Pastry Chef Shawn McKenzie Is Minnesota’s Only 2023 James Beard Finalist - Eater Twin Cities

"McKenzie’s graceful desserts have made their mark on menus across the Cities, from her unrivaled baba au rhum at Burch to Rustica’s delicately sweet roasted banana tart. But Café Cerés has always been McKenzie’s canvas for exploring Turkish flavors. Her chocolate zephyr cookies, made with rye flour, are among the Twin Cities' finest; her pistachio croissants strike a perfect balance of airiness and nuttiness; and her pillowy Turkish bagels — a.k.a. simit — are lovely with a cool smear of labneh and za’atar." - Justine Jones

Love the vibes of the cafe, we were visiting Minneapolis and this was one of the cafes that kept being brought up. Coffee was okay, nothing special. The staff however weren’t the friendliest. The place is definitely aesthetic so if you just come for the vibes and to take cute pictures, definitely stop by. Otherwise, don’t bother!

Very cool atmosphere with good seating and lots of natural light. Coffee we got was pretty good and to food was okay. Breakfast bagel was kinda cold on the inside and very dry. The banana bread was very good. Definitely a good breakfast and coffee spot to check out if you are in the city.

Small space but lovely staff and aesthetics. Stopped in Sunday morning per a recommendation from a friend and I’m happy I got to experience it for myself. The Turkish bagel flavor profile was new but it worked! Brown sugar molasses latte was delicious! It’s a nice space to study it’s cozy & quiet. It is located downtown so parking is difficult, also because of the building desk the bathroom is located by key on the 4th floor. Other than that I really enjoyed my experience here and I will definitely be back to try the Turkish bagel with salmon!

The interior space is bit small but I guess they are known for the patio space. I bought the cinnamon bun which hard in texture, not that great. The light roast coffee was good tho.

Love this find. Ambiance is full of light, warm and inviting. The Prosciutto and Basil Croissant with the Dukkah Latte was amazing this morning. The food was per recommendation of the staff after asking if I wanted substance/savory or sweet--I preferred the former. The croissant has a crisp spicy sweetness and savory Prosciutto with veggies. A well balanced sandwich with the mild sweetness, but not too sweet latte. Staff was super helpful and pleasant. I'm not downtown often, but I would definitely return.

This is my favorite Minneapolis coffee shop. I go to them all, but Ceres has a good variety and never disappoints. I particularly love this location for the atmosphere and ease of access. Try their bakery items and the Pistachio Latte!

I stopped by this place on my morning walk. Very subtle and kind of hidden but small and cute once you’re inside. They have a few seats and tables inside and a few seating areas outside. The service was great and I enjoyed the recommendations of a bacon something and a latte which I throughly enjoyed. A little pricey but based on the location it’s to be expected.

We stopped by to pickup a latte and two pistachio croissants. We had to get one chocolate because they only had one pistachio one left at 8:30 am. Chocolate one was ok, and didn’t have much chocolate in it. But the pistachio one was delicious! The filling inside was delicate and we wished we could get one to go. Dulce the leche latte was alright.

Yelp
One of the most beautiful cafes in Minneapolis! I visited cafe ceres in their Washington Ave location in Downtown Minneapolis where the old Penny's coffee was located. Super high ceilings with large windows overlooking the Minneapolis skyline and fun summer patio. I love their coffee and pastries! Service was very friendly. Go earlier in the morning for more pasty options. Lots of people working remote or meeting friends for coffee. Parking is not super easy downtown but there is street parking nearby or paid lots.

Yelp
This place is adorable! It's perfect for a Sunday walk. It's in a beautiful building. The selection of baked goods is impressive. The pistachio croissant was a crispy delight, bursting with flavor. And oh, the dulce de leche - creamy perfection! Service was friendly, although a tad slow. Nonetheless, the delicious treats made it worth the wait! Would definitely recommend for a cozy pastry indulgence.

Yelp
Was shocked to hear that Cafe Ceres was replacing Penny's at the Washington Ave. office building lobby - they kept most of the furniture and decorations and overall atmosphere is very similar, but was just surprised to hear the news. I haven't tried Cafe Ceres' original location but since this one is very close to my apartment, it's going to be tempting to be a regular here for some great coffee and pastries. Everything here is at a pretty normal price for coffee these days, and I decided to get a small dulce de leche latte that was quite smooth n sweet. Their menu is pretty expansive and I'm looking to try something new next time. My friend got one of their seasonal pastries - a raspberry danish that was quite delicious :) I'll definitely be back on a 'feel more like splurging' day to scope out a few more of their drink items.

