Where to Eat Brazilian Food Around D.C. | Eater DC

"Though its açai bowls are popular, you can expect an assortment of Brazilian snacks and desserts at this cozy cafe-supermarket hybrid. The counter is split by sweet and savory options — one side displaying ornate miniature confections like brigadeiros (chocolate truffles covered in sprinkles) and coconut-y quindim custard while the other side is stacked with handheld staples such as kibe (derived from Levantine kibbeh) and risoles (croquettes). Grab a mix of food and a Guaraná soda to round everything out." - Kris Martins

Since moving to VA, it's been hard for us to find a good Brazilian grocery store. We searched and found 'By Brazil' in a small strip Mall in Wheaton, MD what a relief. We went there twice to stock up on goodies and the long drive is worth it. The store is very super clean, with shelves well very organized and labeled. The staff are fully bilingual, friendly, helpful and professional, also the uniforms are clean. You'll find a lot of Brazilian imported products at reasonable prices considering they are imported and came a long way. Also cafe and bakery are in one place. They have "Pão de Queijo", the famed snack Brazilian cheese bread, made of tapioca flour, milk, eggs, olive oil and stuffed with cheese. It's even gluten free. They also have: * "Pastéis", a fried pastry stuffed with meat * Delicious "coxinha", a dense fried dumpling stuffed with chicken * Refreshing and authentic "Açaí Bowl" with fresh fruit toppings, dusted with powdered milk, just like it's done in Brazil There are various brazilian sweet style desserts: * "Brigadeiro"- chocolate balls covered with chocolate sprinkles. * "Beijinho"- sweetened condensed milk, with coconut flakes and butter. * Puddings - cakes in various flavors. Anyway it's a great authentic place to try out. If you're missing a little bit of Brazil, that's a good place to visit.

Our family drives 1hr to eat our favorite "coxinha" and take home various authentic brazilian items and many gifts. Costumers for over 10yrs we love the renovations and the variety offered. The store looks always clean, organized, and the customer service is always amazing! Absolutely recommended. Obrigado By Brazil!

Google
This place is amazing! The staff is super friendly, the food is amazing, and I am impressed with the variety of products they have! If you are in Area, or even if you need to travel, it is worth the visit! I only gave 5 stars because I cannot give more than that. I loved this place!

Aimêe Mothé

Google
The best Brazilian market in the DMC area. There's a variety of products and the prices are incredible! You also can find delicious salgados such as coxinhas, pão de queijo, pastel etc to eat in the store and have a break before going home. If you're Brazilian, you're gonna love it and kill some of the saudade from home. If you're not Brazilian but are curious about our food, I definitely recommend going to By Brazil and try some of the salgados on the counter ;)

Google
Clean place and very friendly staff. Wide diversity of Brazilians' grocery goods and great Brazilian food.

Google
Excellent market. It is possible to find products from Brazil. I bought rice, tapioca, cheese bread, Impala enamel... I missed Brazilian products. It has a snack bar with Brazilian snacks like coxinha. It has açaí. ❤️🇧🇷 The service is very good.

Yelp
A wonderful find -- in a strip mall in Wheaton. This is a Brazilian grocery store with a cafe/bakery all in one space. I ended up wandering over to this place while my family was waiting for our lunch at a nearby restaurant. I had a hankering for pão de queijo, a famed snack in Brazil made out of tapioca flour, milk, eggs, olive oil and stuffed with cheese. If you're gluten-free, this is the snack for you! After our lunch at the restaurant nearby, my family and I walked back over. The kids of course had to get more food! They both wanted the Pastéis (a fried pastry stuffed with meat). Even though I was still full, I still ordered a Coxinha (a dense fried dumpling stuffed with chicken). This is not a Weight Watchers day! Before we left, we decided to pick up some desserts to take to a party later that night. We ordered 8 Brigadeiro (chocolate balls covered with chocolate sprinkles). Our friends said they tasted just like a giant tootsie roll! We also got 2 cups filled with what looked like chocolate pudding and cake. Our kids picked that out. We were all so full by the end!

