20 Best Things to Do in Oaxaca

"Cafe Brujula is a personal favorite — visit the one on C. Macedonio Alcala, and order banana bread to go with it." - Travel + Leisure Editors

"Get Your Caffeine Hit You might detect the aroma of fresh coffee on your stroll along the Macedonio Alcalá tourist corridor, and if you're hankering for a caffeine hit, just follow your nose. Cafe Brújula has three locations, but the more central of the three is on Oaxaca 's main pedestrian street. Order your coffee and snacks at the counter, then make your way to the back of the building and find a spot in the typical Oaxacan arched patio. Besides great coffee (roasted in small batches at their location on Garcia Vigil), they also offer tasty salads and sandwiches. There's free Wi-fi, so if you need to get some work done, this is a good spot for it."

The 32 Best Restaurants in Oaxaca, Mexico - Eater

"This Oaxacan coffee mini-chain started in 2006, with the goal of working exclusively and directly with small, local coffee producers around the region of Pluma Hidalgo near the coastal town of Puerto Escondido. So far, the founders have not only kept their promise, but their business has thrived while doing so, expanding to five locations throughout Oaxaca City. Aside from excellent coffee, Brújula carries what might be the city’s best sugar cookies. Or skip the coffee altogether and try the Pepe Limón, a fresh lime juice smoothie, or anything else from the large roster of drinks and pastries. [$]" - Omar Alonso

Google
A beautiful place for a coffee in the centre of Oaxaca. Although it’s located very centrally, the courtyard is an oasis from the busyness of the nearby streets. There is a bookshop next door, also well worth a visit.

Google
one of the best cafe in town, go early to get to the pastries first. Let's get this bread

Google
A nice little coffee shop with a cozy courtyard tucked away from the street—perfect for relaxing with a cup in hand. The atmosphere is calm and welcoming, making it a great spot to read, work, or catch up with a friend. The coffee is top-notch—rich, smooth, and clearly made with care. I recommend stopping by if you appreciate quality brews in a peaceful setting. Definitely worth a visit!

Google
Only got smoothies which I’d definitely skip. I think $85 and honestly weren’t good at all. I’m sure the coffee is nice though. The courtyard was nice to sit in and we played chess there!

Google
Lovely outdoor indoor courtyard. NICE and relaxing. Carrot cake was delicious and so tasty.mango drink was very refreshing. But I came for hot chocolate and they had none left. A let down. But still enjoyable

Google
The courtyard/entry area is so beautiful but the ☕️ I had was subpar. Tasted a bit too watered down but the 🍪 was good.

Google
Wonderful! I enjoy coffees, smoothies, and pastries from this spot. The courtyard is a nice place to read or socialize or just hide out from the rain. Very convenient location and kind staff.

I had the mango smoothie and it was perfect :) very refreshing and affordable! I paid 85 pesos. They have wifi and it’s a great place to hangout. Note: they only accept cash.

Yelp
Great cafe to relax in Oaxaca. Tried the cafe mocha and the cold brew. You can sit in the courtyard area. It's such a beautiful spot and away from the noise of the city. There is wifi (password is on the receipt). The cafe mocha (cold) was made with some delicious chocolate. I think it would be amazing hot. Would recommend

Yelp
Cute cafe close to el zocalo. Prices are a little higher than comparable locations: around $70-80 for drinks instead of $50-60 that I've found elsewhere. I ordered a cold brew which came in a cute bottle and had it in their courtyard. The courtyard is surrounded by a bookstore in case you want to buy something to read with your coffee. Their pastries looked excellent but I didn't try anything as I had just eaten breakfast. There is password protected wifi otherwise service is slightly limited in the courtyard at least on Telcel.

Yelp
Solid place for coffee centrally located with plenty of seating. I had a latte with oatmilk which was just as I expected simple good tasting coffee. I also had the ham and cheese croissant which was nice and flaky. Service was good, and you can get by with simple Spanish or English just keep it simple. Overall good experience to start the day.

Yelp
We stopped by this location (in Centro Cultural San Pablo) of Café Brújula for a coffee and a pastry one morning when we had an early pickup for a tour. The location is so gorgeous that we had to enjoy our coffee and pastries there. The coffees (americanos) were very good, and our pastries (corn muffin for me, cinnamon roll-ish pastry for the husband). The service was great as well. Just a really nice place for a coffee break or quick breakfast.

