"Celebrated Austin restaurateur Larry McGuire (Jeffrey’s, Perla’s) turned his passion for style and design into a second career when he purchased this retail brand. With locations on hip South Congress and near the Whole Foods flagship, By George sells chic clothes for men and women (think brands like Our Legacy, Protagonist, and Jenni Kayne). The home-goods section of the store gives the chance to outfit your dining room (oak bowls, scented candles), pamper your four-legged best friend (plush, round dog beds), and, since it’s Austin, broadcast music anywhere in your house with a speakerdesigned to look likeaclassic Marshall amplifier. If you’re lucky, your visit might coincide with a pop-up from alocal restaurant."

Obviously a gorgeous store. There’s plenty to shop from. It’s very high end and the displays are. I felt done. This is a higher price point shop if you’re looking for well selected investment pieces.

I came to buy some nice clothes for my upcoming vacation. Not sure if the staff was just having an off day or that inept with social interaction but upon entering (wearing my gym clothes) I was given a confused look and then was asked to put my purse upfront to prevent shoplifting as a “store policy”. Meanwhile, there is no visible signage stating this rule AND a woman walked in a few minutes after me and nobody approached her regarding her bag. Duly noted, will absolutely not return.

Came for a +44 pop up and was told that Lewis Hamilton would be stopping by the next day to say hi to fans. Waited for hours before store opening with other fans, while employees trickled in late. Was then told that Lewis would be running through the line in the 30 minutes he had before needing to depart for the track. Instead, when he arrived the employees selfishly took pictures with him inside the store and paid no mind to the many fans who waited outside for hours and never got to see him. The bad karma is probably why Lewis DNF the american grand prix.

Be careful. I made an $1,800 purchase at this store, and despite being told I could make a full return if the item didn’t work (it didn’t), they didn’t honor the agreement and offered only store credit. On top of it, the manager showed no empathy at all. No “sorry for the misunderstanding”, “no, I’m sure that’s frustrating but that’s our policy.” Just the expressionless repetition of the policy. The other reviews on here make sense. Great shop, great product, poor service. This is 100% a reflection of the manager.

Do NOT come to this boutique!! Save your time, energy and money!! If you are not deemed worthy of their help/attention they will act like you do not exist. Sad. I walked into this boutique being very excited to view at some of my favorite brands, Bottega Veneta, Loewe, Maison Margiela, Bode, etc. I did not even get a single look or hello in my direction. As a tourist in Austin, that interaction put a very bad taste in my mouth. It's not worth it! Go save your money and visit the actual brands stores that way you can build a profile with each brand. Deliberately ignored by all 3 employees, I walked by each of them and made myself especially seen. I was utterly shocked and disgusted by such intentional negligence. I could tell that I was not wanted in that space. Very angry and disappointed in how they treat their guests.

Google
(11/26/2023) the ladies of bygeorge south congress deigned not to discount a new white shirt, flawless apart from what looked like a coffee stain on the back, saying “we’re selling it as is”. y’all need to wake up: you’re not a vintage store so selling sullied items at full price is kinda iconic but maybe not in a great way.

Google
I didn't end up buying the dress I tried on, because it looked terrible on my body vs on the hanger... But I must give credit to the staff at this location. While the other store makes me feel like I should put a bag over my head and run out of the store crying; the employees at this location were very friendly and willing to help me with any question I had. When I'm ready to update my wardrobe this spring, I'll be back to this spot to look for something a little more fashionable than the t-shirt and jeans I have on at present moment.

Google
Super rad store. The staff is always so nice! Like really nice. I'm a college student and I rarely have the money to spend but regardless it's always a good thing to stop by, everyone is always helpful and super nice. And they stock good stuff, obviously. Only place in town with some of the gear they stock.

Yelp
You'd think that a boutique that sells $1,200 corduroy pants would be staffed by really helpful, friendly people. You'd be wrong. The staff on the women's side were lovely, but I made the mistake of coming through the door that opens through the men's section. The two guys staffing the men's side were rude and snooty. I guess I didn't look wealthy? Wealthy elitist or not, spending $1,200 on a pair of cords confirms you're an idiot.

Please ready screen shot review I've sent to ny George. It explains their return policy and how they are NOT transparent about it!