Yelp
This was a stop on the tour I did. It was a fun location. The coffee was good. It was worrisome bc they didn't know all the ingredients in the "spices". And the barista was bothered to have to look. Beautiful lobby area with tons of seating inside and out!

Yelp
I had such high hopes. Everything looked beautiful. The space is bright and open, natural decor, with big windows. You order at the counter where pastries and menu items are on display. I tried the Ras el Hanout Latte, by recommendation. For food, my husband and I shared the burrata tartine, muffuletta, Turkish bagel, and a croissant. My latte was probably the best thing we ordered, but it was luke warm. The tartine was dry, burnt, and bland. I was pretty sad about this. Muffuletta had good flavor, but again very dry, so it was difficult to continue to eat. Turkish bagel was okay, a little salty, they actually forgot this in our order and we had to go inquire and it took about 20 minutes. The croissant was fine, not the best in MN. It's like a cafeteria with cafeteria quality food. Maybe I caught them on a bad day, but I don't need to return.

Yelp
This review is only based on the coffee because thats all I got on my visit, I got a large iced Carob Mocha and it was $8.60, they use organic ingredients which is why the price was so high. Coffee was a 6/10. I don't think I would have it again. The pastries looked delicious.

Yelp
This place is VERY good.... However, it'll cost you a small fortune. There are many elevations that you don't anticipate. Prosciutto on a croissant sandwich is dynamite, and somehow cream cheese was supplanted by a yogurt substitute that taste incredible. I'd love to come here more often, but the price will scare many away.

Yelp
Mmmm, fantastic coffee and pastries that, together, deliver tremendous joy. The pastries are ridiculously good. Flaky, crunchy and excellent flavoring and texture. Coffee is nice and strong. Have tried an oat milk latte and a vanilla latte...both were good. My new coffee shop! Closes at 3 pm so plan accordingly to avoid disappointment.

Yelp
The crumbiest (pun intended) croissants from James Beard awarded pastry chef and absolutely delicious drinks made with farm fresh milkies! They had a lot of options and offered good advisement on what to order when in doubt. The ambience is really modern and classy feeling so i felt a little weird going in in my swishy shorts - but no judgement to be had.

Yelp
Pastries were delicious, and the views of the city were nice. The service was okay, Great place to work on Hw.

Yelp
Great latte choices- I had the vanilla one with oat milk, love the space outside and inside. There's some seating inside. My friend shared a little tip that there's outlet plugs under the cushion seats-- you will have to duck down and find them but they are there for you to charge your devices. my friend had free refills for the regular coffee drip--great idea if you are staying to work/study for 2-3 hours!

Yelp
Loved this location! The ambiance is great and I got the Dukkah latte extra hot. It was sweet and spicy.

Yelp
Great to see this space reopened as Cafe Ceres, the James Beard-nominated bakery-cafe that supplanted the original Penny's in Linden Hills and now this former Penny's in downtown's 100 Washington Square building (please take over the Wayzata spot, please!). The layout is exactly like the Penny's with minor tweaks to the central bar/cafe -- this is a good thing, as the space is gorgeous. It was originally an exterior space of the office building but later enclosed with a massive glass wall. The original structure was designed by world renowned architect Minoru Yamasaki (NYC's Twin Towers were his most famous structure) to compliment his previous design next door at what is now the ING Building (visible clearly from the windows); the original exterior panels of Vermont verde-antique marble now form the interior backwall of the cafe. The patio appears to be ready to reopen once the weather gets sane again. If you go here, try the specialty coffees inspired by Turkey: the Dukkah Latte, Ras el Hanout Latte, and Carob Mocha are all delicious and not overly sweet. of the baked goods, the Turkish Bagel with labneh and za'atar and pastries are worth the try. All-in-all this is a good addition to the downtown coffee scene and I will continue to hope that this chain expands to Wayzata and not backfill the saturated Minneapolis market.

Yelp
Delicious, though tiny, coffee, and a tasty BLT saved for lunch on a workday. Convenient location if you're in the North Loop-to-downtown borderland; will return.

Yelp
After a long wait, my breakfast sandwich was thrown at me. It was tasty, but expensive. At those prices, service should at least be civil. The high ceilings and open spaces were pleasant.

Yelp
Male barista with circular glasses was very cold to my partner and I during our visit this morning. In fact he seemed to be bothered to have to help us and take our order at all. Made us sad as we have enjoyed Cafe Ceres locations in the past, but unfortunately will not be returning in the future because of this experience!
