Where to Eat and Drink Around Rehoboth and Dewey Beach | Eater DC

"This beachside Mediterranean cafe has been serving standout tapas for dinner for more than a decade. Some dishes, like patatas bravas, stick to the typical tapas canon, while others, like birria tacos, tiptoe away from it. Its Lewes sibling, Olive and Oats by Azafran, opens for breakfast and lunch." - Julekha Dash

This is a hidden gem that serves a wide variety of tapas, mains and more. I loved the boullabaise with large tender shrimp, scallops, muscles and clams. Check photos gor pics of it and yummy tapas. Quite affordable too!

I came with my wife, and we did not make a reservation since we were passing through, the host attended us very well and made us a table. We ordered potatoes bravas and octopus it was delicious, as a starter we ordered a steak paella difficult to find a paella at that level in the area. The sangria was refreshing and with good alcohol level

Google
What a delightful place! There were 5 of us in our dinner party and we chose to order 9 of the tapas plates. All of the offerings were very beautifully prepared and presented, and quite generous portions! Each dish had a unique and layered flavor profile, and we truly savored each one. The green Gazpacho soup was the best gazpacho we have ever had, not to be missed if it is on the menu when you go! We also appreciated the attention to the small details. The olive oil served with the bread was fragrant and had a very good flavor. We were given a nice dish of various olives when we first sat down. All of our cocktails were well crafted and tasty, and the wine selection was great. We sat outside in the lovely covered patio area, it was pretty and peaceful. Our server was excellent, so informative and pleasant! If you are in Rehobeth, you will not find a better spot for a truly enjoyable meal, do not be fooled by the non descript look of the building, everything inside, from the decor to the food to the service is well thought out and topnotch!

The staff was really friendly and the food was amazing! Definitely recommend.

Google
We just barely got in without a reservation on a tues evening in April. Ambiance was cozy and upscale but not pretentious (no white table cloths). A bit noisy and we had to speak with raised voice at least for the first half until another nosy table left. Service was very friendly and efficient although the kitchen was backed up so took 30 min to get food, but the waiter (and also owner?) comped us dessert (delicious chocolate affogato!) for waiting. The duck saltimbocca and veggie paella were both excellent and large enough portions to call dinner. Wine was similarly-priced to most other restaurants ($12-14/glass).

Google
Great dinner! Service 10 stars, food 10 stars, atmosphere 10 stars. The food was served piping hot found out it was a father/son chef run restaurant. Amazing flavors and they were also able to accommodate my friend's specific dietary needs. Would highly recommend.

Google
I had made a reservation for two call back and change it to three got a confirmation. We had a table inside half an hour later I get a call from some woman saying they have to move us outside and the only available seating would be at the bar for three so we said The reservation was for 630. We get there at six I think 40 and there were the three seats at the bar but they told us that we were late and we couldn't stay so we left you're very rude. I wouldn't recommend that restaurant. I've lived here for 30 years. I've been there hundreds of times for them to do that. They don't know that I've been there they don't care They were just being rude.

Google
Food was good, we sat outdoor in the screen room. Was a bit hot and flies landed on our food. Preferred to sit indoor but they said they were booked so they didn't want to pull 2 small tables for 5 peoples. We were there at 5p on a Wed, only 1 table was taken. We stayed bc we were in a rush to be elsewhere later. Don't like their services. However our waitress was nice. We know the area well, on Friday thru Sunday it will be difficult to get dinner without reservations but definitely not on the weekdays. But to be fair their food was good so 3 stars.

Yelp
We enjoyed the tapas selections here. There were four of us. We all loved the potato dish and corn dishes. We were sat in the back yard area which was great because the weather was really nice. Our server was attentive and had a sense of humor which worked for our humorous group. We will recommend this place for anyone looking for something different than burgers and other standard dinner options. Their watermelon salad was also a hit with the table. Drink options were also available.