Yelp
I've been shopping here since 2018 when I first discovered this awesome spot. They have a great selection that seems to be hand selected by someone as the them is perfectly crafted for the store and includes unique brands that many people aren't even aware of. The employees are wacky and fun but also great at customer service and knowledgeable on the brands and items that the store has. It has everything from bongs to sunglasses. If you're shopping on south Congress and you don't go here then you are majorly missing out! Must visit when you're in our beautiful capital city.

Yelp
By the time i found what i was looking for, tried on the shirt, and was getting ready to check out (all without being acknowledged by anyone, despite no other customers in the store), I decided this wasn't a "high end" business i wanted to support. It was a great reminder why online shopping is the way to go.

Yelp
I first started shopping at ByGeorge about 4 years ago, when I found an amazing Alexander Wang piece in their sale section! Fast forward to today, I find myself popping in the store at least once a week. ByGeorge carries an amazing array of fashion selections varying from subtle to streetwear. Both locations (South Congress and North Lamar) are awesome! I always manage to come across amazing finds like Stone Island, RAF Simons, Maison Margiela, Golden Goose, etc. The garments and sneakers here are of high quality, therefore expect to price tags to reflect this. Mind you, you're not shopping at Urban Outfitters or H&M. The employees at ByGeorge are amazing and display phenomenal customer service at all times. I've seen employees always go above and beyond to cater to the customers. One might say, "You even feel like you have your own personal stylist." In my own opinion, ByGeorge is a staple here in Austin with it comes to high fashion retail shopping. If you enjoy fashion and superior quality clothing this is a store you want to visit.

Yelp
Extremely unfriendly and ungracious staff. For a store that sells these type of brands, they did not say hello, did not say how can I help you, and did not say thank you when I completed my purchase. They have great brand but the staff turned me off so much I only bought what I had to buy.

Yelp
Why George, I LOVE your clothes! Home to some of my favorite designers (Rebecca Taylor and Marc Jacobs to name a few) and some new ones I've yet to discover...this is one cool boutique.! By George is a bit pricey (especially compared to the other boutiques I've been to in Austin), but well worth it if you're looking to dress to impress. There were about 10 clothing items I would have loved to take home with me, but I resisted after considering the lack of space in my suitcase and bank account. However, before my next trip to Austin I plan on making some room for a shopping trip at By George in both my suitcase and bank account.
google avatar

Yelp
Upscale clothing store in Austin. Sometimes you'll find good deals at their sales rack. I've purchased brands like Acne Studios, APC, etc that you probably won't find somewhere else in Austin. Employees are pretty nice to me. The dressing room can be a little dusty though. The surrounding area of South Congress is a pretty fun and lively place to walk around when you are done shopping

Yelp
Great selection of designers! If you're on the look-out to upgrade your fashion game and you're near SoCo - I'd highly recommend stopping by By George. The brands are an eclectic mix of high fashion, basic, and quality good. They have menswear, womenswear, and home goods. The location is also great if you want to grab a bite to eat - it's near Hopdaddy and some brunch places as well.

Yelp
BUYER BEWARE!!!! You shop there. Its expensive but you expect great quality and terrific customer care. Surprise thats not By George. I bought a pair of $525 Mishca mens sunglasses. They were beautiful but they broke at the hinge soon after I got them. Broke is not really the word. It was connected with a piece of metal and I quess glue. I took them back and they had them fixed. Within a month they broke apart again in the same place. I took them back and they fixed them again. Surprise within a month they broke again in the same place. The employees were always nice . One said Mischa said it was the Texas heat!. I am like you sold them to me in Texas. SO THE GLASSES WERE OBVIOUSLY FAULTY. On the fourth break they say tough luck the warranty has expred and we not going to do anything for selling you a faulty pair of $525 sunglasses. After the second repair they should have offered a replacement pair as what they sold me was junk. When the empolyee said basically they didnt care I knew I would never shop there again. High priced goods should be strongly backed by the store. I got screwed. I am angry and dissappointed in BY GEORGE. Mark M Ps. I just looked at more of their reviews. If I owned that place I be thinking about the management in place there. Terrible.

