15 Most Anticipated Restaurants Across the Carolinas for Spring 2025 | Eater Carolinas

"Pastry chef Beth Kellerhals, better known as the "Queen of Biscuits," has amassed a following for her buttery, flaky creations; soon those pastries will be available at a set address in the River Arts District. The cafe will offer plenty of biscuit sandwiches as well as pastries and coffee. The project had been slated to open last fall, but damages from Hurricane Helene delayed it." - Erin Perkins

AMAZING FOOD AND SERVICE!! The owner was very nice and so were all the employees. The decor was adorable. I ordered the biscuits in mushroom gravy with sausage and a fried egg, absolutely delicious. The Angeleno coffee was perfect. Would definitely come back whenever I’m in Asheville.

We had some friends visiting from out of town and wanted to impress them with one of our newest and favorite breakfast spots, and Butter Punk did not disappoint. The atmosphere is hip and colorful with a fun energy that hits you the second you walk in. The staff was upbeat and welcoming, and the whole place feels creative without trying too hard. We each ordered something different so everyone could try a little variety. Every single dish was delicious and full of flavor, and we kept passing plates around because we wished we could have ordered everyone else’s choice too. The menu is inventive without being fussy and everything tastes fresh and thoughtfully made. Our friends were blown away and immediately said they want to come back on their next visit. If you want a breakfast spot that feels local and lively with food you keep thinking about long after you leave, this is it. We’re truly thankful that we’re local and can visit whenever we want.

Google
(Review based on a Saturday morning visit, between 8.50 and 9.50am) Pros: - Atmosphere: Cute cafe, well decorated and organised in a way that encourages mingling. - Food quality: Ordered a "breakfast sammie". Biscuit was delicious and the fluffy egg + sauce made a classic breakfast sandwhich stand up. - Cleanliness: Main service area and restrooms were noticeably well kept and clean. - Speed of service: From ordering, it took less than 15 minutes to receive the food. - Resources: Offers free menstruation products to patrons who need them. Cons: - Portion size-to-price relationship: Based only on the one item ordered, the portion size is significantly smaller than other comparable establishments (i.e. city bakery, BRBC) but priced at a higher point. - Sitting space: Contrary to other reviews, this space is not suitable for "all groups sizes". There are only two main tables that can accommodate parties larger than 3-4 people. Limited sitting space beyond this. - Menu availability: Menu options are reduced and the more popular drink items were not available.

Google
BUTTER PUNK. Best biscuits in town. Top tier coffee. Hard to find a place that can do both so well. Small menu but not at all boring or basic. OG breakfast sammie. BBLT. Miso caramel latte. Cold Brew!?!? All Incredible and executed at the highest level. The employees are so friendly and seem to be really enjoying themselves. A true gem.

Heather M.

Google
There was a line and a fair wait time to take your order. Sit wherever you can find space and you bus your own table. The mushroom gravy and biscuit was hearty and filling. Eclectic and fun decor.

Google
Hands down the best biscuits in Asheville! Would you like whipped butter or jam with that delicious biscuit? Umm, yes! The cheddar jalapeño biscuit was delicious as well. There are many choices for add ons to your biscuit so you can have it your favorite way! The inside of the building has character. There are cute little seating areas. Order at the counter, find a seat and when the buzzer calls you, go fetch your feast. Enjoy! More photos to come later!

Google
Not busy on a Monday morning. Got the caramel miso latte. Delish. The sandwich was to DIE for. Flies didn't bother me, but very small seating area with only a few tables, a big picnic-type table with benches, and a counter with low stools. Having a cane, they were easy to get on and off. You bus your own table. Put your order in and they give you a buzzer that vibrates when your order is ready. If I lived here, I'd be a regular. Really yummy biscuit, too!

Google
I have heard a lot of positive reviews about this place, and finally found the occasion to try it out today. I went simple, ordering the OG biscuit with soufflé egg and cheddar. I got it to go, and drove about 6 minutes to the house to eat it. What a beaut!! The egg was so fluffy and soft, my biscuit sandwich wiggled when I opened it! The biscuit is a good size, and has a lovely crust. The aioli has a great herbed flavor, and the sandwich was delicious! I will be back to try a bowl soon!

Yelp
Wow! I went in not knowing what to expect, I walked out after eating one of the best sandwiches ever: a biscuit, with candied bacon, lettuce and tomato jam. The biscuits were light and not buttery. Crisp on top and bottom. We were amazed. Go immediately. Located in the river district is cozy with eclectic decorations.

