Perfect stop after a run on the Minuteman! Lemonade was perfectly tart and sweet. Chai latte wasn't sweet but they have simple syrup. Croissants had ample filling and a nice texture -- sure they'd taste even better warmed!

First time customer, long time lurker (as in, I’ve been thinking about going for a long time). I got: -ham and cheese croissant : I’m a HUGE ham and cheese croissant fan and this one was good, but could have been better. Just to be clear, the croissant itself is super high quality and delicious. I definitely think it is light on the ham (not even close to being in every bite). Still, really good. -morning bun: HOLY GUACAMOLE this thing was amazing. 100/10. I think it’s croissant dough? It’s sugary, crispy, and gooey at the same time. Will certainly come back for this (and maybe build a few holiday boxes for others with them). It’s pricey, but I get it. Will return.

Amazing little bakery that is a well-deserved favorite of the community! Stopping by was a great experience with friendly staff and a line that moved very quickly. The pizza slices are truly lovely, the texture of the bread is so fluffy and light while the flavors are always yummy. The pastries all look great and taste just as good, the cardamom swirl is definitely a must-try but can’t go wrong with anything here!

This has quickly become a favorite bakery/coffee spot after a friend introduced me! They have their classic baked goods every day and throw in something new/different every week. They make lattes the right way by mixing their housemade syrups in with the espresso so you have the full flavor with every sip vs. a sipful of syrup or of milk! My only complaint is that they are closed on Mondays but the day off is very well earned ☺️

Stopped by in the afternoon for coffee with a friend. The espresso chocolate cake was really good—rich chocolate flavor that paired perfectly with the coffee. The atmosphere is good for quick catching up. Not bad overall.

Hands down the best bakery in the ENTIRE WORLD and if you can’t get behind that it’s definitely the best bakery in the greater Boston area (even featured in The Boston Globe). I have had almost everything thing this bakery has to offer and I can confidently, whole-heartedly, swear that they can do not wrong (there was this one pastry I didn’t like but it had to be a me problem). The owner has perfected the art of flakiness and any croissant like pastry will leave trail of happiness and crumbs. The staff is incredible as well, true gems. Each visit of mine consists of warm greetings and endearing smiles as they fill my bag with delightful treats, sometime I even get an extra morning bun. My favorite is the everything croissant, an explanation will do no justice you’ll just have to try it yourself and you’ll want to get there early before they sell out. Another favorite of mine are the unique cardamom swirls. I bet you’ve never heard of such a thing. Again you’ll just have to go try it. In the afternoon they serve pizza with brilliant (vegetarian friendly) topping combinations and fabulous flavor. Furthermore, I the bakery is women owned, queer owned, LGBTQIA+ plus friendly, and is more welcoming than Starbucks and Tatte adjacent places. I can not speak highly enough of this bakery and if you’ve been searching for something new look no further. The worst thing, I’ve experience are the rude customers that come in at near closing and expect extra efforts from an already amazing hardworking early rising staff. Please go and support. They deserve it and you deserve a treat.

Google
Incredible little bakery and cafe with wide selection of delicious pastries, specializing in croissants, with frequently rotating specials, and delicious drinks. Staff are friendly and quick and the atmosphere is vibrant and lively. Hand pies and savory croissants are my favorites, but the scones and sweet croissants are also to die for! Also, they have the best hot chocolate of any cafe in the area.

Google
The food is always GRADE A BEAUTIFULLY MADE!! Chef’s kiss. I always enjoy watching them baking in the background. However, if you come when it’s busy, it’s BUUUSSSY. And I feel for the staff, but don’t expect to get in and out unless it’s off hours. Going in early on Saturday or Sunday (before 8am) is perfect. I’m also holding out hope they buy out one of the store fronts nearby to expand. The space is not big enough for the amount of people who come through.

Yelp
Still amazing as the first time I went! Have tried a lot of bakeries since and recently came back here and got the spinach and feta croissant. Such a good croissant, buttery and flaky!! The pineapple and coconut scone was a nice surprise to see! Love trying unique flavoured scones!!
google avatar

Yelp
Such a cute little bakery! They had a variety of beverages (I got a special pea flower tea with strawberry that was DELICIOUS) and a handful of pastries. The breakfast sandwich was so good! And the staff was friendly and quick!

