Best Ice Cream Shops in Montreal - Eater Montreal

"NDG’s ice cream and sorbet of choice comes from the lovely Ca Lem, which over the years, has expanded to include five locations sprawled across the city. There’s a clear eye to Asia in its flavours, with options like taro, lychee, black sesame, and more." - Valerie Silva, Ashley Joseph

Went to Ca Lem for a late-night sweet treat, and it was definitely a gem! This local spot in the Old Port is a must-visit. We couldn’t decide on just one flavor, so we went with three: Citron Yuzu sorbet, Taro Mauve, and Lime Mojito Granita. All were incredible—great flavor profiles and not overpriced at all. The location itself has such a lively vibe, always bustling with people for a good reason. The music in the background, the neon lights, and the quirky compliments sticky notes on the bar all added to the fun atmosphere. The service was excellent too, with friendly staff making the experience even better. I’ll definitely be back soon for more of their delicious creations!

I had heard about this place for years. I finally went this year. I had the strawberry Litchi sorbet that was delicious. I enjoyed the sample of the blueberry matcha ice cream flavor that my mom devoured and loved the Grapefruit peach flavor as well. The prices compared to portion was very affordable. Also really enjoyed their brownie cookie. Shame on me for taking so long to come and enjoy. Im glad I went. I would definitely go back. If you haven't had a chance to go yet, you should orput it on your list for next year.

Google
Tried out Ca Lem in NDG because of a review in MTL Blog and it was a delight. I had the sorbet lime mojito and it was speckled with fresh mint and was delicious and refreshing. All lactose free and there are vegan versions as well. Nice setting for a sweet treat.

Google
This place is a true gem near the Loyola Campus. Cute place to sit and get ice cream with many flavors to choose from both scooped and soft serve. They are one of the few shops that change the flavor of the soft serve monthly which I love. Their ice cream colors are also so vibrant! Some of the most vibrant I've seen. Definitely coming back to try more flavors

Google
Calem ice cream is a little slice of happiness in every scoop! Steph puts her passion and attention to detail shine through in every flavor. The shop’s bright, cheerful vibe makes it the perfect spot to treat yourself and unwind. Can’t recommend it enough! 🍦💖✨

Google
Love their choices of ice cream flavors. Good quality of waffle cones Great ambiance and helpful staff. But before going here, do check their Instagram account as they keep on changing their ice-cream flavors.

Google
I really wanted to like this place, but unfortunately, the experience was disappointing. I tried one of their vegan options, and the flavor had a strong chemical aftertaste that was hard to ignore. My brother sampled a few as well and ultimately decided not to order anything because of the same issue. I went with the green-colored flavor, hoping for something refreshing, but sadly, it didn’t deliver. The concept is great, and I appreciate that they offer vegan choices, but the execution just wasn’t there this time. Very overpriced!

Google
Not sure how this subpar ice cream shop gets so many good reviews. They never have the soft serve flavour they show on insta. The hard ice cream lacks flavour and does not have a creamy texture.

Yelp
Been several years since my last visit to Ca Lem. They have multiple locations. 16 flavours and we sampled several. You can sample two at a time. Scoops are $4.10 (single) or $6.35 (double/soft serve), while pints are $13.00 (500mL). - Double scoop ($6.35) - citron yuzu sorbet and fraise litchi sorbet. Real bits of lychee were a pleasant surprise. Lemon yuzu had a slight bitter note. Texture is good but melty

Yelp
Super cute ice cream shop! The decor is so cozy and fun. Great place to come have a treat and enjoy. The flavors are unique and super tasty. The staff are very friendly and will let you try a couple flavors if you want! Love this spot :)

Yelp
Lots of vegan options. There's a Bebe option which is great for small appetite. Place was clean and very welcoming

Yelp
This place almost makes me wish I was still a Concordia Loyola campus student, almost. It's just the cutest place, like the little sister of Kem Coba. Unique flavours in soft serve and hard ice cream. Cute, pastel decor with outdoor seating and an post-it and Instagram wall. Got the strawberry and lemon soft serve and the girl who made my cone did an excellent job. My ice cream had the cutest dimples and elf hat, made me feel bad for ruining it with my mouth. I kinda wanted to keep it looking perfect by just not eating it but then it would've melted. the flavours were on point, so refreshing and they complemented each other well. Line ups aren't too long even if it does look like their are lots of people. They accept cards and they have a punch card system, now I have to go back!
google avatar

Yelp
Just had to give a shoutout to their awesome online ordering services during the pandemic. You can order everything online and they will tell you when to pick it up. Since you also pay online, all they do when you arrive is give your name and they will give you the bag with your items inside. Everything is carefully packed. The staff were wearing a mask so it definitely makes it feel safer to eat their ice cream.

