One Year After Hurricane Harvey, Houston’s Restaurant Scene Thrives - Eater Houston

"Nearly one year after flood waters from Hurricane Harvey forced it to close, Energy Corridor Mediterranean restaurant Cafe Benedicte is making its triumphant comeback. An update to the restaurant’s Facebook page indicates that it will reopen this week, and it wasn’t an easy road to reopening. Initially, Cafe Benedicte will offer a limited menu and BYOB to allow its staff the “time to master new systems and products” in the restaurant. The menu and the address are staying the same, but Cafe Benedicte is getting a second chance to survive. A few months ago, owner Vahid Navissi didn’t see the Cafe Benedicte making its comeback so quickly. “Neither my landlord nor I carried flood insurance at the time, and as cooperative as he has been to the extent of his ability, it seems that I am still unable to meet what is required of me,” Navissi wrote on Facebook in April. I have not lost faith, I just want to keep you informed.”" - Amy McCarthy

Found this cozy spot on my drive back to Austin. Going by the name, I was hoping to have the eggs Benedict at this place. However, it seems like this dish is available only on weekends. The team went out of their way to make this dish for me on on Tuesday. The whole staff was absolutely amazing and checked up on me couple times. Definitely coming back here again. Cheers, all the good work. Oh, by the way, the eggs, Benedict tasted, amazing

Their appetizer calamari was amazing! A weekend dinner special (after 5pm) prime rib, medium rare, was perfect!! The meat was so juicy & tender on top of smooth yukon mashed potatoes. The au jus and horseradish sauce compliment this dish so wonderfully. This was my first time visiting & it was great for the atmosphere and live piano music. The next time I'm in town, I want to try their brunch menu next.

This is a great venue for group events/outings. The food was good and the atmosphere and service was top tier! The staff was friendly and kind with our group. They have self parking 🅿️ on a free parking lot. Here’s my rating on the meals: *Savory Chicken Crepes: 3/5 *Breakfast Tacos: 3/5 *French Toast: 4/5 *Country Fried Steak: 3.5/5 *All American Breakfast: 4/5

Our 7-mile trek through Terry Hershey Park left us famished, craving a brunch that could conquer any post-hike emptiness. Thankfully, Cafe Benedicte on Memorial Drive swooped in like a brunchtime hero. The aroma of deliciousness hit us as soon as we stepped inside. We dove straight into their menu, and let me tell you, Cafe Benedicte did not disappoint. Their Meat Lovers Skillet was a symphony of flavors, overflowing with perfectly seasoned meats. My friend who ordered the braised lamb shank couldn't stop raving about its melt-in-your-mouth tenderness after craving for it in the past 3 weeks! And the grilled lamb chops? Very thankful a friend let us try his chops order. Let's just say not a single morsel remained on the plate. But the true stars of the show were the staff. Attentive, friendly, and always helpful, they made us feel like brunch royalty. By the time we left, our appetites were sated, our spirits high, and we were already planning our next visit. Cafe Benedicte gets a ten out of ten from our happy (and full) hiking crew. I highly recommend it to anyone searching for a phenomenal brunch experience.

I simply cannot say enough great things about Cafe Benedict!! We have been here several times and it never ever disappoints. The food is always amazing, the staff is always kind and professional! Special thank you to Mr. Vahid and his manager who were very very patient with our planning for mom's surprise 65th birthday party. They were able to change the room we were in to accommodate more people just a few days before. When I came to set up balloons I was thrilled with the beautiful setup they had prepared for our guests. The small details were very much appreciated. Just a truly great local place for lunch or dinner. Easily will become your new favorite. We love them!

Came here for lunch and was not disappointed by the food. The paella was fragrant, flavorful, and there were threads of saffron in the dish. The ingredients were fresh. The mussels, shrimps, calamari, chorizo, and chicken were perfectly cooked. The whole dish was delicious. The lamb shank was big, and super tender. The mash potato and green bean sides were good too. Baklava for dessert was the perfect ending. The phyllo pastry was crispy, thin, and flaky. The ground walnuts added extra texture, and the honey brought the dessert together. Scrumptious! The baklava was served with a small scoop of ice cream on the side. I have never eaten a baklava with ice cream so it was new to me. However, I found the ice cream to be unnecessary as the baklava was already a sweet dessert. I couldn’t taste the sweetness from the ice cream after eating just one small spoon of baklava. I received great service today and thoroughly enjoyed the food. The restaurant has an olden but modern look, and there are plenty of seats for small and big groups. There is plenty of parking too. I will be back for sure.