Yelp
I've visited both locations: Belmont and Arlington. Arlington is much smaller but still mighty. The pastries are so good and fresh. I've tried the raspberry corncake, the apple cake and matcha latte. The matcha in my opinion is too large, I'd prefer a smaller portion even if the cost is the same since I never end up finishing it. At the Belmont location I've tried the tuna sandwich since the Arlington location does not sell sandwiches. I will continue to support this local business. The staff is consistently friendly.

Yelp
Hands down my favorite bakery in MA. You can't go wrong with any item on the menu, pretty much everything is delicious. My favorites are their everything croissant, cretzel, and blueberry bar...so far. My sister is addicted to their caneles. Their sweet pastries are not too overwhelmingly sweet which is what I like and everything is baked fresh everyday!
google avatar

Lucy L.

Yelp
I'm now addicted to the morning buns which started out as a second choice when the apple fritters were not yet available( fritters are only available Sunday after 9:30am)

Yelp
How lucky are we in New England to have so many terrific coffee shops to enjoy?! Here is another little delight with a variety of sweets and savories to go with your tasty latte or London Fog. Scones, cookies, breads, muffins, macaroons, croissants, too many to name. Small seating area gets packed quickly, so be prepared to take yours to go or grab the couple counter stools where you can enjoy your cardamom swirl.

Yelp
My friends had raved about Butternut Bakehouse, so I was excited to check it out! They were pretty busy on a Saturday (late) morning, but the line to order moved quickly. The interior was very small, but had some seating and cute art/decor. I ordered a Vietnamese Iced Coffee and Blueberry Bar. The Blueberry Bar was fantastic - great texture, perfect level of sweetness. It was also surprisingly filling. The Vietnamese Iced Coffee was tasty, but not really authentic. It tasted more like an Iced Coffee just sweetened with condensed milk - not as strong as I was expecting. However, I tried a sip of my friend's Hibiscus Limeade, and that was so good and refreshing. Would return to try more!

Yelp
Overall: can safely say that this place has the best caneles in Boston as far as I can tell! This cute little bakery in East Arlington doesn't seem like they'd specialize in French patisserie. Yet here I am telling you that the $4.00 (as of Fall '24) caneles are worth every chomp. Caneles: cause this is all I came for. The initial smell of a custard like caramel reminds you of crème brûlée without being burnt to a basque. The visuals of the golden brown are lighter than some but the exterior still maintains the waxy glistening crunch. Once you bite into it the comb like visual really illustrates the beeswax candle imitation. The taste of a sponge like caramel esq custard like flavor mixes well with the crunchy exterior. And as my friend so passionately reviewed last time about how these were some of the best caneles, I too forgot to take a photo of the caneles and hope to come back again.

Yelp
I travel a lot. I eat out A LOT. I've had many BLT's but the one I had here was probably the best I've ever had in 20 years of traveling for work. It was fresh, crispy, savory, the pickled onions and aioli made this sandwich sing. I'd come back again and again if I could!

Yelp
Butternut is AMAZING. The people are so lovely, the food and coffee is divine, the space is lovely. I'm so glad to have this bakery in arlington

Yelp
First time customer , used Too good 2 go app, ordered the night before, go to pick up today, with Mass Ave traffic, and the door was locked! Got in, and the employee was like , it's not on the app! Thing is, they say pick up is 4:44 , and they lock the door @ 4! . Left pissed off, with no product, and it was paid for. Didn't like the vibe here, she acted like I was trying to rob them of leftovers! First time, last time, they wasted my time.

Yelp
Finally made it to Butternut Bakehouse in Arlington! Cute bakery with a ton of delicious items to pick from. I picked up a couple of the weekend special Kaya Donuts, a Morning Bun, Banana Bread with Walnuts, and a cappucino to go. Service was great. Store had a steady stream of customers so you know that everything is super fresh. Nothing is uber sweet which leaves room for a finer appreciation of the other flavors and textures. The Morning Bun reminds me of petite palmiers in the flakiness. The Kaya donut is my favorite, with its gooey, custardy center encased in soft fresh bread. The banana bread has a hint of spices, I couldn't put my finger on it, but it's very moist and really quite good.

