On the Grid : Cafe Bolívar

"The brainchild of Venezuelan and Japanese owners, this hyper local spot in the Sunset Park neighborhood is equal parts coffeehouse, arepa bar and art gallery. It’s hard to know which part is better because they serve it all up with quality and style. From fresh salads and sandwiches to Oaxacan hot chocolate and locally roasted coffee, Bolívar defines the term “Glocal.”" - TRÜF

The 32 Best Coffee Shops For Getting Work Done In Los Angeles

"Café Bolivar is a great spot to get work done for a few reasons: it's always soothingly quiet here, there are plenty of outlets by the shop's large windows, the WiFi is speedy, and, most importantly, they make great arepas. Come to this South American café in Ocean Park for strong Colombian coffee, a delicious lunch of corn cakes stuffed with anything from pulled pork to fresh cheese, and plenty of space to zone out and make that looming deadline. The Best Arepas In Los Angeles

"Santa Monica’s Café Bolivar specializes in subtly sweet, dense, and stuffed arepas that come with meat, cheese, and creamy avocado fillings. This place makes theirs fresh to order, with our favorite being the pulled pork - golden masa filled with tender pork shoulder that’s slow-cooked for nine hours in a tomato-based sauce, seasoned with Caribbean spices, and topped off with cilantro and pickled red onions. Arepas come in orders of two, so feel free to mix and match and enjoy them with your coffee. The Bolivar is great and consists of a double shot of espresso mixed with condensed milk for a decadent twist on our morning routine." - sylvio martins

Cafe Bolivar Review - Santa Monica - Los Angeles - The Infatuation

"This South American-style cafe on Ocean Park is a perfect place to get work done. If that’s your goal, get here early to grab a prime seat by the window (and near one of their plentiful outlets). Bolivar has great coffee, a decent selection of pastries (definitely get some arepas), and fast wifi, and while it gets busy, it never gets too loud to focus. When you’re in Santa Monica and want to avoid the crowds on Abbott Kinney, head to Bolivar. Food Rundown Pulled Pork Arepa We’ve eaten plenty of pulled pork across this city, but few versions can compare to what you get in these tasty arepas. The pork shoulder is super tender with a sweet and tangy Caribbean spice blend that pairs well with the semi-sweet masa and pickled shallots. Add some green salsa too if you’re looking for a little extra kick. Ripe Mango Arepa At first, we thought the fresh cheese and avocado filling would make this too rich and creamy, but the thick mango slices provide some necessary acidity. The garlic confit and rosemary aioli also add some good sharpness. Make sure to try one of these. The Bolívar The rich double shot of espresso melds together with condensed milk to create a viscous and decadent cafecito that will simultaneously satisfy your morning sweet tooth and clear your morning brain fog. Mocha Oaxaqueño If you want something a little less sweet, get one of these. The cacao flavor in this coffee drink is earthy and smokey, and pairs perfectly with the espresso." - Team Infatuation

Google
Great spot for delicious arepas and coffee. This was a tasty meal, and for vegetarians, the mushroom ‘chorizo’ and black bean options are tasty. I loved my matcha oak milk latte as well, and the service and atmosphere of the cafe really invites you to sit and stay, unlike so many grab n go LA shops that feel cold. The comfy couch chairs and tables, the nice service, and the tasty food contributed to a new favorite shop on Ocean Park.

Google
Stopped by for the first time with my wife. She has been here already and suggested it. Lovely place with friendly staff. I’ve ordered arepas which comes with a choice of two. It was absolutely delicious. Will definitely come back for coffee next time. I also liked that they display artworks.

Have you ever wished for a nice cold coffee drink on a hot day or a warm arepas? Well you’ve come to the right cafe. Cafe Bolívar (est 2001) is a cute corner South American coffee shop on Ocean Avenue in Santa Monica. They have good selection of coffee & tea drinks, selective pastries, salads, breakfast, and special arepas. This cafe has a calming atmosphere with background music that’s not too loud, and the staff are skilled. I came on a sunny warm afternoon to grab a cold drink/light lunch. I had a Cold Brew and Chicken Arepas. I enjoyed their refreshing cold brew coffee drink but so much on the pollo arepas. Its chicken was dry; arepas outside was crispy and crunchy but the inside was not moist. Moreover, their size was bloody small. Cafe’s interior was naturally bright and aesthetically decorated. Indoor/outdoor seats were comfortable. Prices of the drinks were fair, however, arepas seem expensive. Service was on point. Staff were cordial. Free wifi. Plenty of street parking. Overall, it’s a nice coffee shop.