Yelp
We sat on their cute, backside covered patio on a glorious weather day. Our server was attentive and took care of the few errors that were made during our service. We had a long, leisurely meal consisting of a number of small plate / tapas-style dishes served over several courses (with plenty of wine to wash it down). First course was a basket of crusty bread with olive oil for dipping along with a simple cafe salad we used to get a little something in everyone's tummy. Next up we shared two dishes...a baked goat cheese gratin and their artichoke bruschetta. The frilled pita really helped compliment the dip nicely. Last up was the "meat and potatoes" course consisting of patatas bravas, grilled mushrooms, shrimp a la plancha and beef skewers. The garlic on the shrimp really amped up its flavors and the beef was cooked a perfect medium rare. Not sure how we made it back to our condo after that food coma inducing meal, but it was surely worth every bite!

Yelp
A perfect evening out before a show at the clear theater. Super friendly staff, nice array of tapas sharing dishes, and certainly nice selection of wines and drinks. We try to space out our meal so that we could enjoy each dish as a course along with our wines and we started off the Birra Taco, follow by the mussels and topped off with the sea scallops. Each dish in itself was a work of culinary art from the fresh ingredients to the plating presentation to the incredible delicious flavors.

Yelp
We visited Cafe Azafran on a Saturday evening, after making a same day reservation through OpenTable. Parking was extremely difficult to find, so I recommend planning for that! The interior was dimly lit with colorful walls and art. Our server brought over menus and water right away, and was generally attentive. For drinks, I asked if they had any alcohol-free options, and was told they can make a Margarita Mocktail, which sounded great. Unfortunately, I really didn't like it - all I could taste was cheap Margarita Mix. However, our server was kind enough to remove it from the bill, and I happily stuck with water. For food, we shared the Imported Cheese Board, which was very good. I loved all four cheeses and the dried fruit chutney was tasty too. I decided to get two tapas for myself instead of a large plate - the Spinach Ricotta Gnocchi and Seared Sea Scallops. Both were delicious - small portion sizes, but surprisingly filling. My friends all enjoyed their food as well, including the Shrimp A La Plancha, Vegetarian, and Rigatoni Pasta Ricotta Cream Sauce. The portion sizes of the large plates were VERY generous, especially the Vegetarian. Overall, pretty good for dinner!

Yelp
Paella night was a huge hit. Make your reservation months in advance. Love this place. Great outdoor space, amazing sangria. Watching the chef cook the paella while you salivate and snack on bread is a highlight!!

Yelp
Walking in- The atmosphere is cute and garden-y. Service- The food came out in great time, and the waitress was nice but a bit awkward. Meal- The Pork Ribs were amazing, the flavor was spectacular. The coconut lime rice' flavors were subtle but just the right amount. The spinach gnocchi was also excellent, the parmesan really helped the spinach shine. The duck carnitas were also delicious, the meat had awesome flavor and was a delicious bite. The baked goat cheese gratin was also wonderful. Finally, the antipasti salad was fresh and well dressed, the components were great together. This place has amazing food and is a tiny local restaurant to enjoy yourself in Rehoboth Beach, so stop by today!

Yelp
Steak special on Thursday night and it was fantastic! Oh so good and the service is excellent. They are so polite and professional and never make us feel less than important. We haven't been here in several years for some odd reason but came back today and do not regret it one bit. Listen, I have eaten at hundreds of restaurants all over and this place is one of the best. Delicious food and great service. There is a reason why they are almost always busy. 100% chance of returning again soon. Thank you Cafe Azafran!

Yelp
We've always considered Cafe Azafran a reasonably sophisticated venue in both ambiance and cuisine. Tonight we were not disappointed by the food or service. The ambiance was another matter. We had an early reservation for two; so accommodating us should not have posed a huge hurdle. Had the hostess simply said, "We will be having live music in the bar shortly, would you like to be seated nearby or elsewhere?" Instead, she seated us six feet from where an aging crooner would be singing off- key musical cliches throughout most of our meal. To add to the "fun," a nearby table of four decided to sing along. Our intended quiet dinner became a torturous bad joke.

Yelp
Another really good meal in Rehobeth. We had a nicely balanced salad. Then I had rockfish. Perfectly cooked with a stack of saffron infused couscous, and wilted spinach. My wife had the duck, along with sautéed carrots and lumpy whipped potatoes. Everything cooked to perfection. At the risk of being picky, I asked our waiter for a water refill, and after doing it, he ignored my wife's mostly empty water glass. Not ok.

