. Melt-in-your mouth, delectably sweet donuts and baked-to-perfection cakes and cupcakes. I’ve tried other local bakeries, to include places like Honey Bee, but Buttermilk far exceeds other local bakeries in both presentation and flavor! Plus, their customer service is top-notch and you can actually expect your cakes on time and at a better price.

The best donuts in town we got an assorted box for our company meeting at Air Force One Hvac controls. My bosses got a cinnamon bun, which he said it was the best cinnamon bun he’s ever had and my other boss got the Apple fritter! 10 out of 10!!

If your near Petersburg, you have to stop in for some fresh baked donuts or other deliciously sweet items. The staff was helpful picking out 2 dozen sweet treats for my team, which they enjoyed tremendously!

Lovely baked goods. We had a delish chocolate cupcake, donuts and coffee. They have really nice stuff and I wish we could've gotten more but this was a quick stop on the way to Maine. Make sure you stop it's great.

I can not say enough positive things about Buttermilk Bake Shop. I absolutely adore this small bakery. When you walk inside you are instantly greeted by the beautiful array of baked goods that include donuts, cupcakes, cakes, mini cheesecakes and even cookies! Oh and did I mention they also have vegan and gluten free options?! The staff is always so kind and friendly. The offerings, especially the cupcakes, are usually rotating flavors. My favorite is the cookies and cream cupcake. I am not sure what they put in their buttercream but it is addictive. My only "complaint" about this place is that I can't buy their buttercream frosting by the tub. The amount of times I've craved their cookies and cream frosting is infinite. Give Buttermilk Bake Shop a try and pick out anything that looks good promise you won't be disappointed!!

I stopped in this morning to get donuts for my customer and some apple fritters. Johnny was working behind the counter and was super helpful. We enjoyed the food so much that I ended up going back after I left the customers location and getting a few more items for myself. I love the maple bacon donuts And the little lemon pie.

The place is very clean and welcoming. They do have some gluten free options, but it was pretty sparse when I went in (just a chocolate muffin). Staff were friendly and they were making fresh pastries that looked amazing (not gluten free though ) We got our order super fast and they were really helpful. They had tshirts, mugs and stickers (I'm a sucker for merch)

I love this place me and my dad visited this spot every other week up til he passed now I just come here alone the staff is always friendly and I highly recommend this spot 10 out of 10

I have yet to walk in here and leave empty handed and of all the things I have tried, none disappoint. Even if they are running low they still have at least a few worthwhile goodies to choose from in the display case. The employees are unfailingly kind. And that display case will beckon you as young walk in, luring you over, with promises of taste bud heaven. HA! Seriously, I really enjoy coming here and it's my go-to for special occasions a d party treats.

Clean and friendly service. Verity of delicious looking baked goods. However disappointed that the items I got were stale on Sunday morning. Tasted like day old stale bread.

Buttermilk provided a dessert bar and cake for our recent wedding and Everything was to die for! We had a hummingbird cake, cupcakes, and donuts and everything was fresh and delicious. Many wedding guests asked me where the desserts came from and they all raved about how wonderful they were! I highly recommend this bakery for weddings or just daily treats! They are awesome and very accommodating!

I went here because I saw they have vegan cupcakes and my baby is allergic to dairy but I wanted to get him a sweet treat for his first birthday! The store was cute and smelled yummy. I got three vegan cupcakes, two regular red velvet cupcakes and a mini cheesecake. Everything was so delicious! The service was nice and I would love to go back and try their other flavors and desserts.

The interior of this bakery is absolutely adorable! I recently placed a big order for a friendsgiving brunch and the treats were a hit! The hummingbird cake was absolutely divine; it's my absolute favorite treat.

FANTASTIC! A friend of mine lives in the area and told me about this bake shop. Of course I added it to my Yelp collection so I can remember to go to it. Well 2 days after she told me about it I was back up in Petersburg on a Sunday and they were OPEN! They provide the dough for the pizza crust at Trapezium just down the street so I was pumped to try some sweets. I had a red velvet cupcake, a cooked n cream cupcake, glazed donut, chocolate iced donut, vegan peanut butter cookie and a wedding cookie. ALL of it and I mean all of it was fantastic! My favorite was the wedding cookie. It just melted in my mouth and had the amount of powdered sugar. The service was great! They were all so kind and helpful when it came to choosing the perfect sweet. They are totally worth the 80 minute drive from Poquoson!

Came into the shop on a Saturday morning about 10 am. The shop was quite busy, as I expected it would be. I was quickly waited upon. There were many great pastry options, including vegan. I loved that some of the pastries also had fresh fruit. The shop was clean and very welcoming with really cute decorations. I would return and recommend.