Google
I was really looking forward to trying Arepa Coffee Shop for the first time. When I walked in, the initial interaction with the cashier was great—he was friendly, and I told him I was excited to try the food. He mentioned it would be about a 15-minute wait for my arepa, which was totally fine. Unfortunately, that’s where things started to go downhill. After waiting around 20 minutes, I noticed things were getting a bit chaotic, so I politely checked in with a staff member. She couldn’t find my order or my receipt, and it became clear that something had gone wrong. They eventually figured out there was a mistake, but I ended up waiting another 15 minutes after that—so in total, it took about 40 minutes to get my food. The arepa itself was tasty, but definitely not worth the long wait and confusion. What really disappointed me the most was that no one apologized or acknowledged the mix-up. It left a bad impression, and sadly, I probably won’t be returning

Google
Carlos and his staff were so kind and welcoming. Some of the best food I’ve had in my years in LA. Best arepas - very filling and flavorful. The fruit, granola and yogurt tastes so fresh and magical. Everything feels done with care. Highly recommend.

Google
My absolute favorite place to work on the west side! Two outlets, indoor, outdoor and counter seating, great sun light, and quiet enough to get things done. The mango arepa changed my life and makes every bad day better

Google
1st timer. Business trip. Was going to walk across the street to a different coffee shop and this caught my attention. So glad I went in and there is 20 minute parking in front. Pay by card or coins at the meter. Homemade juices ready to go. Pour over. Mocha. Homemade scones and croissants. Cute little vibe and spot to drink and eat or do work.

Teresa Nguyen

Google
Like other reviews, nice staff but VERY slow service. It took 25 minutes to warm a pastry up when it was not busy. Staff looks frazzled and confused while preparing food.

Yelp
Tip: Park on at the park on 17th St X Ocean Park Blvd if possible. - - - - - - bolivar cofee + arepa bar was a nice little coffee spot. Upon walking in, the general stand with a petite menu is present for a quick flip through. As usual, i went with an iced latte to taste their beans, and I would not recommend this as an evening drink. Their beans were bold and flavorful; you will be kept awake! Speaking of petite, they do have a restroom, and the door was measured to perfection, sliding out but never hidden an adjacent door that leads outside in the back. There are plenty of seating options with power outlets and fast Wi-Fi. My only complaint was that parking was annoying (as expected in LA) Nearby street parking wasn't the easiest despite it being a weekday night. The nearby park (on 17th St X Ocean Park Blvd) does have parking options, but have a gander at the parking signs - classic LA experience, right?!

Yelp
A nice little cafe in the Sunset Park neighborhood of Santa Monica. Friendly service. Tasty coffee drinks, and fresh juices. Try the arepas.

Yelp
Update: Came in at 5:30pm and was refused once again for the third time in several months. Trying to give this place another chance but I was refused once again because the kitchen was closed smh.

Yelp
Cute Venezuelan cafe with drinks, sandwiches, and arepas. Came here with a friend on a weekday for lunch and ordered some arepas to split. Each order comes with two arepas. We tried the chicken, the stewed beef, stewed pork, and mushroom. All of them were tasty and came freshly made (it takes about 20 minutes for the cook time). I also had a matcha latte with honey which was very tasty and nicely sweetened. The service was friendly and efficient. You order/pay first before taking a seat. Dine-in and takeout are available. Credit cards accepted. Metered street parking. Indoor and outdoor seating available.

Yelp
The arepas are to die for!!!!! Great sandwiches and coffee, a little over my budget when it comes to a quick bite, but the staff is nice and the environment is good for sitting, eating, and working.

Yelp
Love their arepas. All of the flavors are delicious, and the service is great as well. It has a nice casual ambience.

Yelp
Both my daughters have been going to Café Bolívar for about 5 years now and they love it. My oldest have been raving about their arepas for a while now and early this year I finally went with her to try it. I've been back quite a few times since. We love it! I think we've tried every single arepa and they're all delicious. My favorites are the ones I had today: "Fresh Mozzarella" and "Pulled Pork". My daughter was craving their "Slices of Ripe Mango". They have a good selection of fresh juices, sodas, boxed water, etc. They also have a cute selection of baked goods and really good coffee. I love their latte. There's seating inside and some patio seating outside. The people that work there are also so nice and friendly. I highly recommend this place.
google avatar

Ritu M.