Yelp
Little out of the way, far way in NDG, but Ca Lem is worth it for a trip. The outside, is charmingly setup with cute benches with fake grass where you can sit on. Before you go inside, there is a porch with benches too. Inside, it is a petite counter with some Nice exotic flavorful ice creams. By the window, two more benches, one side of the wall, bunch post it from all the customers. The opposite wall has bunch background pictures for us to take pictures of our ice cream with cool background. I had two scoops of ice cream, taro and pineapple with Mexican spices. I loved Taro; the sweet factor of it, balanced my ice cream deliciously with the opposite taste the pineapple ice cream, which was little scratchy in my throat. It's an adorable spot to hang with great company. Very friendly service; loved it! Will go back soon.

Yelp
Simply delicious, unique flavours, super friendly staff and colourful decor! We love to meet friends there and soak up the happy vibes of everyone enjoying their ice cream!

Yelp
Great place to get some ice cream especially love the fact that they also now have a café and a place where you can order food so this place is really like an all in one I love the fact that they're always changing their ice cream flavours so there's always a little something to look forward to

Yelp
I had a Choco-Mango soft serve last weekend and it was delicious! I am not usually a fan of soft ice cream, but the combination of chocolate and mango really hit the spot. It was slightly tangy, not too sweet and and a good consistency. A little extra creaminess would be perfect, but it was still very good. Ca Lem ice cream shop is pretty minimalist, but I like it. It completely lacks any decorations, except for post-its filled out by customers and scattered across the wall. The staff is friendly and is happy to hand out as many tasters as you like. I would definitely return!

Yelp
I don't know where to start! I'm obsessed with Ca Lem. I have come every week this summer to try their soft serve of the week and they have not once disappointed me. Their flavors are always well thought out and absolutely delicious!! Make sure to go on the weeks where they offer the blueberry crumble or the key lime pie!! They even offer hard ice cream flavors that are unique and exciting (sometimes I get two in one visit because I can't choose between the soft serve or a hard ice cream). This place also has the sweetest staff. They are super polite and efficient; lines tend to go by fast. Even dropped my ice cream once right after paying and they gave me another one without second thought. Also, the building is extremely cute. It's a great spot for insta worthy pics . Seriously in love with this place. Would recommend to anyone.
google avatar

JiaYin C.

Yelp
Their soft serve icecream changes every week in a rotation basis! One of the best ice cream places I've tried. Their icecream are soft and creamy and not overly sweet, which is perfect! Only thing is that they are far away from the metro, but it's definitely worth the travel time!

Yelp
Absolutely love this spot for ice cream/sorbet. Located in NDG, Ca Lem has to be one of the most creative ice cream bars you will come across. There is so much imagination poured into the joint, from a wonder woman/superman bathroom to a custom instagram photo lounge that you can pick various backgrounds to beautify your ice cream cone. The menu changes regularly with soft serve, hard serve, sorbet, iced coffees, milkshakes. Flavors are pretty unique like durian, lychee strawberry, sea salt caramel, black sesame, etc..There are vegan options as well. Once a flavour nears an end you can purchase pints of the left over ice cream. A friendly spot for family and friends.

