The Best Hot Chocolates in Montreal - Eater Montreal

"This Italian-style staple café for NDG has somewhat of a laid-back southern European vibe, and while it offers a long list of espresso-based drinks, there’s also a top-notch hot chocolate for dunking your favourite biscotti. There’s another location in Old Montreal, perfectly located for a warm-up after a ramble around the city’s oldest district." - Karin Murray-Bergquist

Great casual terrace to enjoy your coffee outdoors. Sit and chat for as long as you like. Some people had their dogs. I had a single shot latte which was good, but I’d probably go for a double shot next time. They have some croissants and cookies but I didn’t see any food.

The coffee is delicious and I’m so glad that the barista comes to one of our schools near Monkland. Best part walking distance!

I came across an advertisement on Instagram for this café, and I arranged a day for my family to visit in order to enjoy a cappuccino and croissant, as I have a strong affinity for these items. It was Saturday noon. I ordered two cappuccinos plus a croissant, brownie and 2 slice of cake. The guy who received the order could hardly hear. We took care of ourselves, despite having paid for the services. The cappuccino was predominantly composed of milk, with little discernible flavor of coffee.(Almost latte) The cake lacked freshness, and the croissant had a tangerine flavor that did not appeal to my taste. It was not something I anticipated.

Adorable little cafe located on Monkland street, not much space but enough for you and your friend to spend the day sip coffee and be on your laptop. definitely has this modern style deco. their coffee is strong and desirable. their deserts are incredibly good. I am definitely going back

You need to try this place. I went to get a sandwich on Friday, may 16th at 3:30 and the service I received was INCREDIBLE. The employees were so kind and loving. They even took the time to compliment my hair. I went in for a few minutes, and they literally made my day. That is what a coffee shop is all about: warmth and friendliness!

Looking for the perfect espresso in Montreal? Café de' Mercanti on Monkland Ave is a true gem that brings a slice of Italy right to NDG! 🇮🇹☕️ From the moment you walk in, the aroma of freshly brewed coffee hits you, and you know you’re in for something special. Their espresso is hands-down one of the best in the city—rich, smooth, and authentically Italian, just like in Rome. Whether you’re a coffee purist or love a creamy cappuccino, you’ll find your new favorite here. The vibe is cozy and welcoming, with friendly staff who make you feel like a regular even on your first visit. There’s plenty of seating inside and a cute garden terrace for sunny days—perfect for catching up with friends or enjoying a quiet moment with a book. Don’t miss their pastries and fresh cannoli, piped to order and absolutely delicious. Café de' Mercanti is more than just a coffee shop—it’s a neighborhood hub with a real community feel. If you’re in NDG, do yourself a favor and stop by for a true Italian coffee experience. Highly recommended!

Google
This place feels like my own little secret café—like I discovered it myself. But truth is, they’ve been around for 13 years. Came in to meet a friend. First time here. The vibes? Chill, unpretentious, and welcoming. Feels like a cozy living room or your best friend’s kitchen. You’re greeted by the rich aroma of fresh-ground coffee, the soft murmur of conversation, and a counter full of homemade cookies and pastries—some familiar, all tempting. Prices are fair for a personalized experience. $3 for an Earl Grey tea with steamed milk, served in a glass if you’re staying in. $4 for a smooth Americano. Behind the espresso machine, a cool-looking gent with salt-and-pepper hair. At the counter, a friendly woman who welcomed me when she heard it was my first visit. The decor? Purposefully unfinished—or maybe just always evolving. My wife asked if it was under construction. I said, Yes, like our busy lives—always in progress. Long story short, it’s now on my go-to list—for coffee, good company, or just sitting alone, writing Google reviews.

Yelp
Latte was okay. Croissant was a bit chewy. There isn't a lot of places to sit. But nothing is terrible.

Yelp
We found Cafe Mercanti in Old port. The owner is so kind and welcoming. He is an italian guy, the shop has all authentic italian products. Tasting the coffee, you can tell it's real italian. He gave us a free pastry after some conversation. I would recommend this cafe to anyone in old port looking for a little snack and drink!