Yelp
Great little spot right in the center of a lot of action in Oaxaca. Order inside and then go out to their beautiful little courtyard to take a break and recaffeinate! Delicious cold brew and cafe de olla. I love that it came with a tiny chocolate on the side, too. So glad we stopped in!

Yelp
Cute little spot in a busy area of town. Drinks: Flat White - 4/5 Desserts: Cheesecake with fruit - 5/5 Sugar Cookie - 4/5 Service is fantastic. Super friendly, and helpful staff. The cheesecake is phenomenal! You definitely need to order it. Sooo rich, and sooo creamy. The fruit topping was delicious. Sugar cookies are tasty but a tad on the dry/hard side. Coffee is good, they have a lot of options. Very touristy, lots of gringos hanging around...unfortunately.

Yelp
Not all coffee shops are alike and this small shop with a courtyard patio is a true gem. This was my destination in the morning to get my caffeine high before touring the city and surrounding areas. They'll offer you baked goods which are made fresh and without a lot of sugar.

Yelp
Solid coffee option! They make good coffees, its right near the church, you can get some shade from the sun! They gave a few food options they don't advertise well.. granola bowl and sandwiches. They have a corn , pumpkin and banana muffin.

Yelp
Excellent Coffee. We came in here for some afternoon caffeine. The workers were all friendly and happy. I ordered an americano which came out hot and it was the best coffee I've had so far in the city. There is free WiFi which we used and enjoyed the quiet calm setting.

Yelp
Loved the tea I had here! Great taste and the service was awesome! Lo recomiendo mucho.

Yelp
Consistently fantastic coffee drinks and the most peaceful courtyard in the bustling center of Oaxaca. It's like entering a new dimension of beauty and calm. We loved having our cold brew and cortado sitting here and soaking up all the good vibes. Absolutely recommended.

Yelp
Was trekking around and dogs were barking so wanted a place to chill with a caffeine pick me up. This nice little joint was the perfect spot for that. It sits right across from the church so great people watching. The cafe is also connected to an indoor plaza that had a kiosk with the best foreign exchange rate seen that day. Order up: -caramel frappe with rich, creamy whip -double cappuccino Staff was nice and place was clean. Banos avail in-house as well. Would stop in again or try other locations if another caffeine fix is needed

Yelp
We stopped by on day two of our 11-day trip and had a great experience. We visited another location on four other days--also great. When we returned to this location on day nine, our experience was completely different. The young woman who took our order would be better suited for a different position. When I asked if I could buy additional oat milk to try to correct my drink. She and another female employee were impolite when I asked to buy additional oat milk to try to remedy my drink. A male employee ended up helping me out and I still left a tip, but we won't return to this location. I recommend the Cafe Brujula at Alcala 407.

Yelp
After visiting the Templo Santo Domingo complex and the shops and vendors that line the streets around central Oaxaca we searched for a place to relax and recharge. There are lots of places in Oaxaca to enjoy an espresso or a hot chocolate, but we think we found one of the best. The hot chocolate is divine, and the variety of designs the barista creates are works of art; makes you not want to ruin his art by sipping, but sipping we did and we were in heaven.

Yelp
We had delightful espressos and machiatos. Cool, relaxing courtyard and a pleasant staff.

Yelp
It was a good turkey sandwich. My matcha was ok but my fiancé's mocha was spectacular. The lemon cookie was very good.

Yelp
Fast & friendly service. Only had the iced latte and it's great. So creamy and delicious. Wanting another one already. Perfect location by the church.

Yelp
Fantastic oaxacan organic coffee and fresh bakeries. I've gone 3 times in 3 days so that tells it all

Yelp
This trendy coffee bar is a great place to have a small meeting or a social gathering with friends. The coffee is organic coffee from several places in the state of Oaxaca and has a great taste. The fresh smoothies and crushed ice drinks are really refreshing. I do recommend to ask for less sugar, as they love putting loads of sugar in everything in Mexico. They also have delicious cakes; chocolate, carrot and lemon cheese cake and cookies. This Brujula coffee shop, there are four in total, only has inside seating areas. There are quite a lot of tables and chairs but mainly higher tables with stools. The service is excellent and the employees are really friendly and helpful. Wi-Fi is perfect for people who want to work/Skype or write a review in Yelp!;) One negative point is that they do not have their own toilet so you have to ask for a voucher and then you can go to the public toilet on the first floor of the mini shopping centre. You also get a stamp card and with 10 stamps (one per visit) you get a free drink!;) The stamps can be of any Brujula coffee shop.