Yelp
Omg! What an authentic delight! I highly recommend the chicken Arepas! And I was in love with the Oaxacan Mocha. This place has a very neighborhood feel to it and I felt I was transported to another country. Their ethnic charm paired with their kind and welcoming service makes you feel at home. It's a great casual spot for a reasonable price to enjoy lunch and a beverage (coffee/juice). And if you get a good table, not bad to lounge and work/study from. If I lived nearby, it would by my local hang.

Yelp
Was just driving down Ocean Park and saw this place with a sign "AREPAS". I love arepas so had to try it out. The reception by the hostess (and barista) was so nice and she recommended the pork arepas and also the chicken. They have many kinds and lots of vegetarian options.. You get two kinds with an order. Their fresh juices are superb; try the guava! One sip of the guava juice and I felt like I was back in Hawaii: so fresh. They have nice shady seating on the sidewalk and you can hang out with your laptop as it's also a coffee bar. Inside there is bar seating, cute tables, one long table and one really comfy table for two in the window with padded chairs. That's the one to get.
google avatar

Wil P.

Yelp
The arepas were delicioso, great coffee and juice selection and good music too!!! I'll be back.

Jason S.

Yelp
Best coffee in Santa Monica. Staff is always friendly and helpful. Relaxing place to enjoy coffee and a good book.

Yelp
FOOD/DRINK: They make such a great cortado coffee, would definitely get it again. Also had two vegetarian arepas - black bean and cheese, and mushroom chorizo. The latter was my favorite, but both were delicious! These came out on the quicker side (maybe 5 minutes?), though I know can take up to 20 to make from the other reviews. Tasted flavorful and fresh, and were a great portion size for breakfast or a mid-day snack. They have a decent-sized breakfast and lunch menu (along with some pastries), plenty of vegetarian options, and fruit juices that looked really refreshing. AMBIENCE: I really enjoyed the ambiance here. I went on a weekday, so it wasn't super crowded. There's a few 2-4 seater tables, a larger window-facing table with comfy chairs, a ledge for those who want to park with a laptop, and some outdoor sidewalk seating. More of a casual vibe, very bright and airy and open. On a corner. There is street parking (up to 1 hour directly in front, and up to 2 hours a few blocks down on Ocean). That's my one qualm, is that it'd be hard to spend more than 2 hours here due to the parking situation. SERVICE: So friendly and kind.
google avatar

Griffin C.

Yelp
Yeah this was really amazing. Ive never had arepas before so i didnt know what to expect but one bite and i was mad blown. Hella blown. Thanks to the gal pal for putting me on
google avatar

Vi D.

Yelp
Cute coffee shop. I like to do some work here, but there is little space so once the tables are taken, you'll have to find another place to do some work. The coffee is really good. Minus 1 star for the food. Could have more food options and the flavors are nothing special. After trying some menu items, I've resolved to only ordering coffee from this place.
google avatar

Diane M.

Yelp
This coffee shop is one of those spots that almost feels like you're in a different city. The owners are nice and friendly and service was good. I tried the matcha latte and almond croissant. The croissant looked better than it tasted, but the matcha was good. Didn't try the arepas, but maybe another time. Cute spot if you'd like to hang out for a couple hours and catch up with a friend. Note that it can get a little loud inside since they're constantly running the smoothie machine..
google avatar

Connie C.

Yelp
The chorizo/mozerella arepas were super tasty and I have been thinking of them ever since. My kiddo liked them too. We also tried the Mexican torta which was not that tasty. The chicken on it didn't taste great. I also had their chai which was really yummy and we enjoyed that very much. There are places to sit inside the cafe-either a big table, along the window counter or tables for two. It was a very busy Saturday morning but we didn't have to wait in line too long. We did wait awhile for the food so kits know their arepas take a little while to make but they are fresh and delicious-worth the wait. You can tell they have their locals that come here often so that means people like coming here. The place inside is bright and modern looking. I would I definitely come back again if I was in the area. The family running the place is hard working and bringing high quality food and drinks to the neighborhood.
google avatar

Alex R.

Yelp
My daughter and I always go here! When you walk in you smell pure deliciousness! Our favorite arepa is the chicken avocado. I like that they have Inca cola. You can't find it anywhere else. But I normally order an iced latte. We also adore the owner, José. Everyone is nice and we always feel welcome!
google avatar

Lily W.

