"A modest entryway opens onto a bright, colonial Mexico fantasia, complete with blue tiles, crisp white linen, colorful pottery, and would-be-viceregal artworks. Since 1912, Café de Tacuba has opened early and stayed up late to serve classic Mexican fare like enchiladas and chalupitas, excellent tamales, hearty breakfasts, a wide variety of soups, and even more-ambitious entrees, attracting an amenable congress of families, foreigners, work groups, and confidence-exchanging senoras. Order the café con leche for a smart jolt of showmanship; Spanish troubadours serenade the proceedings most nights and weekends. Maybe it’s your grandmother’s Mexico, but the old girl knew a thing or two."

A modest entrance hides a classically beautiful interior. The staff are all polite and efficient, providing excellent service throughout. The food is traditional and on the pricier side, expect to spend around 400 pesos per person. The decor features religious symbols and paintings that add to the unique atmosphere. It’s a popular spot, so it can get a bit noisy, but overall, it's a charming and enjoyable experience.

We visited Café de Tacuba for breakfast, and while the food was decent, it was really the atmosphere that made the experience memorable. The interior is stunning, full of historic charm, vibrant tiles, old paintings, and the music that gives you the feeling of stepping into another era. The service was attentive and welcoming, and everything moved at a comfortable pace, making it a pleasant spot to start the day. While the food didn’t blow us away, the overall experience definitely makes it worth a visit especially if you appreciate architecture and history with your coffee.

★★★★☆ Worth visiting for the history and architecture alone I came to Café de Tacuba for the history—and it did not disappoint. This place has been around since 1912 and is set in what used to be a colonial-era convent, and you feel that weight of time the second you walk in. The stained glass ceilings, the wall murals, the hand-painted tiles… it’s absolutely beautiful. Felt like I was eating inside a piece of Mexico City’s soul. They had a live mariachi band that added so much energy, and the bathrooms were super clean (always worth noting). I’ll be honest—I haven’t been the biggest fan of Mexican food in general on this trip, and the mole enchiladas I ordered weren’t really my thing flavor-wise, even though I know they’re a classic. But I could see someone who loves mole really enjoying it. What did hit? The fresh-squeezed orange juice—was really good. I kind of wish I’d just ordered a coffee to sit and enjoy the atmosphere more. I’d absolutely come back, even just for that. It’s the kind of place you visit not just to eat, but to feel connected to the history of the city.

🌟 Historic Charm with Warm Service What an experience! Café de Tacuba is a stunning spot — originally a 17th-century hospital, it was transformed into a restaurant in 1912 and has preserved much of its colonial beauty. The architecture is absolutely beautiful, and the 17th-century paintings throughout the space add so much character and charm. The service was excellent — fast, attentive, and very friendly. Our server made us feel truly welcome. While the food was just okay, the atmosphere more than made up for it. It’s definitely worth a visit for the history and ambiance alone. One note: the live music was delayed and mostly centered around a birthday celebration at the back, which was a bit distracting. Also, it’s a popular place, so a reservation is highly recommended. Overall, a memorable experience and a unique slice of Mexico City’s heritage!

Google
What a lovely restaurant. Fantastic service wonderful atmosphere. The mariachi performance was the cherry on top. Excellent choices and menu - will have to come back and try other items! Came back twice - for dinner and breakfast. Best service in town. No wonder Diego Rivera had his wedding reception here!!!

Google
Nice place to stop by but the food was quite average and pricey. I would recommend just getting a dessert or fruit salad and/or drink while soaking in the historic atmosphere. We ordered enchiladas with mole (not that good), pork chop (very average, a little dry), and beef tongue from the price fix menu (ok, small slivers of meat). Service was good, atmosphere nice. Would return but not for food, only for a dessert or coffee.

Café de Tacuba is a bit of a time warp—in the best way. The decor, the art, the old-school charm, and the likely appearance of a mariachi band make it feel like dinner and a show (bring small bills if you want to request a song!). The tamale Oaxaca is the standout—rich, satisfying, and full of flavor. The tasting platter of snacks is fun and worth trying. The vegetable salad? It’s not playing around. It’s a massive platter of steamed veggies—unexpected, but kind of great if that’s what you’re in the mood for. The Tacuba enchiladas are decent but didn’t blow me away. Yes, it’s a little kitschy, but that’s part of the charm. Come for the food, stay for the vibes.

Google
LOVED THIS PLACE mostly for the musical entertainment they had, specifically boleros (I think it's the romantic kind of music that's NOT mariachi). It was lowkey a little bit on the fancier end which took me off guard, but I loved it nonetheless. The woman that was serving us was so friendly and she gave me like mamacita vibes, like she knew what she was doing and was a queen while doing it. I ordered tacos de res and some horchata, which were so good!!!! A little too filling but it's okay I didn't waste anything. Honestly the most amazing part was when the boleros came up to us and started singing. One of the people in our group requested a song that meant a lot to her so it was so sweet to see her tearing up from the music! Very nostalgic.

