Chicago Restaurant and Bar Openings to Know, July 2025 | Eater Chicago

"There’s a new coffee shop in Pilsen from one of the owners behind Mexican restaurant Peke’s Pozole. Café Carranza serves items like horchata latte, iced espresso, and other caffeinated beverages made from Café Aroma de Mexico beans, plus tortas and pastries." - Jeffy Mai

Their house specials are spot on! Horchata latte is not too sweet and very good, would recommend. Their brown sugar shaken espresso is my go to. But snuck a sip of my father-in-law’s latte, which was the Horchata latte and highly recommend next time I’m getting that. We tried their muffins and a concha. Concha was good (nice and warm) but muffins were phenomenal. Next time I stop in I’m definitely getting a bagel. I’ve gone during the week when it’s a little slower and on a Sunday morning, where it was busy you was where we were at a nightclub. Sure there was a wait, but I think their lattes are so good. It justifies the wait. Picture below we tried all of their house specials. I would say top two are Horchata latte and brown sugar, shaken espresso. Will be going back and I live nowhere close.

Home made bagels paired with some nice wall murals and good coffee. Not a ton of seating but that's just enough for a few groups of two to four. Staff were friendly and service was quick. Worth stopping in!

The employees were super welcoming, and Camil recommended her favorite drink. I tried the Horchata Latte and it was delicious! Such a cute little spot to relax and enjoy some coffee. Will definitely come back again soon

Had 3 different iced lattes with almond milk (usually do oatmilk but they ran out) and they were amazing! Staff were super nice! Can’t go wrong with anything in their menu. But must go early cause they sell out early throughout the day.

The jalapeño cheddar bagel was pretty good. The bagel itself was soft. I had the horchata and chocolate abuelita coffee. I would say it's a tad too sweet for me. If I could make it a little less sweet, it's a 10/10 for me. Everyone seemed friendly and happy. It seemed pretty hot in there when I came in today though. Overall, I would definitely come back. Definitely worth the money.

Its my first time coming here so I got The chicken breast sandwich. It was a letdown it was just one slice of chicken breast ham, tomato, a couple pieces of bell pepper and a slice of cheese. I'm verry disappointed, can't taste the ham nor the cheese. 0/10 for the sandwich. The brown sugar shaken espresso felt a little wattery but it was fine could still taste the espresso and the brown sugar 4/10.

Google
Great coffee shop!! I actually enjoyed my coffee ( it was a little too sweet for my liking) but the flavors were there. Their sandwich was great. Would love to come back and try other menu items!

Yelp
Super friendly staff and the space is cute but I thought my drink was still too sweet despite asking for it half sweet. Prices are super reasonable though so I think I'll come back and try something else (also they were slammed Saturday morning so maybe that had some impact). They also have food too that looked yummy but I only got coffee.

Yelp
I was hoping there would be more specialty drinks than there were. You cannot make the horchata latte dairy-free, as the base has dairy in it. The aftertaste of the horchata latte was very grainy. I got the iced chocolate abuelita latte, which was yummy - it was a mocha on the sweeter side. I was also expecting the sandwiches to be more breakfast-oriented, but they were just smaller tortas with lots of veggies. My ham sandwich/torta came with a side of pasta salad, which was very tasty. My friend mentioned that the avocado toast was very lime-heavy, which made it not so enjoyable. There are about five tables in the shop. It's a nice place to hang out or work from.

Yelp
In my 3 years of living in Chicago, I've not reviewed a cafe even once. I've drank some incredible coffee in my time and Cafe Carranza must be in the top 5. The quality of the coffee is only the beginning! The syrups and flavors they have pair amazingly well and are expertly measured into the drinks. I had their abuela chocolate latte iced and it was delicious. I've also had their house coffee and must say I've never been more impressed by regular drip coffee. I'm not sure of their origins or really where they get their beans but it is of the upmost quality. Their customer service is nothing short of amazing as well. The employees are nice and knowledgeable in their craft. They work at a fast pace without sacrificing quality. If you are anywhere in the area you have to give them a try!

Yelp
Ordered the iced brown sugar shaken espresso and the avocado sour dough toast. Both were awesome and to die for! The espresso had that Mexican coffee taste that reminds you of home and the avocado toast had me wanting to order more! Great service, Awesome food. Nice ambiance. Will definitely return. 5/5

Yelp
Cute small cafe in Pilsen! They played pretty good music and the staff were really friendly. Ordered the iced abuelita latte and it's really good (not overpoweringly chocolate and not too milky), I highly recommend!

Yelp
I really wanted to love this spot after seeing so many TikTok videos and because it's Latino-owned. Unfortunately, the drinks didn't live up to the hype. The Hotchata latte was too grainy and overly sweet, the Chocolate Abuelita latte with cold foam was extremely sweet, and the Café de Olla with minimal sugar tasted mostly like cinnamon. We also weren't asked if we wanted a milk alternative or informed that any were available. I wish I could have ordered the Horchata latte with a non-dairy option, or at least without whole milk.
