Next Gen Indian Is the Most Exciting Food Movement in Toronto

"A homey yet theatrical College Street neighborhood restaurant where the chef treats every plate as a story blending nostalgia and creativity. The Dhokla exemplifies this ethos: a delicate savory sponge cake that soaks up the tang of tamarind-date chutney, the freshness of achari-mint chutney, and a touch of sweetness from kesar (saffron) yogurt, delivering a balanced interplay of cool, tangy, and sweet." - Shinan Govani

It was a casual visit, and I was pleasantly surprised by the quality of the food. Since it wasn’t a planned outing, we ordered some basics — and the *Delhiwala Butter Chicken* turned out to be one of the best I’ve had in recent times. Unlike many places that serve plain boiled chicken chunks, this dish was thoughtfully prepared and reminded me a bit of Chicken Tikka Masala. Overall, the food was excellent. However, the place felt a bit cramped, and accessibility might be an issue — there’s no elevator, and the stairs are steep and poorly lit. While they seem to aim for a fine dining ambiance, better lighting in the common areas would definitely enhance the experience.

Very friendly and lovely Personal. Fancy cocktails at the bar. The food was the best Indian food I tried. If I am back in Toronto I will surely come back again.

good place. expensive but has some uniqueness to it. the sabudana vada chat was excellent. the dal bukhara was rich in flavor and certainly worth trying, although I wish it was less creamy and more in lentils. the mango lassi was excellent. the breads were good too but had ghee/butter on them by default which I don't generally like.

Stopped in here from out of town for lunch as part of a group of 4. Staff was incredibly helpful and friendly, a beautiful platter lunch for each of us including a little dessert was great value. Food was all delicious, atmosphere was 10/10. Would absolutely return, one of the best Indian restaurants we’ve been to.

Amazing Indian place close to the fort York area. Food is awesome, service is amazing as well. We ordered Pani Puri, peanut tikki, Shaadi waale chhole, bhindi do pyaaza, and the kulfi for dessert. Everything was amazing. Highly recommend this place!

**Tradition Meets Genius on a Plate** Michelin got it right! ByAanch isn’t just a meal—it’s a love letter to Indian cuisine, reimagined with Michelin-starred finesse. Every dish feels like a conversation between old traditions and bold, modern creativity. The flavors? Familiar yet thrillingly unexpected. The **Dhuaan Wala Kala Murg** stole the show—tender, smoky, and draped in Indian spices. The **Chicken Tikka Queche** was a proof that innovation doesn’t have to erase heritage. Dessert was pure magic too: *Kheer in White Wine Pear**. Even the cocktails, like the **Mango Bunta**, balanced spice and sweetness like a perfectly tuned raga. The ambiance? Warm and sober, with earthy tones—no pretension, just soul. The staff? Very kind and passionate, guided us through the menu. **Price:** 💸💸(Worth every penny!) **Vibe:** ✨ Timeless yet groundbreaking. **Return?** Absolutely 💯

Incredible experience eating here with 2 of my friends. The food is amazing, you can tell that they’re using quality ingredients and aren’t cutting any corners. The flavours are just out of this world and deeply nourishing. The service was excellent! Very genuine staff who were welcoming, humble, very helpful. Atmosphere is lovely. Nice music, great decor. I ate here as a vegan and was just blown away by the flavours and selection. Definitely a new favourite spot of mine!!

During the Little Italy festival, we always look forward to By Aanch’s booth and we always say, we should come here for a full meal. 2 years later and we finally stopped by and we are kicking ourselves for not coming sooner. We ordered off the patio menu which has really fun and creative Indian dishes. Everything we got was amazing. The shots and the samosas are our favourites during the festival so we had to get them. Staff was super friendly and helpful too. Everything was jam packed with flavour. We will definitely be back!

Yelp
This spot is literally ! By Aanch is a sister restaurant to the Michelin-recognized Aanch, with theatrical interpretations of modern Indian dishes. We fell in love with the beautiful presentation and delicious dishes, all packed with tons of flavour! We tried the: - Papad chaat - each crispy cone was filled with bhelpuri chaat, aloo chaat, corn chaat, or masal peanut chaat - Chicken tikka quiche - tandoori chicken chunks and a tomato-onion salsa served in tart shells - Kadhai chicken: chicken in a stew base - Yellow Dal Fry: lentil stew - Plain naan and lachha parantha (flakey bread - this was so good to dip in the stews) - Chocolate Kulfi bomb: the presentation was phenomenal Contained mango kulfi inside. Uses sambuca liquor that is set on fire during serving. If you like spiked desserts - this one might be for you! - Rose Lassi: rose yogurt drink - Mango Bunta: mango soda with some masala spices Put By Aanch down the next time you're feeling Indian food - the dishes Chef Sudhanshu Kumar are perfection and we were honestly full just after the two appetizers and brought most of the mains home

Yelp
I visited this spot since I like the original location on Wellington. Overall the food was okay and it is priced extremely high. For these prices, I would expect fine dining and better quality of food. I would not recommend this restaurant.

Yelp
My recent dining experience at By Aanch left me utterly impressed and delighted. From the moment I stepped inside, I was captivated by the trendy ambiance, seamlessly blending modern decor with subtle Indian touches. The atmosphere set the perfect stage for what was to come. As a lover of Indian street food, I was excited to try their innovative creations. The Sabudana Vada Chaat was a standout dish, perfectly combining the crispy texture of the sabudana vada with the vibrant flavors of traditional chaat, creating a symphony of tastes that danced on my palate. Another fusion marvel was the Chicken Tikka Trio. Throughout the meal, the service was impeccable, with attentive staff members ensuring that every need was met promptly and courteously. Whether you're a fan of traditional Indian cuisine or looking to explore new culinary horizons, this restaurant is a must-visit. I left with a contented heart and a craving to return soon for another delightful fusion feast.

Yelp
We went to Aanch - Modernistic Indian Cuisine on the recommendation of our host, Ricky at the Toronto Hilton & had a great experience. The food was as good & authentic as anything we've eaten on our many trips to India. We had a couple glasses of excellent wine along with the Mulligatawny soup to start. It was thinner consistency than we were accustom to but great flavor. We shared an order of Naan bread, rice & Butter Chicken that was perfect! We have another 3-days in Toronto and may go back again before we leave the city. Great service and pleasant atmosphere.

Yelp
Very Delicious!, generous portions! attentive staff! Their lunch deal is great and today really enjoyed both the rogan josh and the sweet and sour pumpkin. Good mix of opuions for vegetarian and meat/fish eaters. The server we had was very kind but a bit too soft spoken so it was a little difficult to interact. The food was arranged really nicely but the platters took a bit too much space on the table... With a few tweaks they should showcase the excellent food even better!