Yelp
We went here on our first evening and Rehoboth Beach. I have a lamb chops. They were outstanding and my husband had the boulibaise and said it was the best ever.

Yelp
We had dinner here tonight to celebrate our anniversary. Last time we were here was a special NYE dinner in 2021. We each ordered a small plate (tapas) and shared the beet salad. I had the halibut - yummy! And my husband had the seafood bouillibaise. We also each got a dessert - carrot cake and strawberry crumb cheesecake. We didn't eat all of everything, but brought home leftovers. It was all very good! Brendan was our server and he was very good and surprised us with champagne since we're were celebrating!

Yelp
One of the hidden gems of Rehoboth Beach. David is the bartender on Fridays and Tuesday, David makes you feel right at home. He seems to know everyone by name. Holly bartends most of the other nights. Thursday Holly sings with John Flynn. John's at the piano and Holly is behind the bar making drinks while she belts out show tunes, ballads and standard classic. Holly has a clear and charismatic voice the makes the dinning experience at Cafe Asafran a perfect dinner and entertainment night.

Yelp
One of the best meals I've had in a very long time, Tapas Tuesday is not to be missed. We were a group of 5 celebrating a birthday. The tapas special included about 16 Tapas priced at$10 per. We had a round of 10 to begin, clams, shrimp, steak, goat cheese, chorizo, roasted peppers and manchengo, gnocchi. We ordered double on a few, and then ordered 5 more of our favorites plus potatoes with chorizo. Each dish was so unique and flavorful, not to mention the crusty bread was perfect for soaking the delicious sauces. The complimentary dish of olives was great, as was the wine. Overall a wonderful experience in a fun atmosphere with great service. There are several nights featuring specials, we can't wait to try another night at Cafe Azafran. Pw .

Yelp
The ratings brought us here, looking for a late day lunch, we were nicely greeted & seated in rear screened in patio area. Nothing fancy here, decent looking menu items to choose. My wife had the halibut fish tacos, which were good, I had the duck 2-ways, which I didn't eat much of after tasting the duck. It had 1) small breast oven baked & sliced. The rest of duck was cooked & mixed confit fried rice. The duck did not taste or smell fresh, or maybe it was the way it was prepared, it just wasn't an appealing dish I would revisit or recommend. The staff seamed friendly & accommodating, but, the food was only average & slightly disappointing.

Yelp
We were so excited to try this place for Tapas Tuesdays! We got the mussels, gambas Al ajillo, the spinach/ricotta gnocchi, crab cakes and lamb burger. All were very good. I know our server was busy but we felt forgotten-about pretty much the whole time. My hubby tried joking around with him to lighten the mood and he was not having it. He forgot my club soda for about 20 minutes. It felt very-much like we were treated as an afterthought. We ended up skipping dessert and going home. Service can make or break the experience, it baffles me when you go to a spot like that and don't get it.
google avatar

Andrew L.

Yelp
Great Mediterranean & French cuisine. David the bartender was a hoot ... Seared Duck Breast Steak

Mike B.

Yelp
Most of the staff is very rude, one guy in particular, outside screened area is not a very nice area to dine in, especially the view outside the screened in area.

William S.

Yelp
Cafe Azafran is one of our favorite restaurants in Rehoboth Beach. Food and service are always excellent! They have excellent off-season specials. Reserve for paella nights in the summer!

Terry S.

Yelp
Highly recommend! Fabulous dishes from appetizer to dessert. Our server was highly attentive the entire time. Atmosphere has a great vibe - quaint & bursting with happy people all around us sharing the same pleasures. Look forward to Paella!!!

Yelp
Underwhelming food for which you'll pay a premium. This used to be a go-to place for elevated tapas and other dishes, but the recipes have changed, service is sloppy at best, and food was pretty mediocre. A few stand out dishes include the scallops and the bread. Everything else was overpriced, even though the portions are pretty good sized for tapas.

Steve R.