Came here for a brunch after a meetup at nearby dog park. We were able to sit outside patio, enjoy fresh air and served by friendly staff. They were so nice to bring water for my fur baby. Great food, nice atmosphere, highly recommended.

Yelp
The best happy hour in the area. I love their lamb chops. The lemon drops are amazing!

Thuc V.

Yelp
I had lunch here with a dear friend of mine. She drove the both of us. Because the parking lot was tiny, we chose to do valet offered by the restaurant. HUGE MISTAKE! As we were sitting out in the patio, we saw our car get slammed into the concrete right in front of our eyes. The restaurant manager didn't want anything to do with it. The valet guy didn't speak English. It was a nightmare. And the food was forgettable too. Needless to say, we've never gone back to this hell hole.

Yelp
The Houston Restaurant Week menu that Cafe Benedicte absolutely drew me in, but when I arrived, I didn't order from that menu (of course!). Today was unfortunate because the AC was not working properly. It was a bit warm, but I had driven 20 minutes and didn't want to turn back. The staff was incredibly accommodating due to this issue. I started off with the brie and while I though the brie with fig jam was awesome (perfect balance of savory and sweet), it came with 4 crisps... for an entire glob of brie. Definitely would have preferred a few more. All in all though, good cheese. I couldn't decide between the lamb shank and the pork chop. I decided to order the pork chop because this is the entree I saw on the HRW menu and what initially drew me in. I thought the presentation was awesome, but the waiter asked me to cut into the pork chop to check that it was cooked all the way, which I thought was interesting (I've never had to do that with a pork chop before). The pork chop was tasty, but I didn't think the sauce added anything in terms of balance to the grill. It's not a bad sauce at all, it just didn't complement the pork all that well. I thought the mashed potatoes were amazing and tasty. The green beans were also well-cooked. Would I come back to Cafe Benedicte? Absolutely.

Yelp
Great atmosphere with the pianist, welcoming service, enjoyed my omelette with the side of French toast!

Damla D.

Yelp
We went for a family brunch. Great service. The owner was lovely. He made the rounds to be sure everything was to our satisfaction. Adorable setting (despite being in a shopping strip).

Anna H.

Yelp
We enjoyed the service and food here. The chicken Marsala, Kabobs and Steak Diane were really good. The side dishes were all excellent as well. Will certainly return in the future.

Yelp
In a word Magnifico. The ambience, the wine, the food, the entire experience was worthy of more than 5 stars! The Lamb Shank was perfectly seasoned and melt in mouth tender Yukon Mashed Potatoes and Fresh Seasoned Green Beans were the delightfully tasty companions to this hearty gourmet meal. The Pasta Primavera with Seasonal Vegetables in and Shallot Butter with Basil Pesto, Crème, and Farfalle was replete with wonderful flavors and nirvana to the palate. We'll be back often...with friends!

Stephany K.

Yelp
If you didn't order Cafe Benedicte's Thanksgiving to go meal, you really missed out! It was wonderful and the turkey was delicious and moist. We enjoyed everything and all we had to do was heat it up. I'm leaving Thanksgiving to these experts from now on! It beat other restaurants we've tried in the past. Their in person dining is also great - food, service, and ambiance. We recommend highly!

Emile H.

Yelp
When the food smell so good you dive in before you can take a photo . That lamb shank was cooked to perfection! Definitely coming back. The music was a nice touch. Service great!

Cassie H.

Yelp
Wonderful date night with live piano player. We enjoyed hummus appetizer, the blackened redfish pontchartrain and pork chop ending it all with yummy carrot cake for dessert. We ate our food too fast to take pictures of it all. Highly recommend this neighborhood gem!

Rachel H.

Yelp
Delicious food! I ordered the lobster bisque and the lamb burger... both were delish! The service was quick and the waitress was lovely.

Theresa R.

Yelp
Amazing ambiance, food and service! Came for brunch and had the eggs Benedict. The food tasted fresh and came quickly. Would come back again.

Juliet S.

Yelp
Great lamb shanks and lovely wine. They have a diverse menu and everything is delicious!

Terry T.

Yelp
Food was great, service was exceptional and it is a great place for dinner and to converse with your fellow diners in a quiet environment.