Yelp
Cute little spot for pastries and coffee. There are some window seats if you want to eat there. The morning bun and chocolate chip cookie were both delicious!

Yelp
What a great little spot! There were many tasty looking pastries and breakfast items and staff was very helpful and friendly. Really enjoyed everything we ordered! Cretzel (croissant pretzel) was delicious and a perfect crunch on the outside and soft on the inside. Loved the everything bagel seasoning on top. Perfect savory pastry. Savory hand pie had great filling with white bean, spinach, and some onions. Great filling ratio on the inside. Also pastry was perfect consistency. Would have been great warmed up! Quiche was super fluffy and not too much crust on the bottom (also no soggy bottom!). The outside, top crust was perfect. Inside of quiche was delicious and not runny. Breakfast sandwich had really good and unique flavor! Didn't love it on the focaccia because it was too light and fluffy (would have been great on toasted something or a croissant). We also really enjoyed the Americano! It had good flavor, but definitely was not hot enough (usually they are way too hot). This was a great breakfast spot, seemed to have consistent flow of customers, great to sit for awhile, and bathrooms were clean! Highly recommend.

Yelp
Cookies were large and thoroughly enjoyable. I got the chocolate chip cookie, which might be my favorite of all the fancy bakery chocolate chip cookies I've tried. It's very chocolatey and chewy. The lavender shortbread was divine too. It was half dipped in chocolate, which I didn't mind but I also would have been happy without it. The space inside only has 3 very small tables and room for maybe 4-5 people along the window. But at least there's seating and a bathroom, which many small bakeries like this don't have. It's a bit out of the way for me but I still want to go back and try more baked goods!

Yelp
Excellent selections and excellent baking. The pain au chocolat was nice and flaky, with large chunks of chocolate inside. The flakiness was spot on, as was the balance of textures. The morning bun was also excellent, though there was a bit too much sugar on the top layer. The cinnamon flavors in the middle were just the right amount, and the middle was also nice and gooey. 7 stars if I could!

Dilek K.

Yelp
We enjoyed coffee and deserts. Good selection, wish there were more seating available.
google avatar

Veronica L.

Yelp
Recommend by a friend, I guess the long line every morning in front of the bake house is also a good recommendation :) love the morning bun. We also ordered an egg tart, a little bit too sweet for us. Coffee is great!

Yelp
Discovered this gem of a place when my mom broke her arm and had to wait and scrounge for breakfast! And wow did I find so much more! Maybe it was just the hunger, or the adrenaline, or the magic of this place but this has by far been my favorite bakery in the Boston area! I got a pizza-eske focaccia bread and a canele and they were both not only very flavorful, but also just the right crispness and moisture to them! I don't find many bakeries selling caneles because it tends to be really hard to perfect but they managed to do it so well! In fact, it's safe to say that so far, this is the best canele I've tried in my life! I gobbled my food down too fast to get a picture, unfortunately, but I'll definitely have to come back, I've been having dreams about this place!

Yelp
Okay, last weekend I was photographing a wedding and had the yummiest Morning Bun of my life (provided as a snack to vendors by the wedding couple). The fluffy dough, the sweet cinnamon sugar crystals, the buttery undertones...it transported me to a different dimension. So, a week later, my husband and I came here on a Saturday morning so I could show him the magic I had experienced. And let me just say...the food lived up to my exquisite memory. We got: - quiche (they warmed it up - DIVINE) - morning bun (no words. you must order) - potato croissant (a wild card choice. had frank's hot sauce on top?? v delish!) and to go, we ordered: - cardamom twist (sooo tasty and perfect) - chocolate bouchon (a small baked item that kind of tastes like a chocolate lava cake - no chocolate sauce, but the inside is SO moist and decadent!) We also got coffee and a cappuccino which were both fine. The baked food is where it is AT. We drove 30 minutes to get here and I plan to do it again. Definitely stop by .... even if you're not in town :) P.S. the inside has a few two-top tables and two window bar spots for sitting, so not a lot of seating but very cute! And the guy who took my order was so friendly and emphatically my menu choices.

