"Berkeley’s Cabañas Cafe has closed, East Bay Nosh also reports. Angel Rodriguez opened the restaurant in 2022, serving Chiapas-style Mexican fare, though one of the restaurant’s specialties was its rendition of kurtos, the Hungarian pastry also known as “chimney cake,” which it served with ice cream and affogatos." - Paolo Bicchieri

The food served here is not worth the cost. I ordered a chicken salad, it came after half an hour and it felt like the last batch of ingredients were dumped in my plate.

Google
Absolutely BOMB chilaquiles. Huge portions. Seasoned well 👩‍🍳💋*chefs kiss* Cooks are amazing and workers are super nice. Coffee is great too, there’s a little kick to it and it’s perfectly sweet. Not too bitter or too sweet. One of my top places to go now.

Google
Used to pass by this everyday and thought it was so mid but if you order the 5$ churro ice cream dessert it will change your life actually never buying dessert anywhere else and it smells ok and the bathroom is really clean. 10/10 cafe and its on northside when I first got this dessert I knew I’d never return to my old ways, I was a stupid fool in Plato’s cave unaware of how beautiful the outside world could be. This dessert is the only thing you need if you want to transcend the shackles of everyday life. It’s that amazing

Google
asada fries were very disappointing. the toppings were lackluster and not worth the $14 i paid for. i expected a more put together meal. i cant recommend such an expensive meal given the quality, but it was nice that it came with a free drink which was better than the fries.

AVOID DURING WINTER BREAK. This place was great until they hired two new clueless people for winter break. I ordered a steak quesadilla which I usually get. As soon as I bit into it I knew the cook was new. EXTREMELY OILY. Tablespoons on tablespoons of Oil dripping out of box into the togo bag. This guy has never cooked fajita veggies before. NO STEAK. They are so lazy they used BLAND carne asada meat instead. Normally they cook fresh steak that is seasoned well. SLOPPY QUESADILLA that falls apart when you pick it up. Hardly any cheese. You couldn’t make a worse quesadilla if you tried. It wasnt even tried to be put together firmly. 0/10, avoiding this place till the normal staff get back Also, WiFi was downgraded to 1mbps lol

Google
Do not believe the hours they posted on Google Map! On May 31, I ordered a blueberry waffle on Snackpass. The order was completed automatically without me receiving any service or food, because the restaurant is closed. And the restaurant keeps closed since then and there is no way for me to get refunded.

Google
We had the horchata latte, cappuccino and banana bread. They were all quite good but not very distinguished. We enjoyed the service from the staff and the place had a clean bathroom and plenty of places to study at.

Google
Their breakfast burritos are really bad… I ordered two times, the rice and potatoes are hard and not well cooked, and from one time there was a strip of plastic in the wrap… I had high hope when they first opened, just sad that they are not dedicated to serve good food with such a good location. Their employee are very nice.

Yelp
Casual cafe with a indie seating or tables. Perfect to meet up with friends or chill by yourself. I got an espresso and a ham and egg burrito, for a total of $15. Not bad for the area. The expresso was good and hit the spot. The ham and egg burrito was filling and pretty big! Service was pretty quick. I got my food in like 5 minutes of ordering! I would come here again.

David A.

Yelp
Tried their coconut milk, chocolate ice cream. It was $4 and absolutely not worth it. The ice cream tasted off, maybe due to the coconut milk. Also had a friend try that ice cream and she agreed that it tasted sour and was not good. Disappointed

Kenneth R.

Yelp
It's hard not to like this new incarnation of the Northside Cafe. It's spacious inside and was not very busy for lunch on the day that we visited. The portions are ample to generous, while prices are set with the student budget in mind. We had a hummus wrap and the daily special ($9.99) -- three quesabirria tacos, served with a side of broth. Both were palate-pleasers.

