Where to Eat Hot Dogs in Chicago

"Byron's boiled dogs are probably one of the best examples of the Chicago-style dog. The empire may have shrunk — at one time Byron's had locations in front of Wrigley Field and in Lincoln Park where the massive Crate & Barrel store now stands. But the hot dogs always deliver a quality bite." - Ashok Selvam

Super cool spot for some delicious food! I had a bacon cheeseburger and it had everything on it. Ketchup mustard relish lettuce onion sport peppers cucumber green peppers and celery salt. I also got a hot dog with all the fixing Chicago style. Great food, medium prices but TOTALLY worth it.

Google
Food was good enough. Said I wanted onion rings 4 different times to the line workers because they were asking what my girlfriend & I wanted. For some reason, they were ignoring the onion ring part. Got to the register & had to restate my order which gives a bit of an unorganized vibe. Said twice to gentleman in the register that I would like onion rings. Got food and what do you know- no onion rings. Turkey burger my girlfriend ordered was awesome. Hot dog was okay. They didn't put sport peppers on it for some reason. Maybe the Byrons Chicago dog doesn't come with sport peppers? I'd say Portillo's has a better hot dog which isn't what I was expecting since Byrons is an old school mom & pop place. Fries were super hot & fresh. Place was a bit dirty. I'd come back but not in a hurry. Way better spots around the city. Workers were very nice. Just seemed a bit all over the place. The place wasn't busy either.

Google
Old school Chicago style hot dog restaurant. I got the classic Chicago hot dog. I was not disappointed.

Google
We’ve been coming here off and on for like 30 years of living in the neighborhood. Usually go to Budacki’s but it was closed. Got a hot dog and fries, and kid got a chicken breast sandwich combo. Price? $28. $28!!! That’s just crazy! Chicken sandwich was $15 and I guess hot dog and fries was almost $10. For sure, hot dog was good, and chix sandwich was good too, but damn. That’s expensive! People there are always nice, and food comes out quick. But damn. Pricey!

Google
I was really surprised by how excellent the food and service were at this unassuming place with a long-standing good neighborhood reputation. The people behind the grill were so friendly, and joked around with my kids while we ordered. We all really enjoyed our food, with good portion sizes and fresh ingredients. We loved the throwback decor, and the place was kept really clean. Lots of locals were coming and going, and I feel disappointed that I haven't stopped in sooner. We'll be back again!

Google
I've been going to Byron's since the 80's! Personally, I almost always get a double cheeseburger because they're delicious! I know the food trend now is all about the smash burger, and Byron's burgers are not smashed..but it is undeniable that the burgers here is fantastic! And like a Chicago style hot dog, which are great here too, you can get your burger "dragged through the garden" . I recommend getting a sprinkle of celery salt on your veggies while you're ordering. Byron's is a neighborhood staple and there's a reason that folks like me still drive over to get a quick meal after all of these years. The food is good and the service is always friendly and accommodating. The experience is constant. You can have whatever toppings you want on any sandwich and they don't judge. Even if you're new to Chicago and you want ketchup on a hotdog....I mean I will judge you, because ketchup doesn't go on a hotdog, but they will drown it in the stuff if you really want it. :)

Google
Mmmmm! Delicious burgers in this place that’s been around for - long time. The neighborhood has literally changed, but this place remains. The burgers are excellent. Fresh and hot. Fries are good. Service is great. They do have plenty of parking in their own lot.

Google
Bryon's hot dogs has been in that location over the 90's great food and always had been like a welcome home family feel to it.I've been going since a toddler, and the food has always been fantastic. It's a real comfort food kind of place. The atmosphere is so welcoming, it feels like family. I'm always happy to go back. It's a true neighborhood gem.

Yelp
I came here a whim on a Thursday night. I wanted a burger. Much to my surprise, Thursdays have a burger special! For under $10, you get a cheeseburger, fries, and soda! The burger was delicious and fresh off the grill; this will be a go-to spot when I'm craving one. I also added a hot dog (Chicago style). Personally, Chicago dogs are a little busy for my taste, but the hotdog itself was very good. The fries were plentiful, and I had a bunch of extra, which I reheated in my airfryer the next day, and they were just as good. Service was quick, I was in and out (with freshly cooked food) in 10 minutes. I'll be back!