Yelp
So after hearing rave reviews about this place for ages, our girl gang decided that, on a cold and muggy June evening, it was a good idea to venture to this NDG shop for some good old ice cream to lift our spirits; it worked! Walking into the cosy and busy space, albeit the weather, we were promptly welcome by the ladies on staff who took the time to listen to us "oh" and "ah" at the interesting flavour selections and helping us decide on our perfect cone. After plenty of sampling, I decided to go for the black sesame coco ash for its nutty and not too sweet flavouring, and a second scoop (yes, full size second scoop, okay) of my all time favourite ice cream flavour coffee; only this one was a "viet" coffee which is slightly sweeter than what I'm used to. I opted for a cup as I figured, sloppy me, the cone would be dangerous. The two scoops were perfectly balanced and my mouth was happy. The flavours were intense and the ice cream itself was good but I think the flavour selection and variety is what would draw me back to this place. They had a melon and strawberry soft serve (yes, I tasted that one too) which was very popular with the rest of the gang. They switch up the soft serve selection regularly so that keeps it fun and different. I would definitely make a stop next time I'm in the 'hood and you should too!

Yelp
The power of social media brought us to this place. Arriving in a housing area, they renovated this old place into an ice cream/coffee shop. Outside looked really nice and charming. Inside, not so much. The good: Really cute outside sitting area, nicely decorated. Lactose free soft ice cream. Various hard ice cream flavours (with lactose). Friendly staff. Cute "Instagram worthy" walls inside. Good ice cream. The bad: Flavours gets "bland" after a while, as all three of us said so. The coffee area was closed and everything in that section looks abandoned, which kills the mood. Cups and bowls are REALLY small. It is definitely a cute place where residents will go from time to time. But l doubt outsiders, like us, will go more than once.
google avatar

Jacynthe S.

Yelp
This is my new favourite ice cream place!!!! They have so many unique flavours of hard ice cream with even vegan options. They also have the soft serve flavour of the week that comes out every Wednesday. The place is fun, crazy busy but that does not stop the staff from being very efficient and super friendly. Cute decor and they even have a sitting area outside that is beyond lovely. The waiting line can get pretty long at times but it goes very and to be honest the taste of the ice cream and the price is worth the wait. They also have a stamp card and you can get free ice cream once full
google avatar

Yelp
I wanted to come here after seeing friends post their ice creams on instagram last summer but never made it so I was excited when I saw on yelp that there was an unofficial yelp event. It was nice to see familiar faces and eat ice cream and drink slushy drinks. It was so good! You have the option of eating outside or inside. Outside at night the hanging lightbulbs are lit. The inside is small but cute. The staff is super patient and nice. They let me try almost all the flavours before I finally made up my mind on what I wanted. I ended up having the mango and matcha flavours. My boyfriend loved the mango. It was good and sweet but matcha is more my jam. It was really hard to decide because all the flavours are good. I will definitely be back!
google avatar

Gia Loc D.

Yelp
Ca lem is definitely a summer staple here in Montreal * This combo was delicious, but the lime was a bit bitter on its own. I wish they had the option of just coconut because it was great. *

Yelp
When weather is almost calling for pumpkin spice latte but you don't care and call everyday as National Ice Cream Day. Ask me what's better than Blueberry Crumble Pie and Tahitian Vanilla Bean swirl, topped with Buttery Oat Crumbles? Here's a little secret: It's made from scratch by my girlfriend.

小七

Yelp
Environment: bright, clean, there are post-it notes Taste: Ice cream tastes great, with more than ten flavors Service: awesome, warm, patient, considerate for you Parking: there are paid parking spaces Price: 5 ice cream balls 3 cones 16

Yelp
This new ice cream place has the absolute most amazing flavours hidden in NDG in a colourful house converted in an ice cream shop! I tried the hard and soft ice cream I can say I definitely loved the soft the best! I was so happy when I saw they had a cinnamon toast crunch ice cream which was my ultimate favourite childhood cereal! Definitely worth the try and will go back as they continue to innovate and create fun flavours!
google avatar

Christina T.

Yelp
I really like their sesame flavor ice cream and they have uber potato flavor as well. The textures and flavors are one of a kind. There is no line up on a Sunday evening, and the price for two x two scoops of ice cream are around 11,05$. This place up to pair with kem coba.
google avatar

Sindy H.