Yelp
I was visiting Austin for a couple of days for the first time and headed to South Congress. Saw the storefront of By George, thought the atmosphere looked cute, and wandered in. A few minutes go by and I browse the selection. A sales associate comes up and notices my shirt. She asks with a stoic, quizzical face if the top was from Madewell. I told her it was from Forever 21. She asked "ah, are you 21?" I replied "Haha, no, a few years further." "Ah, so you're not forever 21." and just.. walks away. No smile, no "let me know if you need any help". Just simply walked away. Wow.

Yelp
I love that there is a store like this to wander into on SoCo. The location is great; you can have brunch and nicely curated shopping all in walking distance. They had many labels I hadn't heard of, but I'd then find a carefully selected pair of Stella McCartney sunglasses, or Band of Outsiders lightweight sweater. I loved the eclectic mix. They seemed to have a keen eye for what fabrics and shapes work specifically in Austin for the summer, which I still have trouble with myself! Upscale yet relaxed, flowy yet still smartly tailored; I will be returning here in the future when I'm lost in the summer heat. Bonus: There was enough men's items and homewares to keep my boyfriend well occupied while I shopped around.

Tom G.

Yelp
Loved this store and the one on Lamar. Great selection, attentive service and even a friendly dog! I like the men's selection and my wife liked the jewelry from local artist. We will be back!!

Andrea P.

Yelp
Extremely rude customer service. If I could give it negative stars I would. Walked in and was not greeted, which after my first and only interaction with one of the workers I am glad I was not initially approached. We were looking at a cute bag and a sales woman came up. Without even a "hello" she began speaking to us in an extremely degrading manner. Talking out loud about how the prices are a steal and began hinting that we couldn't afford them. My friend respectively said that she thinks the purse is really cute and was quickly cut off by the woman again who said "Do you want to know what else is cute? Me in the morning. I'm fucking adorable." Take note that the store also was pretty full. At such a "high quality" store, you would expect the service to be the same. I highly recommend spending your money and time elsewhere.

Yelp
The employees at By George are absolutely wonderful. They are as kind as can be and very helpful. They carried a conversation and made it feel like we were long time friends. I would 100% come again because I felt very welcome!

Yelp
I really wanted to give By George a chance. I remember walking in to the downtown location (off lamar) and not being greeted. Not one hello. A "how can I help you" noticeably absent. That was years ago. I think ten to be exact. It's not at all hard to greet people when they walk in the door. Everyone is a potential customer. And should be treated as so. Today, I thought I'd give this place another shot. I walked into the Soco location and the two sales girls were tending to a few girls at the register. One was making a purchase. Not sure why it takes two people to help one person (with other customers in the store) I'll never know. Once one of the girls was done being impressed by a tank top from Guatemala, she moved to the middle of the store to look as if she was "tending" to customers. Still no "hello". Even after staring for a moment. Interesting. It's like I experienced the same treatment back in the other location years ago. Clearly not impressed with the way I was treated, my party and I left. Funny thing is, I wasn't looking for a dress, but I was ready to drop some serious cash if I found one I liked. Guess what? I did. At BlackMail down the street. The employees there greeted me the minute I walked in and one of them even suggested a few things for me to try. I fell in love with a dress and took it home. Boom. Sorry By George. You haven't changed and you don't get a third chance. At least not from me. Or my friends for that matter...

Ann B.

Yelp
Truly a destination! The stores location is perfect for a good time. The store itself is beautiful the merchandise is all so special and the staff are welcoming and helpful. I love this store

Yelp
Wow, what a fun experience! One of the best shopping experiences I've had in a very long time. South Congress crew was amazing. Sara and Mary took care of me from start to finish. Fun atmosphere and great store.

Yelp
I go in here sometimes to see if maybe they have gotten in something that I would actually wear within a price range that is reasonable. So far, this has not happened, but the staff is nice and not pushy, so they get two stars for that--there are certainly other high end businesses that do a much worse job in terms of attitude. I just wish the stuff they have didn't look like a higher end version of J. Jill (a retailer I also have never bought anything from). I have actually seen shirts in the same color, cut, and fabric in both places, the only differences being the labels and the price tags . I don't find their clothing very inspiring. It hovers somewhere between trendy and frumpy, and for the price I'd like to see dazzling and original. Still, that probably isn't the fault of this shop. it would appear that fashion everywhere is becoming standardized regardless of price point so that all you see in the shops is what is in the magazines. I guess this means that unless I develop some kind of sudden passion for smocked shirts and bubble skirts, I'm out of luck till things change.
google avatar

Ibrahim B.

