10 Best Coffee Shops in Puerto Rico | Condé Nast Traveler

"After the hurricanes of 2017, Café Comunión's Abner Roldan persisted, serving coffee on the street outside its ravaged café. But what would one expect from a barista so dedicated that he holds the title of Puerto Rico’s National Latte Art Champion? Roldan, a former teacher turned prize-winning barista loves to educate customers about coffee, so much so that he dedicates a podcast to it. Roldan honed his trade in another coffee capital—Portland, Ore.—before setting up this modern, Spanish tile-floored shop in the artsy Santurce neighborhood." - Kathleen Squires

Puerto Rico After Hurricane Maria: Restaurants Overcome Hardships to Forge On | Eater

"A specialty coffee shop started by a couple who trained in Portland that opened in late 2017 after Hurricane Maria delayed its planned launch when the storm shattered floor-to-ceiling windows and caused roof leaks, resulting in $6,000–$8,000 in damages. The shop emphasizes a multi-roaster approach—sourcing beans from different roasters around the world while also featuring scarce Puerto Rican coffee—and is committed to educating locals “from seed to cup” to rebuild appreciation and demand for island-grown beans. Owners aim to elevate Puerto Rican baristas and producers, increase the visibility of local coffee, and grow recognition beyond the island." - Mariela Santos

Google
The place has a pleasant atmosphere, although when we arrived it was quite crowded, and the staff didn’t seem very enthusiastic. The coffee was very good, but the food did not live up to the prices. In particular, the open-faced avocado toast was disappointing both in portion and quality. The avocado seemed like packaged guacamole instead of the real thing as advertised on the menu, and the toast was too thin. Service was average and they don’t make an extra effort. We ordered three breakfast dishes and one never came. After waiting over 20 minutes and seeing them serve people who arrived after us, I had to get up to ask about my sandwich. Apparently, they had given it to someone else. After that, it was served quickly, but I only received an apology with no further gesture. In conclusion, great coffee, but food and service that leave much to be desired for the price.

Google
The coffee was good , but unfortunately the tuna sandwich is not written like on the menu :it should be have tomatoes , lettuce ,nuece, and pesto sauce , But they forgot three materials. Another point is that I have been to many local coffee shops, but this one makes me feel very uncomfortable.

Google
5 estrellas. The coffee and pastries are consistently delicious. Service is warm, attentive and everyone greets you the moment you walk in. Music sets a comfortable mood, never too loud and the overall ambiance is vibey. Love it.

Google
Awesome coffee and best sandwiches in town! If you want to get a simple healthy but still delicious option, this is the place to go. We finished the sandwiches even before we are able to take a picture. It is so good!

Google
The staff was helpful and the shop is very Vibey. A lot of seating for working or meeting with friends. I had the iced Dirty Chai, it was delicious, very smooth and rich without being too sweet.

Google
I was slightly disappointed by Comunion. No specific reason why, the coffee was fine, the staff was polite. I don't know I just expected more for some reason. It's not bad, just not what I expected.

Google
Love coming here. Great coffee, great atmosphere and amazing food as well. Favorite spot in Santurce.

Google
Absolutely loved this place! The service was amazing — the staff were incredibly kind, polite, funny, and made us feel right at home. The food was delicious and full of flavor, and the prices were very reasonable for the quality. Such a warm, welcoming vibe — we’ll definitely be coming back. Highly recommend!

Yelp
Small coffee shop near out Airbnb in Santurce. The coffee was delicious, I had a cold brew and iced latte. We also tried some breakfast sandwiches which were yummy too. Not a lot of seating, but great place to grab food or drinks to go.

Yelp
The hotel I was staying the owners told me to try the coffee there. So I decided to check it out. It was 5 min walk from my hotel. It looked huge when I came in. Upstairs is closed now. Different seating arrangements. Looked clean enough. I ordered the capuchino & French toast. I remedially fall in love with the French toast, yummy! I loved it so much I went back the day I was leaving Puerto Rico .

Yelp
The best breakfast sandwich but I did not enjoy the latte though, hardly any coffee flavor.

Yelp
I've been here a few times now and I always really enjoy myself. They have a nice selection of rotating specialty-grade pour overs and tasty specialty drinks that make this cafe a stand out amongst its peers. Their menu is also quite good; a good mix of pastries and cooked dishes. I recommend the Jámon Queso y Huevos, and ask for the guava butter! This most recent time our food took a while to come out because their ordering system went down, so they gave us free drinks for waiting. Everyone who works here is quite nice and understanding if you don't speak Spanish well (or at all). The vibes are that of a bustling cafe but still cozy; enough to sit in and enjoy the sights, smells, and sounds.