Yelp
My wife and I were pretty disappointed with our first visit to Cafe Azafran. Seeing potato skins with chorizo on the online menu made me want to drive there even faster than I was going. Turns out that the potato skins were replaced on the menu with a potato and chorizo dish. Ok, no problem. Well, it's a large bowl of large quarter-sliced flavorless potatoes with some chopped chorizo at the bottom, covered in two aiolis. It was a side dish, not really a tapa. The grilled romaine salad wasn't grilled at all. The lettuce was BLOWTORCHED. Many of the leaves were torched clean through, with the ashes having clearly flown up and landing back on the lettuce. It was not edible. My wife's fish tacos tasted as though they were frozen from a box. Bottom line: no love in the food preparation at all and pretty pricy for what we got. Service was great though.

Yelp
Always a treat! Delicious food, friendly staff, terrific bartender, and we typically meet interesting people!

Yelp
This is a cool spot to enjoy some tasty food, especially during happy hour. They have a beautiful outdoor space, though it was sort of enclosed which made it less comfortable (don't know if they remove the plastic "walls" later in the season to make it more open air). They brought out some olives for us to enjoy before our appetizers came. We ordered the crab stuffed mushrooms (cheesy goodness), potato bravas - which was quite a generous serving of delicious fried potatoes, and the cafe panini with a side of Cole slaw. Everything was good and our server was very nice - I would definitely return for some of their entrees in the future.
google avatar

Lana S.

Yelp
I went to Cafe Azafran years ago for Rehoboth restaurant week but never posted a Yelp review! I went again this year for restaurant week and the food was as amazing as I remembered. For appetizers I got the chriozo hash which had a egg topped on top. Amazing. The plating was beautiful and all the flavors from the potatoes and chriozo blended perfectly! For entrees I got the salmon with mushroom risotto. Also very good. The salmon was a bit over cooked and I wanted alittle more sauce but still it was really good . My friends got surf and turf which was steak and shrimp. They enjoyed their meals as well. For dessert, I got the white chocolate strawberry mousse which was okay. It was a bit too rich for me. Overall great meal with some good company

Yelp
LAWD was this place fire! We got a late reservation and it was just bumping when we arrived. Our server was very kind and a little quirky which added to the experience. We had amazing cocktails and appetizers. It was steak night, but by the time I went to order dinner, they were sold out. I went with my second option of the scallops and shrimp over pasta, and really, that meal was the only "meh" thing of the night. It lacked flavor and didn't seem worth $32. We finished with strawberry shortcake with a homemade buttermilk biscuit and whipped cream. Overall, it was a killer meal and experience. I'd love to go back the next time I'm in town.

Yelp
This was our first meal in Rehoboth and we didn't know the dinner menu wasn't served for 45 mins after we made our reservation. We walked through a blizzard and wind to get to this place. When we arrived there was only one family seated in the front of the restaurant and a couple at the bar. We were greeted and a guy walked us to a table and I asked if we could have the table next to it in the corner (same sized table as the one he was seating us at). He said that he has someone coming in later and it will mess us his seating arrangements. I asked if they specifically requested that table and he said no.. then in a very snarky voice says, " just go ahead and sit there then". He was clearly annoyed and so were we. My husband and I were about to get up and leave and our waiter came over and introduced himself. He was a sweetheart and If It wasn't for him, we would of left... Can't remember his name but he was from Turkey. Now to the food.. For the appetizer we ordered the spinach gnocchi- it was okay. We also ordered a Caesar salad and a house salad. The grilled Caesar salad was so good with a nice Smokey flavor. We shared a vegetarian platter for dinner. The potatoes were good but the tart was hard. Really wanted to like this place more but the the initial service was really rude. Food was pretty good and fresh. Mixed feelings. Would probably give them another try but the "seating" guy needs to lighten up.

Joan C.

Yelp
We really enjoy this restaurant. The small plates offer the ability to have a variety of foods. Location is quick and easy for us, just a few blocks.
google avatar

Julian P.

Yelp
It is rare to visit a restaurant with high expectations and actually have the experience there exceed your expectations. But this is exactly what Cafe Azafran accomplished on our recent visit there. My wife and I shared the grilled Caesar salad to start. Delicious! Quite possibly the best Caesar salad we've ever had. I followed with the braised short rib tacos. Incredible. Then finished with the hangar steak. Again, delicious. My wife had the beef short rib large plate offering. In her opinion, one of the top two or three beef short rib meals she has ever had. The ambiance and service also top notch. An exceptionally enjoyable experience. We will be back again and again.
google avatar

Brian B.