Yelp
The coxinhas are a bit dried out. 3/5. Pasteles probably a better buy but nothing is made fresh to order other than açaí bowls maybe. Fresh squeezed orange juice for $4. 5/5 Food offerings 2/5. Dessert offerings 4/5. Brazilian market is a solid 5/5. Clean and modern looking place, with ample tables and chairs. Friendly service.

Yelp
Best acai bowl I've ever had. All the ingredients are fresh and flavorful. I actually got the cup and it's more than enough, very generous with their sides. The empanadas are so amazingly flaky but still some crunch. I could eat the breading alone. The beef filling was ok, a lil dry, would like cheese with it maybe. They do offer some good free sauces though. Staff are super friendly and always smiling. Nice environment to sit and eat also if you want to.

Yelp
I come here occasionally with our Au Pair who is from Brazil. We have a great experience each time since she is able to find food that we have not seen selling anywhere else so far. We are able to stock up on a bunch of Brazilian treats for our home! I love learning about the different food that they have here too! Some things that I recommend you try at By Brazil: cheesy bread, hearts of palm, suco concentrado passionfruit flavored, guarana soda, yoki farofa, and their bakery items. The staff here are nice. Besides groceries they do make pastries and acai.

Richard G.

Yelp
I'm an American, married to a Brazilian (yes, I won the happiness lottery), and we typically go here every weekend. We appreciate the staff. They are helpful and friendly, and we look forward to seeing them. Our favorite snacks are the pão de queijo (the best I've had), the risoles de camarão, and the coxinhas. The coffee is good too. We especially like it when they play Brazilian music. There's also a nice little shop with lots of imported products from Brazil. The price of the picanha is currently 6.99/lb for the Australian beef and I think 7.99/lb for the American beef. Those are very good prices. If you're having trouble, finding parking, there's a parking lot around the corner on University Ave, and Elkin Street, behind the Dollar Store. Lots of spaces there. This family-owned business recently celebrated its 25th anniversary. I just hope they're around for another 25 years.

Yelp
They are very helpful in finding what you need, and advising best product to use. Every time I have gone there they are well stocked.

Yelp
Really good stop for Brazilian groceries and authentic açaí bowls. Don't get honey like me, get yours with condensed or powdered milk like a real Brazilian!

Yelp
Great food! Great service! Great ambient! The coxinhas are amazing. I wish they had pao de sal, but still love it!

Yelp
Um pedacinho do Brasil em Maryland. Amei tudo. Morando há quatro anos nos Estados Unidos, fiquei até emocionada ao encontrar chá matte Leão, sabonete Phebo e goiabada.

Yelp
Yummmmmy!! We visited this Brazilian gem and fell in love with the food served. The staff was very helpful and took the time to explain about their food. Most of the customers were speaking Portuguese, the staff was fully bilingual and courteous. I can even say, they were happy!! Do not miss visiting By Brazil. They also have a small market with Brazilian products.

Yelp
We live over on the Virginia side in Arlington so it's not often we make it over to this area. But when we are here, we make sure to stop by since there are some items they have here fresher/in greater supply than at European Foods Import/Export ... or the nearby Las Americas market around the corner. The most common items we make sure to pick up here: - More options of snacks and desserts, including imported Pé de Moleque or the fresh Pão de Mel you can get at the register - Various brands and genres of condiments and sauces, including molho de tomate from Elefante and Pomarola - A wider and fresher selection of breakfast and snack items, including Piraquê crackers and Pão de Queijo with Catupiry It's pretty cramped in here with how busy it gets, but to their credit the recent renovation (i.e. clearing and brightening up the main seating area) has improved things by leaps and bounds. I wouldn't recommend most of the salgadinhos -- they're edible but nothing special -- and parking here can be a nightmare sometimes. But for stocking up your pantry, this place has nearly everything you're looking for and is well worth the occasional trip.

Rafaela D.

Yelp
i honestly love coming here, there's a huge variety of brazilian goods to choose/eat/buy from, the açaí tastes good and there's a cute place to sit and eat there if you want, and i love this place for this! however the customer service is truly bad. i've been treated bad and rude by the staff, same with my mom, even if you talk to them in a good mood and politely they'll treat you with a sassy attitude. they won't say you're welcome or even a hello back most of the time (of course this doesn't apply to ALL staff, but for the majority) hopefully this will change in the future.