Duncan D.

Yelp
Wife and I had our 2nd anniversary here. We tried 2 appetizer as to meals. Sea bass was amazing and the Lamb shank stood alone and was amazing. Wine specials as the Bartender Eirc was great and service was on top. Piano playing in the back sets the atmosphere.

Heidi B.

Yelp
Once again, incredible service, amazing food, wonderful ambience - truly a special place! Chicken Tangine and the Portobello Appetizer were so delicious, so perfectly prepared that you must try them!!

Sophia N.

Yelp
Café Benedicte is another Houston's hidden gem. I love coming here for lunch, the food is phenomenal! I have come here several times since I work near here. The first time here, it was my department Christmas luncheon. I had Steak Diane - Filet Mignon Medallions in a Bordeaux Demi-Glace w/ baby portabella mushrooms & onions. Delicious! Since then, I came back here for other luncheons and had many entrées. Another favorite is the Pork Chop Au Poivre - Brandy and Green Peppercorn cream sauce. Service is always excellent. They have a small private room for guests if you have a conference meeting. I would like to come back to try their brunch menu!

Hannah L.

Yelp
We met with friends here on a Friday night. It was nothing like we expected! All I knew from a quick online search was that this is a popular brunch spot. We thought the atmosphere would be laid back, but it was quite upscale in the evening! There was live music - a pianist! And candlelit tables. We felt a bit underdressed! The clientele seemed older (not that there is anything wrong with that!) It is a Mediterranean restaurant - I also would not have guessed that from what I skimmed before arriving. We were seated quickly, and the staff was courteous and friendly. They brought baskets of bread to our table. They have a wine menu and well stocked bar. We loved the food! Everything tasted amazing. We were pleasantly surprised by how much we enjoyed our dinner. It felt calming and cozy and was the perfect place to catch up with friends after a long work week. 4 stars because we did have to send back the lamb shank for being undercooked. The staff handled it with grace, and it came back perfectly cooked. The soup arrived warm instead of hot. I didn't ask for it to be heated up, though I'm sure they would have been happy to do it. This is a lovely place for a date! I'm sure we will be back.

Scott B.

Yelp
Enjoyed my Father's Day brunch here. Classy vibe, nice live music (pianist), and good service. Arrived at opening (10:00am) and our party of 4 was seated immediately without a wait. Server unobtrusive but present & polite. My eggs bendict was savory and tasty, and the skillet potatoes sidedish were crisp and perfectly cooked- but lacked flavor. On par price-wise with most bkft sitdown places in the area. Not a lot on the menu to draw me back, but left content.

Nannette Z.

Yelp
Amazing food & service, Sunday brunch is my favorite but dinner is awesome as well. Highly recommended

Zed M.

Yelp
my husband and I have been going on & off for 15 years and the food is amazing the quality gets better & better every time. the service is great, recently went for my birthday my favorite server Lucas & the owner very sweet lady surprised me & enjoyed great meal. I highly recommend you check them out

Yelp
Tucked away off of Memorial, Cafe Benedicte bares the air of familiarity. It's raucous, but welcoming. Unassuming with a twinge of pretension. All of this would beg an eyebrow raise if their food wasn't exceptional, but every bite of their Savory Chicken Crepe validated my life choices. Savory, it was. Their peach mimosa was a generous champagne pour, but I was never asked if anyone could refill it. Aggrieved by the oversight, I returned to my crepe for comfort, which it bountifully provided. The service wasn't great, but the food, divine.

Becky C.

Yelp
We went for Brunch and it was very good. We ordered chicken crepe with hollandaise, with fruit and a spinach omelet with fruit. Both entrees were very flavorful and full of vegetables. Service was exceptional. We have eaten here for many years and we have never been disappointed. Restaurant is clean and well maintained .

A D.

Yelp
A Very good & classy restaurant. Everything I tried was excellent. The gumbo was superb.

Jennifer C.

Yelp
The service at Cafe Benedict was excellent. The atmosphere was nice, and the food was adequate. I would like to give extra recognition to the bartender who even came out to our the table to make sure our special "off the menu" drink requests were to our liking. Parking is difficult so just be aware.

Melissa F.

Yelp
Wow! Can't wait to go back. I had the wasabi encrusted tuna and although I live nowhere close to this restaurant (there for a business meeting for a client nearby) I will make a special drive to get this salmon again. I ordered it medium minus and it was perfectly cooked. This was a great place for a biz meeting because the service is perfect and the setting is super as well. Thank you!