Yelp
Best mixed drinks I've had in Rehoboth service was excellent but my dish ehh was nothing I'd want to order again rice wasn't right duck was good but not great.

Keith S.

Yelp
We dined here about 2 weeks ago and it was just soooo nice! The cafe is a small place a block away from Rehoboth center on Baltimore Street with some other small restaurants. We started off with complimentary bread and a dish of olives. Great! For our main courses we had shrimp puttanesca and citrus lime shrimp, both with saffron lime rice and roasted veggies. (Monday nights are the shrimp specials). I was really impressed with this nice little dining establishment. Good service too!

Keith S.

Yelp
We ate here a while ago and have been here a few times. This night was very rainy and we were seated all the way in back in a covered patio area that we didn't even know about. Café Azafrán Rehoboth is a very busy place! We had drinks right away and good service also, considering how busy it was. I had a really nice seafood bowl (not sure of the exact name- it might have been a special) and I just have to say azafrán is one of our favorite restaurants.
google avatar

Whitney H.

Yelp
Awesome food and service. Must try for big or small groups. Chicken entree and shrimp tapas are our faves.
google avatar

Tom S.

Yelp
After coming to Rehoboth for 22 years, this is one of the best meals I've had. I will come back...again, and again. Loved the food.
google avatar

Ron R.

Yelp
Reviews are difficult during the pandemic because it's so difficult for even the best places to maintain their normal level of service. Cafe Azafran seems to be doing much better than most! Service was friendly and efficient, with the exception of an appetizer order that never made it to the kitchen. I had the seared scallops and shrimp, which was served over a bed of angel hair pasta with crab meat and crimini mushrooms. Absolutely delicious! My wife ordered two tapas dishes. Her calamari was some of the most tender we've had, and was enough for three people, She also had the beet salad, which she enjoyed very much. It came with a slice of a French goat cheese called Bouchon(sp?) that was one of the creamiest cheeses I've ever tasted. The third person at our table had the salmon and said, "It was good."
google avatar

Charlie A.

Yelp
The food at Cafe Azafran was wonderful. The service was also great. It was very nice listening to the music of John Flynn at the restaurant while we were dining. The atmosphere and food was superb. I highly recommend Cafe Azafran.
google avatar

Susan L.

Yelp
Holy moly was this a tasty meal. Went there with friends, we each got a different cocktail to try, and they were all excellent. Great food. A bit loud, but otherwise a great meal out with friends. Can't wait to go back!
google avatar

Yelp
Oh. My. Goodness. I wish I could give this place 10 stars on food alone. Probably another 6 stars on service. What a great experience this was! I was in town for a bachelorette party with a large group of girls. Cafe Azafran did a great job of accommodating our large group. I wish I remembered our server's name because she was fantastic and gave great recommendations. She even went out of her way to ensure we got a good group picture when we left. Thank you, server!! I enjoyed my margarita and the tapas a lot. A few of us shared gnocchi and the calamari (with artichoke? Brilliant.). It was about 6 of us sharing two orders of each and that worked out well as appetizers. I ordered the fish of the day on the server's recommendation and it was quite possibly the best meal I've ever had while out to eat. I don't know what they put in the cauliflower purée, but I could honestly drink that alone for dinner. I definitely suggest trying this place if you haven't yet. If I'm ever back in the area, it'll be my first stop.

Uh H.

Yelp
Fabulous service and tapas right in downtown Rehoboth! Got the stuffed potatoes, cafe salad, sticky pork ribs and green beans with blue cheese & hazelnuts. Homemade cheese cake was the perfect ending.

MaryAnn P.

Yelp
We come to Cafe Azafran at least once a month, because we love the food, the ambience, and the staff. Tonight was no exception! It was very busy, loud and hot for the staff. But despite all of this, Matthew, Billy, and David, along with the rest of the staff, made it an incredibly enjoyable evening. The food was fantastic. The drinks were perfect and the service impeccable. We will always highly recommend this place to all of our friends and visitors.
google avatar

Brenda J.