Yelp
What a cute little store!!! What a little cute store!!! What a store cute little! It looked like everything was so clean and new, so I was like "When did you guys open?". And then the cashier was like.. " 14 years ago"... "Store cute little a what?!" So we got a few pastries... all of which involved condensed milk... and all of which tasted a lot like condensed milk. We also got this sweet cornbread cake thing that was under a cloche (one of my favorite words- cloche)... and they have free mini cups of espresso style coffee that you can take. A bunch of brazilian products, including but not limited too, sandals, cookies, shampoo, etc. A ton of seating! Much more than you would think. Everyone was very nice. Definitely a family run operation. I'll definitly be back!

Yelp
Really awful. We love Brazilian food. This was just awful The chicken pastel was probably from the day before (we went at 5.00pm). Very dry and stale. The coxinha was old too and what made it worse was that it was cold almost frozen in the middle. To top it off the people were unfriendly. Maybe they just had a bad day. I'll never be going there again.

Yelp
This place is a hidden gem! I am obsessed with their açaí bowls. The bowl is filled to the brim with delicious açaí and topped with granola, honey, bananas and strawberries. Unlike other açaí places I have tried, they give you so much açaí. Also they have two different sizes ( cup and bowl). I legit get this at least once a week.

T. P.

Yelp
Quaint shop, staff was friendly. I came here to buy conditioner. There's a store side & a restaurant/cafe side
google avatar

Yelp
Came in for the Açaí bowl, and it's probably the best I've ever had! The staff is super friendly and accommodating. I didn't want banana in my bowl because I have an allergy, and they were quick to find an equally delicious substitute! Highly recommend for anyone lookingn to get an acai bowl or even just looking for local Brazilian foods!
google avatar

Lady Phade 1.

Yelp
They might have a decent tasting acai bowl but for the price ($12) I would at LEAST expect the few strawberries, bananas and granola on top to be organic. I mean strawberries are the #1 most heavily chemically treated fruit..Just sayin though..the price is a bit steep. I used to live in San Diego, Ca where I would buy a huge and I mean HUGE (enough for 3 people) vegan acai bowl topped with all kinds of organic berries and the best granola I have ever tasted - everything organic down to the granola for $8 and it was right by the beach!

Yelp
Gadzooks! I would have never gone inside this place if it wasn't for a mate at my Brazilian jiujitsu class (at Bartman MMA up the street). She happens to be Brazilian and recommended we try some authentic Brazilian bites after our Brazilian training, so we tailgated there. I think I had driven by four times a week and never knew what was inside. This storefront is so modest you'd never know inside they have a fresh baked deli/bakery section, small retail shop, small grocery mart, and brazilian film/music selection. I recommend their coffee, cheese bread (which they also have a frozen version to take and bake), and ACAI bowls. Get there at least 30 minutes before closing so they have time to make an ACAI bowl for you, because they are made to order. They take the fresh acai fruit and scrape it out and grind it down, pour it in a bowl, covered with sliced bananas, brazilian honey, and granola. Gawd it is soo good, and refreshing, it's like eating a smoothie :)
google avatar

Yelp
I've never been schooled with Brazilian food, so I'm not sure about the rest of the goods here, but I do know how much I love grabbing bags of frozen pao de queijo home whenever I'm in the area. Don't know what pao de quejio is? Cheese balls from heaven - light, fluffy, and not overally cheesy. They always have fruit smoothies (that I will one day order) and hot baked goodies; I've been a fatty multiple times and taken home frozen pao de queijo And baked ones to eat on the car ride home). Downsides: Parking and checkout. Almost never any parking and it must be a (Brazilian) thing to take your time and talk for 10 minutes to each customer; I'm more of an in-and-out-grab-your-things-and-go kinda person.
google avatar

Yelp
I volunteered in Bahia for 3 months. Ate everything under the sun! This place allows you to recreate your fave authentic meals and they even have a wide variety of Brazilian pickled chili's and hot sauces that I thought I would never see again! Great Açaí as well
google avatar

Christian B.