Yelp
Cute-as-a-button decor stepping you back into a diner diner-style era where burger dates and milkshakes were the highest priority. During lunch, nearby patrons are running in and out of here to pick up a greasy bag of fries and most likely an Italian beef. Although the polish is also a hot commodity! While the team is assembling your Italian Beef you feel like a kid watching as they hold the whole sandwich with a pair of tongs and dip it in au jus saturating the beef and French bread. There are sticker vending machines and Coca Cola branded refrigerators to make you feel extra nostalgic. The service reminds me of stereotypical Chicago dudes working with their family members serving up glizzys. They are straightforward, a few one-liners, and they look like they like to have fun with the boys after work. The fries are thinner cut, a crispy crunch, and are topped with wonderful finely grated salt that decorates your fingers after. The Italian beef was a bit bland but was dipped to perfection with the perfect ratio of bread to ju. The quantity of Italian beef inside was generous like an Italian father at his daughter's wedding.

Yelp
Me, my 13 yr old, and my father in law went on a hot dog eating expedition one day, and we loved Byron's the most of all the places we went. The quality of the pickle and the peppers really put it on top. Come here if you want a great Chicago dog

Yelp
Went to the Windy City Hot Dog Festival. Was excited when we saw Byron's there. We ordered the 2 of the largest hotdogs! They looked delicious!! Excited to take our first bite only to bite into a raw hotdog I went back to the stand and told them and they kindly gave us 2 more hotdogs! Once again the hotdogs were freaking warm on the outside and cold on the inside!!!! I know Byron's is better than this!! How dare you serve people RAW UNCOOKED FOOD!!! Just to get through the lines? Shame on you! Unfortunately we will never try Byron's again. Beware of uncooked food!

Yelp
Eh. Fourth of July and I wanted a hot dog, but I don't have a grill and didn't want to go to the trouble to cook them just for me. Since other restaurants were closed Byron's was the logical choice (it's also about two blocks away, so that made it attractive too). I got the Dogzilla combo, which was a humongous hot dog that I mostly ate (it's like a quarter pound hotdog, so large is an understatement). It comes on an Italian sub roll rather than a hot dog bun because there's not really a bun that could stand up to it. It was ok, but I'd not get one again. The Italian beef ordered for my dining partner was not good. This is a dude who can inhale an Italian beef, but half the sandwich (at least) was thrown in the trash. The meat wasn't as good as a lot of other Italian beef places, and the texture was a bit different. Overall the flavor of others' Italian beef is significantly better, and the fact that Byron's gives you about two pounds of meat doesn't make up for it's subpar beef. This is an counter service place. They have a small dining room, and offer carry out (of course) as well as delivery. They also have a pretty large parking lot, particularly since most of the other businesses along Lawrence from the between the lake and Western don't. I've lived down the street from this place for over a dozen years and been here perhaps once before. Perhaps now I remember why, and I probably won't return.

Yelp
My love and I were in the area after a morning of walking around Ravenswood, so we were getting hungry. We decided to pop into Byron's, at the corner of Lawrence and Paulina. The interior has a bit of a retro design appearance, with black-surfaced seating in the booths and glass block. We each decided to go with a combo meal, which includes an order of fries and fountain drink. I don't believe any of the combos were priced below ten dollars, but the amount of food gives you the impression of a good value. They were fairly busy on this Saturday afternoon, but our food came out very quickly after we placed our order. My Philly cheesesteak was sizably loaded with toppings and was a hefty sandwich. I thought it was good but not great. I actually liked the brown sack of shoestring potatoes better than the sandwich, though you needed the ketchup for the fries. My love's hot dog extended past the length of the bun, but she agreed that it was also just OK. The fountain pop admittedly hit the spot for each of us after a lot of steps that day. Try the Green River soda (yes it's green) if you'd like!

Yelp
Having passed by Byron's more times than I can count, it was time to make this our quick lunch stop while enjoying the area's annual freecycle event. While I found their combo meals to be more pricy than I assumed, I was in the mood for a fountain soda, so I did the hotdog combo. The dog was okay. The shoestring fries and soda were great. I was shocked at how fast our order arrived. Though the meal and service were good, the place is very dirty, hence my three stars. None of the empty tables had been wiped, and the vent above our table was filthy. The area around the soda fountain was also very unclean.