Yelp
The thanksgiving sandwich on sourdough literally changed my life it's so good. Perfectly salty and sweet and then fried shallots are amazing on it. Loved the mocha too nice and bitter not too sweet!

Yelp
My 2021 Boston croissant search included a very impressive showing at Butternut Bakehouse (Arlington MA). Chocolate croissant: It wasn't warm, but its outer crunch and buttery inner tenderness still came roaring through, with just the right amount of dark chocolate chunks (you shouldn't have too many and shouldn't upstage the croissant itself). Pop Tart: Everyone's doing them nowadays. Their take on a pop tart was basically raspberry strudel meets crunchy phyllo dough. Solid. Almond Cornmeal Cake: The item with the most wow factor, and also with raspberries. Imagine the moistest, butteriest cornbread ever and then imagine moister and butterier. Or more moist, more buttery, and more grammatically correct. Very impressive bakery. Even with sharing and not finishing, I skipped lunch. Looking forward to revisiting in 2022.

Christopher C.

Yelp
Excellent Parisian-style patisserie with well made baked goods. Very small, only four tables. Staff is friendly, hardworking and helpful. Tried the egg tart. Pain au chocolat, some others. Great.

Yelp
Love the new Belmont cafe. Delicious pastries (I love the seasonal danish) and good sandwiches. Coffee is great too. This is will a frequent place for me. Yum!

Yelp
I live in Boston and would easily travel 30 minutes to Arlington to visit Butternut Bakehouse again. I've had this cute little bakery on my to-try list for a couple of months now and it did not disappoint. Street parking is relatively easy to find right outside of the bakery. My sisters and I visited on a Sunday around 11:00am and it was quite busy. There was a line of about five people in front of us and it moved quickly! Luckily, we were able to snag one of the three tables inside. I thought it was cute and considerate that customers lined their empty baby carriages outside of the bakery since there is limited space inside. In terms of food, we ordered a couple morning buns, two focaccia pizzas, one with potato, kale, and tomato and another with potato, onion, and olives. The morning bun was flaky with the perfect amount of cinnamon and the focaccia pizzas were soft and doughy (my sisters favorite type of pizzas). My only minor critique about the focaccia pizza is that I wished it was served at a warmer temperature. (I am particular about temperatures of food and beverages though). My sisters ordered a matcha latte with oat milk and a hot chocolate. I sampled both myself and can say they were equally delicious. We will be back again and cannot wait to try other items on the menu.
google avatar

Molly A.

Yelp
Two words: everything croissant. This little bakery in the heart of Arlington has some of the best pastries I've ever tasted! I ordered an everything bagel croissant, a morning bun, and a Vietnamese iced coffee. The croissant was so flaky and buttery, and the cream cheese middle was perfection! The morning bun was the perfect combination of sweet and dense, and I loved the iced coffee! The service was outstanding- everyone at the front counter was lovely. Be warned before you go in- the storefront is pretty small, but the line moves quick.
google avatar

Julie K.

Yelp
12% administrative fee now? I enjoy the coffee and pastry but the price for both has already increased. Now they add a 12% fee. Small amount but it adds up over time. I won't be coming here as often.

Kat L.

Yelp
The only reason why I give this place 3 stars is because of the service. It is pretty bad. I love almost everything they sell but I cringe going because of the service. I probably buy something from this place once a week. I can honestly say that more than 50% of the time the service is bad. One time I walked in and it wasn't busy, maybe 1 or 2 people in front of me. After the 1st person in line was helped and paid, the server started having a casual conversation with the patron (they clearly knew each other). It went on for at least 5 mins, then the server looked up and saw there was someone waiting (me) and I am not joking....kept talking to the patron another minute or two before coming to help me. Another time it was a little busier, there was only one person working the front yet I saw at least one maybe two people in the back doing absolutely nothing. I've been in the restaurant business for over 30yrs and even when I'm on a break if it got busy, I would help out. It's a shame because I really like the baked goods here. I may start going to the Belmont location from now on though.

Lael S.