Yelp
You can never get bored with this place, new flavors all the time. The ice cream and sorbets are always fresh made with real ingredients. You can tell it's quality ! The location is perfect and the seating area inside and out is just adorable and welcoming. The staff is always helpful and friendly, they know their stuff and will always recommend some flavors depending on what you're in the mood for. My husband wanted something sour and they didn't have passionfruit which is amazing btw.. so the girl recommended blueberry and he was very pleased with it. We are there almost every weekend... so sad that "Winter is Coming"
google avatar

Mary H.

Yelp
Saw this by coincidence on Facebook and couldn't resist going there to try the soft served ice cream! It did not disappoint and the best is there wasn't any line up like at Kem Koba! They change the flavour of the soft served every Wednesday I think...so definitely will be back later this week to try the new flavour! The flavour of their ice cream is asian influenced so I'm happy to be able to find something that pleases my pallet more than the regular chocolate ice cream.
google avatar

Yelp
A gem of a place! We go here a few times in the summer even though it takes us a good hour or so to bus it. WORTH IT. The friendly staff knows what to recommend, and you honestly can't go wrong between all the exotic flavours of ice cream. It's also a photo-worthy place. The inside is cutesy with a wall of customer post-it notes & drawings, and the outside with vibrant picnic tables!
google avatar

Katie K.

Yelp
Friendly service, very creamy and flavorful ice cream! They have different flavor every week, and we got to try their watermelon flavor. It was good and refreshing, but I personally preferred their regular ice cream. Loved all the flavors we tried! We ended up choosing Viet coffee and taro. WOOO taro was soooo good! Their cones are good too (I hate when the cone part sucks). Overall, I recommend this place if you are in the area! Such a cute place to take pictures too!
google avatar

Eden L.

Yelp
We were here around 5pm. Several people were waiting ahead of me. No crazy long line is very nice. I had pineapple basil and black sesame flavours. Both of them tasted great. The basil really can stand out and feels refreshing. The sesame was so rich and grainy. That's the real stuff. The one missing star is due to the ice crystals inside the scoop which ruined the creamy and smooth texture of a perfect ice cream. I blame the freezer which probably didn't do its job well . A lovely little place. Will come back for sure for other flavours.
google avatar

Steve H.

Yelp
Best ice cream in the neighbourhood. Love the variety of flavours, especially the vegan options which taste great. I especially like the swirl flavour of the day
google avatar

Narendgie M.

Yelp
This place is amazing. I kinda regret I waited so long to go there. They are open only during spring/ summer and it's definitely a must add to your list. A variety of fun choices. Friendly staff and vibrant atmosphere/ decoration.
google avatar

Yelp
A Montréal West treasure, this crèmerie has so many delightful options. They have so many unique flavours that aren't available elsewhere (lychee, ca phe sua da). They also have limited edition sorbet flavours that changes every week. So sad it won't be open all year but I'm looking forward to when it opens again in the summer. One of the weekly sorbet flavours I got was an apple and cereal flavoured ice cream.
google avatar

Andrew N.

Yelp
Ca Lem serves up some exotic and unique flavours that's perfect for the hot summer days. Ca Lem has 18 delightful flavours that intrigue the consumer with flavours like Pandan, Taro, and Vietnamese coffee. They also have vegan friendly flavours as they offer up sorbet options. Here's my rundown: Food - I got the Mojito & Passionfruit Sorbet because lowkey I'm lactose sensitive and not a fan of overly sweet options. The tartness of the flavours was great and the mojito sorbet actually tasted like a mojito which is one of my favourite drinks to get. The passionfruit sorbet wasn't overly sweet and a nice fruity touch to the mojito scoop. My friend also got the cotton candy & strawberry carnival twist soft serve and surprisingly I was digging it. It wasn't too sweet and the soft serve texture was really decadent and didn't taste artificial. The soft serve flavour actually changes on a weekly basis so this is great for those ice cream fanatics who like trying new flavours. Atmosphere - This place is really cute. One wall has notes that you can write on and leave your mark at the shop and another wall features textiles that are perfect for instagramming your ice cream. There's no tables to sit at but rather there are benches (2 of them lined within the store) and there's places to sit outside by the patio. Service - Service was really great here and I appreciated how you could try a sample of each flavour before purchasing your ice cream. Price - It was $5.75 for the two scoops or the soft serve ice cream when we came here last month! Verdict - Overall, I was thoroughly impressed by the ice cream here. The ice cream was light yet flavourful and the whole shop is made for instagram as it as a very cute aesthetic to it. Definitely recommend stopping by this shop if you're in Montreal and I would highly recommend trying their soft-serve options.
google avatar

Saida S.

