15 Most Anticipated Restaurants Across the Carolinas for Spring 2025 | Eater Carolinas

"Pastry chef Beth Kellerhals, better known as the "Queen of Biscuits," has amassed a following for her buttery, flaky creations; soon those pastries will be available at a set address in the River Arts District. The cafe will offer plenty of biscuit sandwiches as well as pastries and coffee. The project had been slated to open last fall, but damages from Hurricane Helene delayed it." - Erin Perkins

Not busy on a Monday morning. Got the caramel miso latte. Delish. The sandwich was to DIE for. Flies didn't bother me, but very small seating area with only a few tables, a big picnic-type table with benches, and a counter with low stools. Having a cane, they were easy to get on and off. You bus your own table. Put your order in and they give you a buzzer that vibrates when your order is ready. If I lived here, I'd be a regular. Really yummy biscuit, too!

Wow. The best biscuit sandwich AND scone I've ever had was here at the new BUTTER PUNK bakery in the River Arts District. Great place to get food and coffee and shop for artwork right across the street! The biscuits live up to the hype and reputation of the “Queen of Biscuits”, Beth Kellerhals. The sandwich was made with a crispy edge biscuit, along with an egg cooked perfectly, and delicious candied bacon. The strawberry scone was moist and full of flavor with an amazing cream cheese frosting. I also had the Miso caramel latte - which was out of this world delicious! With food like this, they will no doubt succeed and I am very happy for them!

Google
An awesome new breakfast spot! These biscuits are delicious and buttery. I loved the sausage which went great with the special mayo. My husband really enjoyed the candied bacon on his sandwich. We also got the chocolate chip cookie, which was easily the best cookie I’ve ever eaten. Sooo tasty, cute atmosphere and lovely people!

Google
If I could give Butter Punk 6 stars, I would — one extra just for the tomato jam alone. That BLT biscuit? Life-changing. I didn’t know bacon could be that crispy and that tender at the same time. The homemade tomato jam deserves its own fan club. And the vanilla latte? I’m pretty sure it was brewed by coffee angels. The vibe inside is so chill, I felt like I accidentally wandered into the coolest brunch party ever — and the owner is the kind of sweet that makes you wonder if she’s part cinnamon roll. Bottom line: come hungry, leave emotionally attached. 10/10 would risk developing a biscuit addiction again.

I’ve eaten here three times. First time I ate biscuits and gravy, second time I had a biscuit sandwich, and today I ate a biscuit with a side of gravy. The biscuits are crunchy and a bit hard on the outside though it is soft and spongy on the inside. It was perfect for the sandwich, rendered mush underneath a big bowl of gravy; but today I really wanted a biscuit that hadn’t been reheated and made crunchy or hard on the outside. But no, that’s just how the biscuits are here. It was huge and even with a “shot” of gravy it was too much food for me. The gravy is mushroom gravy and it is wonderful. The Angeleno ice coffee is fantastic.

The OG Breakfast Sammie, soufflé egg and sausage biscuit is fabulous! The sauce is yummy and I had the tomato jam on it. So good!

Google
Loved the food service and vibe of the new “biscuit place” in the RAD. I ordered the biscuit sandwich with candied bacon (egg and cheese) and my partner opted for the homemade sausage add on to his egg and cheese biscuit. The biscuits themselves are SO good, didn’t *love* the sausage but it was still a great meal. I read all the reviews so we ordered the strawberry scone and it was absolutely perfect. I’ve heard from friends that weekends are packed and going later could mean things are sold out so we arrived at 8:05 Friday and I’d say 60% of the seating was taken up by that time so def plan ahead. Such a cute indoor space, I could see Butterpunk being in Brooklyn or San Francisco. Can’t wait to go back!

Beth Kellerhal and Dana Amromin brought their distinctive, mouth-watering menu to RAD after earning high praise from prior food truck ventures to include Smorgasburg Los Angeles. At Butter Punk, their Butter Bomb Biscuits, among the best l've ever had, are featured in dishes to include the OG Breakfast Sammie with soufflé egg, cheddar and special mayo, and with a luscious mushroom gravy, served with paprika as well as fresh flat-leaf parsley and dill. Service is cheerful and welcoming; the eclectic ambiance gives a perfect artsy vibe.

Yelp
Delicious biscuits piled high or a large plate of biscuits and gravy, whatever your heart desires. Come here for breakfast immediately. Super nice staff and delicious coffee. I can see me coming to Butter Punk every visit. Don't take my word for it. Go see for yourself. Sidenote, if you drink decaf coffee, you know how hard brewed decaf is to find. They have it!

Yelp
I was drawn to this restaurant due to a yelp review mentioning their sausage gravy with mushrooms as my husband is an avid fan of both gravy (of any kind but especially sausage gravy) and mushrooms so those two thing together had to be a hit! What we found was actually a delicious cream gravy with mushrooms (vegetarian and possibly vegan) that you could have sausage added to. This is not your grandmas biscuits and gravy but it's definitely uniquely tasty in its own way! The biscuits were fresh and you could see the hard work going into making them in the kitchen. The kitchen employees seemed to enjoy working together as a team which is always nice to see.