Yelp
Hey, I've had a few items from here. Generally they are fresh and appealing, so I was floored when I tried a fruited scone. I've never before had an utterly tasteless scone (though I've experienced poor scones flavored with a cringe worthy sugary glaze). I couldn't even figure out what the fruit was. I'll stick to their French style pastries in the future.
google avatar

Suhani A.

Yelp
Love this place! It's a small cute vibe and has really really good breakfast and lunch items! I absolutely love their focaccia pizzas and their sandwiches are so good too!! They also have a good assortment of pastries and drinks! Highly recommend stopping by!
google avatar

Sarah B.

Yelp
Who couldn't love this place. It truly is adorable little bakery with great food. For a quaint town of Arlington, this ranks in my head as the top coffee shop in town.
google avatar

Elizabeth Z.

Yelp
Love this place; the food and drinks are so delicious. My tried and true here is an iced dirty chai with oat milk and simple syrup with a morning bun (the cookies and croissants are worth mentioning because they are equally amazing) The only downside to Butternut are the prices; this place tends to run on the more expensive side, so I can't frequent this spot as much as I would like. There are a few tables in the store to do work, however it's a relatively small space, so do with that what you will. The staff is always very sweet and playing good music. Recommend!!
google avatar

John L.

Yelp
There are many very good bakeries in and around metro Boston that make delicious items and Butternut is our favorite. Whether sweet or savory, their recipes strike a nice balance so you can taste each of the flavors in every bite. The Apple fritter is a must try - just the right amount of sweet, apple tartness with a hint of citrus wrapped up in a chewy dough to complement your morning coffee! It came out on top of our family "taste test" as did their buttery, ham and cheese croissant (true to their name). Highly recommend!! Stay tuned for a Morning / sticky bun "taste off"

Mary Lee G.

Yelp
Everything looked very good, but it was deceiving. The place was packed. It's a decent coffee shop, although too small for the crowds. The baking powder biscuit was literally hard as a rock and cold. Couldn't cut it with a knife. Too salty. Inedible. We waited over 20 minutes for two lattes, one biscuit and one piece of quiche. The service was absolutely miserable. Tables were placed so close together that I had to hold one ear closed because two people were shouting at the next table. $24 and we almost ran out of there.
google avatar

Laura M.

Yelp
Excellent croissants and fun, different (but not too different) pastry (I.e., earl gray lavender twist). Great staff and lattes, too!
google avatar

Juliet K.

Yelp
You know you are in for something good when the line to the bakery goes all the way down the block even on the weekdays. This is not a bakery for bringing your laptop and sitting all day (go to Caffe Nero for that). This is a bakery where you get incredible baked goods and bring them home or eat them outside on the bench or on your walk home because you can't wait. Located just outside of Arlington center across from the Jason Russell house in a nondescript commercial building, you might even miss this little gem. There is not a single item sold here that I have not been impressed by. They do croissants so right that even a French person will be satisfied. The cinnamon buns are airy and coated in just the right amount of sugar, and holy moly: the salted chocolate cookies! For the savory folk, quiches and sandwiches are hearty and filling. I can't comment on the coffee because I have never had it, but the soy chai lattes are the best in Arlington IMHO. This 12th day of February 2023, Butternut Bakehouse is the best of many very very good bakeries in Arlington (and it's small and independently owned, too!)

Caroline O.

Yelp
they made the worst matcha latte I've ever had. bitter chemical aftertaste, not mixed properly so I could feel the powder sliding down my throat. I had to add a sugar packet and stir it just to make it barely tolerable. Overpriced, and poor quality. do not recommend

I AM D.

Yelp
Best pastries and everything about is amazing I go here at least every week or 2 ! And every time I come here I always feel satisfied! I'm very happy that this bakery house is here great service and ambience :) I do have 1 suggestions please make more or an equal amount of vegan pastries

Ruth K.

Yelp
I love the bakery. It would be nice if they would offer to warm the baked goods. we ate them cold and they were much worse (though still good) than when we take them home and warm them. As for the gift cards -- I bought some gift cards for friends and there was no way to track down what happened to them through the receipt I got. It seems that they don't send the buyer the number needed to track what happened.
google avatar

Helena Q.