Yelp
Awesome little cafe with plenty of seating, great food, strong coffee and a cute backyard patio. Located in the heart of San Juan, you should be able to finally plenty of street parking, both paid or non-paid. I ordered their version of an avocado toast, which was absolutely delicious and tasted quite fresh! If coming to do some laptop work, make sure to have it fully charged and be prepared to use your phone as hotspot, as they don't have outlets nor wifi. I had some great back and forth banter with the folks behind the counter, which was great for me to practice my spanish.

Yelp
Great breakfast sandwiches and coffee. The sandwich needed some sauce in it, was a bit dry but tasty. Large portions. Just took a bit of time for the food and drink to arrive. Self serve water station was a nice touch.

Yelp
The manager is rude and disrespectful to his own staff. Food and services was OK but the if the employees are intimidated thier manager they cant perform at their best potential.

Yelp
English review: The atmosphere of the place is lovely, whether it's for a quick cup of coffee or sitting down to enjoy their brunch varieties. Located in a good area, it has seating areas inside and outside. In the front they have some tables and chairs, but my favorite area is the terrace that they have in the back! Excellent to work quietly on the computer or have a brunch date. The food is always fresh and delicious. I do wish the coffee was sweetened a bit more, it tends to be a bit tart for my taste, but still very good!

Yelp
Cafe Comunión has such great coffee and food! I was so happy to have stumbled into the shop while visiting the city. Both times I ordered an iced latte and for breakfast I had the French toast and egg scramble with veggies. The staff is super kind and friendly. The merch they sell is also very cool!

Yelp
Cafe Communion is coolest cafe I've been to in Puerto Rico! The staff, the logo, the atmosphere, and the drinks are all equally interesting. I ordered the trópico sándwich and it was very pleasant. I think I actually enjoyed the salad even more though! I recommend checking out the outdoor area in the back if you're looking for a quieter vibe. I'll be coming back if I visit again!

Yelp
Terrific latte, very good iced coffee, well executed French toast and a creative open faced smoked salmon sandwich all met or exceeded expectations. Super friendly, prompt service and appropriate prices for the quality of the product delivered all added to a "will come back" experience. Net/net: a coffee house that takes its craft seriously.

Yelp
Serving up onyx beans so can't really go wrong. The latte was smooth, delicious and the perfect temp. Staff was very friendly and it has the authentic work from coffee shop feel. We also had two types of avocado toast and both were tasty.

Kevin J.

Yelp
I went there with a friend, the coffee was bad, it tasted like the milk had spoiled. And also I ordered a tuna sandwich and it had hair strands (probably from the person who prepared it). I didn't finish my sandwich after that bite, obviously I was disgusted. Also the person behind the register wasn't the most welcoming. My friend enjoyed her meal so I didn't make a big deal of it, but I definitely didn't enjoy my first experience there. Especially when I paid over $22.

Yelp
Don't like giving poor reviews for local restaurants but we have been a couple times and haven't loved it. Got a fried egg that tasted off, a chocolate croissant that tastes a few days old and very dry, and the breakfast sandwhiches are super bread heavy. We asked for it to go but got it on plates. Not a huge deal but probably won't come back again for breakfast!

Yelp
Visiting on vacation. Found this small coffee shop, and fell in love with this place. Wonderful latte and sticky buns for breakfast. I will be back :)

Yelp
Honestly some of the most knowledgeable and friendly Baristas in all of Puerto Rico! The coffee is AMAZING and the service really is something else!!!

Daylene M.

Yelp
I was very excited to try this place after following them for a year on Instagram. I recently saw that they competed at a barista competition in Portland with places like Cat & Cloud from Santa Cruz. My family and I were underwhelmed with our much awaited experience. The lady running the register was less than friendly and helpful. One of the baristas overheard us wanting a pour over and he corrected the misinformation the lady gave us. Then the manager told the barista to come with him and let the less than helpful lady run the register. Customer service was not good, ambiance was meh, food was adequate but coffee was delicious. Even though the coffee was delicious we will stop following on IG and do not have plans to return. Spotted 787 coffee so we'll try that next.

Yelp
Stopped by to check out Santurce's newest coffee shop opened up by awesome Award-Winning Barista Abner Roldan and was glad I did. After a short time spent in Portland, OR, he returned to the island to open up his own shop near where I first met him at Hacienda San Pedro. The shop is a cool modern space with plenty of seating, relaxed environment and open concept so you can see him at work. They offer quite a variety of coffee drinks as well as pastries made by local bakeries to support the local community. But the best part of being here is the coffee! Whether you're into a great espresso, latte art, or just looking for a kick in the morning, this is your place. It's also a great place to come work with free Wifi provided and plenty of lighting that doesn't overwhelm but doesn't keep you squinting. I hope he soon starts selling coffee beans by the pound, but for now you can get his coffee prepared by the master himself.

