Café De La Esquina Review - Williamsburg - New York - The Infatuation

"The folks at La Esquina were smart to tone it down when they made the venture across the East River to Williamsburg. An exclusive dungeon dining room guarded by a guy with a clipboard and a ponytail might work just fine in Nolita, but that stuff ain’t gonna play in Brooklyn. Instead, management took their successful formula of street tacos + sexy restaurant and applied it to a Williamsburg appropriate venue, the old Wythe diner (most recently home to a restaurant called Relish). The old school diner remains in tact, but a taco stand has been added, and playing the role of sexy downstairs dungeon is a dark, loungey back room. We like it. A lot. As for residents, mustache enthusiasts and super fans of Williamsburg, reaction to this La Esquina has been mixed. Most of the complaints tend to come in the price department, and to some extent, we understand that. When you’ve got La Superior down the street slinging gangster tacos at $2.50 a piece, you’re gonna catch flak for prices that are almost double that. But we tend to think there’s room for more both approaches, and we’re glad La Esquina opened it’s doors in the ’Burg. They’ve got an amazing patio for the summer months and are doing a serviceable brunch too, which adds to its Infatuation friendliness. The menu is pretty much the same as what you’ll find in Manhattan, plus a few surprises like a burger and some mole meatballs. Service is a little sluggish, but everyone is friendly, so as long as you keep putting back Modelos from the tap and are cool with spending a little cash, you should come away happy. Quesadilla De Huitlacoche This tasty, mushroomy quesadilla with corn and Mexican truffle is unique and delicious, and it’s a La Esquina specialty. Order it.Cangrejo Tostada Our favorite of the tostadas on the menu. Cool crab meat is piled high on a half-dollar sized tostada with mango and spicy mayo. It’s one big bite of goodness, and it should be on your table.Tinga De Pollo Chicken might not be the sexiest tostada option on the menu, but across the board, La Esquina’s slow-cooked, shredded chicken is a winner.Elotes Callejeros Don’t mess around. Each person at the table needs to have an ear of this grilled corn in hand. You’ll be smiling...with sht in your teeth.Taquitos I’m not even sure why they’re called taquitos, because as far as we can tell, these are tacos. Someone send over a translator. Until then, we’ll tell you that we love the pork (shoulder and pulled) and the fish tacos. On our last visit, the “fish” was actually shark. At least that’s what our waitress told us. Can you put shark in a taco? Isn’t that against some kind of maritime law?Mole Enchiladas If you’re down with some mole, you’ll love these enchiladas. Just don’t expect to see a big cheesy mess arrive at the table, like you might at a Tex-Mex joint. These are relatively dry, and slightly sweet and smoky - just like a good mole should be.Hamburguesa* We don’t need a translator to tell you that means hamburger. There’s no mistaking it ones this arrives at your table either. It’s a hamburger alright. We liked the pickled jalapeños on top, but that’s about all that sets this apart. Skip it. Food Rundown Empanadas We’ve always liked the empanadas at La Esquina, and they’re a special every now and again here at the Café. If you get the opportunity, hit the spinach and cheese ones." - Chris Stang

Delicious steamed buns. Stopped in for lunch on a work trip and had bao I’ll be thinking about for weeks when I get back to the Midwest. Good service, decent atmosphere - very “trendy lunch spot in downtown” vibes but not super tiny or expensive.

What caught my eye at Cafe De Lasie was the promise of delicious pork belly buns—a must-try for any fan of the dish. I was pleased to discover that they're a partner with American Airlines Dining, which made the visit even more appealing. Upon arrival, the staff were friendly and patient as we made our selections. We decided on the 6-pack of buns and the cheesesteak eggrolls to get a good feel for their menu. The location is great, situated on a corner right across from a parking garage, with some paid street parking available. The buns were the star of the show. We tried a variety, and the honey Sriracha chicken buns were the absolute favorite. The flavor was incredible—just the right amount of heat from the Sriracha, balanced perfectly by a hint of honey. The pork belly buns were also flavorful and satisfying. While the shrimp and tofu buns were decent, I wasn't a fan of the sauce on the shrimp. However, I'd recommend skipping the cheesesteak eggrolls. They were extremely greasy and didn't live up to the standard set by the buns. The next time I visit, I'm definitely going straight for a full order of the chicken and pork belly buns. I also noticed the bowls on the menu and they looked delicious, so I'll be sure to give one a try next time, too. Overall, it was a great experience, and I'll definitely be back for more of those amazing buns!

The food was phenomenal, no notes. The portion of miso was bigger than expected for a side, and the crispy shrimp with the tangy sauce was very elevated. The pork belly had this good flavor with a nice bit of fat to really take the dish to the next level.

The staff was super friendly. It was not busy at the time we went. Real chill. Just after lunch time. The seating was interesting as there was no cushions. Just hard wood on the benches and the chairs. The pricing was probably reasonable for the area. For 2 people it was about $45 including 15% tip at checkout. I normally would do 20 but they're not giving you table service. We got 2 sandwiches. Honey Sriracha Chicken Po Boy. Very good. A little spicy. The Fried Shrimp Po Boy. Tasty but spicier than expected. Lit our mouths on fire. Which I'm a fan of. Then Texas Toast and Togarashi Fries. The toast was good. The fries were better especially with the dipping sauce. Followed that with a custom bubble tea and fruit tea. Personally not a fan of bubble tea so can't really speak on it, but I loved the peachy mango w/black tea. Would definitely go back. Check it out if you're in the area.

Cute fast casual restaurant. My (chicken) bahn mi sandwich was pretty good. My daughter said her burger was amazing. The steamed bun with chicken sriracha was very tasty. The taro cheesecake was okay. Taro is one of my favorite flavors ever, and I was a little disappointed. However, the Vietnamese iced coffee was horrible and undrinkable. What a waste of too many dollars! I've had Vietnamese coffee from so many different places, and I don't know how this was supposed to be the same drink.

Café de L’Asie’s rice and bulgogi bowls are pure bliss! 🍚🔥 Tender, flavorful bulgogi over perfect rice, topped with fresh veggies. A crave-worthy combo—extremely satisfying and oh-so-delicious!

Found this place last minute and decided to give it a try. I ordered the Bulgogi Rice Bowl and it was fantastic. I also got the Honey Sriracha Chicken steamed bun which was just as good! The bowl had generous portions of everything, especially for the price ($12.50 for the bowl). I ordered the Vietnamese Iced Coffee, upon ordering I was warned by the staff that it was “very strong and bitter,” which I’ve had Vietnamese coffee before so that was no issue with me. The coffee was indeed very strong, which I personally love but I could see where it may be too much for some people not familiar with it. I think the staff using the word “bitter” might turn some people away from trying it as the bitterness was balanced well with the milk. It was Sunday around lunch time and this place was dead, which I hate to see. I love trying places all over OKC and had personally never heard of them, just randomly found on Google Maps. I hope they can get some marketing together (if you see this, hit me up 😂) and start becoming more popular.