Yelp
Stopped by while on a trip in Asheville. Solid spot for breakfast/coffee. The staff was kind and greeted us and didn't feel rushed to place our order. The biscuits themselves are very different from the traditional southern, fluffy or flaky biscuits. Still good, their recipe is a more crispy, crackly biscuit with sweetness to it if you are fan of that type. There are various seating arrangements but I wish it could have been a bit more organized. It's pretty much find your seat when you can - my party as well as two other couples that were waiting behind us were waiting for seats to open up. One table did, but the latest patrons that came in just so happened to be standing there and it kind of sucked they "jumped" all of our waits and took those seats. Outside of how seating is, good & unique place to try out. Would recommend.

Yelp
Finally got to visit butter punk & I'm still dreaming about the biscuit I had. I got the OG breakfast sandwich with sage sausage. It had a homemade biscuit, aioli, a soufflé egg, sausage and cheese. YUM. I don't know what kind of magic they used to make the egg but holy cow it was perfect! Can't wait to go back!

Yelp
Excellent biscuit sandwiches and pastries! Inside is casual and cute. Service was prompt and staff was very friendly!

Yelp
The biscuits are very large and tasty- unfortunately they weren't warm (I was hoping for hot). There is an up charge for butter and jam that was ok. Hubby got a breakfast biscuit that was delicious. The candied bacon was good. Hubby had drip coffee and I had the cafe au lait. Smaller mugs than I expected but still good. The staff was friendly, decor is quirky, bathroom is clean, and there was just short wait for a table and food. There is parking on the street as well as a lot.

Yelp
Super delicious. New Little spot. Inside is very cute and well curated. I like that. It stays busy, but there is never a very long. Wait because they keep the menu simple. You are going here for a biscuit or a baked good and that's what you get, and it's gonna be a good one. Dan, but not too dense, buttery and flaky, but not too flaky (Can you really be too buttery?). The coffee is also delicious, and the workers are super kind. I do wish they had a vegetarian meat alternative.

Shae D.

Yelp
Such a cute breakfast spot in the River Arts District. Their Miso Caramel Latte was the best latte I've ever had!

Kathryn L.

Yelp
Great spot! Definitely busy on a Sunday around lunch time, so a bit tough to find seating. The daily special was delicious: biscuits with sausage gravy and a fried egg. I also ordered an ice vanilla latte and it was perfect, I think they make their own vanilla syrup (didn't taste artificial like many places).

Yelp
Love this new spot in RAD. Such a cool funky vibe inside and the biscuits are amazing. Such a nice crunchy biscuit and you have to try a pastry from the case. They rotate the options and the scones are seasonal. The blackberry scone with lemon glaze was really good. Go early, though. We got there right when it opened at 8 and it was starting to pick up when we left. About 2 hours later we passed by and there was a line out the door. Everyone in there is super friendly too!

Debbie J.

Yelp
Exceptional biscuits. Limited seating and noisy but well worth it. Would have liked multiple flavors of jams and jellies. Local molasses would be a perfect addition.

Yelp
Is 5 stars really the highest rating I can give? Maybe they need to add a few more for places like this. This new women-owned biscuit bakery in Asheville's Upper River Arts District (RAD) is truly amazing and one-of-a-kind. From the interesting interior decor, to the fantastic, friendly service to the incredible food and coffee, innovative places like this are exactly what the RAD needs to usher in its recovery from last year's devastating hurricane Helene and its historic flooding. The biscuits here are without a doubt the best biscuits I've ever had. Sorry, Biscuit Head, there's no contest here. Not even my grandma's biscuits were this good. They are ample sized, golden brown and crispy on the outside and white and flaky on the inside. We had them as breakfast biscuit sammies with egg and cheese, and one with added candied bacon. Both were super good and enough for a filling breakfast before a walk along the French Broad River greenway. Their coffee is excellent as well. Prices are inline with portion size and quality of the food. We got a beautiful fresh strawberry scone with a sumac glaze to go. Haven't tried it yet, but I'm already looking forward to having it tomorrow morning for breakfast with some additional strawberries from our garden. We will definitely be back to try their biscuits with mushroom gravy and their other baked treats. It's also our new go-to coffee spot when in the RAD. UPDATE: The strawberry scone we got to go was almost as good as the biscuits, which, as I noted in my original review above, are hands down THE BEST BISCUITS EVER.

Yelp
For not being a biscuit person, I absolutely love these! Best in the area and of all I've ever tried...Crunchy on the outside, fluffy and buttery on the inside and not too dense. We went today around noon and they were out of all the pastries, scones and biscuits. We had to wait for them to make more biscuits but it was worth it. Their homemade jams are also delicious. I am not a fan of the taste of their homemade sausage but that's just personal preference, the bacon on the sandwich I enjoyed better. Next time will try their mushroom gravy, if you like biscuits you absolutely need to support this local business!