Yelp
I was craving pao de queijo so I took my daughter to check out the store. I've driven by it a million times but never gone in. The store is much larger then it looks on the outside. We browsed around at the frozen goods (empanadas, pigs in a blanket, etc.) but I couldn't find the pao de queijo. I asked a staff member and she smiled and pointed to a whole freezer dedicated to them! There were 3-4 different brands. I picked out a big bag and also bought one fresh to share with my daughter. Very tasty! We went home and baked a few and they hit the spot! I'd like to come back and try an acai bowl or some pastries.
google avatar

Kalki K.

Yelp
This place has some great, authentic products. I needed to find some high-quality Hearts of Palm (palmitos) for a salad and they delivered! They have 3 or 4 different sizes and I went with the big 32oz can. Delicious! I'll be back.
google avatar

Anival G.

Yelp
Great authentic place ! This is all you're looking for and more ! Have a wide variety and staff is very friendly.

Yelp
Today was my first time in there after passing it for years and wondering what it was. I decided to pop in and bought a variety of savory stuff from the bakery. Everything was delicious, but the pastel de frango (chicken pies) were SO GOOD. I could've seriously eaten 3-4 more of them. I will definitely be back.

Jenny F.

Yelp
They have lived in Brazil for several years and I was so happy to find so many groceries in there, I have been missing. Everything is imported, but for that, the prices are actually ok. The staff is super friendly and I love that they have sweets and snacks (doces e salgadinhos) as well as fresh juices, just like in Brazil! It seems like a small store with a lanchonete dentro.
google avatar

Jennifer B.

Yelp
My daughter and I came for an açaí bowl and we were very happy. The bowl was fresh and flavorful. We shared the bowl and it was enough for 2. We will be returning soon!

Yelp
I love acai bowls. This place is great to curve that craving. Love this place. The quick bites to eat are delicious.
google avatar

Yelp
I had a great experience at By Brazil this morning. I was craving an acai bowl and I am so happy I chose to get one from By Brazil. It was so delicious and perfect for a hot day. I also loved the bananas, strawberries, granola, and honey that were on top of the acai bowl. The staff was also very nice and I can't wait to come back.
google avatar

Kelso L.

Yelp
By far the best acai bowl I have ever had. Can't find anything as authentic or comparable even in NY or LA. Love this local gem.

Marianne F.

Yelp
This shop is cozy but seems to have all the essentials from flours to shampoo, condiments and sausages! The staff could answer my question right and was very happy here. This is now our designated shop for Brazilian/ Portuguese groceries!
google avatar

Nicole L.

Yelp
It was somewhat of a weird store but with all things Brazilian. A small grocery section, a small cafe, a video store and even a rack for perfume. I was excited to find the sweet Manioc starch for pao de queijo it's would be exciting to make with authentic brazilian taipoca starch. I checked out the food warmer where there were a selection of doughy pastry we selected a couple of pastry filled with chicken and I asked if they had pao de queijo at the store they made it much bigger in size so I didnt recognize it. It turned out as expected too much gooey starch on the inside when it's too big in size. We also wanted to try the acai item. I pointed at the photo honestly I had no idea what it was. The lady took a long time to make it. It was a acai smoothie topped with sliced bananas, strawberries and honey. It was da bomb! It was that good it deserved 4-stars.
google avatar

Yelp
You Should Check It Out In this area there isn't much of a Brazilian community. I met a Brazilian girl in a class I was taking, and I asked her where I could get some Guarana. I love that stuff. She mentioned this place. It's a tiny little supermarket type place that sells Brazilian foods. It's not even a supermarket. It's maybe a small-sized 7-11 type store. When you first walk in they have music CDs displayed. Then they have a lot of Brazilian products. I went right to the cooler where I got a couple of cans of Guarana. They have some warm ready-to-eat foods. I asked the lady to get me whichever is the best. I let her pick it out. It was like an empanada shredded chicken wrapped in dough, but there was something else in there like cheese or something. Whatever it was, it was pretty good. I'm kicking myself right now because I didn't try the pao de quejo cheese bread. I heard that the Brazilian cheese bread is pretty good. I'll make sure I get that next time.
google avatar

Ger D.