Peter S.

Yelp
Second time trying cafe Benedicte and I'm really disappointed . When for bunch Egg Benedict 2-10 the Bagel under was so hard and stale and the Sauce was so under seasoned . No taste at all. Side bacon -0-10 it was soooo hard .

Tamie J.

Yelp
What a little gem to find! We stumbled onto the place and we've all decided it will be a staple! A great, quiet, chill atmosphere with live piano music. We were amazed at the quality of food for the price. Steak Diane was superb - the filet medallions butter tender. Where can you get 6 lamb chops for $49 - and they were cooked and seasoned perfectly (said my brother in law who's an expert!). I had redfish ponchartrain and the crab and shrim sauce was spicy and creamy. Pictured is the crepe brûlée dessert - which we loved. It was a nice experience. We will definitely go back and make it a standard! Nice wine selection, too!

Andrew J.

Yelp
The customer service and wait staff were phenomenal!!! Super friendly folks here. The place was clean, organized, and has a more romantic, sit-down type setting. The food is made to order so it takes a bit to come out. We got the ceviche as an appetizer. The citrus flavor overpowers the dish a bit but it was still pretty good. My wife got the lobster risotto. This unfortunately was a hard pass. My wife complained of a strong smell and she didn't finish the dish and had it sent back. I had the gyros with fries. It was good but nothing to write home about, unfortunately. The tzatziki sauce also had an overpowering flavor of what seemed to be cucumber. All in all, the service/wait staff is really good. We would go back but it would probably be just to have drinks at the bar.

Natalie S.

Yelp
Just stopped by to get some breakfast and it was AMAZING!! We're from out of town but anytime we are this way, we will be stopping by! The service from everyone was great. They're all so welcoming and make you feel like you're the queen. All the food was tasty and cheap!! I highly recommend trying it out.

Dennis D.

Yelp
Ambience is a 3. Plenty of room. Ceviche was good. Service meh. Server did not put in a side dish we wanted. Entrees were not good. Served old, rubbery chicken. Friend sent it back and chef came out and interrogated us rather than apologize and make good. Up late right now with some sickness. Eat at your own risk

Joy C.

Yelp
The service and food is wonderful. The owner and the staff are truly great people and it makes the entire experience very enjoyable. Also, it's not loud here so it's easy to converse with those you are dining with.

Lili S.

Yelp
On a Thursday afternoon, my family and I called to reserve a large table for 17. Cafe Benedicte was able to accommodate us and had very pleasant waiters. The cuisine is Mediterranean, so it has rich flavors with a healthier twist. Don't let that fool you; the dishes are hearty. For an appetizer, we shared the light hummus and naan. It was the perfect plate to pass around and keep conversation flowing. For my main meal, I order the pasta primavera and it arrived in a gigantic dish. The sauce was creamy and paired perfectly with the bow tie pasta. Since I was extra hungry, I also asked for the mac and smoked Gouda cheese. It was not the pasta overload I was expecting and can now say Cafe Benedicte has the best Mac and Cheese I have ever tasted. Lastly, their chocolate cakes (flourless and another that comes with vanilla ice cream) are the perfect size for your stuffed belly. This is a classy dinner joint with live music in the evening and I want to try everything on their menu. Next time. :)

E E.

Yelp
This is a great hidden secret! The menu is extensive, the food great, the service wonderful and it has a quiet atmosphere. We will be going again!

Yelp
Christine & Pasquale Leonetti This review is overdue , we love Cafe Benedict & go there when we are in town. This was a special occasion , a ThankYou , to good friends , atty's with their wives as a ThankYou in handling legal work . The date of our small party was 10/21/2023. I called Havid to set up arrangements ... we were in a private room and the ambiance & Food service was simply over the top. The Resturant was packed , we each had a different selection from the menu from Appetizers, to steak to salmon. All perfectly presented & temperature Perfect !! Wine selection was amazing , however , the Bar Makes a mean " lemon drop martini " that was had by 4 women in attendance. .. BTW , my choice of Vodka was Grey Goose ... We received so many " Kudos" on our Cafe Benedict , that you will see many back during the holidays. . PS : their Brunch is to "die for" . The selections are superb. The music was a surprise to our guests, that added that special touch. Thank You, Havid & Your Wonderful Staff ... We all enjoyed it Immensely. Christine & Pat

Claudia F.