Yelp
Wish this spot was open year round (tears).. I guess im part of the rare people who enjoys ice cream regardless of the season. This ice cream shop is so pretty (colorful walls, nice outdoor area) they also have unexpected flavors like purple sweet potato, mojito & the prices are fair. They also give you a reward card which is nice if you go often. I totally recommend
google avatar

Jennifer M.

Yelp
OMG just always pick one of the special soft-serve cones - you will not regret it! Easily the best place to visit this summer for an ice cream date or family outing. Great service, creative flavors, and an insta-worthy treat that will leave you smiling. I will keep coming back!
google avatar

Crewe D.

Yelp
Had the soft serve with a swirl. It was very good but I wish I had gotten a scoop. Very original and tasty sounding flavours, will have to go back. Also kudos on keep the line moving, was shocked at how efficient they were.
google avatar

Czarina E.

Yelp
I was super excited for ca lem to reopen this summer, and they sure did not disappoint! They offer interesting flavors of ice cream--I can't decide which flavor is my fave. Nutella? Oreo? Mojito? Hibiscus? Don't make me choose! Every week I look forward to trying their new flavor of soft serve. The photo attached showcases the taro and passion fruit twist. Yum! Can't wait for them to bring back the london fog. I pass by ca lem whenever I walk home from school/work, and it's always so hard to resist making pit stop for a delicious treat.
google avatar

Shiran B.

Yelp
I'm honestly very confused by this place. It's like the ice cream desperately wants to be good but then it decided last minute it's not. I dont get the hype. We tried the swirly fruit loops , mango , cinnamon crunch and literally left us the strangest margarine film in our mouths.. the one who had the mango lived for it but that's because shes vegan and no thanks. But honestly the place is super cute and very Instagram worthy but as far as "ice cream" go... can we go to dolce vita?????
google avatar

Stéphanie H.

Yelp
My friend and I came here on a Friday afternoon and contrary to what i've heard, there was no crowd. The outside is very charming, colorful and inviting. The selection was good, so much that I could not decide at all. The girl at the counter was very helpful and suggested some flavor combos. You can always try some flavors if you are indecisive like I am. I ended up getting the Black Sesame Coco Ash one along with a scoop of the London Fog Tea. The Black sesame one is not the regular one that you can get anywhere. It is of a very deep true black color, so be careful because it does stain a lot! The London Fog Tea was my favorite. It was more bitter than it was sweet, so you could really taste the aroma of the tea. My friend got Coco Basil (vegan) as well as the Mojito sorbet. The Coco Basil is very subtle in flavors, which is what I expect from combining an herb to a dessert. The basil was not overpowering at all. As for the Mojito one, i was pleasantly surprised by the freshness that the mint brought, just as the drink would. All flavors were excellent. They were all slightly sweetened, but rich in flavors, which was just perfect. The fresh ingredients they use definitely shine through. They also have 2 soft serve flavors that change everyday. This place is far from where I live, but I will certainly make my way back sooner than later to try all the other flavors!
google avatar

Yelp
I love ice cream but I would never call myself obsessed. But I've been back so many times now that I've lost count. Ca Lem is my go-to ice cream place. My favourite thing about Ca Lem is that they have a new flavour of the week every Wednesday morning, which is exciting and keeps us going back! I could walk 10 minutes to Dairy Queen or Bilboquet in my area but I choose to walk 45 minutes each way to get there so that my Fitbit and tastebuds are satisfied. I also love that their Instagram feed is so visually striking! The decor inside Ca Lem is inviting and very well-thought out for us Instagram users. It's not a large space and during the warm summer nights, the lineups get pretty long but it moves along quickly. I love the outdoor seating and all-around great staff. You can ask to try a sample of any flavour you might be unsure about and they're more than happy to help. The ice cream flavours themselves have vibrant colours and interesting flavour combinations. I think the most disappointing thing about Ca Lem is that they close at 9pm, which I find pretty early and has gotten us sometimes racing over after dinner to make it in time for closing! I love it so much that I've gotten a few others obsessed with it too!
google avatar

Joyce A.

