The Best Hot Chocolates in Montreal | Eater Montreal

"This Italian-style staple café for NDG has somewhat of a laid-back southern European vibe, and while it offers a long list of espresso-based drinks, there’s also a top-notch hot chocolate for dunking your favourite biscotti. There’s another location in Old Montreal, perfectly located for a warm-up after a ramble around the city’s oldest district." - Karin Murray-Bergquist

Google
Amazing coffee and fresh pastries! such a nice view of an Old Montreal street if you choose to sit by the window. The cookie was warm and tender, I loved it so much!

Google
I had a cappuccino and a pastry in here. Both were really good. Appreciate they had vegan options for milk. Nothing extraordinary but definitely a cafe worth visiting.

Google
Authentic, imported Italian pasta and sauces here. Good range of pastries. I bought this gluten free chocolate banana cookie thing which looked like a scoop of ice cream but tasted healthy - like oat base with chocolate bits and notes of banana. Quite fluffy- it was OK. The cafe isn't the best for working as it is small with just bar tables and seating, but it is good for some light groceries, a scoop of ice cream/ gelato or coffee to take walking, and authentic Italian pasta. Staff is very friendly, helpful, and charismatic.

Google
The coffee tasted great, and the food was high quality. I got a latte, and the coffee and milk blend was fabulous! I would say it’s important to note for Americans, that the sizing of the latte is much smaller than a typical latte size in the US. Their sparking drinks they have in cans for purchase are so good! My partner and I also got two of their sandwiches. The meat and veggies were super fresh!! To top it off, the brownie and cookie we got had amazing flavor, and were definitely made the day of. The staff was great and helped us greatly. The only con I found was that there was no nearby outdoor seating, and the indoor barstool chairs weren’t the most comfortable or available.

Austin Gurley

Google
The latte I had from here was nice and bittersweet. The cafe itself was a bit small and seemed more of a place to get things to go rather than to sit down in my opinion. The employee was also quite accommodating for me as well. (Sorry for not reviewing in French)

Google
Just came here for the first time and its my new favorite little place. The man working right now is so kind, and just gave me a free matcha taster. The atmosphère is perfect: he has a small speaker in the corner softly playing ambiant music and it is not loud whatsoever. Just a perfect little spot. He even sell essential oils! Such a chill environment to work in or chat.

Google
Cozy little café in Old Montreal. The barista spoke well French and English, and she was patient with us since we were not sure what to order. I tried an Affogato, and it was amazing! We also tried the big, salted caramel cookie and the Big oreo cookie. The taste of the cookie are delicious, but they were dry.

Google
I had this chicken sandwich and one chocolate chip coconut cookie sans gluten. Each were enjoyable.

Yelp
The sandwiches! They were so fresh and they warm them up for you which is great. The focaccia they are on is soft and flakey. The latte was also great. The Nutella finger was okay but the amaretto cookie was to die for. The servers were very kind. There was a clean bathroom you could use. We would visit again.

Yelp
A small quaint shop on the edge of Old Montreal. It was near my hotel and they have some good drinks. If you're looking for regular coffee though they don't have. They only serve espresso drinks.

Yelp
Dining method: Counter-serve Item(s) ordered: Cappuccino and chocolate banana gluten-free cookie Value: Fairly-priced! The Review: Café de Mercanti serves up delicious, classic espresso in a cute café space. They also have Italian products and sundries for sale. The cappuccino was smooth and delicious. I was also impressed by the amount of gluten-free pastry options available. I chose the chocolate chip banana, which was dry, so I recommend trying one of the other delicious-looking options. In spite of this (not uncommon) gluten-free cookie conundrum, I will definitely be back when in MTL. Thank you!