Yelp
It's been a minute... haven't been here since BC (before covid). Hot chocolate was $3.75 I was charged $5, so $10 for 2 hot chocolate. Whooooaaaat? I didn't make a fuss since I already ordered and was in a rush. Still waited a good 10mins while the girl took her slow time to make the order and chatted on the phone and walked away etc. Yelp menu lists $2.40 Online website lists $4 Either prices week up 25% overnight or I got ripped off. Too bad I tipped 20% before I realized all the above. Ugh.
google avatar

Daniel G.

Yelp
Lovely spot for arepas, coffee, and tropical juices. It's a nice bit of nostalgia for anyone who's been to Colombia.
google avatar

Amber B.

Yelp
I like this place! Their sandwiches are yummy & enjoy the coffee. A solid place to get good food nearby the workplace.
google avatar

Paul R.

Yelp
Friendly staff makes the coffee so much sweeter. Great pastries and 10x the service from neighboring coffee shop
google avatar

Hana R.

Yelp
This place has such a chill vibe with great music. Really great spot to get some work done or just read. Their coffee is delicious and the beans used for their espresso are locally roasted. My cappuccino had the perfect milk consistency and the latte art was the cherry on top. 10/10

Sensei C.

Yelp
This place is magically delicious. Had a mango arepa and a pulled pork. AMAZINGLY good. Great juices too and cute ambiance.
google avatar

MyMy _.

Yelp
On the website it said the two ham arepas were $9 but in total it was $14.33? Not saying the food isn't good but the tax is wild. Service was chill.
google avatar

Rebecca J.

Yelp
I love love love their fresh juices . The arepas are pretty good too . Wait times are slow and the staff could be more friendly but it's still a solid spot . There is a huge park nearby called clover park if you prefer to grab it to go and relax at the park :)
google avatar

Elizabeth A.

Yelp
I love an afternoon at Bolivar. The food is all made in-house so it's fresh and delicious. The coffee is piping hot and not too fancy, more of an accompaniment than the main show. But the real sell is the ambiance, which is warm and welcoming. On a sunny day the place is always full, that's the benefit of southern exposure. Great local for meeting up with friends or getting work done.
google avatar

Holly H.

Yelp
These arepas are unreal!! The bread is soft on the inside and it's perfectly crispy on the outside. And no cutting of the roof of your mouth either. Honestly I could drink the cilantro sauce that comes with the arepas! I got the flank steak and the mango avo and cheese one. You can mix and match! The flank steak is a shredded steak and the flavor was incredible!! It's juicy so do get extra napkins before you dig in. The mango avo cheese combo wasn't for me (in a personal taste way) but I'm still really glad I tried it! Both the mango and avocado were perfectly ripe and with the cheese, it's a sweet and savory combo. I thought my iced chai tea latte was just okay and kinda wish I ordered the iced cafe bolivar instead! My friend also highly recommends their juices. Give them a try!! Easy street parking on a saturday.
google avatar

Julian P.

Yelp
This is the perfect spot to study, have coffee, and try Colombian food. I came in with a friend to study around 10 am and was pleasantly surprised to find spacious seating and welcoming service. The wifi worked perfectly and we studied here about 6 hours given they close at 7 pm. The cafe has a cute bookshelf with Colombian books that you can browse. Ample free street parking on Ocean park and 23rd. Food and drink rundown: The Bolivar coffee is their special, creamy, thick, and sweetened with condensed milk. My friend got the Cafe tacuba which is sweetened with Mexican caramel, however, the Bolivar was our favorite. This was my first time trying arepas and I am so glad I chose this place. You can mix and match flavors, each order is about $12 and comes with two + sauce. The sauce was a bit underwhelming and could use some acidity or spice. The meat was perfectly seasoned and they were served hot which I loved, however, it did take some time to get north the coffee and food. Pros: Unique coffee blends, nice ambiance, good food. Room for improvement: service time, larger menus, bathroom a bit rundown and could use some work.
google avatar

Jetrina M.

Yelp
I had arepas for the first time at smorgasburg and was happy to find a local place near me! I ordered in the phone and picked up 15-20 minutes later. It's 2 for $12 for any flavor combination and I ordered a steak one and a chicken one. The arepas seemed to be on the smaller side but they were well filled! 2 arepas made me feel satisfied. The flavors were excellent - definitely recommend the two that I ordered. My partner ordered one that reminded us of ham and cheese, maybe would not get that one again. Street parking was easy to find in the neighborhood next to the cafe!

Lauren Y.

Yelp
These arepas are so incredible and made to order. The person taking my order was very friendly and helpful in describing his favorites on the menu as it was my first time. The environment is so cozy and it was a great place to get some work done!
google avatar

Andrea M.