Yelp
Great open seating and ambience. Love the wall mural and metal cutlery. There was a sign promoting sustainability by offering a discount for bringing your own cup in for coffee; however to-go containers were still plastic boxes. Food came out pretty but was average. The eggs were a bit rubbery and the chips had no flavor. Got to try the cucumber lime, pineapple, and horchata Al frescas and loved them all! Would definitely come back to try the Kurtos cones with ice cream

Yelp
Been here two times and although I do love the friendly staff, the food just isn't cutting it. $13 for a small BLTA sandwich. It was good, but it's just a regular BLTA that's small and the size of my palm. There are two other sandwich shops on the same street for less money. I'll go here for the convenience because the food does come out in about 5 minutes depending, but not my first choice to go. Another visit, I got a caramel macchiato with soy milk and the soy milk was extremely sour and the drink was overall terrible. Trust, I don't expect much for surrounding cafes or amazing coffees... However, the coffee had to be tossed immediately and that was $6+ down the drain :-( I saw her open a new bottle of soy milk so not sure if it was expired or what but worst coffee I've ever had sadly. I don't recommend coming here for coffee or drinks but will recommend other food items if you're in a time crunch and trying to get a quick meal! They have plenty of seating with nice atmosphere.

Yelp
This was my first time back since a Yelp Elite event a few months ago, and my experience was still fantastic! I can't get over the great lighting and convenient location. Cabañas is incredibly spacious with natural sunlight. It's the perfect place to grab a meal and catch up on work. You can order in advance (or at the restaurant) via Snackpass which is used by a lot of students around campus. I got the Fish Salad and Dirty Matcha (house matcha mixed with a shot of espresso). The Fish Salad was delicious and the perfect amount of food. The Dirty Matcha was also solid. It's on the sweeter side (and a bit powdery) but still a good drink. A lot of people came in and out of the restaurant while I was here, so it seems like most people are placing to-go orders. I highly recommend stopping by and sitting down, though, especially if you're debating between Cabañas and another cafe!

Andrew H.

Yelp
Pretty solid overall. Got the 3 birria tacos; if you order on snackpass you can get a free agua fresca. Service was quick and the food tasted good. Birria wasn't dry and the salsas complimented the tacos well. Looked like there was ample seating inside but also good for grab-and-go.

Yelp
Finally. For years I have been wandering earth to find the chimichanga that could stand up to its insides. Something that wasn't a loaf of grease. Something that wasn't a log of sog. And something fulfilling and hearty. This corner spot nails it. This chimi is large, in charge and not shy about its will to fill. The fry was perfect! I got chicken. Great balance of rice, cheese, beans and meat. I was not left for want. Also, people were gettin after plates of tacos al pastor on their cart outside that looked yummo AND don't sleep on the cucumber lime agua fresca. It's the spa for your mouth after you may or may not have eaten an entire chimichanga. This place isn't your hot date night digs and very much screams college vibe, but I couldn't be bothered because my focus was full steam on my fried burrito beast.

Yelp
Family owned and operated, nestled right across from UC berkeley campus. The chilaquiles is soo good! The sauce, made the dish! Eggs, red onion, avocado, crema, and chips made my taste buds happy. The avocado toast was on a sweet soft bread roll which was different. The bread was not crunchy but everything on top was delicious. The french toast tasted like a cinnamon roll and i enjoyed every bite. Prices are reasonable $5- 15 per dish, and drinks pools creative but I was not able to try. Yelp check in gets you a FREE fresca!

Selena L.

Yelp
Grabbed a sandwich here for lunch, pretty mid. I tried the turkey cranberry club, and the cranberry sauce was watered down and kind of flavorless, and just made parts of the bread slightly soggy. Reasonably sized sandwich for the price though

Anne L.

Yelp
Unfortunately this place was incredibly disappointing. Food was so bland and expensive. I don't know how hard it is to mess up nachos but they did it. At first it looked appetizing but taste wise it was a awful. chicken was chewy, avocado was brown, cheese was nonexistent, chips were stale or soggy. My friend had the veggie burrito and couldn't finish it either bc it was so bad as well.

Grace G.

Yelp
The bake me up was very underwhelming, the bread was thin and soggy. but the Wi-Fi is good and there's good seating, and outlets from what I can remember

S. R.

Yelp
Is this place still open?? Assuming it's not as it's dark inside. I can't tell as we zip by daily on the shuttle. Can't really rate it honestly as Yelp is insisting I do....

Jairo C.

Yelp
Don't get the super burrito it's not super at all n cost 17$. It also comes with NO CHIPS. maybe something else off the menu definitely not worth the 17$. Better off going to Taco Bell

Nury G.