Yelp
Ridiculously over prize items ! They do miss that we are in 21. century and people can look up the things online and find the same thing they sale at least half price. If you never been there and heard about the store don't bother you aren't missing anything.

Yelp
My bank account yells at me every time I shop here, but sometimes a girl's got needs, albeit Hoop Dreams-style, overpriced needs. My fashion loving friend came into town this weekend and let it be known that a shopping spree would be had, and likely unleashed upon the come hither boutiques of South Congress. I acquiesced, but not before offering a silent prayer to my wallet. by george has always been a favorite, even when I was a poor grad student who could only grope the beautiful designer clothes and whimper like a kicked dog when I turned over the price tag. $400 for a deconstructed blouse that looks like Freddy took the knives to it (although in a loving, seam conscious way)? Oh yes. $800 for an exquisitely floaty silk cocktail dress that looks like it was made from my grandma's scarf collection? Indeed. Don't even get me started on the jewelry. I love all the local designers' delicate pieces taunting me through the oh-so art directed display cases. It makes me wonder if anyone actually ever buys them, because it seems like it's always the same pricey prisoners trapped down there, begging me to free them. My credit card said, "Are you on crack?" The upshot was that I left the store with a cute pair of trouser jeans - by far the least expensive piece of clothing in the store I could find, and luckily, they fit and look great. My friend found a darling silk sleeveless shell with a fab gazelle pattern. And though I would have given up iced lattes for at least a week for the amazing leather boho Hobo tote bag I kept fondling and sniffing (leather smells goooood), I managed to drum up some self-respect and discipline and not splurge. One star off for the hilarious price tags, and I was also slightly annoyed with the pushy sales lady whose demeanor was super-uber-power of five-friendly but whose eyes said, "BUY NOW! DO IT! MY COMMISSIONS ARE LOW AND I WILL CUT YOU, BITCH!" All in all, my bank account only cuffed me once in the head, then gave me a cold stare. And really, that was the very best I could expect. I'll take what I can get.

Yelp
I LOVE by george downtown . . . The luxurious fabrics and interesting cuts always amaze me and are definitely worth browsing, but the prices are (way) out of my reach. The new South Congress location has a broader range of price points: you can find a dress for $120 hanging next to one that might cover this month's rent. The elegance is still here, with a twist that manages to capture the eclectic vibe of the South Congress district. Clothes feel a little bit more vintage, a bit more rockstar, a bit more. . . accessible for me. The staff, which has gotten a bunch of shit on this site, have always, at every location, been totally stellar to me, regardless of what I'm wearing or buying. And I'm not some fashionista, I'm just a regular girl.

j b.

Yelp
Don't shop here. The customer service is heinous.

Erin E.

Yelp
While I don't normally shop here on a regular basis, when I was in town for a quick jaunt in Austin, I decided to stop by and take a look around. The shop is located in a hip up and coming area of Austin. I wish they had more variety in selection, however I was really pleased with the service that I received from Leila. She was knowledgeable, pleasant, and helpful.
google avatar

Rhonda M.

Yelp
I love (the downtown location) By George. They are very pricey but the clothing has an urban edge to it that I like with a varied selection for all. They do cater to the ultrathin but, then again, who doesn't these days...maybe I should run more. :) p.s. If you're in a very tight pinch for time and need a great outfit quick and money is no issue, shop here. You'll find something and you'll love it (but you'll have to get a part-time job). p.s.s. Check out their sales. They mark them way down when they do and deals galore can be had.

Yelp
I loved By George on S. Lamar for different reasons then by george on S. Congress. by george is like the hip younger college sister and they have great fun pieces that are well designed, not too trendy, and can be stable casual pieces. The price are a bit higher then the rest of the stores on S. Congress, but it a nice life to this area offering many fresh pieces. There are brands that are recognizable such as Marc Jacobs, J Brand, Rebecca Taylor, etc. My favorite thing about the store are labels and pieces that I don't come across much and they totally grabbed my eyes. I scored a couple of very fun but timeless pieces that I know will wear well throughout the years.