Rose B.

Yelp
A very disappointing experience. We've eaten in before, but due to my husband's current injury we chose to order on-line and do pick-up. We ordered combos, for which on-line ordering specifies 12 oz cans of soda and makes you choose the flavor. I picked up the order and left. When I got home, I had two empty cups in the bag of food. In addition, we had ordered a giant hot dog with relish and onion. At the bottom of the bag was a smashed regular size Chicago dog. I called the restaurant mostly to suggest they should either change the soda wording for their online ordering or warn customers to get their soda. In a very light tone I explained about the empty cups and the girl said, "oh, yeah, it's self-serve." I said that I realize that now, but suggested they should let people know that before they leave. The girl's response: "well you're supposed to check your food. ". I tried to reason with her about being helpful to the customer. Lost cause. I finally told her that her reaction just lost the restaurant our business.

Yelp
This is my favorite hole in the wall type burger spot ever. It's a little gritty/greasy but that's what makes it so good. Burgers can be loaded with toppings so if you like veggies no other place does it as good as this one. 1st place I go to any time I'm back in town.
google avatar

Yelp
Authentic Chicago dog with bomb French fries! Food was fresh and served up quick. Their menu is straight forward and the staff is tentative. Took our order to go but plenty of seating inside. Go get yourself a dog!!
google avatar

Yelp
I have been dining it at Byron's for years with my family. Veggie burger is delicious, and the best in the neighbourhood. Fast delivery. Great menu selections.

Josh S.

Yelp
Decent. I've gone here for beefs for years. I've come across better but it's not bad and the servings are rather large. They'd be great for a drunk night if they didn't close at 9. Even on weekends.
google avatar

Yelp
Wonderful place when you're craving burgers, corndogs, hotdogs, cheese sticks, etc.. Do yourself a favor and don't use the online ordering system, they've been having some issues with it. Best way to order ahead of time is by calling upfront. Decent amount of parking as well.

Yelp
I didn't receive a response, hence, posting a review on Yelp. Hello Mike, I am contacting you via email as a courtesy. Rather than post a negative review online because we have patronized your Byron's location on Lawrence Ave for years. Today on August 1st around 6:30pm we arrived at Byrons on Lawrence Ave. We proceed to place our usual order. I was asked what I would like on my burger and I requested my veggie burger have grilled onions with cheese topped with everything except cucumber and hot peppers. We payed, were told to have a seat and they would bring our food out to us. When the food was brought out to us I noticed my burger didn't have cheese nor grilled onions on it and it was cold to the touch. My spouse brought back my burger and requested the cheese. The cook said the onions were on the bottom. When my spouse returned with my burger, the had placed a slice of cold cheese on it and there was not any grilled onions. I decided to bring the burger up to the counter myself this time. As I was explaining to the young guy at the register that the cheese is cold & I still didn't have any onions. The cook interjected and said that my spouse said that the cold cheese was ok, that was true. However, he insisted that the grilled onions were on the bottom and they were not. It was his defiant, short and curt manner that was offensive. All because of a simple request. He asked me to hand him the burger and when I did he threw the burger into the garbage and rudely said I'll make you another one. At this point I'm extremely annoyed. I asked why the attitude? Your cook gets the order wrong and treats me like I'm being a jerk when they asked me what I wanted on the burger in the first place. I've dealt with his rude manner before over a year ago or more and I ignored it because everyone is entitled to having a bad day but I won't tolerate it twice. He was rude and has no customer service skills. It was not Ted, my encounter was with a short Hispanic man that was cooking today. So unfortunate that you have an employee like that representing your resturant. FYI: I thought you should know. Regards,

Yelp
$20 for a burger and a hot dog. And who the h-e- double hockey sticks puts lettuce, green bell pepper and cucumber on a hotdog in chicago? Fries were cold and soggy. They brag about the president eating there. Musta been nixon.
google avatar

Mark J.

Yelp
According to this place a hotdog with everything on it is a hotdog with relish, lettuce, and tomato. Stay away
google avatar

Ari A.

Yelp
I never go wrong with Byron's hot dogs! I didn't realize there were so many locations but this one was just as good as the other. Check out their daily special, or if you're like my brother, be creative and order something other than their namesake hot dog.
google avatar

Lucy M.