Yelp
There service and ambiance was beyond my expectations. We went for my son's 18th birthday celebration, and boy did they deliver. The food was exceptional, there was 6 of of us, I didn't get to take a picture of all the delicious dishes. The birthday boy was happy with his favorite dish, chilaquiles rojo, and scrambled eggs . My son's girlfriend who attends Berkley, had actually never been there and really enjoyed their chocolate chip pancakes, while her father enjoyed a Chorizo burrito. My daughter enjoyed a plain Belgian waffle, while I did the avocado toast and my husband did the cabanas pancakes. As you can see we all had varied tastes and there was something in the menu for everyone. There is was also a great selection of coffee, soft drinks , agua frescas, and sangria to choose from. What really made it special is that they had a candle and were able to change the music to play "las mañanitas" for our son at the end and we sand him Happy Birthday on his 18th .

Yelp
This place replaced Northside Cafe. And its much worse.. Open at 730am but they don't take orders until 8am. The food is mediocre and overpriced for small portions. Sad that Northside cafe was replaced with this garbage. This is a big pass. Try any other breakfast spot around UCB. Edit: I don't care if its a family owned business. I care about quality of food and service. Yelp and Google are the only way to voice any concerns with businesses now because of businesses like Cabanas Cafe, who are actively hostile to customers IN their restaurant and online. I mean you'd think I was trepassing in someone's house the way the server told us they won't take orders until 8AM. If this is the standard of service from Cabanas Cafe, then they deserve to close. Just because you are family-owned, doesn't mean you are justified in treating customers like crap. Also I didn't lie about their open hours. I walked in at 7:30AM. The lady at the counter rudely said they won't take orders until 8AM. And then ignored me thereafter. That's not misinformation. That's poor service.

Kim C.

Yelp
I really wanted to give this place more stars but it is unbelievably expensive. The cappuccino pictured was $8.50 with a small tip and it was not even hot. The coffee itself is actually delicious but the presentation was really lacking. I'll give this place one more try if they bring their prices down. Everything was super expensive in there And this is a student restaurant.

Eric C.

Yelp
Really good food, really unique coffee flavors, I enjoy this place. If you want good food with the sun shining in the windows and coffee flavors you don't see everywhere you got to check this place out! Chorizo burrito is my Go to.

Michael S.

Yelp
I came in on a Tuesday around 11 AM hoping to beat the lunch rush. The place was not busy, maybe a couple orders ahead of me as I ordered the quesabirria lunch special~$13 with tax. It took them over 20 minutes to prepare 3 soggy, flavorless quesabirrias, and not even an apology for the long ass wait despite there being 3 people behind the counter. I'm extremely disappointed, I have ordered coffee here before but would never order food again. Not worth it.

Patricia C.

Yelp
Came here for a quick caffeine pick me up and ordered an iced matcha latte with oat milk, which was advertised in front of their store as $5.55 + $1 (oat milk). Imagine my surprise when the total came out to be $8.23. From this price alone, I was expecting an out of body experience from the first sip. Instead, the latte was pure sugar and left a sheen of powder in my mouth. From the looks of it, the food looked good, but I can't justify a place that charges $8 for subpar drinks.

Ana Nalleli T.

Yelp
I loved the food.. everything tasted really Good., honestly I was very surprised how good the Chicken pesto sandwich, Quesabirrias and Berry was... We had great customers service., and the ambiance is friendly a lots of students stop by to get they Cafecito.

Randall B.

Yelp
Their new bread was offered to me as a sample on a hot day while I was struggling with some code. I felt like I was going to grab a snack when a kind young man offered this to me. I asked of it was cream filled when he offered because I was lactose intolerant. I was just being cautious and before I know it, he says he'll go back and get some Nutella and berries to go with it! What a score! This is a delicious and light pastry. It has a nice elastic feel so I chose to stretch and tear it in strips, bot caring about the delicious mess on my fingers. Wow, what a treat! Highly recommend. It's also nice to see that the employees all seem quite kind and hardworking. Really great spot for a quick bite or drink!

Audio F.

Yelp
When businesses change ownership you never know what will happen, unfortunately here it went downhill. I believe this place used to be called northside cafe or something similar to that, and it was half way decent nothing special but pretty good food and coffee. Now the food here and other offerings are sub par, also pretty overpriced. If you want coffee go up half a block on either side of the street, if you want tacos go across the street to El Talpense, much better food over there.

Rozhan R.

Yelp
We ate lunch here and I tried their steak quesadilla. The portion was great and it tasted really good. The salsa tasted very good as well. I highly recommend the place!

Tej S.

Yelp
The lady helping me was not very friendly, almost like helping was a nuisance for her. There was only one other person in the cafe, so wasn't like she was busy. Coffee was okay/and the vegetarian burrito was not good at all. More than half of it was filled with just lettuce.