Yelp
Kind of disappointed in the quality of these pastries! And competition is high in this area. For 18$ plus tip, I tried four items: the ham and cheese croissant (outer croissant was deliciously crisp, but not much filling and middle was mushy), a potato croissant (mostly mush and tasted only of hot sauce), a lemon and poppyseed cake (dry), and a jam roll (very little jam and mostly mush, but the jam did taste good). Maybe their regular croissant is the way to go, but the stuff I tried was just meh.
google avatar

Kweilyn C.

Yelp
Hands down the best bakery anywhere around in the area! I have sampled almost everything on Suzana's menu at this point and it is all honestly just so fantastic. The staff is lovely, every morsel is to die for. Please try it for yourself. There's a reason there's always a line out the door most days.
google avatar

Caroline S.

Yelp
This was my first time going and plan to keep coming back. They had so many delicious options and the staff were really friendly as well. I really enjoyed the morning bun and the chocolate chip cookie. But I definitely want to return for the pizza and some of the other exciting looking treats!

Justine G.

Yelp
Such a cute little place! It's quite small so not much seating, but there are a few tables. Street parking only. I've been here several times and everything I've tried has been delicious. They have a pretty wide selection of sweet and savory pastries, but it's typically quite busy so if you are looking for something specific I would recommend getting there early. Coffee is also good. All the staff is super friendly as well :)
google avatar

Prachee K.

Yelp
Best bakery in Arlington. Croissants done just right - flaky and crispy on the outside, buttery and soft inside. The croissant dough focaccia pizzas are bomb as well - different toppings each time, go early to grab a slice.

Beth I.

Yelp
I had the crumble bar (blueberry and peach) which was packed with fruit. For $4 it is a real value because the bar was huge! My chai tea latte was delicious as well. Friendly and fast customer service.
google avatar

Yelp
So far so good! This coffee shop is around the corner from where I had many prenatal visits, so I would occasionally stop to grab an on-the-go bite and a latte. I am a stan for a small-business coffee shop and love it even more when I see the 10+ staff members working tirelessly to make coffees and delicious fresh baked goods all morning. Butternut over corporate coffee shops all day.

Yelp
I first found out about Butternut Bakehouse from my wife who had stopped by a couple of days after opening and picked up a few random things -- including the broccoli quiche. I have to say - I've had a lot of quiche (not proud) in my life, but this one was by far the best quiche Ive eaten. As silly as this may sound, all quiche is not the same. There are massive differences in taste, texture, consistency, etc. This place seems to make it truly perfectly (and from a few more orders - also consistently). A couple of weeks later we walked by the place at lunch and decided to stop in. Other than picking up the broccoli quiche :), I picked up their veggie lunch sandwich. It was made up of whipped feta, tomato jam, herb slaw, sprouts, carrots, and lettuce. One thing that stood out to me almost immediately is how juicy and flavorful it was. From my past experiences at Kickstand (down a few streets), I did not expect that a sandwich can be this flavorful. But more importantly *not* dry -- this is something that really frustrates me about Kickstand. We ended up picking up a second veggie sandwich to split since the first one was so good. I have to say, I am really impressed at the quality of the food so far. Definitely a place we will stop by more often. The only hard part is the hours, but, it's a bakery so this is to be expected.

Kelvin H.

Yelp
Having worked at a food company which also taught professional courses, I have eaten a substantial amount of fine pastries, breads, dessert, and viennoiseries over the years. Butternut bake house serves some of the best I have had. Me and my wife tried a couple of sweet and savory items from butternut and they have been amazing. Our favorite items are the croissants (the danish and almond) unbelievably flaky and buttery goodness, the surprising one was a pizza bread ( I didn't think we would like it), my son claimed the chocolate cookie, It was soft, chocolatey, and fluffy but not cakey with a slight crust.
google avatar

Liliana R.

Yelp
I got an assortment of things from them on a Saturday afternoon, and everything I tried was tasty, but their Jam Bun was definitely my favorite. It has a yummy house-made raspberry jam with cream cheese baked into the middle of it, and omg it was drool-worthy good. I will definitely be coming back for that alone, but I will obviously buy a ton of other things while I'm there, because they make quality baked goods. The servers were super friendly, and street parking is a easier in this area, so that's enough to bring me back as well.