Yelp
Delicious food and the staff is so nice! Always super friendly and attentive. The burgers are great and fries are always perfect and they give you plenty.
google avatar

Coreen W.

Yelp
Was fairly disappointed with my meal at Byron's. Seems like a lot of short cuts are being taken and nothing was fresh. For instance, I ordered fries and they had been sitting in the tray for awhile because they were cold and mushy. Hopefully I just caught them on an off day.

Mr D.

Yelp
Very disappointed. The hot dog bun was cold and not steamed properly. The tomatoes were somewhat dried out as if they were sitting out for a long time. The fries were not good quality and very thin. A far cry from Wolfy's or Portillo's quality. Maybe that's why I was the only one in the dining area.
google avatar

Jacob W.

Yelp
jumbo hot dog was great, double cheese burger was very good. fries were solid. overall good food saw one dude constantly cleaning , nice to see guy who served us at counter and grill were not very happy or welcoming people though. rather short and seemed annoyed. hopefully they just had a bad day and it normally isn't like that bc this place is a 5 star if have great attitudes

Yelp
I used to live in Ravenswood and passed this place all the time. I don't know why I never stopped in! Now that I'm in Avondale, I'm a little sad that I didn't stop in sooner. Most of you will love the retro diner-y feel of this place. It is really kind of a blue-collar unapologetic sort of place so don't expect something like Johnny Rockets. Cheeseburger with "everything" is basically what a Chicago dog is, just replacing the protein. It's a flattop grill sort of burger, but just what you need sometimes instead of those poncy gourmet burgers that cost over twice as much. Even Billy Corgan chose this place to meet a bunch of his fans way back once upon a time. If it's good enough for Billy, well, you know that's saying something!
google avatar

Paul E.

Yelp
On May 2, 2011, at approximately 3:00PM (CST), President Barack Obama ordered Operation Neptune Spear. The Operation was carried out successfully and resulted in the death of Osama bin Laden. Later that day, at approximately 4:00PM, the President ordered a Bratwurst Combo Meal from Byron's Hot Dogs. His sausage was grilled masterfully and affirmed Byron's place in the Vienna Beef Hot Dog Hall of Fame.

Mitch S.

Yelp
The portion size was excellent. The Italian beef sandwich was a bit dry and pricy, but was still tasty.
google avatar

Brett J.

Yelp
This is a great hot dog. It's not far from my apartment, so I stopped by to take home. Had 2 dogs with the works. Great. Also had a chocolate milk shake which was also great. Lots of parking, which is a big plus!! Fries are OK, asked from that 5 stars.
google avatar

Michael T.

Yelp
Classic diner with great burgers and hot dogs, though I almost always opt for the cheeseburger with fries. You can dine inside or take it to go. Free parking is also available. Great place!
google avatar

Alena M.

Yelp
SO SO GOOD!! Especially the milkshakes . Everyone who works there is so nice and they are always on-time, and very often they are even quicker that GrubHub estimated. Obviously their milkshakes are amazing (vanilla, strawberry and chocolate) because you can just tell they use really good quality ice cream . I crave the vanilla nearly everyday. Between my boyfriend, my best friend and I, I can highly recommend their burgers, gyro sandwich, grilled chicken and grilled cheese. So so good! Thank you, Byron's for being so amazing.
google avatar

Daniel M.

Yelp
Not bad. The combos are good deals. Neat pictures of the owners with the Obamas. They have TVS, which is nice. Ample parking space. Neat building exterior look. Buffalo sauce on the side is pretty good. The fries are good but I still like Wendy's fries better.
google avatar

Candace C.

Yelp
Byron's - where "everything" on your dog means shredded lettuce, relish, diced onions, tomato slices, green peppers, cucumbers, pickle slices, sport peppers optional - served with a fork. Other than that - it's your standard Chicago hot dog stand. Dogs, burgers, polish, Italian beef etc. Fries are thin and served in a paper bag (as opposed to a sleeve). Fountain drinks where you fill yourself - good for Coke Zero lovers. I mix a little bit of root beer with the Diet Pepsi to soften the taste. We were there at 3:00 on a Sunday afternoon. Counter service was friendly and our order was ready quickly.
google avatar

Bobblehead B.