Simone M.

Yelp
Was craving something sweet and was stopped by the Cabanas Cafe signs out front. The service was great, very friendly staff! I got the queens of cones which i chose vanilla ice cream for the base and came with fresh cut strawberries, strawberry syrup and a choice Nutella. The Kurtos it comes in paired perfectly and came out fresh and warm. Saw that the ice cream is vegan too which is a plus!!

Briona W.

Yelp
The staff here a very nice and welcoming! I ordered a breakfast croissant with ham & it was good!

Caroline M.

Yelp
Amazing food. Live the blend of the menu and the avocado toast was honestly the best I've ever had. Just opened and recommend highly ti check it out

Ulises C.

Yelp
I was extremely excited to find this spot. I ordered the classic toast and Cabañas pizza. Both came with amazing presentation. The price was really affordable for the presentation and quality of the dish. The ingredients were fresh and the bread was freshly baked. Highly recommended

Ashley H.

Yelp
Great place easy access for students. Right outside of North Gate. Great food and amount for a great price.

Robert E.

Yelp
It took 20 minutes to get one latte and there was hardly anyone there. I also had a feeling orders made after mine was made beforehand. 20 minutes mean a lot in the morning

Peter S.

Yelp
Had an excellent chicken pesto sandwich and a large latte. The latte was a little weak, but the nice fellow at the counter added an extra shot at no charge. After that it was a tasty latte. Nice airy room to sit and have a nice conversation and a meal.

Eric Z.

Yelp
Service and ambiance is immaculate! Food came in fast. Definitely recommend coming here!

Noah T.

Yelp
I had their chicken and pesto sandwich which was well-seasoned, had nice proportions of cheese, chicken, pesto, and veggies, and was overall delicious. I tried the dirty matcha out of sheer curiosity (it seemed like an uncomplementary pairing) and was pleasantly surprised--it's quite tasty. I wish prices here were lower, but that's kind of an issue for Berkeley more broadly. Would recommend!

Yessica B.

Yelp
I came for the breakfast special but was sold on the chilakiles, they give you a red and green salsa personally I've never been such a fan of green salsa so to me it was just not what I wanted. on the other hand the red salsa was good but I didn't like that they give you baby tomatoes and raw onions on top that was unnecessary and not something most people want when ordering chilakiles, it come with their "famous" Kurtos that's also something that made me get this plate , I wish they would specify that it's not sweat I was expecting it to the be the sugar coated version instead they stuffed it with chilakiles and very little bean oh and the plate needs beans !!! All In All I would say if you are looking for authentic Latin flavors this is not the place .

Anton G.

Yelp
Unique and delicious take on french toast! Uses a kurto instead of traditional bread, which tastes a like combination of a cinnamon roll and fresh pretzel. Will definitely be back.

Eli M.

Yelp
This was a rather nice place to chill with friends. The chicken salad was good and the ambiance was casual yet relaxing.

Laura B.

Yelp
portions wayy bigger than i expected, you really get your money's worth!!! and the espresso bar drinks are the best i've had in the area!

Marcus S.

Yelp
Super clean establishment. Friendly. I ordered the quesbirria combo after seeing it come out sizzling like 3 times before I put my order in.

Nadia L.

Yelp
The location is ideal for students who primarily study around the north side of campus. I enjoyed their matcha latte and chicken pesto sandwich a lot. The turkey cranberry club was kind of disappointing though, much too mayo on the one I was given and not enough turkey. The cranberry sauce was also lackluster. I'll also have to agree with other reviewers and say that the prices are on the higher end with little pay off. Overall a nice spot due to the location and nice menu items but not earth shattering by any means.

Claudia D.

Yelp
I loved their chicken with pesto sandwich. The portions are great, and their soft serve ice cream as well.

Mark N.

Yelp
Great service just came to get a coke. The atmosphere is great and people of all ages look happy. You also get a free icecream with a review.

Manas K.

Yelp
Love the vibes! They're so nice and It's a very cute place to study on north side. Def recooment

Vennila A.

Yelp
some of the worst coffee i have ever drinken. i asked for an iced caramel latte with almond milk which came out to $8.50. they gave me a hot caramel latte and when i asked them to fix it they made an iced one with normal milk and it tastes like plain milk with a hint of caramel. never ordering coffee here again.