Yelp
Friendly and greetful service. You order at the register before claiming your seat! Grab a number and seating is family style. Clean and cutely punked out! I ordered the biscuits and mushroom gravy with sausage and egg. So Hardy and comforting. Homemade sausage has great flavor

Yelp
Dear my fellow southerners, Comfort zones are for weenies. Do not fear the mushroom gravy--it will not disappoint. Trust the chefs, they absolutely know what they're doing. Though the seating is limited, the service is speedy, warm, and there are thriving plants everywhere so I repeat: fear not. Give it a try, and I'll pray you get a good parking spot. Yours, A guy who did not love mushrooms (but does now)

Yelp
Butter Punk is a really cute spot to grab a coffee and/or breakfast. It was a plain butter bomb biscuit with jam and butter and an OJ for me and the biscuits n' mushroom gravy with an egg and a latte for my husband. The service, drinks and food were all really good. It was perfect for a quick stop on our way home from Asheville.

Lynn W.

Yelp
No decaf choices, no gluten Free choices, not very welcoming or Accommodating. Do not recommend.

Yelp
Stopped by while on a trip in Asheville. Solid spot for breakfast/coffee. The staff was kind and greeted us and didn't feel rushed to place our order. The biscuits themselves are very different from the traditional southern, fluffy or flaky biscuits. Still good, their recipe is a more crispy, crackly biscuit with sweetness to it if you are fan of that type. There are various seating arrangements but I wish it could have been a bit more organized. It's pretty much find your seat when you can - my party as well as two other couples that were waiting behind us were waiting for seats to open up. One table did, but the latest patrons that came in just so happened to be standing there and it kind of sucked they "jumped" all of our waits and took those seats. Outside of how seating is, good & unique place to try out. Would recommend.

Yelp
OMG this is by far the best biscuit I've had in my life. I honestly didn't want to stop here because I'm on a diet and didn't want biscuits. But this was the stop and I got the bblt which was omg delicious! The candied bacon. The tomato jam. The buttery biscuit. I ate every bite and even got a to go box with an extra biscuit to make tomorrow for breakfast along with a butternut squash scone and a double chip cookie (chocolate chips and potato chips) which I cannot wait to try. If you're reading this and deciding whether or not to stop, just do it. It's worth the carbs.

Yelp
Someone recommended Butter Punk to me as an amazing biscuit. It's a cute location in RAD with a good amount of seating and fun wall paper and little china plates. Overall I think I like my biscuits more fluffy and less crispy, but also the whole sandwich came off very fatty and greasy. The crispy on the biscuit comes from a bunch of butter (yeah I know it's in the name so you get what they tell you) but for me it was too much. The mayo spread they put on it kinda made that greasiness worse. I will say that the soufflé egg on it was phenomenal and I'd eat that alone. I also ordered that special hash brown and I didn't care for it either since it was 90% onion and 10% potato.

Yelp
Finally got to visit butter punk & I'm still dreaming about the biscuit I had. I got the OG breakfast sandwich with sage sausage. It had a homemade biscuit, aioli, a soufflé egg, sausage and cheese. YUM. I don't know what kind of magic they used to make the egg but holy cow it was perfect! Can't wait to go back!
google avatar

Meri A.

Yelp
Sooo tasty! Had the regular breakfast Sammie with candied bacon and it was perfection! Whatever kind of seasoning they added to the butter was so tasty and the biscuit had a perfectly cooked golden outer layer. There was a line to get in but it did go relatively quickly. Not a ton of seating inside but cute decor- very Instagram worthy! Staff was friendly enough but they just took your order and served food at the counter. Signs up to bus your own biscuit, I mean table. Definitely a new fave!

Yelp
Got here early on a Saturday morning, right before business picked up. The employees were friendly and the space was clean. I've never had a soufflé egg until Butter Punk and it was good! I was on the fence about the biscuits, because I like mine to be light skinned, respectfully. But don't worry, these biscuits have a good bite to them and are still soft in the middle. And the candied bacon whew, fire! Butter Punk you're on to something!