Yelp
Came in for an açaí bowl after hiking on a hot day. Yelp led me Used to California açaí bowls that are 6-8 dollars so was surprised to see the $11.99 for a regular bowl. Place was empty but I was 3rd in line? (Maybe you can call in orders or they also make for the restaurant around the corner). I did get a smoothie sample while I waited which was nice. Pleasant staff and clean store.

C C.

Yelp
I tried coxinha and cheese bread and they are delicious. There are plenty of brazilian products and the prices are ok.
google avatar

Day J.

Yelp
My favorite place to go enjoy Brazilian foodies.. My favorite is "Pao de queijo" (cheese bread). I love it!!
google avatar

Fatima R.

Yelp
Just discovered this place today when looking for açaí bowls near me. I always passed by it not having a clue that it was a Brazilian market and smoothie bar. (You have to walk inside to see this) But I had the best Açaí bowl! It only comes in one size and is actually large enough for two people. Very friendly employees. It's definitely a hidden gem!

B R.

Yelp
This place has the biggest pao de quejo I have ever seen! Same goes for the coxinha, both served piping hot. The cafe space inside is cute, which you might not expect from the exterior, and the dessert selections are really cute, hand-made with little decorations. Fun selection of Brazilian products from Haivanas to frozen açaí. Worth checking out!

Yelp
American by Birth, Brasileiro by choice I had to come here. I a feeling that I had been missing out on By Brazil so I bookmarked it until I could the trek way up to Wheaton-Silver Spring. I love Brazil, problems and all. It is my home away from home. But I must say that the food isn't what does it for me. Street food says a lot about a place and the street food in Brazil just isn't that good in my opinion. Great churros but outside of that, not too def. Now, the thing I loved most about Brazilian cuisine is the Açai Bowls. By Brazil was my first foray Stateside into the pool of Açai. I found the staff the staff to nice and helpful. Everyone spoke Portuguese and though I am far from fluent they let me do my thing so that was good. Placing my order for an Açai Bowl I also got Pao de Queijo. Pao de Queijo is one of those salgados(snacks) that I am not too big one but I recognize so I guess I had too. The Pao de Queijo was up to Brazilian standards. Much better than the Yoki brand mix that I've tried. It took a little while for the Açai bowl to be ready. I wasn't in a rush and I was fine with the conversations and the television playing the news in Portuguese. It really took me back to so many breakfasts had in Brazil, the land of Order and Progress. After awhile the bowl came. It is a great size to share with someone. It comes with bananas, strawberries, granola and honey. I found the main event to be solid. Not like I fell it love with but solid. Definitely good enough for a return visit. I just don't know when that will be. In sum, the Açai Bowl was $13.00 in Wheaton-Silver Spring. But what price point would I suggest? No idea. I do think I will try to Coxinhas next time. I forgot I liked them more than the Pao de Queijo. If you are brave enough to order in Portuguese, be careful how you pronounce "pao" because "pau" is something else. I'm stunting. I'll stop.
google avatar

Dalia F.

Yelp
Best Acai bowls ever better than jamba or anyother place. It's clean, and all the food is delicious, the staff is so friendly and sweet. You have to come and try this place.
google avatar

Michael W.

Yelp
Nice selection of Brazilian goodies. I go there specially for the frozen "pao de queijo" (cheese buns) and farofa (toasted and seasoned yuca flour) which I'm addicted to. Of course, once there, I can't resist drinking a can of Guaraná (Brazilian soda) and eating a few Brazilian snacks: coxinhas (deep fried breaded pastries) and pastéis (some sort of salty churros). If you ever need to find some ingredient for a feijoada (baked black beans with salted pork) or another Brazilian recipe, or just miss eating some of the goodies you used to eat in Brazil (ex. goaibada, queijo minas, linguiça calabreza etc), this is the place.
google avatar

Aleya A.