Came here again today for an apple fritter (they are the best apple fritters I've ever had in my entire life hands down). Also grabbed a few brownies regular and vegan. The man was so nice and was talking to us about what he knew was in the vegan brownies. I still prefer the regular ones but for a vegan brownie it was the best I've ever had. They have amazing doughnuts, cakes, cupcakes ect as well. And delicious homemade dog treats even my super picky dog will eat. Cannot speak highly enough about this place if you want a sweet treat come here!

BIG fan of Buttermilk Bake Shop, have been visiting for years! I buy small freshly baked items for clients and prospects when working in the area - these are always appreciated! fantastic service - always, and dependably superior fresh baked cookies, cupcakes, and donuts! The best donuts you will ever eat. They're always fresh and the staff is always very kind. The shop if very cute inside! Very accessible from the main road so it can be a quick detour

We got 4 things here. Oreo cupcake, coconut checkered pie, turtle cheesecake, and carrot cake cupcake. I'm not a huge cupcake person, but these were good. The carrot cake one was our favorite and I think it was because the frosting was the best. The only thing we didn't like was the coconut pie. It had a weird pudding flavor that didn't go with the coconut.

Great donuts, but clean up the dining area. Customers would love to have a place to sit and may even stay longer if your seating area was clear of boxes. The overall ambiance lacks because of the unkept seating area.

We have gone multiple times over the past 6 months and it has never been a disappointment. From the taste of the pastries or the hot and tasteful coffee. We enjoy stopping by and with new hours it is even nicer.

Hands down! The Buttermilk Bake Shop is the Rock Star of Virginia bakeries! So many incredible selections for those that love decadent sweets! I decided to get a few dozen cupcakes to share with my friends in Richmond after a debate about a Richmond area bakery's red velvet cupcakes. I knew that once they tasted Buttermilk's red velvet cupcakes that they would be hooked! Not only was I right! But they loved several other flavors! If you haven't tried Buttermilk's, pop in and order your all time favorite flavor! You'll be hooked! The owner has magic hands! She's whipping up the best deserts that this area has ever had! I am literally salivating as I type just thinking about the bakery;) Hey! All my RVA folks! Hop on 95 South and check it out! Five minutes off the exit and you're there!

Ok, I love bakeries. If there's ever a passable confectionery en route to wherever I'm going, I'm game to give it a go. We were en route down to North Carolina and targeted a nearby BBQ spot for lunch, and as luck would have it, the stars aligned and we innocently walked into Buttermilk Bake Shop, not knowing we were about to have the best slice of cake I've ever had. The hummingbird cake. It was truly perfect. The exact right level of sweetness, unbelievably fresh, perfectly frosted...in a word, heavenly. It was also a very generous slice and it, plus two perfectly pillowy chocolate donuts, made our entire happy car smile with delight the rest of the way South. This is it. This is the place you really must go to if you are in the vicinity of Richmond, if you need a stop off of 95, if you love baked goods. Staff couldn't have been nicer to boot. We will be making a stop on the way back North to buy a whole darn cake to take with us. You should too.

This sweet little bakery serves up melt in your mouth Donuts and sweet treats. The variety is limited but they manage to cover all the bases with what they offer. I had a donut and it melted into my mouth! It was gone in a flash! I really enjoyed my visit and look forward to trying other items in the future.

If you love love love Boston Cream Donuts...this is your place. Freshly squeezed custard into a jumbo donut covered in delectable chocolate, better than anything around! Run, don't walk.

We found this place a few years ago and now it's a must when traveling in the area or headed south. Super easy access off of 95 and fast service for gourmet baked. Very cool place to unwind and enjoy a donut or pastry with friends and family. I am yet to be disappointed by the assortment of donuts and pastries and my family always enjoys their cookies and cupcakes. Definitely worth a stop!

The cake was pretty good. It was rich and really sweet. We got doughnuts too but they didn't make it to the pictures. The strawberry doughnut was sooo good! Didn't care for the original glazed. Maybe too much cinnamon or nutmeg.... not sure which one but just too much for me. Cheesecake was delicious. The place was very clean. But i just feel like when you tell the person at the front, this is my first time here, they could be a little more welcoming. I may or may not return just based on customer service alone. It was a younger lady who seemed to be in her 20s who came from the back and spoke and was very nice but she went back into the kitchen area and we were left with the heavyset guy who just seemed to not smile or be happy that we were asking questions.

Banana cream donuts that they fill when you order them, monstrous cinnamon buns with candied pecans, huge cinnamon rolls with amazing cream cheese frosting, and a frosted and fantastic apple fritter, all I can say is that I would be in extreme caloric trouble if I lived anywhere near the BBS. They even have vegan peanut butter, oatmeal, and chocolate chip for people who are so inclined in enjoying a plant based diet. This bakery has far too many delicious temptations for one who has lost his grip on his intake of deliciousness and his waistline.

