Best Hot Chocolate in Boston | Eater Boston

"With locations in the Financial District, the South End, and Newton Highlands, this chocolate and nut shop also functions as a cafe, and diners flock there for the hot chocolate in particular. Watch for seasonal specials like the pumpkin spice hot chocolate. Retail hot chocolate mix is also available in classic, dark, and spicy." - Eater Staff

Google
Niche chocolate gift shop that also serves excellent chocolate drinks. When I first heard about Cacao, I assumed it was just another boutique chocolate shop specializing in gift boxes. But after stopping by a few months ago to pick up some gifts, I noticed it was different. Relaxing cafe vibes and more diverse offerings. Their main focus is obviously on chocolates, fruit jellies, and small dessert gift boxes, but they also serve sandwiches, pastries, and chocolate specialty drinks. So far, I’ve tried the Fleur de Sel and Dulce de Leche drinks, and both were excellent. Neither was overly sweet, and they were smooth even when served iced. The milky note in the Dulce de Leche was barely noticeable (still enjoyable), while the Fleur de Sel had a distinct salty edge that elevated the flavor. As for their chocolates, they’re not the best I’ve had in the city, but they’re well-made, reasonably priced, and unique enough to make for thoughtful gifts. The sandwich was also solid, though the focaccia was slightly dry. The shop itself isn’t huge, but both times I visited, seating was available. On warmer days, they have outdoor tables, so it’s a nice spot to linger. Definitely worth a visit if you’re looking for a place with relatively niche chocolate gifts or just a relaxing café experience.

Cute lil coffee shop!! Got an extra dark mocha and while delicious, melted chocolate hardened at the bottom and I couldn't drink it at the end. Also would love a simple syrup instead of sugar packets. The chocolate chip cookie was so. delicious. Worth a stop by :)

Had the best chocolate drink I've ever had in my life today and couldn't wait to review. I ordered the iced dulce de leche chocolate and it was gone in about 5 minutes. This is going to be my guiltiest pleasure from here on.

Google
Gorgeous spot for the most delicious hot chocolate in Boston! The dark hot chocolate with oat milk is our guilty pleasure and it does not disappoint. Absolute perfection! The cafe smells heavenly and has adequate seating indoors. Chocolate candy is also available. Parking is not easy in the area but the area is walkable so park where you find a spot and stroll off that delicious chocolate gold!

Google
Small space with true quality chocolate treats! Service was amazing, the workers were so friendly and everyone there was chatting or doing work, making a great ambiance. Dulce de leche latte was surprisingly not too sweet, a nice balance with the coffee, while the hot chocolate was as good as expected! The shortbread chocolate chip cookie was also amazing, with the chocolate being so perfect and flaky sea salt on top, while the chocolate cake was light and delicious! Great little cafe for a sweet treat, would definitely recommend stopping by!

Cacao has been sort of a new discovery to me in the recent month. I had already tried their chocolates as a gift from a friend but did not know how close to me it was. I visited on Christmas Eve and it was beyond what I expected not only the selection of chocolates and pastries, but their staff. The two ladies working, Colombian, were great to talk with, made excellent recommendations for pastries and you can tell when an employee is enjoying their job. It is a great spot for Hot Chocolate and coffee. And of course, a nice date spot.

Google
A little gem offering a delightful selection of baked goods and treats, as well as really good coffee. The Aztec spicy truffle, olive oil chocolate cake, and the dulce de leche latte were all amazing. The staff are friendly and the interior design is beautiful, but seating space is somewhat limited.

Google
Lovely little store. The hot chocolates are the star attraction. The staff is friendly. I did not see in the menu but I saw some people having a flight of different hot chocolates. My spicy hot chocolate was excellent. Rich and deep flavors. I would definitely like to visit again. The only downside is that there is limited seating inside.