Yelp
We've got our normal go to breakfast spot whenever in the Asheville area, but this time wanted to try something new. Searching Yelp for breakfast recommendations near our hotel Butter Punk was one of the top suggestions with great reviews and mouth watering pictures. We arrived just after 10, there is no parking lot for this business, it's just on the main road in the River Arts District, so street parking is the only option. I didn't have to go too far, and was able to find a spot, and walked up to the restaurant to find a short line out the door. It was maybe a 20 minute wait until we were able to get in the door and place our orders at the counter and then we were given a buzzer to take a seat and await our food being ready. Seating is a bit limited, first come first serve, so the smaller your party is the easier you'll be able to find a table. Food came out after a short wait, but not bad at all considering how many people were there. I got the sausage egg and cheese biscuit! This thing was stacked high and I knew I wouldn't be able to unhinge my jaw to enjoy it, so grabbed a fork and knife and went a cleaner route consuming it. It was definitely a tasty breakfast and very filling. I'm glad we didn't go too early, or I may not have been able to eat the whole thing. The interior of Butter Punk is pretty eclectic with lots of bright art and patterns to give you some visual stimulation. The pricing is a bit high, but reasonable considering it's Asheville. Overall this spot definitely gives our usual spot a run for its money...I'm on the line about which is better, but this is one of my top 2 breakfast spots for sure! Their menu is a bit smaller than other spots, but the food is on point. I'm. Sure I'll be back on another visits.

Yelp
Staff was super friendly, I even got a visit from the sou Chef who happened to sit next to me during breakfast. They were very approachable and let me ask them questions. The biscuit was garnished with dill and I loved it! So I ask; why dill? And they said there's dill in the gravy! WOW! Would've never thought about that but ITS AMZING!! Also got the milk tea, which was delicious. This place is so good.. we went back for seconds in the same visit! We snagged brown butter pie and it's heavenly. I need to move down here bc it's so amazing. The inside was also very cute and cozy. Thanks Butter Punk

Yelp
Great food, amazing biscuit, best I have ever eaten. Definitely worth a visit if in the area.

Yelp
Beth Kellerhal and Dana Amromin have brought their distinctive, mouth-watering menu to RAD after earning high praise from prior food truck ventures to include Smorgasburg Los Angeles. At Butter Punk, their Butter Bomb Biscuits, among the best l've ever had, are featured in dishes to include the OG Breakfast Sammie with soufflé egg, cheddar and special mayo, and with a luscious mushroom gravy, served with paprika as well as fresh flat-leaf parsley and dill. Service is cheerful and welcoming; the eclectic ambiance gives a perfect artsy vibe.
google avatar

Yelp
Best biscuit EVER! And the eggs are like light soufflés nestled in between soft pillows of buttery goodness! We met the owner and she was as sweet as can be, all the locals knew her and she said hello to them all walking by as she was standing outside with us.
google avatar

Mary L.

Yelp
I was drawn to this restaurant due to a yelp review mentioning their sausage gravy with mushrooms as my husband is an avid fan of both gravy (of any kind but especially sausage gravy) and mushrooms so those two thing together had to be a hit! What we found was actually a delicious cream gravy with mushrooms (vegetarian and possibly vegan) that you could have sausage added to. This is not your grandmas biscuits and gravy but it's definitely uniquely tasty in its own way! The biscuits were fresh and you could see the hard work going into making them in the kitchen. The kitchen employees seemed to enjoy working together as a team which is always nice to see.
google avatar

Yelp
Excellent biscuit sandwiches and pastries! Inside is casual and cute. Service was prompt and staff was very friendly!
google avatar

Tonya P.

Yelp
Delicious biscuits piled high or a large plate of biscuits and gravy, whatever your heart desires. Come here for breakfast immediately. Super nice staff and delicious coffee. I can see me coming to Butter Punk every visit. Don't take my word for it. Go see for yourself. Sidenote, if you drink decaf coffee, you know how hard brewed decaf is to find. They have it!
google avatar

Allison M.

Yelp
Super delicious. New Little spot. Inside is very cute and well curated. I like that. It stays busy, but there is never a very long. Wait because they keep the menu simple. You are going here for a biscuit or a baked good and that's what you get, and it's gonna be a good one. Dan, but not too dense, buttery and flaky, but not too flaky (Can you really be too buttery?). The coffee is also delicious, and the workers are super kind. I do wish they had a vegetarian meat alternative.
google avatar

Kristin C.

Yelp
Love this new spot in RAD. Such a cool funky vibe inside and the biscuits are amazing. Such a nice crunchy biscuit and you have to try a pastry from the case. They rotate the options and the scones are seasonal. The blackberry scone with lemon glaze was really good. Go early, though. We got there right when it opened at 8 and it was starting to pick up when we left. About 2 hours later we passed by and there was a line out the door. Everyone in there is super friendly too!
google avatar

Jen D.