Yelp
This is a fabulous neighborhood cafe. Staff was friendly and service was fast. Lots of seating, inside and out. Their garden terrace was really cute. On this particular day, the community gathered for one of the World Cup games. It was very fun to witness. I've never thought to watch a game at a coffee shop EVER, but why not? Even passers by had to stop from across the street to try and catch a glimpse of the game. I made a very long journey for what some Yelpers claimed to be the best cannoli but it was the smallest thing I've ever seen! I guess that's a thing in MTL. Small or large. There was no option here, but another MTL bakery had that option. As opposed America where one size fits all --- XL always. Anyway, quite disappointing but tasted alright. I suppose it's hard to beat a cannoli from Boston's North End. The coffee was well made but wasn't worth the journey. Perhaps I just had such high hopes. Otherwise, a great coffee shop and would definitely stop by if I was in the area.

Yelp
After having this place on my list forever I went for coffee today. I had heard great things from others... Overall cute cafe located on Monkland away from all the restaurants, bars and other coffee shops. I am huge latte lover and went for one of course. Sadly, I wasn't really impressed. The foam wasn't that great and that makes a huge difference. Having had many fabulous lattes, I am little harder to please ;-) Having said that it's a good place to try at least once when you're in the area :-)

Yelp
One of my fave coffee shops in Montreal! The coffee is fabulous. The pastries are delicious. Staff is friendly. Cute interior with a display of art for sale. Terrace outside. Free parking on adjacent streets. Can't ask for better!! I had a cortado and a gluten-free choco-coconut cookie. OMG. Delish. Everyone should go! One downer though, there's no wifi if you want to do some work.

Yelp
Best coffee around! This place provides the community a place to be and just makes it better! Plus the desserts are locally made and delicious. Do yourself a favor and try the blonde!

Yelp
I was walking in the Monkland village and stumbled across this place. I knew they had a location in the old Port but I didn't realize their original location was here. I ordered a machiatto and a cannolo. The only cannoli's I like are from Patisserie San Marco but I heard that they piped these fresh to order so figured they were worth a try. Very good cannolo, made with a ricotta filling and went nicely with my coffee. They had tons of outdoor seating for summer which was cool.

Yelp
Great staff amazing coffee.. love this place to just grab a coffee and go or simply hang out by their terrace specially during nice weather

Yelp
I have been here a few times and have been consistently impressed by the warmth and friendliness of the staff, as well as how well they know their regulars! I'm no coffee drinker but it smells amazing and judging from their excellent cookies and hot chocolate, I'd bet it's as good as it smells.

Yelp
Small place with wonderful smelling of coffee, nice terrasse, croissants et crême glacé disponible, original choice of ice cream : "Pinnaple and Basil" just delicious !!

Yelp
Café de' Mercanti is that type of cafe you want to keep hidden for yourself and a few locals. However, I have dismissed these feelings after reflecting upon the greater reality I have thanks to Yelp. And though it does not demand it, I want to respect my link to Yelp by sharing this review and these pictures of the café that is de' Mercanti. Mercanti is found on Monkland where it's just busy enough to give the pleasant feel of a cosmopolitan café though equally tranquil for introspective activities. It's an Italian café (with an Italian épicerie just adjacent) with some elements of the more old-school Italian sport cafés you find in little Italy (ie the television), though beauty and elegance permeate the space: marble, an array of Italian pastries, shiny moka pots, imported packaged treats, well displayed gelato, and fine service. I want to go back.

Yelp
We went to get gelato for my toddler. Picked the mango flavor and it was really good. He ate the whole thing! Service here was excellent. There's a room in the back with ample seating but it was not air conditioned and ended up being like a furnace in mid July. The outdoor seating was much nicer. We enjoyed the gelato but it was a bit difficult to manage a kid here.

Yelp
amazing strong italian coffee. service is very good and friendly, beautiful space with lots of seating and a cute terrace in a lovely neighborhood.

Yelp
My fav coffee shop so far. Cozy little place. Fair prices, very nice staff. What I recommend: amazing sandwiches (eggplant it's a MUST) if you are hungry, delicious cannoli and a hot chocolate to die! Oh, and just before spring they sell zeppole, so sad they don't make them all year long.

Yelp
Really nice atmosphere and fair prices! Artsy and cosy, so it's excellent for an afternoon chat with friends or to do some studying! I tried their decaf latte and Americano, both quite good :) It's really relaxing to be here because it's in a quiet neighbourhood and the interior decor very tasteful. I would recommend this café to all of you!

Yelp
Need to go back to Canada for this!!! Loved this spot when I came to visit montreal. Also the shop is located in such a cute walking area with tons of small shops near.

Yelp
Really lovely Italian cafe, great service. The coffee is fabulous. Once more people find out about this little jewel of a place it's going to have a line out the door! You should go - very pretty inside, nice people working there.