Yelp
Great place to get some work done. They have really fast WiFi and plenty of outlets. The music is also 10/10. The staff is super friendly. Their fresh pressed juices are really good, highly recommend the apple, carrot, ginger. Only gave it 4 stars because I ordered a matcha, wasn't my favorite
google avatar

Taylor K.

Yelp
YUM! the mango and chicken arepas were delicious! The staff was very friendly and helpful. Good music and happy people
google avatar

Anita Z.

Yelp
Great food. Love the arepas. The coffee is good. The servers are friendly, helpful and sweet.

Ariella N.

Yelp
I'm almost scared to even review about how great this place is because of it turning into a non local spot, because that is what it is. I have studied here and ordered amazing arepas and food. Love the staff here as well. It's a small place but great food!

Eliana Q.

Yelp
The chicken & steak arepas were amazing. Highly recommend. Overall, coffee shop was cute too
google avatar

Ashley H.

Yelp
wow cannot wait to come back again to fix my arepa craving. we ordered the beef and moz (with bacon), guava juice and side of plantain chips. delicious afternoon snack!!
google avatar

Darrell S.

Yelp
This place is great. The little arepas are awesome and the latte was perfect. Polite staff and order came out quick.
google avatar

Teli P.

Yelp
Dropped by this afternoon with my sister for a couple of their delicious arepas. I got the pulled pork, pork in a cornbread roll, my sister had the chicken and avocado, avocado piled high on chicken stuffed in that cornbread. She wouldn't let me have any, but I'll testify that the pulled pork (with a special green sauce on the side) was very very good. Nice sized sandwiches for just $6 apiece and I had a cup of their fabulous coffee to set me up for a walk on the Palisades. There's a nice atnmosphere too with great staff, tables inside and out. One of the best deals on Ocean Park!
google avatar

Chris M.

Yelp
God, I ordered a black bean arepa, confirmed it was the vegetarian one and said I wanted the vegetarian black bean just to make sure and they gave me pulled pork which for the record isn't the same thing in the slightest. Took them 15 minutes to make the wrong thing. I just threw it away. I would have been more satisfied by eating the leaves from the bushes on the side of the building What on earth guys....

J. B.

Yelp
Amazing little spot! The sandwiches are absolutely bodacious and the service is friendly and excellent. This is not fast food. Be patient and ...ENJOY!
google avatar

Jet R.

Yelp
Nice place to study, relax and enjoy their menu. Chefs and baristas are nice. Really good music too.
google avatar

Amira A.

Yelp
It was my first time here and i had such a wonderful time! The ambiance was so home-y and warm. The coffee and arepa were amaaaaaazing, I'm still thinking about the mango arepa. The people there were so sweet. It was a great place to get some work done. I can't wait to go back!
google avatar

Onil J.

Yelp
Shared 3 arepas with my son and we loved them. Carlotas y queso, jamón con queso, and pulled pork. . Can't wait to go back. Gracias!
google avatar

Alex V.

Yelp
This little cafe on Ocean Park in a diamond in the sea of cafes in LA. The logistics of the sitting area is perfect. Great seating and you don't feel squished with other tables. Tables are actually big enough to study as well. The coffee is excellent and their arepas are delicious as well as the salads. I would have never tried the mango arepa, but ordered it at the barista's suggestion and now I can't go without ordering it. Great theme with cozy books on the history of Bolivar in the corner. Love.

Yelp
Looking for authentic foods from South America, delicious pastries and chill vibes and an Original coffee house in the Ocean Park neighborhood, then this should be your first choice. Fresh squeezed juices with fruits with original Mash up mixes, incredible pastries and the best Arepes around, come here to work (wi-if), meet you with your Tender date, hang with a friend or grab and go. The owner Jose has made it his goal To give back to the community, support local schools and artists and welcome Everyone. This is the kind of place all neighborhoods deserve!
google avatar

Steve S.

Yelp
My weekly spot. I always get the lox bagel and either cortado or cold brew. Super friendly staff, great coffee.

Joan M.

Yelp
Arepas taste homemade! The coffee is delicious. Great place to get work done. What else do you need?
google avatar

Virginia D.

Yelp
Ok espresso drinks. Tasty juices. Arepas are made to order, so it takes some time BUT that also means you can make substitutions- in my case, removing the cheese to make them vegan. Yummy!

Kirenjeet B.

Yelp
Cute place. Arepas we're yummy and the coffee as well. No seats available busy coworking vibes. Will definitely go back some time and try to find a spot. Arepas take a while to make but worth it.