Yelp
This Byron's is pathetic. Understaffed. Changing the oil in the frier at 4:30 pm. People walking out in disgust. Dining area was dirty. Grabbing gyros meat out of the back and grilling it is a BAD JOKE on customers. Avoid this place. Filthy interior and cutting corners on quality.
google avatar

Jeannie F.

Yelp
I had a hot dog that looked like Picasso made it. It was a beautiful mess: covered in celery salt and relish, the pickle was headed toward Marianos and the sport peppers pointed toward the lake. It was, like a Picasso sculpture, weird, and a masterpiece. Fries were good, too.
google avatar

Mark D.

Yelp
On my visit to Chicago, I had in mind a culinary bucket list, with one item being a Chicago dog. Yelp revealed this Byron's location to be a short walk from the apartment where I was staying. On arrival, I was warmly greeted by the manager. When I told him I'd come from out of town for a Chicago dog experience, he proudly explained all the options available. I ended up getting the Jumbo Dog with everything. Everything is like getting a whole salad bowl of toppings! Tomatoes, lettuce, cucumbers, pickle spear, green and sport peppers virtually hide the large dog. It was a messy, but fun, challenge to eat. Some Chicago dog "purists " have chided Byron's in their reviews saying there's too many items on the dog, and that the bun doesn't have poppy seeds. Oh please! Byron's Dog is what it is, and I found it to be a delicious "meal in itself". Also included in the combo were fries. I like how they serve them in a grease-absorbing plain brown paper sack. They are fresh, hand-cut, and lightly seasoned and don't even require ketchup. The restaurant itself was just straight ahead no-frills diner atmosphere. One thing I didn't like that you see in my video is the woman preparing my dog isn't wearing gloves. I'm still alive writing this review, but still, for hygiene's sake, they should exercise more care in food preparation. This location was convenient for me, but I wouldn't like go out of my way to dine here.

Joel M.

Yelp
Disappointed. No Rosen Poppy Seed bun. Hot dogs were skinless, not natural casings. Place wasn't busy so surprised that the dining room was waiting to be cleaned/ tables, fountain drink area.
google avatar

Roseann M.

Yelp
Byron's is consistent, delicious, and fast. Somehow, the staff manages to keep the dining room clean. When I want a delicious veggie burger, this is where I come. And the onion straws are addictive.
google avatar

Sharyn M.

Yelp
Chicago isn't Chicago without Byron's. Being Born and raised in this city , Byron's is by far the top of the list when it comes to my Chicago dog fix with the BEST FRIES. The dogs here are perfect , the cute busy guys working are always friendly and Always busy !! The Chicago Dog is made in that beautiful style , wrapped in the parchment paper and the huge bag of fries in the grease spotted paper bag. I mean , c'mon !! This is what I grew up with !! I also have to have my other staple. My Pizza Puff That's my old school treat from many years ago. Very genuine here and oh so damn good! Byron's has all you need for true Chicago , outstanding prices in comparison to others. You get your dollars worth and real tradition here. You just gotta go!!! (Next time , I'm Trying the Beef!! )
google avatar

Rebecca K.

Yelp
If you're looking for a good greasy quick meal, this is the place! I love their burgers and fries and milkshakes. It's everything you'd expect and for a good price too. They also have a picture with Obama on the wall, so this place must be good. Also, they have a lot of options for toppings. Comparing it to another place, it's like a local Five Guys.
google avatar

Allison F.

Yelp
I don't even know how Byrons is still in business, and that public health hasn't shut this place down. 2 women working the front, didn't wear gloves and were touching their hair and face while I was ordering. I thought common sense would be wash their hands before putting together my order but I was wrong. They continued to make the order. I was utterly disgusted, and didn't want to make a fuss, so I took my order to go and then straight to the trash. The rest of the restaurant was dated and who only knows how the staff cleans the kitchen and rest of the restaurant. I would stay away, plenty of other places to get a hot dog and fries in Chicago!

Stephen G.

Yelp
First and last time I will be ordering from this place. Placed my order via UberEats. I ordered Philly Cheesesteak and fries. The food arrived cold and the cheesesteak meat was dry with no flavor. I even found a couple of hairs in the sandwich. Tossed the food in the garbage where it belongs.
google avatar

Gregorio A.