Yelp
I really enjoyed exploring and finding this place within a few blocks of my hotel... I saw it was highly rated and wanted a good cup of coffee... And breakfast. I ordered my raspberry and custard danish to pair with my Americano coffee... but I also wanted something more substantial so I went with the pancetta. Well, I thought I was ordering the pancetta, when I pointed at the item with the sign for it, it was actually a ham and cheese croissant...but until they served it I didn't know that's what I had pointed to. When I questioned it that it didn't look like pancetta they said that people always mix that up... I guess maybe they ought to display it differently, but they happily made me the pancetta and I took it to go because at that point I had already bit into the ham and cheese and that along with the danish and coffee, it was enough for then... They didn't charge me for the pancetta! That was NICE, so I gave them an extra tip in the jar, because they were very gracious about it. The danish was very good and went nicely with the coffee. I enjoyed my window seat overlooking the street (until the bee came....) Later, when I went to eat the pancetta, I unwrapped it and found it to be barely filled with any meat, but certainly plenty of greens. It wasn't pleasant, so I didn't really take but a couple bites before throwing that away. I'm glad I didn't pay for it, if that's how it normally comes. Overall I'd go again and order the danish and coffee. The ham and cheese was actually pretty good too. But I'd be careful on the pancetta.. maybe it was a one-off situation.

Yelp
First coffee we tried in Montreal and it did not disappoint. I had a cappuccino and it was perfect!! I also tried the pain au chocolate and it was fresh and flaky! The two girls behind the counter were super friendly and gave great recommendations. The cafe also has some Italian items to buy (they have the bag of Nutella biscuits ) If you are in Montreal definitely stop here for a coffee and pastry!

Yelp
We stopped in on a Saturday morning for coffee and ended up leaving with a wonderful assortment of frozen homemade Italian dishes for dinner. There's also some great looking sandwiches pasta to choose from. Nice, unexpected morning find!

Yelp
Cute spot.. espresso was great and the croissant fresh... Service friendly... Close walk from old Montreal.

Yelp
Very cute café with coffee, pastries, gelato, paninis, and a little grocery department. My fiancé and I got two unsweetened iced lattes with nonfat milk. Strong, bold, and delicious!

Yelp
Service: excellent, super friendly, quick and helpful (May I add, a bit flirty). Café resto:the counter beautiful, all wooden tables, counters with brick wall, but the back of the café destroys the decor overall. In the back, the gelato fridge doesn't go well with the decor; it's a mismatch. The back looks like garbage with boxes and cork boards... it just kills the vibe. Food: brownie with chocolate and hazelnut super dry; the whole thing crumbled on my plate sadly. Drink: cold coffee, the only best thing I really enjoyed. Overall 6/10

Yelp
Tiny coffee shop but with great ham and cheese croissants and a mortadella-capicola-salami sandwich that was filling and tasty. Hot chocolate was good enough, but not the best I had on the same vacation week. The hanging plants near the window are pretty to look at while breaking your fast. Great way to start the day!
google avatar

Yelp
More of a breakfast place which is fine but when we came for a mid-afternoon snack all they had were some cookies for dessert. Coffee was good tho!
google avatar

Cindy Y.

Yelp
The first time I visited this place, I really enjoyed their cafe mocha. It was made with dark chocolate and proper strength to boot. Unfortunately, the second time I visited the place the same espresso drink tasted weak. My friend said the same thing about her latte, that it tasted watered down. Perhaps the owner was rushing thru our drinks and pulled the shots too early because there were others waiting. I would have given this coffee place a 5 star if the quality were consistent.

Yelp
Cute little cafe in old Montreal. Coffee, drinks, sandwiches and desserts available.

Yelp
A cozy cafe now offer many choices of European grocery. I was visiting the old port and I walked pass by and on a small blackboard I found they have zeppole. I was curious about this item and I am glad I got one. The pastry is for St Joseph's day. A tradition from Italy. It filled with custard or cheese and chocolate. It worth the money. They offer fresh sandwiches too, coming in combo, about 10$. I am also interested in those too. Will come back later.