Yelp
What a place to grab breakfast at holy cow was it tasty. Get the OG breakfast sandwich and a slice of pie lines out the door Sunday.

Yelp
The word is out now, so go early! Another delicious monster biscuit, this time not drenched in melted butter.

Yelp
My partner & tried Butter Punk today after a few missed opportunities. Lovely ambience but the food was disappointing after all the hype we have both read. The service was nice and everyone was extremely personable. I ordered a vanilla latte which was perfect but the biscuits were disappointing . I had an egg and bacon biscuit , the bacon was delicious savoury with a slight maple flavour . The egg had an odd texture and was almost like a soufflé not a pleasant mouthful. My partner ordered a biscuit with mushroom gravy which was more like a stew rather than a gravy. I understand there are vegetarians but it would be nice to have a traditional sausage gravy. Just my humble opinion. Overall a decent experience which could be much better with some tweaks.

Yelp
This location is very curly decorated. My biscuit was amazing. Coffee was OK. The service was very slow. I finished my biscuit before my coffee was ever ready.

Yelp
Stop whatever you are doing and get over to Butter Punk. The biscuits are some of the best I've ever tasted and the jam? Amazing. This place is super cute, super small and women owned. Watching them stir up a batch while eating our breakfast was super cool. Limited seating but totally worth it. Can't wait to go back and try another pastry.

Yelp
It's a biscuit place kind of like hole is a donut place. Completely next level. Had sausage egg biscuit and shot of gravy. Really perfect in every way. Yet another one that seems to think standing in line to order getting your own silver napkins water condiments and bussing your own table warrants the same tip structure as a full service place. That's just plain rude and TEN PERCENT IS GENEROUS FOR JUST BRINGING ME A PLATE! Lose a star for trying to guilt me otherwise

Yelp
The owner, Beth, has curated a lovely, on-trend space. It's perfect for the RAD (River Arts District) without being too Asheville "weird" (IYKYK). I loved it! She's also entirely likeable and greeted everyone thanking them for coming. I know biscuits are personal and everyone likes what they like. However, IMHO, these are classic & perfect. I'm not an early riser so I missed out on the daily special Plum hand pie so I opted for the menu staple: egg (soufflé) biscuit sandwich. It's got a burnt scallion "mayo on it with cheese. I can't do pork so I didn't add any meat. It was genuinely yum! Rich as heck though, and messy, so I resorted to open-faced fork & knife eating. Still Amazing. I'll def be bringing my people and maybe early enough to get a daily sweet special. :)

Yelp
OMG. Great food but this place could use a few more tables. Had the tomato gravy biscuit special. In a word YUM! Must try- be prepared to wait or stand.

Yelp
I'll start with the coffee as it was probably my favorite part. I got the miso caramel latte which was delicious and light! The coffee really had such a deep flavor but wasn't overwhelming. The biscuits were butter and del ious. It had a great consistency and the soufflé egg in the sandwich also had great flavor and texture. We also had the double chocolate chip cookie and it was delicious!! It's a cute little spot with cute art and great food
google avatar

Hadley E.

Yelp
Service, food, drink, and vibes were all great. I got the blueberry muffin cookie and the miso caramel latte. The cookie was soooo good!

Ross P.

Yelp
Dang this place is so good. I have stopped here the last two times when traveling for work, and the breakfast sandwich with sausage is just crazy crazy good. The owner is so nice, checks on how people are doing. Their Angeleno coffee is really refreshing as well. Definitely will be back

Carissa B.

Yelp
Butter Punk was delicious and such a fun vibe. Big crowds on the weekend, so plan to go when you're not in a rush. Great customer service and friendly staff! Highly recommend the herbal tea, Angeleno coffee, and BBLT with and without fried egg was excellent. These biscuits are unbelievably good, 10/10!

Yelp
New to block Butter Punk is crushing. Awards for best in scone and perfect coffees. We're asking ourselves how much butter can be in one biscuit. Everyone was super friendly and the place looks great.

Kiel P.

Yelp
Simply amazing, my wife and I went two days in a row during our visit to Asheville. They've cracked the code on biscuits!!

Rachel H.

Yelp
Best biscuits anywhere!!! Light, perfectly salted, buttery, crisp edges, and still fluffy. Hearty without being heavy. Cool vibe and friendly servers. Our party of 4 tried almost everything on the menu and it was all pitch perfect.

Allison M.

Yelp
The BEST coffee, cappuccino and bakery IN TOWN! Seriously, better grab what you can while you are still able! Beth's pastries are beyond amazing. The vibe is 100% AVL and sure to set your good mood for the whole day.

Eddie D.

Yelp
Best breakfast concept I have experienced in a decade. These ladies are doing it right.

Gary M.

Yelp
I've never been a huge fan of biscuits but Butter Punk has totally changed my opinion of them! I've never had a biscuit that has tasted this good in my life, and I'm not young! absolutely fabulous!!
