Where to Buy Boston’s Best Chocolates, From Bonbons to Truffles - Eater Boston

"For a similar mix of options in Jamaica Plain or Newton Highlands, try Cacao, an ode to founder Leo Baez’s childhood in the Dominican Republic, picking snacks off cashew trees on the walk home from school." - Rachel Leah Blumenthal

I stopped by Cacao after a Pilates class next door and was pleasantly surprised! I didn't realize it was a Dominican coffee shop at first, but once I saw the decor, I had a little moment like, "wait a minute, why does all this feel familiar?!" And I may or may not be biased because I'll always support my people I ordered a buttered croissant and a dulce de leche latte to enjoy there. The space is homey and warm, the kind of place that immediately makes you feel grounded. For a few minutes, it really felt like home, especially seeing touches of my roots reflected in the atmosphere. The staff were super friendly and attentive, and there's a great variety of drinks and pastries. I'll definitely be back. So glad my friend recommended it.

Google
Easily one of the best chocolate chip cookies I’ve ever had, and I’m a tough critic! All their chocolates and sweets are just as good! This spot is also a very cute and cozy atmosphere!

The place is a whole vibe . Super friendly I wanted to stay ! The chocolate is high caliber , pastries and coffee . Thus far , for the quality it’s reasonably priced. The great music is an added plus. The bathroom is super clean as well as the place as a whole . They have indoor seating . They have one seat outside as well . There is limited meter parking but it’s across from a whole lot of metered parking . It’s also in front of the Greenline , Newton center .

Cacao is a small cafe located in Newton Highlands, specializing in chocolate related confectionery and drinks. We came in during the afternoon, and it was quite busy but the staff were very accommodating and knew the menu quite well, recommending some things to try out. They had a large assortment of pre-assembled goods to buy, such as chocolate covered nuts, as well as hot chocolate mix. We tried the hot chocolate and the dulce de leche. The portion size was reasonable for the price, and the chocolate was pretty good. The hot chocolate was made primarily of dark chocolate, which isn't my favorite, but turned out to be a good choice as it cooled down and became more rich. Overall, a great experience and would definitely come back to try again.

Google
Best hot chocolate ever! I lived nearby, but never tried anything from the shop. Recently tried and regretted a lot. This place has single source coffee and chocolate products with small batch production and amazing taste. Go for it one morning, you will have a great experience.

Google
Great place and service! They made a beautiful coffee and hot chocolate for my wife and I. The croissant and chocolate cake were amazing. This is our new favorite coffee shop!

Google
Been wanting to try this but place for a while. welcoming staff and great presentation of the chocolates; however, the taste is really sub par. I got an assortment of 8 and I could not take more than 1 small bite of each and toss it. I might still go try their pastries or drinks to see if any better

Cozy place to have chocolate I think can be improved but still a nice place to visit!

Yelp
A café dedicated to chocolate - yum! I was in the neighborhood, so I stopped by to try out some hot chocolate. I got the fleur de sel hot chocolate with a shot of espresso and my husband ordered a mocha. Both were delicious! The fleur de sel hot chocolate was very rich and very filling. Good for dessert (or for me it replaced breakfast today)! The mocha was bot as heavy but was well balanced and you could tell that the quality of the chocolate in it was superb. There are a few seats inside and the cafe was not busy, so it was a nice place to sit for a while to enjoy our drinks. We picked up some chocolate dipped pretzels and croissants to take home for later. They have chocolate dipped nuts, espresso beans, and fruit too in addition to chocolate bars and bonbons.

Yelp
Cacao is the PERFECT place to press pause and spend a quiet moment with a cup of hot chocolate. The cafe is a beautiful homage to the cacao bean, ranging from its warm ambiance to their delectable bars, coffee, hot and cold beverages. Good customer service, too. We loved the classic and dulce de leche hot chocolates. YUM! Grab a seat to savor every bite and sip. If only Cacao was a little closer to home in NYC to become an integral part of my weekend routine.

Yelp
Today I treated myself to a spicy hot chocolate that is vegan and gluten free. It was delicious. A little spicy for me, but I didn't know I had a choice on how much cayenne to add, next time less Cayenne, and a pinch of cinnamon, I think would make it perfect. Cacao is a cross between a coffeehouse and a chocolatier. Of course, my Eye's went straight for the white chocolate, but not vegan so I had to admire from a distance. This lovely lady gave excellent explanations of the different types of coffee/hot chocolate and iceiced hot chocolate. The Decour of the coffee house was very inviting. An interesting lots of different textures. Nice place to zone out. Poppy Thank you so much for all your help today, I hope this brings you lots of business. *The dollar bow tie was from Me. They also had croissants and a pecan roll. That looks divine but I was good, but I was tempted. Normally I would say a little pricey for hot chocolate however, what isn't expensive now?