Naomi M.

Yelp
Horrible service! Messed up my order after having waited a whole 40 minutes for only a latte. Then reordered the correct one and they took another 30 minutes. For a freaking latte. Never coming here again.

Yelp
Didn't get anything here but a cortadito, but it was great. Clean, urban contemporary vibe and centrally located on JPDL in Santurce. Welcoming place to meet for a chat with a friend or to catch up on some work with your laptop.

Yelp
Great coffee. Good food. Nice people. Ignore the "hipster", "expensive", "no son independistas" irrelevant comments. It's a good spot.

Yelp
More interesting menu than abracadabra across the street. Good vibes and delicious breakfast!

Yelp
Cool atmosphere, great coffee, firendly staff. Free wifi, also few electric outlets for charging available, so you can work for hours (great coffee shop for work).

Yelp
Really nice place, clean, hipster, and cozy, high quality barista and enthusiastic about coffee, good pastries, a must try

Yelp
Overpriced food. $10 for a basic sandwich and coffee. The coffee was great and is a good place to study

Migdalia R.

Yelp
I was on vacation in P.R. My Air B&B host recommended this place. Rude staff while taking the order and when I informed them that my hot chocolate was lukewarm (e.g., rolled eyes and had an attitude). The eggs were burned on the edges and not hot, and I got three slices of "cold cuts" ham. They put jam on my croissant (not on the menu nor informed me) and it was so sweet I could not eat it. I would not recommend this place.

N J.

Yelp
They have excellent coffee, amazing service, and great food. Definitely a recommend but it is slightly more expensive than your average coffee shops

Yelp
Best coffeeshop in SJ, and my personal favorite in PR. Great space to work, too. The owners are wonderful and knowledgeable, always willing to share their expertise with anyone. They take a lot of pride in their craft and their space, so don't expect them to take crap from rude or inconsiderate costumers... even if it means getting a petty "bad" review. Trust me, the place is great.
google avatar

Gerardo V.

Yelp
Great coffee shop with very friendly service. We had two lattes, french toasts and a Croissant sandwhich... everything was great. Highly recommend.
google avatar

Camille R.

Yelp
The food was not good and very overpriced, went there with my puppy and got really weird and rude stares from the owners very judgy ! No attention to costumer by staff whatsoever!!! overall a tense vibe also they don't have power outlets so if you plan to study it'll be a hassle and it was just a really bad experience ! Would not recommend

Jose L.

Yelp
Hip, no-nonsense coffee shop. Owners are coffee experts and are always around. Staff is very friendly. Great vibe & music. Stellar coffee, needless to say. Highly recommended for coffee enthusiasts. Tip: Possibly the best chocolate chip cookie around.
google avatar

Miguel C.

Yelp
Overpriced for what you get. Payed $15 for Romesco and cappuccino. The Romesco consisted of a single egg over a single toast with some salad on the side, for $11 it's a very very small portion. I expected a WAOOO taste but got instead stale bread and cheap eggs. I raise free range chickens and I can tell this is cheap overseas eggs :( On the other hand the coffee is good. But do keep in mind the barista will serve frequent customers and leave new comers for last. My final opinion, I expected something better. I will not return even if I get invited I will say no thank you.
google avatar

Anjélica O.

Yelp
Great coffee, actually they have a great variety of coffee blends. Baristas are super nice and always looking forward to make the coffee just how you like it. Abner the owner noticed that I was leaving half of my coffee and he asked why i was doing that and he asked how i liked my black coffee. Needless to say that for my next visit he did the coffee just how i told him. Food is good, they have options but the basic option such as scrambled eggs with toasts not yet there. Also pastry is fenomenal, they get it from one of the best local bakeries.
google avatar

Paul A.

Yelp
Cute hipster spot like all other cute hipster spots that follow the gentrification starter pack they all seem to preorder off amazon. Nothing unusual or special here but why fix a thing that ain't broken? I was upset that the coffee was $3.35 for something that tasted like every other damn hipster spot for cheaper, which still isn't as good as a real cup of Puerto Rican coffee you can get for a dollar anywhere else that hasn't been touched by the magic touch Midas, and by Midas I mean the white man. I was also upset that for my $3.35 the cafe did not provide me with good selfie lighting. That in mind if you like cozy cafes and are in the area you should stop by.

Viviana B.

Yelp
Nice coffee, nice people, ok pastries, good space for work