Yelp
This place doesn't deserve to call itself a hot dog stand. Not in Chicago. Tasteless dog, soggy bun from the beginning, not even pickle spears! No love here. An embarassment to a great hot dog city
google avatar

Kai E.

Yelp
Free parking. Great dogs. Plenty of seating. Decent pricing! Been here twice and left full and satisfied both times. My only complaints are that the fries are pretty average (could use some extra salt or seasoning but at least they're crispy!) and the pickles are chips, not the traditional spear. Overall, awesome place to get that hot dog fix.
google avatar

Alaina L.

Yelp
Probably the best Italian beef sandwich I've ever had! Get it dipped with hot peppers!
google avatar

Shay R.

Yelp
Byron's is hands down the place to go for hot dogs and other guilty pleasure foods! I came across Byron's randomly on Grubhub. I'm still raving over how delicious the double cheese burger was that I ordered. My boyfriend devoured his two Chicago style hot dogs in a blink of an eye. I like Byron's because the food is simple but they found a way to make everything taste unbelievable. Byron's is definitely my go to place when I want to indulge in some fried foods. I would strongly recommend trying either the cheese burger or the Chicago style hotdog!
google avatar

Mandy J.

Yelp
TODAY IS NATIONAL HOT DOG DAY! That means, you eat hot dogs today. Byron's called our names so we stopped in at our local place. It was okay. We both ordered Chicago style dogs. They were good, with two exceptions...the bun fell apart quickly with the wet hot dog and the pickles were slices instead of a spear. All in all, good dog. Fries were also great. The service was a bit of a shit show today. They were training a new guy (bless his heart) and I don't think they were ready for how busy they would be given the national holiday today. On another day, I would imagine they'd have it together a bit more so I'm not gonna hold this against them. The interior is a little outdated and a little dirty. The food is what will have us stopping in again. But with some updating this place could easily bump its star count.

Ernestine B.

Yelp
The worst Italian Beef sandwich. It was very dry and flavorless, such a disappointment! I wanted to send it back!
google avatar

Nikki C.

Yelp
It is what it is... If you are looking for a solid drive-in diner type of experience, this place is PERFECT! When I want a good burger, I often go to Byron's. It's solid, good quality and it's affordable. You receive your food quickly, but it's NOT "fast food" - it's better and its fresh and everything is made to order. Today was the third time Ive had food from Byron's within the past 12 months, but it was my FIRST time walking into the place. I had it delivered the other two times. Anyway, the staff was very nice and accommodating, and let me customize my order. It was a very pleasant experience. I ordered at the counter and took the food to go. The staff chatted with me while I waited too! THE BURGER WAS AWESOME and I love all of the options for toppings. I also order Chicken Tenders and Fries for my friend. They were on point, and made well. If possible, GO INSIDE THE PLACE instead of drive through or delivery. It's better that way. Overall, I reccommend going in to the place and either dining in or order your take out food IN PERSON and then take it to go.
google avatar

Joshua S.

Yelp
I basically only order Italian Beef sandwiches from here. Not the best I've had, but far from the worst. I don't know if it's just me; I'm charming and I tip, even for carry out, but the portions are HUGE. Well worth the $. Bonus points for the parking lot.
google avatar

Elizabeth H.

Yelp
Ordered thru grub hub a lord Byron, chicago style hot dog and chili dog. The lord was a delicious burger. Loaded with everything, the bun contained its shape. Chili dog was average. The chicago style hot dog was a sloppy mess. Sloppy meaning the bun was soaked and gross. Interesting that the chili dogs bun was perfect despite being slathered in chili. I have had a Chicago style dog several times and never had a juicy drenched bun. I contacted grub hub to report my dissatisfaction. They proceeded to call the restaurant to see if this disgusting dog can be replaced. The female hefer refused to do anything and stated "well if you load it up with veggies, it's going to get soaked". Really?! WTF! Just based on this terrible service I would not recommend or ever order again. Welcome to America! Country of high standards even if it's just a hot dog.

Ryan H.

Yelp
I was very surprised to see that this place had bad reviews and especially for service. The one thing I love about their Chicago Hot Dog is they are good with slicing the tomatoes nicely. They put effort into preparing it and not just throwing together which I appreciate. Love this place!

Yelp
Even after moving out of the neighborhood we still make the drive to Byron's. Staff is all very nice and welcoming and the food is delicious!