Super cute and sweet place! Tried the PB, oatmeal, and chocolate chip vegan cookies- so delish! My husband devoured this donut sandwich- no complaints whatsoever. The place was super clean with super friendly staff! Only wish they would have had a place to sit and enjoy these sweet treats!

It's painful to watch a once-good thing slide into mediocrity. We've been coming to Buttermilk Bake Shop for years, but today was probably our last trip. The prices are higher than they should be. I have no issue with paying for quality. The problem now is that the quality is in the gutter. We ordered a dozen and they were flat, gooey, and tasted a little like yesterday's donuts. The toppings were sparse and really not worth the effort. They don't permit indoor seating of any type. COVID, I guess? The restroom was out of order. And the attitude of the staff was, "I can't really be bothered." We weren't greeted but worse was that the counterperson never not once made eye contact. I felt like I'd interrupted her from something more important. I'm not going all the way to one star because I want to see them make a comeback. Hopefully they will. But until they do, we're former customers.

Needed cupcakes and pastries at the last minute and BMBS gave me plenty to choose from! Fluffy cupcakes / rich frosting / variety. There were other pastries coming out of the oven but I got what I needed before I added anything else. $25 for a dozen.

I had the mini truffle cheesecake and some peanut butter caramel cupcake. I liked the cupcake much better than the cheesecake! However both were veeery good! Love the shop ambience and staff was sweet! Will return

Delicious! Very kind counter person, who walked me through what was available, since it was my first visit. Had to get the banana cake! Only "criticism" would be to ask for my gluten free options to be available later in the day, I'd at all possible; when I was there, what they had, had sold out.

When I want to get filled up by my monthly cream pie, this is my place to come. Josiah the big man behind the counter knows what I like and how I like it. Derek is pretty good too, but sometimes he goes overboard with the filling. But that's okay because no where else can fill me up with a good ole fashion cream pie like this place!

This place is amazing. The blueberry lemon donut, the coffee carmel donut, the mini cheesecakes are to die for. You must try this place if you are ever in the area, truly worth the stop.

I came back to this establishment after tasting cupcakes that were given to me during my birthday. This past Sunday, I woke up with the intention of giving them a try to curve a sweet tooth that I was having. Needless to say, I drove almost 40 minutes to get to this establishment. I went in and they had a variety of pastries at 8:00 in the morning. After inquiring about the freshness of the goods, I was assured that everything was baked fresh that morning. After hearing this I settled for: german chocolate, vanilla, strawberry, and red velvet cupcakes. As I took the long drive back home, I anticipated the sweet delight that I was in for. The aroma that consumed my car was ever so delightful. As I pulled into my driveway, I rushed into the house, threw my bags down, and sunk my teeth into my treats (insert sad face). To my surprise and dismay, each cupcake was grossly stale and lacked any type of moistness. It was obvious that I was served "day-old cupcakes". The icing was good, but who thinks about the icing if the cake itself is lackluster in quality. Overall, I gave them a two-star rating because of the past experience vs this one. The potential is definitely there and I hope this was just a fluke and this isn't the new direction for the quality of their food. I will probably give them another try if I am in the area again, but I won't be making any more early morning Sunday trips.

We come here 1-2 times a month. A bit disappointed this last time. The staff seemed to be rushing through the order. The Apple fritter and stuffed donut were extremely greasy and one of the cupcakes smelled like fish food. We usually take every one that comes to visit. The flourless chocolate cupcakes and cheesecake cupcakes were a hit.

This is one of the few places you can get allllll the baked good categories: cake, cupcakes, pie, donuts, cheesecake, cookies and more. Everything here is tasty and expertly crafted! Plenty of parking in the side lot and right there with Saucy's BBQ!

Small private owner bake shop in old renovated part of historic city. Used to get dozen after every Friday night firehouse duty. Always great and fresh.

6 stars...lol! I ordered a smorgasbord of treats. Mini cherry cheesecake, red velvet cupcake, vegan oatmeal cookie, chocolate cupcake & a dog treat. Loved it all...my pupper ate his treat in one sitting. I highly recommend trying one of everything. That's my plan! lol

I've stopped into this bakery a few times an was always glad I did. They have Vegan and non vegan options. They also have homemade dog treats. I wish I would have thought to take pictures before we ate everything. Oh well maybe next time.

I 've been here before and have been sweetly pleased. They have doughnuts and cupcakes and other sweets. Today I went in for cupcakes and was disappointed due to the selection . They had maybe 4 to choose from . This is the reason for the 4 stars . So I opted for a Bavarian Cream doughnut and a chocolate chip cookie. They normally have a nice selection to choose from . It may have been due to coming back from the weekend . It was a Monday. The bakery is sweet and neat . The staff is attentive and the things I've bought from here are good. They also have vegan and gluten free options which is nice. Pies and specialty cakes can be ordered as well.
