Yelp
Making our way through the Emeryville Public Market, it was actually somewhat challenging for us to decide on what we wanted to eat. I'm sure how hungry we were had something to do with it, but nearly every vendor/eatery looked and smelled so appealing! Of the bunch, the only one we could really rule out was Super Duper, but that had far more to do with how I've been to their SF locations countless times than if they're good (they are). However, after seeing someone walk by with a plate of nachos from C CASA, I immediately knew what I wanted to get! Of course, that led to the next problem - figuring out what to order. That is, in addition to the aforementioned nachos!
While you could argue it shouldn't be that big of a surprise, given how they've got one of the largest stalls inside Public Market, it's still worth noting that C CASA's menu feels notably larger than those of their neighbors. Beyond just having a bunch of different dishes to offer, like salads, bowls, tacos, nachos, taquitos, and quesadillas, the list of proteins they have is equally impressive, such as duck confit, Dungeness crab, and fingerling and new potatoes. It also doesn't hurt that have carvery-type meats too, like rotisserie chicken, Angus steak, and chile crusted chicken! Like I said - the menu has no shortage of interesting options to try!
-- PINEAPPLE AGUA FRESCA
Not bad, but more solid than spectacular. I liked how refreshing it was (they both were), but I wish this had a stronger taste of pineapple to it. That being said, might be on me for thinking it'd be closer to a pineapple juice.
-- STRAWBERRY AGUA FRESCA
This really hit the spot! The taste of the strawberry was a bit more pronounced than with the pineapple one and had a slightly sweeter taste to it (though, not in a sugary way).
-- NACHORIZOS - C CASA Chips, Chorizo Queso, Chorizo, Black Beans, Pico de Gallo, Chipotle Aioli, Avocado Serrano Crema, and Guacamole
Not sure if it's because I had a huge craving for nachos, but the portion seemed a bit light when it came out. However, this was great! The chips were crunchy, there was a fair amount of chorizo, and I loved how the aioli, crema, avocado, and pico de gallo complemented each other (a bit of spice and a cooling sort of creaminess).
-- STREET STYLE BAJA FISH TACOS - Tempura-style True Cod, Avocado, Green Apple C Slaw, Chipotle Aioli, Avocado Serrano Crema
On the one hand, this didn't taste too shabby. The batter was crispy, the fish was moist and flavorful, and I thought the apples in the slaw added a nice bit of freshness that balanced the aioli and crema. On the other, the pieces of fish in this weren't exactly huge...
Despite how the food was definitely above average, I'd be lying if I said the food here was wallet friendly. It's no surprise that the prices here (and at just about any of the other vendors at Public Market) are higher than what you could find elsewhere, as there's a certain premium that you expect being in a food hall like this. Even still, the value feels a bit short for the money. To be fair, even if it had been cheaper, I still would've wanted more of the nachos to feast on, but it was closer to a pile than a mound and the fish tacos, while good, weren't almost-$10-per-taco good.
Based purely on taste, I'd consider rounding up from THREE AND A HALF STARS, but they're closer to three when you put everything all together.