Yelp
Excellent little cafe. We found it while wondering around Old Town. We had cappuccinos and croissants. It was so good we went back the next morning for breakfast. The gentleman behind the counter was very sweet and gave us some great recommendations for restaurants in the area.

Maisie S.

Yelp
Kind staff and great food! Would definitely recommend to anyone in old Montréal! Love!

Yelp
I randomly passed through this gem of a cafe, mainly because I really needed to charge my phone. Instead, I encountered a menu of coffee drinks that was more out of Italy than I have encountered before, with a really cool and friendly barista who I'm assuming was the owner. I go to a lot of coffee shops, and there were two or three forms of Italian espresso drinks I'd never seen before. I had the marocchino - an espresso topped with a bit of milk foam and sprinkled with cocoa. Fantastic. Even though this place is close to a touristy area of Montreal, it was full of warmth and quality drinks. The barista was also well-versed in multiple languages and treated everyone like friends. Definitely the place to stop by if you're in the area.

Yelp
Cute little cafe run by two very friendly gentleman. Nicely prepared espresso drinks and fresh pastries and sandwiches. Minimal seating inside and out.

Roasted Unroasted C.

Yelp
Roasted: found this place while in Montreal and it had one of the best ratings in the city for coffee. Overall it was a great coffee shop - I enjoy the Italian feel mixed with a modern twist. It's a cute coffee shop with plenty of seating, good food choices and a simple coffee menu. You get your choices of latte, espresso and cappuccino pretty much just like you would in Italy. No flavors are offered just good old sugar at your table. We ordered our drinks for here and got them in glass cups with a spoon. The guy working was friendly yet urgent working as fast as he could with a line. My latte could have been a bit better - the espresso sat for too long so I got a slight bitter taste but the milk was tasty and the temperature was spot on. No latte art but I do love the chocolate topping on mine. I'd recommend this place if you enjoy basic but good coffee. Unroasted: cute lil shop in old Montréal. I found this place by its rating on google and it didn't disappoint. The barista was a lil busy but still managed to greet us and ask for our order. My latte was perfect and didn't need to add any sugar. The shop is small but uses every inch of space. The decor all matches and love the bar looking outside. I recommend this place and would travel to seek it out. I feel I was missing latte art and it would had been a 5.

Yelp
I had gone to the original location before and when I found out there was another cafe Mercanti I made sure to check it out. This place is as lovely as the one in NDG! Staff is really friendly, coffee is great and their food is delish. My sister and I shared the coconut and chocolate gluten free cookie, a pistachio bar, and a salami sandwich. I highly recommend the first two!
google avatar

John L.

Yelp
Their latte gave me life... so delicious... highly recommend this place. The croissants were flakey and delicious as well!
google avatar

Yelp
Café de' Mercanti translates to Merchant's coffee and this charming Italian jewel definitely sports its name well. Sure you'll see local residents stumble in for their regular order, or tourists waltzing in from Montreal Old Port and Old Town but noteworthy is the number of local business people buzzing in for their morning fix and take off as quickly as they came in! This wonderful cafe is small, so perhaps a bit tough to accommodate big groups but has great atmosphere, the owners offer the best service and you'll enjoy solid espressos, lattes and many other classic Italian coffees. Noteworthy are the mouth weathering pastries which are made fresh every day - you won't regret it. Picture perfect biscotti, cornetto, cannoli, chunky double chocolate or caramel & sea salt cookies are strategically laid out to entice you. Oh oh oh and don't forget about the gorgeous vanilla custard lemon bombolini, a seasonal treat, so get' em while you can! And before you ask, there is a delicious choice or gluten free and vegan treats to choose from. Cleverly displayed are also some staple "to go" items such as tomato sauces, pasta, olive oil, balsamic vinegar, marinated olives, salts, chips, juices... all Made in Italy! Next time i'll try the panini sandwiches and gelato... hope you will too!