Yelp
Great restaurant! I came here to celebrate a milestone birthday of mine and my family, who live in the area, recommended this place as they've been before. Of course a Yelp elite I had to scope out the reviews. The reviews were great and I really liked the decor inside so I made this my birthday dinner spot! We arrived around 8:30 on a Tuesday (A week away from Christmas) and it was moderately busy. We were sat right away and they even gave us an option of tables which was nice. Right when we say down they took our drink order and we were given fresh bread. I thought this was a little odd at a Mexican restaurant but hey who doesn't love bread at dinner time. We ate them up, they were good rolls! As we waited for our drinks there were Mariachis singing in the restaurant. This was nice, you can have them sing at your table, if remember correctly the first song is gratis!(free). When it was time to take our order I decided to go with something different. I ordered the Pollo en pipián Verde. It was absolutely delicious. The chicken breast was cooked to perfection and I can go as far as saying it's the best cooked chicken breast I ever had! The portion was super generous too! In addition to my main I ordered a side of guacamole and beans with chips! Both were very delicious! And for my birthday dessert I ordered the Oreo cheesecake, very good! I would definitely recommend this restaurant. I will say as my criticism is the service could use some polishing up. It was great but I dislike asking for plates to be cleared when they're just sitting there. This restaurant is a Mexico City staple, and I want the service to match the ambiance and cuisine. If the servers were a bit more attentive to clearing plates and asking if anything else is needed it would be great!

Yelp
TOURIST TRAP ALERT!!! The food we ordered was positively nasty. Chicken was hammered so hard that it had absolutely no flavor, plus the texture was disgusting. You know you're being scammed when no asks how your food is and the waiter acts like it's normal to clear plates full of uneaten food. I wouldn't eat here if it was free and it definitely isn't free. You've been warned. 2nd star for location and cool building.

Yelp
Absolutely beautiful restaurant. We just didn't love our food. They seem to be known for breakfast so we should have got breakfast. I ordered enchiladas Tacuba, which were pretty good. But my husband's chicken plate was super bland. The bread basket we had was amazing and I nearly ate the whole thing myself. Breakfast and bread here are probably the best way to go. Staff is great though and they had live music as well.

Yelp
We were seated immediately about 1:30PM. Even though it was about half full, it was still noisy but still pleasant. Two of us ordered appetizers and an entree each. We should have skipped the appetizers. They were larger than expected. I could have just had my appetizer. The red snapper fish, my entree, seemed much larger than the photos. It was huge, to be honest. Enough for 2 people. The 2nd entree, Special Tacuba Style Chicken breast could have been shared also. We both also had 1 none alcoholic drink each. Our total bill was $1,195 pesos(about $58 US dollars), not to pricey for CDMX. This place is very near a metro stop(Allende). I would come during daylight. The neighborhood is a little sketchy, lots of hawkers in area.

Yelp
Had a great brunch here with a few friends. The menu is extensive and my enchiladas were great. The hot chocolate was also very good and the table side pastries were fresh and delicious. The service was great and the interior was rather rustic. Definitely a must try if you're in the area.

Yelp
Classic experience in the heart of Mexico City. This restaurant has good, traditional Mexican food, including a fixed price lunch menu. Waitstaff wears old-fashioned uniforms. They are attentive and communicate well about the food. The ambience is added to by a ton of varied Mexican art, either portraits of Mexicans or by Mexican artists.
google avatar

Nancy M.

Yelp
Everything about this restaurant was fantastic. We loved it so much we ate here twice in one day, breakfast and dinner. The service was amazing and they were gracious to give me details about the history. It is gorgeous inside. Worth the visit!
google avatar

Dan Asher D.

Yelp
Located in the heart of Mexico, this restaurant is simply enchanting. For those seeking a taste of Mexico's classical and cultural essence, it's an absolute must-visit. As soon as you step inside, you're greeted by the melodic tunes of live classical music performed by talented bands. The servers, adorned in charming uniforms, further elevate the magical ambiance. Plus, they graciously offer complimentary bread to start your dining journey. While the food is decent, my experience may have been impacted by my selection or lack of familiarity with the menu. Despite this, the attentive and friendly service provided by the staff compensates for any shortcomings in the cuisine. However, it's worth noting that the prices lean towards the higher end. Overall, dining here is more than just a meal--it's an immersive and unforgettable experience that transports you to the cultural heart of Mexico. Despite the minor drawbacks, the enchanting atmosphere and attentive service make it a worthwhile destination for those craving a magical dining experience.

Yelp
This was a great experience. The ambience is welcoming for all. Staff are friendly and attentive. Everything we had was delicious, the various selection of breads, the pozole, the chilaquiles, the tacos and not to mention the hot chocolate and cafe de ola. This is a must try spot if visiting Mexico City.