Yelp
Great pastries. The BEST acai bowl you'll get in the DC area and the staff in friendly. They do make the acai bowls fresh per order so give them about 10min and enjoy a pastry or browse while you wait. They have a small dining area.
google avatar

Gaby F.

Yelp
So many delicious Brazilian favorites to try. Love this place and the people working there. Being Brazilian, I've been going there since I was little and my mom would take us to get a coxinha and guarana. Now I take all my American friends and they always want to come back for more
google avatar

Ana G.

Yelp
This was the nastiest Brazilian Bakery I have ever been to...the pao de queijo was awful and the coxinhas were cold, when I complained about it, the owner warmed it up in the microwave, it was just disgusting...First and last time there!!!

Edison G.

Yelp
I think it is a great place not only for good jenuine brazilian food, but it has a wonderful variety of products from Brazil you can not find anywhere else. The staff is very friendly and I love the little atmosfere they have... Highly recommended...

margarita u.

Yelp
I was looking where to get azeite de dende and after reading about their snacks, I immediately took a trip north. The chicken pastries (empadinha de frango) and the doce de nozes (walnut sweet) were terrific. I also liked the cajuzinho (cashew sweet). The casadinho was way too sweet for me, which is unusual! They did indeed have a good selection of dried goods, as well as typical meets and sausages used to prepare feijoada.
google avatar

Anthony L.

Yelp
This wonderful store/cafe/market is like setting foot back in Brazil. As a TV blares Brazilian portuguese, come in and enjoy a little cup of sweet complimentary coffee (Brazilian style), a smoothie or acai bowl, and a delicious fried empanada or treat. Also, get some frozen acai or cheese bread to take home and bake later. The staff is friendly and speaks excellent Portuguese and English, so a fun place to visit if you want to practice your Portuguese. The parking lot in front is small and can get crowded. I would recommend not parking in the small strip mall behind the By Brazil store; an insurance salesman (who is apparently a German citizen by desire to be German and not any right to citizenship) threatened that America would kick my ass or something like that if my friend did not move his car from in front of his shop. So, park somewhere legal and enjoy a trip to South America's biggest and most colorful country!

Nola S.

Yelp
This place us very quaint. Nice cozy family environment. However, the woman that runs the cash register doesn not like blacks. Don't support this business.

Kitty S.

Yelp
My kids, friends, and I love this place (well, I'm Brazilian too) so I can tell if the goodies are good, mediocre, or super good! By Brazil has improved a lot since past reviews. Now, they have little round tables with chairs inside, as well as the stools by the counter. Free, delicious real coffee: espresso size (FREE!!) it comes with sugar already, but it is not overly sweet: just right! Cheese balls (Pão de Queijo) and coxinha (little chicken and cheese chicken thigh shaped fried yummies) are the two items I use to review Brazilian places (on the savory side!). If these two items are good, even if you did not like the others - it is still worth it! Cheese balls requires special taste buds: you will either fall in love and crave if for life (like many reviewers here declared and accepted!) or you will find it is the strangest thing you have ever eaten, but you cannot stop eating it! They huge size fresh ones and the frozen packages from Amafil, which are really, really good to bake at home. I was skeptical at first, but they really worked well. I make mine a little bigger than bite size: they are delicious! And not too expensive. Try one of each different pastries and then you can pick the ones you like the most! Very interesting combinations and ingredients: all delicious in their own ways. Don't forget to check the sweets to the left: they are out of this world: I have not tried one that I did not like there. They are much better than the ones I make at home. I just really need to watch my wallet though: I usually buy tons of stuff and spend a minimal of $100 each time. But I do not go very often, so I buy a LOT. If you are into sodas, you MUST TRY Guaraná! It is made of a natural fruit, and the bubbles are very fine and refreshing. All my Americans, Filipino, Chinese, Spanish, and others LOVE that place! It is easy to grab and go already made snacks. They run around $2/piece - but are very filling! Hope you can stop by and try again if you went once [in the past] and did not like it. They have changed a lot, positively! If anything is cold - just ask them to make another one for you. They are really nice ladies. :)