Yelp
Lovely place with a nice ambience. Next to Santa Domingo church, with a view of street vendors and locals and tourists coming and going, lounging around on the steps and such. The drinks are good. I had the mango drink and the hot chocolate, which were fine, but I think I can find better hot chocolate elsewhere. Service is friendly and efficient. Not great with English, but not bad either; their gesturing is very informative. Wifi is reliable and medium speed-ish. Not for watching HD videos, but great for general web surfing, handling all your admin/touristy things, email, etc. Bathrooms: You have to get a ticket from the cashier, walk out the back entrance to the shopping center, go up the stairs, and give your ticket to the attendant. It's free this way, 10 pesos without the ticket. Like most restrooms with an attendant and fee, they're spacious, clean, and well-maintained.

Yelp
I would say this place is well located with excellent customer service. I would say the soy chai latte is lacking the punch I'm used to when drinking chai. Normally when I drink chai it has a strong spice flavor to it, where here I feel it's missing the spices that truly makes for a good chai.
google avatar

Melyssa F.

Yelp
They have two of these in Oaxaca but this main one had a cute little outside area. They had lots of coffee options and some nice sandwiches as well. We ordered a turkey sandwich which was fresh and delicious! The coffee was by far my favorite because it wasn't overly sweet and I love iced coffee ... pictured is a vanilla latte and Oaxaca chocolate but iced. The staff was friendly as well and everything came out quick and delicious. They have WiFi which is a plus ... I would surely recommend this coffee place deff gives you foreign hippie vibes!

Yelp
This is a local coffee shop that hasn't gone franchise and they'll the best like this. I can tell the staff love working here and you get more service from them. And I love the decor of the coffee shop, its very original. There is no brewed coffee, so if your "American" ordering straight up coffee you'll going to get a latte. They'll brewed coffee is "Americano", it's a shot of espresso and hot water. Also your going to have to ask for milk on the side. The place is laid back and relaxing. The drinks and pastries are also cheap. And you can get hot and cold sandwiches and cakes. Coffee shop 10/10. Coffee 9/10.

Mark R.

Yelp
The cafe sources its coffee from a Oaxacan Cooperativo that sells organic, shade-grown beans. I enjoyed the drinks I got from them and their commitment to paying farmers fair prices. Also, the courtyard at this location is gorgeous and it's a great place to get out of the sun for a little while.

Yelp
The sweetest people, and great coffee! It's a wonderful place to just hangout and read a book or do work, as they have free wifi! I came here almost every morning the 2 months I was in Oaxaca.
google avatar

Sergio V.

Yelp
If you want great tasting, 100% Oaxacan coffee, this is the place to be! They have a wide variety of teas, but my favorite was their iced latte!

Ana C.

Yelp
What a cute chain of cafes in Oaxaca. I went to the shop closest to the Zocalo and it had a lovely outside court to sit and enjoy your beverage. Good WiFi as well. I really enjoyed the packaging on the bags I took home-great graphics. I is not drink coffee but the chai was nice.
google avatar

Renee E.

Yelp
Good coffee, slightly slow service. We took our coffee para llevar, so can't comment on the sit-down experience. I adore their little drawings and took a few home to post on my fridge, so every time i open my fridge, I'm greeted with Cafe Brujula. Will definitely return on my next trip to Oaxaca!

Catherine H.

Yelp
Best cappuccino I've had since arriving in Mexico a week and a half ago. Often other places sweeten or water down the coffee. However, this place has good taste and strength.
google avatar

Thulasi O.

Yelp
Wish there was even one cafe like this in San Diego, CA. Consistently fantastic espresso and macchiato, with consistently friendly, warm service, as is usually the case in Mexico, but even for Mexico above average on that account. Free drinking water purifacado, and lovely relaxing interiors and courtyards...