Yelp
Wonderful addition to the South End which forces (obviously?) on chocolate of all kinds.... Bars, pastries, cookies and hot, cold and frozen chocolate drinks. Also of course tea and coffee. Cozy space with a laid back vibe and friendly staff. Black and white tile floor and homey touches abound I had a frozen chocolate white was not to sweet and a really good chocolate and raspberry cookie warmed up Pleasant music playing and just lively enough with it being loud.

Yelp
Cacao gave me the best chocolate chip cookie of my life!!! I am so sad we are visitors and can't return frequently. We loved the vibe of this spot and friendliness of the staff. We didn't particularly love our lattes as they were not very sweet or strong and mostly like a light caramel milk.

Yelp
Wonderful chocolate shop with a new outpost in the South End. Finally have a Cacao closer to home so I had the chance to stop by for my first visit. While I was tempted to get a drink, I only ordered the chocolate chip cookie and some chocolate bark. Both were delicious and I can't wait to try more items. The staff is great and the shop is very cozy and great if you just want to enjoy your treats inside. Can't wait to visit again.

Yelp
I stopped by Cacao for the first time to try their chocolate chip cookie, which I've heard good things about. The place is clean and visually appealing, with decor that catches the eye. They offer chocolate options, mainly dark chocolate, pastries, coffee, and small bites. I enjoyed hearing Spanish music and seeing Dominicans working there. I ordered a matcha latte and a chocolate chip cookie. The matcha was perfect, but the cookie wasn't my favorite. I'm not a fan of salt on cookies, and the dark chocolate was a bit too intense for me. However, this is a cute coffee shop with lots of good things to try. Definitely check it out! Plus, it's Dominican-owned.

Yelp
This is a lovely chocolate store. We tried the frozen chocolate and cookie and they were so good! The chocolate is rich without being overly sweet. Everything on display looked so appealing. There is indoor and outdoor seating but not enough table space for you to settle down and study/do work there. There is a steady flow of customers. Cute and clean space inside

Yelp
Their chocolates are so fresh and rich and amazingly delicious! I got a small box for $20 just to try, and yes although it's pricey, they were a real treat! The ambiance inside is great as well and they have lots of outdoor seating spaces.

Yelp
What a wonderful shop! First glance overwhelming with opportunity which is a great place to be. Unhurried you are able to admire the display of baked goodies and magic truffles while reading ingredients, asking questions, and considering options. The team is so friendly and atmosphere business casual kind of chill. Definitely could be a fun remote work spot or nice for a date, though the seating is more open space and economical vs cozy. I still love it! I tested 4 dairy free, gluten free truffles including passion fruit, espresso, ganache, and pure chocolate. The flavors were distinct, textures cohesive and complimentary and each felt like they were topped with love. For my drink I opted for the bittersweet dark and no milk as I love my drinking chocolate straight. It was such a great pick and I can't wait to return. This is something I've been searching for, thank you!

Yelp
Another super cute coffee find in Boston! I'm so glad I stopped by at their South End location. The space is gorgeous and great for coffee photos. They also have some indoor and outdoor seating if you don't want to get your stuff to go. I tried their dulce de leche latte and chocolate chip cookie and both were absolutely delicious. Definitely will be back for their hot chocolate and other treats in the winter!

Yelp
My friend and I went here and had a frozen and an iced hot chocolate (we're hot blooded). They were delicious - not too sweet and not too bitter. We sat outside on the patio but the inside is very dark and cozy - a bit on the modern side. Baristas were lovely.

Yelp
This coffee/chocolate shop is a great addition to the south end! Definitely recommend trying their paletas in the summer!

Yelp
What a wonderful find! This cozy cafe newly opened on the corner of Columbus and Massachusetts Avenues offers hot caocao, coffee, pastries and chocolates as well as a bright quiet space to meet a friend or just take a break. I couldn't resist trying a box of 6 chocolates $20 -divine! With a latte. The staff are warm and friendly. I highly recommend a visit!

Yelp
Awesome decorations and good vibes. Ordered the raspberry and passion fruit chocolates and they were both excellent: not overly sweet, you could really taste the fruit