Yelp
I went in yesterday. With a cold, not feel attractive and a $50 gift certificate. Thinking that I may have a "Pretty Woman" experience where I am afraid of the women working there - I found they were amazing and refreshing to be around. The service was flawless and I walked out with a shirt that people complimented me on today. I know they both said they were new, so good for them, THANK YOU GIRLS! I am going to be back again with that type of service it is worth paying more for a cute outfit. Girl who got the most COMFORTABLE, soft grey shirt.

Yelp
Oh, By George. How you make my day. I think I like the place more now that they've renovated and opened up the space a bit more. Also, they now carry menswear and apothecary! It's a bit pricier than most but, well worth the price and super cute. They carry Maison Kitsune which is quite in line with the Austin scene and don't be surprised if you see it around town. Also, it's the only place in town that's fashion forward rather than being a store with clothes. They also have carbonated wine! Check it out!

Yelp
Tre was super nice. Made the experience really great. Super classy place. Felt broke looking at it

Yelp
After a lovely day of strolling from our downtown condo to Perla's for a wonderful lunch and some shopping I took a visiting friend to George's to look around. We were both dressed in tennis and shorts and relaxed from a wonderful morning walk. The store is cute and interesting but the unpleasant tall blond sales girl with the rude attitude seemed to think she was working at Gucci in New York. Very rude, walked right past us to offer a customer wine and looked down at us in the rudest manner. Never greeted by anyone or even acknowledged. We are both heading to Europe in December and doing some shopping but I will never walk into George's again. We're in Austin folks, get a grip on yourselves and remember never to judge a book by it's cover.

Jane S.

Yelp
Today I visited By George right after it opened. I was in there for ten minutes and not one of the three sales persons greeted me. I would have stayed longer if someone had acknowledged me.

Yelp
I'd been wanting to go into By George for a while, since I live down the street, and their window displays always looked adorable. I finally went in a few weekends ago, and... meh. It was disappointing. The employees were certainly nice and not snooty at all, but the clothes really weren't interesting. It might be more the fault of current fashion trends than of By George specifically, but I couldn't believe I didn't find a single item in the store that intrigued me. (Unfortunately for my pocketbook, I haven't had the same problem at Nordstrom or Barneys Coop.)

Anna B.

Yelp
I went to the SoCo location just yesterday. I hadn't been in the store before, but knew to expect some higher-end clothing. Since it's the beginning of the month, I have some extra cash to spend and was wandering around SoCo all Saturday to find a cute new dress or pair of shoes. When I first went in I was greeted by a woman at the cashwrap (this is REALLY basic, if store employees are not attentive enough to even do this, it's a bad sign). After a bit of milling around and looking at the clothing on the racks, I usually expect to be followed up with by an employee. I was able to go over the whole selection twice without ever being approached by one of the sales girls. While I usually do not have many questions or care for help shopping, it is important for the sales people to introduce themselves and show they are available to assist customers if need be (and I usually do go back to these people for help later on). The whole store seemed busy enough for a Saturday afternoon, but none of the people in the store were actively getting assistance from staff. The two sales people I did notice were both standing at the cashwrap, chatting with each other, and placing an order for lunch over the phone. As someone with retail experience, it is completely unprofessional to be ordering your lunch on the phone while you are working the floor. This is something that either needs to be done on your break or, at the very least, in a private back room away from where the customers can hear it. The selection of clothing was just okay. Everything seemed catered to a slightly older crowd than I prefer, the quality was not up to par with what I expect for that price point, and the smaller sizes were not well stocked. The one plus: they have Rag & Bone. I visited several other store this day, some other higher-end ones as well, and had much better shopping experiences at all of them than I did here. The main difference: the staff actually paid attention to the customers and were engaged and attentive. Most of the stores I went to I did not find items at to purchase that day, but the shopping experience made me want to go back and look again when they get new stock in. The same really can not be said for this store.

Yelp
Thanks for being normal and not at all snobby when we needed a place to wait for the rain to subside. Fabulous clothes, but none of us were in the mood to try things on.

Christina D.