Yelp
Came in on a Tuesday evening and sat at the bar. I guess they had a bartender that was out for surgery and a friend was filling in. David was a great bartender!! Drinks were good and service was quick. He was so funny and had the best stories. The poor waitstaff was shorthanded (isn't everyone now) and they were hustling. It was Tapas night and we filled up on those. Spinach ricotta gnocchi were quite possibly the best I've ever had! I can't rave enough about this place. Will make sure to bring friends and family when we come down to the shore again!

Yelp
Delicious lunch. Perfect Bloody Mary. Charming cottage setting. Super nice service. Prez Weekend 2017. Rehoboth is jammed with 73 degree weather. Main drag packed like summer. And one block over on Baltimore is this delightful find. I had their $9 panini. He had the moist and juicy chicken sandwich. He said this is a def 5. And we agree! Veggie chips, gherkin pickles and nice olives completed the sandwich plates. Steps from the boardwalk and the action. A peaceful and lovely find.
google avatar

Yelp
Among some of the excellent restaurants in Rehoboth, Cafe Azafram stands out. Such a cozy and inviting atmosphere with excellent food. I've been here for dinners and breakfasts and I safely can say that I have to get something different every time because it is all so good! Their seafood is always excellent (pictured is a crab and tomato omlette!) And their great for groups. They have specials all the time and totally affordable. Whether you are in Rehoboth in the on or off season, definitely grab a bite here.
google avatar

Jeff L.

Yelp
Sadly we didn't get to try Cafe Azafran. We had a reservation for 3, but there was no one there. All the signs said open at 3, there was even a happy hour from 3-5. We had a reservation for 3 booked on OpenTable. But the door was locked and there was no sign of life. We waited 10 minutes and left.
google avatar

Bernie Z.

Yelp
Bread and watermelon salad to start were excellent. Crab cake entree was delicious and the combination of salad parts was unique and outstanding.
google avatar

Ashley M.

Yelp
Fantastic service and food. The short rib tacos were phenomenal as was the duck entree. David took great care of us. We will definitely be back.
google avatar

Bruce K.

Yelp
Had a delightful and massive meal (my second visit). We went a little nuts and ordered lots of small plates. Incredible amount of great sounding choices and we created a nice mix. But our favorite without a doubt is their Mediterranean Grilled Corn with garlic sauce, dill and feta. Other dishes we enjoyed were the Baked Goat Cheese Gratin, spinach ricotta gnocchi, pan sautéed mussels, and the asparagus with prosciutto The big surprise was we all went nuts for the Ratatouille Provençal. Absolutely delicious!
google avatar

Michael B.

Yelp
Why do you keep advertising your happy hr from 3-5 when you don't open till5? We tried to go here several times and we're treated very poorly ... the bartender is very very rude. Told us bar stools were reserved? I've never hear of that. I will not go back.

Monica Z.

Yelp
Highly recommend for tapas. Entrees are great too but next time will just order a few more tapas. This place really understands great flavors. Recommended dishes: - Scallop with sweet potato purée (amazing) - Duck Birria tacos (shockingly good) - Beef Short Rib sliders (Great flavor but came out a little cold but would have been awesome if was served hotter) - Pecan crusted chicken - Salmon a La Plancha We definitely ordered way too much for two people. Wish the server had been slightly more helpful on how many tapas + entrees to order for two. My suggestion for two: 1-2 tapas + 2 entrees OR 4-5 tapas only

Yelp
Out for a date night with my wife, we were seated next to a family of 9 with a crying baby. That cried our entire dinner. The entire dinner. The restaurant was understaffed and our waitress literally was running between rooms to try to keep up with service. Our drinks took unusually long to receive and my drink was not what I ordered. At one point the family next to us kept putting their baby stroller in the narrow isle used by the waitstaff to get between rooms, despite the waitstaff continuously moving it out of the way. Eventually a food runner ran into the stroller and knocked into our table spilling olive oil all over the table. When we got our bill, we were overcharged for our wine. When I pointed this out to the waitress, she returned with attitude to tell me it rang up correctly, but the menu prices were wrong. Seriously? Just apologize and fix the bill, and don't make it seem like it was my fault for pointing out the restaurant's error. I should have taken the cue from the couple seated behind us and just got the hell out before ordering rather than endure this awful experience.