Yelp
The biscuits are very large and tasty- unfortunately they weren't warm (I was hoping for hot). There is an up charge for butter and jam that was ok. Hubby got a breakfast biscuit that was delicious. The candied bacon was good. Hubby had drip coffee and I had the cafe au lait. Smaller mugs than I expected but still good. The staff was friendly, decor is quirky, bathroom is clean, and there was just short wait for a table and food. There is parking on the street as well as a lot.
google avatar

Yelp
What a place to grab breakfast at holy cow was it tasty. Get the OG breakfast sandwich and a slice of pie lines out the door Sunday.

Yelp
Is 5 stars really the highest rating I can give? Maybe they need to add a few more for places like this. This new women-owned biscuit bakery in Asheville's Upper River Arts District (RAD) is truly amazing and one-of-a-kind. From the interesting interior decor, to the fantastic, friendly service to the incredible food and coffee, innovative places like this are exactly what the RAD needs to usher in its recovery from last year's devastating hurricane Helene and its historic flooding. The biscuits here are without a doubt the best biscuits I've ever had. Sorry, Biscuit Head, there's no contest here. Not even my grandma's biscuits were this good. They are ample sized, golden brown and crispy on the outside and white and flaky on the inside. We had them as breakfast biscuit sammies with egg and cheese, and one with added candied bacon. Both were super good and enough for a filling breakfast before a walk along the French Broad River greenway. Their coffee is excellent as well. Prices are inline with portion size and quality of the food. We got a beautiful fresh strawberry scone with a sumac glaze to go. Haven't tried it yet, but I'm already looking forward to having it tomorrow morning for breakfast with some additional strawberries from our garden. We will definitely be back to try their biscuits with mushroom gravy and their other baked treats. It's also our new go-to coffee spot when in the RAD. UPDATE: The strawberry scone we got to go was almost as good as the biscuits, which, as I noted in my original review above, are hands down THE BEST BISCUITS EVER.

Gloria M.

Yelp
Very welcoming! Food was delicious! Had the mushroom sausage biscuits and gravy. Also shared a Earl Gray Pistachio scone. Heavenly!
google avatar

Suzanne T.

Yelp
The word is out now, so go early! Another delicious monster biscuit, this time not drenched in melted butter.

Shae D.

Yelp
Such a cute breakfast spot in the River Arts District. Their Miso Caramel Latte was the best latte I've ever had!
google avatar

Penny D.

Yelp
This place is super cute and the food and coffees are delicious! My husband and I got the breakfast biscuit sandwich and we both loved it! We typically don't even like biscuits, but these were great. We got the caramel miso coffees and those were wonderful too.
google avatar

GoodGravy W.

Yelp
Underrated and delicious. Crispy biscuit bottom, amazing flavor. I always get the sausage egg and cheese. This time I also go a blondie and chocolate chip cookie - they never miss!
google avatar

Kyna M.

Yelp
The owner, Beth, has curated a lovely, on-trend space. It's perfect for the RAD (River Arts District) without being too Asheville "weird" (IYKYK). I loved it! She's also entirely likeable and greeted everyone thanking them for coming. I know biscuits are personal and everyone likes what they like. However, IMHO, these are classic & perfect. I'm not an early riser so I missed out on the daily special Plum hand pie so I opted for the menu staple: egg (soufflé) biscuit sandwich. It's got a burnt scallion "mayo on it with cheese. I can't do pork so I didn't add any meat. It was genuinely yum! Rich as heck though, and messy, so I resorted to open-faced fork & knife eating. Still Amazing. I'll def be bringing my people and maybe early enough to get a daily sweet special. :)
google avatar

Dana M.

Yelp
Stop whatever you are doing and get over to Butter Punk. The biscuits are some of the best I've ever tasted and the jam? Amazing. This place is super cute, super small and women owned. Watching them stir up a batch while eating our breakfast was super cool. Limited seating but totally worth it. Can't wait to go back and try another pastry.

Lyla R.

Yelp
It was amazing super nice atmosphere and the food was really good. Best biscuits ever it came pretty quickly and the butter was really yummy. I got the egg and biscuit sandwich. It was really good and the sauce was fired.
google avatar

Jennifer B.

Yelp
This location is very curly decorated. My biscuit was amazing. Coffee was OK. The service was very slow. I finished my biscuit before my coffee was ever ready.
google avatar

Jodi T.