Yelp
This place is perfect. I'd say I'm biased because it reminds me of every cafe from my childhood but given how much everyone else loves this place I think I'm safe. As soon as we walked through the door the gentleman at the bar greeted us warmly and began cranking jokes. If the gregariousness of the staff didn't make the place, the perfectly pulled espressos and snacks brought it over the top. My boyfriend had the vegan blondie while I had a biscotti and the cannoli. I honestly don't know anywhere else in the area that pipes the cannolis to order (as it should be done) which really elevates the quality of the café for me; it was also the best part of our snack. The little shop adjacent to the cafe could honestly make a killing if they bottled the scent of the shop. I just want to eat everything there. While we didn't buy much other than a couple sodas this time I plan to return for gifts for my foodie pals- they really have everything when it comes to top-shelf Italian fare. Can't wait to be back to cafe de Mercanti!

Yelp
I would have expected this quality of cafe to be in little italy, its nice to have such a great option in the old port! Small place with a few tables. We ordered a macchiato and salted caramel cookie. Cookie was really good, a little too cakey but good and the coffee was excellent. We accidentally spilled the coffee while paying ....and the barista kindly made us another one!! Apparently they also pipe cannoli's to order, will give that a try next time!
google avatar

Adam E.

Yelp
Not that great. Nothing available on a Sunday (except good coffee) I was expecting a vast range of delicious pastries. I expected too much.
google avatar

MC C.

Yelp
Did not know this new coffee shop opened up in Dec 2015 in my area but yelp helped me discover it today. A great mix - half independent coffee shop, half italian coffee shop. Coffee was very good, loved the window view and wi-fi on top of that. Turn right as you walk in the door otherwise you're in the wrong place. Saw some people get sandwiches that looked quite good.
google avatar

George W.

Yelp
We heard from Yelp that this cafe served great cappuccinos and we were not disappointed! It may look like a small size but the quality of the espresso in it is great. The croissant is fresh. The location is in old Montreal and is close by many hotels and is along the way to the Notre Dame de Bonsecours church.
google avatar

Jean-Sebastien B.

Yelp
Great new coffee place in the heart of old montreal. Perfect coffee, great atmosphere and the staff is super attentive. Of you're around Place Jacques Cartier, walk a few steps towards the east on Notre-Dame and you'll be home!
google avatar

Mike C.

Yelp
Walked up from Old Port and found this small coffee shop, just what we needed after a long walk. Very friendly owner, stop in for a latte.

Leon B.

Yelp
This is the heat coffee shop I went before Unfortunately they were out of chocolate croissant but I am still happy with the cookie they had
google avatar

Della M.

Yelp
the man who works at this shop (i believe he is from italy, and could possibly be the owner) is definitely the nicest and funniest person i've met in montreal. i meant to come in just to eat my breakfast in silence but his energy is so great that i ended up staying for almost an hour. the food is delicious and the coffee is fantastic. thank you :)
google avatar

Kinney P.

Yelp
Such a cute little cafe with amazing beverages and pastries. I was very happy with what I ordered and all of the pastries looked like treats. Whatever you go with, I'm sure you'll love it!
google avatar

Paul M.

Yelp
Stopped by to get in out of the cold on our trek around "Old Montreal ". This has some very good coffee and pastries. The decor was very nice .
google avatar

Olivia D.

Yelp
If you're looking for a quick pick me up on your way through Old Montréal, you shouldn't stop anywhere but Café de' Mercanti! With a multitude of delicious pastries to choose from and some of the best coffee in Montreal (the mocha may have been the best mocha I've had anywhere) you will definitely find something for anyone to enjoy. Most notably, when I asked the owner for recommendations for places to go in the city he came up with a very detailed list for me and my friends and made sure we were set up for a wonderful trip! I would definitely recommend this spot to anyone visiting Montreal!
google avatar

Frances N.