Yelp
The 2 coffees were good. No internet access and no excuse for it. I was asked to move since artists were hanging their art on the cafe's walls I guess I came in renovation day? It was hard to enjoy while hammering was going on inside.

Greta E.

Yelp
Small, cozy café that has become for me an obligate Sunday stop! Although i have yet to try it myself, the sight and the smell of their sandwiches & pastries have tested my will power more than once. The only issue is that they close pretty early but otherwise, a little Monkland gem!

Yelp
The best coffee shop I've been. The owner's always friendly and he makes great coffee. Highly recommend

Yelp
Always delicious! Friendly staff . Love their gluten free options for desserts. Parking isn't always easy, but sooooo worth it !
google avatar

Yelp
Better than average coffee. Decent deserts. Nice ambiance. Better in summer when terrace is open. A little west of monkland village, so less people watching.
google avatar

Yelp
Wonderful coffee shop! In additional to regular desserts, they offer many varieties of gluten-free desserts.

Yelp
I took my son for a stroll today and stopped by this cafe for a Mocha.. I gave the order and my coffee was ready fairly quickly.. I stepped out and took the first sip of my drink, realizing not only it wasn't hot, it wasn't even lukewarm! Very disappointed that the barista wasn't patient enough to get the milk temperature right.. in a day that there wasn't a single person in the line other than me!
google avatar

Yelp
Delicious coffee, excellent selection of fresh treats, including a good variety available gluten free. Also a lovely terrasse, it's a weekend favourite!

Yelp
This cafe is right around the corner which pretty much saved my life many a time since my boyfriend didn't have a coffee machine for MONTHS! Friendly staff, great service cozy, welcoming atmosphere and amazing coffee & treats! 10/10

Yelp
Nice Italian cafe located in NDG. They have a pretty decent variety of pastries and Italian sodas. The biscotti had me salivating across the glass display. The latte I ordered was full in flavour and had a creamy, silky texture. Coffee lovers - this place is a must.
google avatar

Roberto C.

Yelp
Best coffee in the area! The deserts (especially the ice cream) and sandwiches are also great. I strongly recommend the Affogato (espresso with a scope of ice cream...best with hazelnut ice cream).
google avatar

Dorothee H.

Yelp
I have tried more than 15 places for cappuccino all over Montreal and this was my favorite! So nice and creamy, yet not too heavy. The perfect balance!

Mounir N.

Yelp
This guy is one man army. The pastries are definitely not store bought. The tea, macchiato, and the lattes were definitely local and coffee beans are definitely fresh farmed. I wish the best for this cafe. A great local and nice place you can sit down and enjoy yourself

Yelp
Excellent cappuccinos - always warm service, reminds me of Italy. Nice outside chairs and tables , cozy inside. I've grown attached to it. Bonus is homemade takeaway dinner portion pasta, sauces, meatballs etc at reasonable prices right next door!

J B.

Yelp
Small servings of very fresh, delicious coffee. Sort of the anti-Starbucks--portions are much smaller than even the smallest Starbucks coffee, but the coffee is a lighter roast very flavourful and not bitter.

Vitaly K.

Yelp
Tiny place but great true Italian coffee and hot fresh croissants Glad to discover this place
google avatar

Yelp
This is a great little neighborhood place. The coffee is great and is made the way it is made in Italy. They have a variety of pastries and a huge assortment of imported Italian goodies. I haven't tried the hot chocolate yet but it looks absolutely decadent. It's become my go to place in the neighborhood.

Alex K.

Yelp
A very good neighborhood coffee place. Superb coffee and pastries. The place is small but cozy, one table inside and a bench outside. Two nice girls make great coffee. The place smells so good! Come in the morning, chat with the girls, grab a cappuccino and go with a smile.

Yelp
Great coffee shop in Monkland village. Always make a point to stop by whenever I walk by :)

Nicola P.

Yelp
Very cosy cafe with delicious goodies and very good Italian coffees. Would recommend!

Mattie T.

Yelp
I fell in love with this cafe as soon as I entered the place. I like the TV playing, the cozy atmosphere, it is really like being in your living room except you're drinking a fabulous latte and you have a whole range of typical Italian pastries to choose from. I recommend the sfogliatella : it's heaven in your mouth. The staff is cool and despite the fact that the room is small, it's still very comfortable. A jewel on Monkland!! Will return for sure!!!

François L.

Yelp
Simply put, the best coffee in the neighbourhood. Never bitter, but full of body and taste. Their baked goods are also great.