Yelp
For not being a biscuit person, I absolutely love these! Best in the area and of all I've ever tried...Crunchy on the outside, fluffy and buttery on the inside and not too dense. We went today around noon and they were out of all the pastries, scones and biscuits. We had to wait for them to make more biscuits but it was worth it. Their homemade jams are also delicious. I am not a fan of the taste of their homemade sausage but that's just personal preference, the bacon on the sandwich I enjoyed better. Next time will try their mushroom gravy, if you like biscuits you absolutely need to support this local business!

Asheville H.

Yelp
Um. Yeah. Believe the hype. Go get yourself some biscuits and mushroom gravy... Trust me.

Kathryn L.

Yelp
Great spot! Definitely busy on a Sunday around lunch time, so a bit tough to find seating. The daily special was delicious: biscuits with sausage gravy and a fried egg. I also ordered an ice vanilla latte and it was perfect, I think they make their own vanilla syrup (didn't taste artificial like many places).
google avatar

Muffy F.

Yelp
It's a biscuit place kind of like hole is a donut place. Completely next level. Had sausage egg biscuit and shot of gravy. Really perfect in every way. Yet another one that seems to think standing in line to order getting your own silver napkins water condiments and bussing your own table warrants the same tip structure as a full service place. That's just plain rude and TEN PERCENT IS GENEROUS FOR JUST BRINGING ME A PLATE! Lose a star for trying to guilt me otherwise
google avatar

Shawn B.

Yelp
My partner & tried Butter Punk today after a few missed opportunities. Lovely ambience but the food was disappointing after all the hype we have both read. The service was nice and everyone was extremely personable. I ordered a vanilla latte which was perfect but the biscuits were disappointing . I had an egg and bacon biscuit , the bacon was delicious savoury with a slight maple flavour . The egg had an odd texture and was almost like a soufflé not a pleasant mouthful. My partner ordered a biscuit with mushroom gravy which was more like a stew rather than a gravy. I understand there are vegetarians but it would be nice to have a traditional sausage gravy. Just my humble opinion. Overall a decent experience which could be much better with some tweaks.
google avatar

H M.

Yelp
OMG. Great food but this place could use a few more tables. Had the tomato gravy biscuit special. In a word YUM! Must try- be prepared to wait or stand.

avang s.

Yelp
I'll start with the coffee as it was probably my favorite part. I got the miso caramel latte which was delicious and light! The coffee really had such a deep flavor but wasn't overwhelming. The biscuits were butter and del ious. It had a great consistency and the soufflé egg in the sandwich also had great flavor and texture. We also had the double chocolate chip cookie and it was delicious!! It's a cute little spot with cute art and great food

Camryn L.

Yelp
Best breakfast sandwich of my life. It was busy with a line out the door but we got our food pretty quick. Can't wait to go back
google avatar

Hadley E.

Yelp
Service, food, drink, and vibes were all great. I got the blueberry muffin cookie and the miso caramel latte. The cookie was soooo good!
google avatar

Graham C.

Yelp
New to block Butter Punk is crushing. Awards for best in scone and perfect coffees. We're asking ourselves how much butter can be in one biscuit. Everyone was super friendly and the place looks great.

Carissa B.

Yelp
Butter Punk was delicious and such a fun vibe. Big crowds on the weekend, so plan to go when you're not in a rush. Great customer service and friendly staff! Highly recommend the herbal tea, Angeleno coffee, and BBLT with and without fried egg was excellent. These biscuits are unbelievably good, 10/10!

Debbie J.

Yelp
Exceptional biscuits. Limited seating and noisy but well worth it. Would have liked multiple flavors of jams and jellies. Local molasses would be a perfect addition.

Ross P.

Yelp
Dang this place is so good. I have stopped here the last two times when traveling for work, and the breakfast sandwich with sausage is just crazy crazy good. The owner is so nice, checks on how people are doing. Their Angeleno coffee is really refreshing as well. Definitely will be back

Kiel P.

Yelp
Simply amazing, my wife and I went two days in a row during our visit to Asheville. They've cracked the code on biscuits!!

Allison M.

Yelp
The BEST coffee, cappuccino and bakery IN TOWN! Seriously, better grab what you can while you are still able! Beth's pastries are beyond amazing. The vibe is 100% AVL and sure to set your good mood for the whole day.

Rachel H.

Yelp
Best biscuits anywhere!!! Light, perfectly salted, buttery, crisp edges, and still fluffy. Hearty without being heavy. Cool vibe and friendly servers. Our party of 4 tried almost everything on the menu and it was all pitch perfect.
