Cafe Califas Opens in Barrio Logan With Pizza and Paella | Eater San Diego

"Housed in a renovated 4,500-square-foot house on Logan Avenue, Cafe Califas is a 90-seat, casual, community-oriented hangout in Barrio Logan that owner-chef Mario Maruca largely restored himself; with most seating al fresco on a wide front patio and a spacious back deck and a mostly outdoors kitchen, the space showcases an enviable collection of equipment — a wood-fired pizza oven, smoker, Santa Maria grill and fire pit for huge pans of paella. Maruca, who previously ran the Italian food truck Caliano by Spinelli, will serve a Moroccan-style vegan/vegetarian paella with optional proteins, a variety of Neapolitan pizzas and nostalgic pizza fritta (fried pizza dough dusted with sugar), plus grilled skirt steak with onions and chiles, braised and roasted pork belly, "cowboy beans" (stewed pinto beans served with steak and grilled toast) and seasonal specials. His family's importing business from Nocera Inferiore will supply premium olive oil and other Italian products to use on the menu and sell at the restaurant, and a deli case inside will stock salads, roasted vegetables and grab-and-go pizza. A satellite bar on the patio will pour beer and wine and specialize in Baja-inspired sangria made with fresh juices, and Maruca plans to host pizza and paella parties, guest-chef collaborations and rent the outdoor space for private events; Cafe Califas will open starting at noon Tuesday through Sunday at 2219 Logan Avenue." - Candice Woo

Cafe Califas Opening in Barrio Logan With Outdoor Wood Fired Kitchen | Eater San Diego

"Chef/partner Mario Maruca is aiming to put “California culture on a plate, from San Louis Obispo to Cabo” with Cafe Califas, a new Logan Avenue restaurant opening in the heart of Barrio Logan by late April/early May. The concept will feature a seasonally changing small-plates menu priced to encourage ordering multiple dishes, with a small indoor kitchen but most dining and cooking taking place outdoors on the 4,500-square-foot property; the front patio will serve as the main seating area and Maruca is building a backyard kitchen suite with a wood-fired oven, smoker, and grills inspired by Deckman’s En El Mogor and his own home set-up. Drawing on his experience with wood fire, the menu will include both traditional and unconventional pizzas, roasted and smoked whole proteins, and grilled local vegetables—part of his mission to offer “a lot of good food, cooked simply, over wood fire”—and he plans to make the space community-oriented by hosting guest chefs for monthly wood-fired paella collaborations." - Candice Woo

Yelp
The owners of Cafe Califas have refurbished a house in the Barrio Logan neighborhood into a newly opened eatery. The place is located on one of the main strips in the community, Logan Ave, near Salud. This is the only local street in which I have seen vehicles parallel park in the median of the road without any concern from law enforcement. It is certainly an unorthodox solution to help with the parking situation as the legal curbside spaces fill up quickly. There was an outdoor kitchen setup behind the house including a wood-fired pizza oven, smoker, Santa Maria grill, and fire pit. All of the seating was al fresco either at tables in the front patio or at picnic tables in the backyard and deck. You walk up the steps and through the front door to place your order at the service counter in the main room. Some prepared foods and drinks were available as grab and go items. Pizzas and paella will be the main focus of their menu. For the soft opening, four pizzas, a vegan paella, and skirt steak tacos were the choices. I chose the last item for my meal. Arracherra skirt steak, grilled onions, and chiles were accompanied by flour tortillas and guacasalsa. The components were placed on a rectangular cutting board as a serving vessel. The steak was cooked medium rare and then sliced into pieces that could fit inside a tortilla. The two grilled chiles had a nice smoky flavor to them. The avocado based salsa added a creaminess to the meat and vegetables. For the food quality and relaxed outdoor setting, I gave a four star rating for my initial experience at Cafe Califas.

Yelp
Their outdoor dining is especially inviting with a fire & beautiful hewn wood tables (from a local craftsman). We didn't know what the menu would be until we went inside, but we weren't disappointed when we learned it was wood fired pizza, a personal favorite. Our sausage/mushroom pizza was delicious! It also came without a long wait. A lovely setting on a warm spring evening. Suggestions: post your menu & get a hearty red wine.

Yelp
Best wood fire pizza in San Diego! Cafe Califas opened this week, and we're so glad they did. Bo and Mario are wonderful hosts, and they did a great job turning this beautiful house into a restaurant. Best part is their uber-talented master pizza chef who makes a flavorful NY crust that puffed like pastry. Loved it so much that we took a second one to go!

Yelp
Great pizza. Great service. Will definitely come back! I tried the ricotta/leek pizza. Can't wait for the vegan paella to come back on the menu