Yelp
The limited edition sorbet was to die for! Line up was crazy but it's all worth it! I love the interior - so instagram worthy. Would definitely comeback and recommend!
google avatar

Rebecca B.

Yelp
Absolutely love the ice cream here! The ambiance is so family-friendly and you see a lot of customers stopping by and hanging out in their front lawn! The flavors are delicious and creamy and I love the Asian flavors that they offer! The colors are vibrant and really scream summertime. I'd really love to come during a different time of the year (not summer) to see the other flavors that they offer!
google avatar

Karen L.

Yelp
A little off the beaten path, Ca Lem is located in a fairly residential area. The choices were well explained, colour coded, and you can sample a bunch of flavours. Thank goodness it was the middle of a weekday... I didn't feel the stress of 20 people in line behind me wondering wtf is taking so long. Single scoops cost around $3. That's very reasonable!
google avatar

Christian C.

Yelp
They have a summer long shop in Atwater market and I tried their coconut milk based icecream, there is a Pandan flavor that is a perfect Vietnamese inspired choice I needed! The sorbets are other great vegan options and I'm here for them.
google avatar

Anna C.

Yelp
Can't believe it's taken me this long to get to Calem. I saw on their Instagram that the soft serve flavor of the week was chocolate and raspberry swirl (my favourite!) and decided it was time to head there. It didn't disappoint! Service was quick and really friendly. They had lots of benches set up to sit, some in the shade and some in the sun, which was really nice. I'll make sure to come back to try the taro flavor that everyone raves about.
google avatar

Ali A.

Yelp
Very fun, so yummy :) Don't miss trying the ice creams at Ca Lem The place is vividly colourful and there was a rather long line up. The black scoop (something like sesame ash?!!) is so famous i tried it and it was a new experience in my ice cream adventures. Decent prices, fast and polite staff, easy to find parking (it was a Sunday though).
google avatar

Yulia O.

Yelp
Best ice cream ever! Great variety of flavors for any customer. After one time try it becomes an addiction! Will miss u guys! Waiting for the next season!
google avatar

Julien F.

Yelp
The good and exotic flavours come with a price tag... Friendly staff, good food, nice atmosphere, however a little expensive. I would recommend it.
google avatar

Diana T.

Yelp
Their flavours are amazing! Each person is allowed to sample two flavors. I tried black sesame and pandan, while my friend sampled mojito and strawberry lychee. They were all great. What I really liked about them was the fact that the flavours were very present and packed a punch! I was surprised that the black sesame flavour was so enjoyable, but I felt it was a little too rich for me so I went with strawberry lychee which was light and refreshing. My friend got an ice coffee and we both agreed that it was the best we've ever tried. It was incredibly strong so there were no worries about the taste being diluted by the ice. Although it was strong, it still had the perfect amount of bitterness and sweetness. Also, the shop is extremely cute! They have a colourful patio outside and a large table where you can enjoy your ice cream.
google avatar

Lindsay S.

Yelp
I've had almost every hard ice cream flavour at Ca Lem as well as a bunch of their soft serve twists and it is always TO DIE FOR. Such a cute little shop in NDG with a bunch of instagrammable walls to post with your ice cream in front of. The staff are always super friendly and willing to let you taste every flavour with a smile! My personal favourites are always the soft twists but don't be shy to try the others!
google avatar

HanDan W.

Yelp
Always come back for their ice cream! They have variety of flavors, my favorite is the Hong Kong milk tea. Staffs r very friendly. You can try different flavors before make ur decisions and don't forget to get point card as well.
google avatar

Yelp
Ca Lem is the ice cream shop you didn't know you needed. They offer a variety of unique flavours the most unique is probably the black charcoal one. On top of that every week they have different limited flavours of soft serve made in house like this french toast crunch and apple flavour. Try a different flavour every week cause this place is awesome