Yelp
i think that cacao is a bit over rated. i have to say that their service is excellent. baristas were very friendly and welcoming, and served us immediately. they are known for their chocolate, but i got their iced vanilla latte ($6.69!) the cup was tiny (probably equivalent to a starbucks tall) and it was +50 cents for vanilla and +75 cents for almond milk. i definitely should've tried their chocolate, but it was quite pricey! there's two small tables outside and two small tables inside, as well as a 3-seat bar. there's a bathroom for customers. the vibes of the cafe are great - definitely geared towards adults and people who are on a work break. overall rating: 8/10

Yelp
Absolutely delicious. I tried the drinking chocolate and the mocha. So yummy. The staff was very helpful, too. Can't wait to go again.

Yelp
I can't remember a more perfect cup of mocha! I love the real chocolate used in the latte. It's rich and still packs a caffeine boost. The chocolate mocha was the barista's favorite; I would also vouch that this is a solid choice. The dolche de leche was a bit too sweet for me, but that's expected for that flavor profile. Definitely great to stop by and warm up if you're around in Newton or Jamaica Plain. They sell nuts and chocolates that would make beautiful gifts as well.

Yelp
Excellent hot chocolate. Smooth, think, not overly sweet and very drinkable. Very friendly cashier and cozy interior.

Yelp
Bought a medium box of chocolate and a double mocha. The double mocha is so damn good. I even turned around to tell them the message in person. The flavor is well balanced with richness and spice. It's even better than LA burdick mocha. What a rare found !

Yelp
Really cute local chocolate, coffee, roasted assorted nut shop. Great for gifts or to stock up for your own pleasure. They also have assorted delicious chocolate beverages and coffees for you or your kids. Pretty pricey, but you get what you pay for, quality. I buy their hot chocolate mix and use it to make homemade mochas at home. Recommend trying.

Yelp
The most perfect cup of hot chocolate I've ever had. Will definitely be coming back again soon!

Yelp
What an awesome spot. The dark drinking chocolate is A+! Friendly staff and overall great experience.

Yelp
Coconut paletas are 11/10 delicious and transport you to a Caribbean island. What more could you want?

Al L.

Yelp
This place is horrible! The confections are so incredibly deliclous that I can't stop eating them -- that's the horrible part. I just bought a five-day supply three hours ago and they're almost all gone already. I'm referring specifically to the fruit jeliies, which are as good as the best I've had (Vivace, in Carlsbad, CA). The test is whether you can close your eyes and tell what flavor they are without seeing the color. (I bought a raspberry truffle too--saving that for tomorrow.) So keep in mind when you visit that this place is seriously habit-forming!

Yelp
The store is really chic. I ordered some REALLY yummy drinking chocolate, and bought a gift box of chocolates for a friend. I appreciated that they had allergen labels on the chocolate we ordered.

Yelp
I could get into a lot of trouble at Cacao! So many awesome chocolate items for sale. Seriously, the counter is drool worthy. They also have ice cream bars that looked out of this world and if it hadn't been so cold out I would have tried (next time!). We decided to stick with coffee on this visit. They have a really nice selection. I went with the iced dulce de leche latte (I saw they also had it as a drinking chocolate... again, next next time) which was very smooth and strong and not overpoweringly sweet which sometimes happens with dulce de leche. My coffee partner in crime asked for a cold brew but when they discovered they were out they were super nice and gave him an iced Americano for free. That's really awesome service. He loved his drink and felt it was really strong and like my latte had a nice, smooth flavor. We're going to make it a point to stop by next time we're in the area to try more coffee and perhaps be bad and buy some of the chocolate treats!

Daniel B.

Yelp
I've been by twice so far. They have a small collection of baked goods - the croissant I had was delicious. Their iced hot chocolate (with a little cinnamon) was also great. They have espresso drinks, but I haven't tried. Most of their chocolate is fair trade (at least, that's what they told me) or direct trade (the owners have a chocolate plantation in Central America). They have a wall of single origin chocolate bars, but not all have certification. Anyway, delicious, and I'm sure I'll be returning for more.

Yelp
Cacao now has fabulous pastries every day. their croissants are as good as any U will get in Paris and only 4.00 for a large one.

Yelp
Cacao is a treasure trove. The hot chocolate is the best outside of Angelina's in Paris, and the chocolate Bon bobs and chocolate covered nuts are divine. They boast a great variety of nuts and fruits. My new favorite place.

Jackie N.

Yelp
Went to the cafe over the weekend for spicy hot chocolate and mocha. The drinks are really good and it's a cute shop. Definitely on the pricey side. Only negative was the service was super unfriendly and distracted even though we were the only ones there.

Christina C.

Yelp
We started going to this location when we moved out of the city and it's just as lovely and beautiful. The owners of this shop are wonderful and kind. The products are varied and creative and always decadent. This is the best hot chocolate in the greater Boston area for sure. I hope this shop becomes a local mainstay for years to come - it's my go to gift for all occasions.

Geoff A.

Yelp
This is a world class chocolatier with delicious chocolates and specialties such as marzipan mice which are beautifully made and delicious! They deliver within a certain radius of the shop. A great addition to Newton Highlands!