Yelp
Perfect spot to catch up with a friend, the waitstaff' was very friendly. The food arrived fast and it was delicious. The price and portions are also great. It's a quiet spot, they do have piano nights during the week. My friend celebrated her birthday in their private room, it was about 15 of us. The price was extremely reasonable for such a large party. The orders were all correct and came out in a timely manner.

Michel Y.

Yelp
The lamp shank was delicious and the old fashioned was a statement! Staff super friendly and caring.

JanMarco F.

Yelp
Food was really good and service was not bad either, only complaint is they were slightly condescending at times due to my age. However I don't really care because the atmosphere and food were just that good. For reasonable prices this place serves fancy food and could make a date night feel like your dining in a $100 a dish Michelin star restaurants

Alan S.

Yelp
My wife and I recently celebrated the New Year at Cafe Benedicte. The service and atmosphere are top notch. The filet I had was among the best I've ever had, even a high-end steak restaurants. There is a warm feeling of family each time we go there for all our anniversaries and birthdays.

James S.

Yelp
One of my favorite local restaurants. The interior is bright and informal and it has a nice (although small) outdoor patio dining area. Service is always attentive without being too intrusive. The food selection has a great mediteranian emphasis with a few Cajun, Persian and Indian influences thrown in. I particularly enjoy the Paella, Chicken Piri Piri, Couscous and Pork Chop Au Poivre. We recently met at Cafe Benedicte with a group of friends and everyone was able to find something interesting. The wine selection is good and reasonably priced.

Alan S.

Yelp
I was here for a reception, so not quite the regular dining experience. The cafe is cute, the food was solid, and the service was excellent. The place feels very welcoming with nice decorations. I enjoyed the crab cake. The empanadas were pretty good. The kebabs are okay, the meat a little tough. The desserts were awesome, little bite size petit four style cakes. The service was really over the top. Extremely courteous, kept my drink full, and kept everything clean.

Lulu D.

Yelp
Lobster bisque and baked Brie were amazing! The paella was good but a little saucy for my taste. Service was exceptional and the live piano music was a nice surprise.

Leena C.

Yelp
Private party. Went in for my best friend's ("cousin") birthday. It was in the private room. It was a set menu with options. Beef empanadas Lobster bisque Salmon croquettes The food was ok. The beef empanadas were small but delicious. The lobster bisque was a bit thick for me but full of lobster. The salmon croquettes were my least favorite. I misread the menu and thought it was salmon steak but the croquette had a slightly sour aftertaste. Just not for me. 2 out of 3 isn't bad. They also had steak churrasco (which was apparently delicious), chicken picatta and a vegetarian option. The staff was great (esp the ladies). The guys were nice too. My only issue is one male waiter kept coming in with his mask below his chin. (Sorry, not sorry but too many variants for me and I'm trying to keep alive to keep my 84 yr old dad alive) The ambiance of the restaurant was nice. Very clean and cozy. There was a bar in the main area and a live band (Saturday night).

Christiane S.

Yelp
Awesome food. Great service. Lobster Bisque was the best I tasted in a restaurant. The waiter was very attentive and friendly. I will come back again.

Rachel S.

Yelp
I visited Cafe Benedicte a few months ago with a friend, as we were trying to find a good brunch place equidistant from our locations in Houston. We settled on Benedicte after perusing their menu and finding it quite suited to our liking. Upon arriving, neither of us was too hungry so we opted to share an order of Moussaka. Our waiter advised us that it wouldn't be too much food, though we didn't think it would be a problem. Given the price of the entree and this restaurant's reviews, we were both somewhat underwhelmed by what we received. It was decently prepared with an elegant presentation, but we still expected more. Our waiter was very attentive to our needs throughout the meal, however, and inquired whether we wanted to order more food. We decided not to, instead opting for another meal later in the day that was closer to our price range. The friendliness of the staff here was well-received, and perhaps more items from their menu would be worth trying. I probably won't be back, but if you're in the area, this might be worth checking out.

Carmen D.

Yelp
Love the European atmosphere and good choices. It's romantic. Wonderful service. Wine list has great choices for any price rsnge

Heather A.

Yelp
Absolutely amazing!! The flavor of the salad mixed with the avocado toast and eggs is a perfect combination. So much taste!!