Yelp
Not surprised to see other entries on yelp from people with similar experiences with the staff. I live on SoCo, and I love it more than anything. Stopped in for the first time today on my way to go grocery shopping today, but I'm assuming I was dressed too casually for any of the saleswomen to take me seriously. I had my eye on a couple cardigans to splurge on but I was the only person in the store to be completely ignored the entire time I was in there. It's funny, although not a single worker spoke to me I felt ALL of their eyes the entirety of my 15 minutes inside. I would have loved to speak to one of the 4/5 sales ladies there to get their opinion on a good cardigan for the office and instead I was looked down on as if I didn't belong in their store. I grew up near NYC and have walked into boutiques endless times yet today in this By George on SoCo was the ONLY time I have ever felt like I did today. Seeing others feeling the same way in these reviews is shameful. I have a deep feeling that if I walked in after work one day dressed in my professional clothing, I would have received an entirely different experience. I'll never step foot in here again, and I'll be sure to spread the word. Everybody should receive the same experience from a nice store, no matter if they are a POC or dressed for the gym or if they are stopping in on a 105 degree day on their way to the grocery market. Many other boutiques on SoCo to take our business to everyone!

Yelp
i'm a dude. i like clothes, picking out clothes, fashion, style - yada yada yada. it's a little hippy and flowy, rock n' roll with tinge of country, and urban with a hint of rustic. it's Anthropologie, but less granny. it's hippy, but real hippies couldn't afford it. it's rachel zoe, minus the diamonds and huge cartier panther ring. it's more lindsay lohan/the olsen twins/the sartorialist - not jessica simpson/heidi montag. its a slouchy cleverly detailed marc jacobs bag - not a vuitton logo'd speedy. that being sad, the true strength of this place is how well edited the collection is. everything is organized by the look, not by brand. you could see a $60 french connection sweater next to a $600 rag&bone jersey dress next to a $20 local tortoise shell artisan wallet. you can buy a complete outfit here without looking like you bought the entire outfit here - and that's what makes this place a true gem. it is expensive. that being said, if u go in here with the mentality of 'omg let's go in here, it's expensive, but it's a good collection, so we'll just look' - yeah, you're gonna feel slightly inferior and that the sales chicas are pushy. BUT if you go in with the mentality that u KNOW you're going to drop $500 on 2 or 3 pieces and have that kind of money - you'll think they are extremely helpful and knowledgeable. when my friend started a dressing room, the sales associate would pick out shoes and other pieces to go with the stuff she picked out. that i thought, was phenomenal and they were REALLY great pieces to try on with what was already picked out. strangely though, every time my friend came out all the sales associates were like 'omg it's so pretty . . .' on stuff that was def not 'omg pretty' on my friend - and she agreed too. a girl's gotta eat though (sales girls) so i understand. i was in sales too at one point. i was offered a beer. that sealed the deal. if i made over 70k a year, this would be the place i would spoil her with sartorial gifts from. this place has a certain old world, hippy/bohemian, timelessness to the stuff that's been picked out for it. you won't see overly logo'd true religions or 'status wear' here. this place is shutting it down. its buh-nanas. i dieee.

Yelp
this is the kind of place that i'm scared of going into because unless you're willing to drop srs $$$, the sales people really aren't that helpful. however, kudos on you if you can walk in without spending anything. the selection is really great! i haven't been to their downtown store but it is rather small. whatever! i got a gorgeous dress at 75% off. nice!

Yelp
Talk about service. All I bought was a book while waiting for my girlfriend but in the meantime I was offered beer (but opted for a bottle of water) and they even adjusted the temperature of the store.

Yelp
There were some cute things here, but I didn't dig the selection at this location as much as the I did downtown.

Yelp
Super cute buy & the shop girls were friendly as well as helpful. They were also helping a demanding mother/daughter but made time to make suggestions & give opinions. Left with THE CUTEST dress & I have to say I'm an experienced shopper rarely throwing down right away. Will definitely come back next time I'm in town.

Yelp
Very expensive but some things are worth buying until you look over your shoulder and at least 2 people are watching you shop, ready to attack, telling you how cute you would look in it and asking if they can start you a dressing room granted you don't even have the item off the rack yet. I love the clothes in the store but have walked out multiple times b/c the workers hound you and make it hard to relax and just shop.

Yelp
Stopped in here on a trip to Austin last spring and am so glad I did. The clothes and jewelry are fun and cute, and the sales people are super helpful. They are very happy to help you pick stuff out, help with sizing questions, and are just generally pleasant. They were also quite nice to my companion, who definitely is NOT a shopper, and was probably bored out of his mind :)

Yelp
by george... I love it. Great clothes (yes, they are pricey) by amazing designers. Really nice owners and staff. I will be a loyal, but infrequent customer!