Yelp
Nice traditional Italian style cafe with clean simple decor. I enjoyed a cappuccino with dashes of cinnamon and cocoa and a bombolone. I'm a huge fan of bombolone and I am pleased to say this one did not disappoint. The quantity of cream was adequate and the flavor was on point!

Angela U.

Yelp
Oh my gosh! This is hands down the best coffee shop we have ever been too. We went a few days ago, went in asking if they have flavored syrup? The owner says no! We do not! We make perfect Italian cappuccino! We order two cappuccinos, and they were the best coffee we ever had. Absolutely amazing! Turns out we've just been drinking shitty coffee for years because we need flavor added to it! The owner was so friendly and personable. We had coffee at a few other shops and it just wasn't as good as this place! We kept talking about how we needed to go back. This place is a must go, you will be delightfully pleased! To the owner: we miss you!!! We wish you could make us cappuccinos every day!

Pamela H.

Yelp
Probably one of the best espressos I've ever had. We ordered a brasilieno, a cappuccino and a pastry filled with Nutella that was crispy and delicious. Ron was incredibly attentive and crafted our drinks with much detail. This was a great coffee stop after lunch. I'd highly recommend it to anyone visiting Old Montreal and in need of a coffee fix. My boyfriend and I joked around and said this might be our regular stop if we lived in MTL haha. It's that good, and I'm a Starbucks fanatic but the brasilieno I had beats a Starbucks espresso any day.
google avatar

Yamil S.

Yelp
Cute clean and cozy. BEST Cappuccino I've had in Montreal, they even had soy milk :). Also tried their salted caramel cookie so delicious. The owner is an older gentlemen who greets you warmly amd makes sure you are enjoying your coffee.
google avatar

Remi R.

Yelp
Best cappuccino I have ever tasted. A Sunday morning with a cannoli is the best choice ever. I always go on Sunday morning to enjoy this delight. Their cappuccino is excellent. May be the best in Montreal.
google avatar

Kat C.

Yelp
Great espressos and super friendly staff! Loved it here. I didn't eat but my companion was eyefucking the pizza the entire time.

Yelp
Totally enjoyed stopping by this café for a cup of coffee and quick pastries on a cold day. Great service and attention. Amazing all around.

Vanessa V.

Yelp
fabulous coffee here. the service is impeccable and it's always a pleasure to get my latte here. support the small businesses!

Leslie C.

Yelp
I stopped in for an almond milk latte and vegan blueberry muffin, and I can only say I wish I could bring this place back with me to Toronto! The staff was exceptionally friendly and welcoming, and the coffee is second-to-none. The cafe is beautifully decorated off Notre Dame. I sat and read a book for a while I enjoyed my latte and muffin. WiFi is available, and the staff speaks both French and English. I'll be back every day I have left on my trip, and any time I'm in Montreal in the future. For the vegans: there are a number of pastry options! There are also gluten-free options for those with dietary restrictions. What a gem, this place! Latte ($4) Vegan Muffin ($3) - three flavors available
google avatar

Ilan M.

Yelp
A perfect delight. The vegan pistachio blondie was great, bright and moist; flavorful and rich espresso. And incredibly friendly service.
google avatar

Elizabeth B.

Yelp
Excellent, excellent café and pastries. Lovely service with a smile. Very authentic; wonderfully cozy. Walked here many times for my cuppa, despite several other coffee shops between it and the place I was staying. Would definitely seek it out if I'm ever in Montreal again.
google avatar

Rob B.

Yelp
Traveling out of town and saw the reviews were good. The glowing posts are true. Good coffee. Excellent pastries and sweets. The owners were very friendly and know their craft. Worth a try for local flavor.

Yelp
We walked by Mercanti on our way to another cafe and loved the look of it so much that we stopped in. I had a latte, my boyfriend had a cappuccino, and we shared a ham and cheese croissant. All three were heavenly. The staff was great and the brick walls were beautiful and welcoming. I meant to take pictures, but we ate too quickly!