Yelp
Ahh Café de Tacuba! Take me back! I don't have one bad thing to say about this place - 5 star comida, service, and ambiance! I had my first chiles en nogada there and would highly recommend them! The wait staff were very attentive and the ambiance was very vibrant and alive! It's not the place to go if you're sensitive to sound or looking for a place to have a more intimate conversation.
google avatar

Yelp
I got the mole with beef - I found this dish very heavy and the mole was sweet and a bit one note. I wish it came with sides that cut the richness of the mole and beef. The prices of the other dishes were a bit steep (but the size did match). I tried my friend's shrimp that the waiter recommended and found it dry and not that tasty. The hibiscus drink was also sweetened quite a bit and I would have preferred the more natural, tart flavor. As for the bill, it took half an hour for us to flag someone to get us the bill (and we had somewhere to be after) despite the restaurant not being full. I wouldn't recommend.

Carlos C.

Yelp
Ambience! Musicians! History! The food is decent. The musical group is fantastic and the staff kind and efficient.

Yelp
Authentic Mexican food, service experience. I will come here again and again for breakfast, lunch and dinner.

Yelp
Seen this place on TikTok and added it to my list for my Mexico trip. The inside is so pretty and you really get that historic ambiance with the decor and atmosphere. The our server was super nice and she constantly checked in with us. Me and my partner shared 2 tamales and the trio plate that comes with One enchiladas, one taco, rice, beans, and your choice of a single entree piece and we chose the pambaso. Everything was so good! Definitely would get 1 tamale next time because they're HUGE. And the green chicken is definitely better than the cheese and chile. Highly recommend coming here. They also go around offering sweet bread which you can pick from (not for free) but they do bring a couple regular rolls with salsa before your food comes out.
google avatar

Anna H.

Yelp
This 100+ year old building is full of charm so I'm glad I listened to my friends recommendation to eat here. The tamales indeed were delicious especially when added the green salsa. The tacuba chocolate was average and a bit too sweet for me. We shared the menu of the day: don't choose the consume, and the pollo with chayote rellano was generous in portion. The chicken was quite tender and loved that I could really taste the chicken. Did not care for the cheese and ham stuffed in the chayote. Still highly recommend dining here as the food overall was enjoyable as well as the ambience!

Iris G.

Yelp
Had the mollete con chorizo & agua de tamarindo. Both were good. It's enclosed so don't expect much natural light, but it still is nice. First floor seems to be busier, I requested the 2nd floor to not be overwhelmed with the noise and people.
google avatar

Orchid R.

Yelp
Great ambiance, historic place. Live music. Unique and authentic Mexican dishes and drinks. Our waiter, Israel was outstanding. He was constantly watching our gestures to see if we had a question or needed anything. He would come over before we could ask; I think he's psychic. He also took the time to tell us the history of the building which is hundreds of years old. The Chiles en Nogada with pomegranate seeds, nuts, cream, ground beef and more was the most unique dish I've had in a long time.

Alejandro O.

Yelp
Is a great restaurant! They have a lot of variety in breakfast. I ordered enchiladas Tacuba, which were amazing. But the problems is that most of the plates are very bland. The service is really nice, they are great and also some days they have live music.
google avatar

Lianna T.

Yelp
A festive atmosphere with stained glass windows and a very traditional feel. A mariachi band circles the restaurant and plays for any tables that desire. Traditional food that is extensive in its offerings. We split the tacos playeras, chips and guacamole and shrimp in garlic sauce. All were satisfying and hearty.
google avatar

R M.

Yelp
This is and institution. You have to go. It has been there forever. They have the best of everything. (Except their chile en nogada). The best place for that was the Hosteria de Santo Domingo, which is now permanently closed. This restaurant is the perfect example of old Mexican atmosphere, from the tiles, to the arches, to the art, the pan dulce and the cafe con leche. It is traditional, like la Casa de los Azulejos. Institutions. A must. You have not been to la CDMX if you have not been here. Mexico City is the best place to visit. It is rich in history, archaeology, architecture, museums, restaurants, bakeries, unique neighborhoods, the whole nine yards. Go!
google avatar

Jonathan N.

Yelp
What can say about this place. In historic Mexico City, this place truly embodies culture and great food. Went there a couple of times and they always delivered exceptional service. Its adorned with beautiful artwork and architecture. Great tasting food makes me want to go back. The staff is awesome, there's mariachi's playing in the background or at your table!
google avatar

Carleen C.

Yelp
Long line! 10:30 am but it is only 10 min of a weight even for one person I came around Saturday and it was so nice to be able to be with the local
google avatar

Magaly P.

Yelp
A place doesn't last over 100 years without being a great place to eat. Great service that was attentive without being overbearing. Everyone was kind and friendly. The food was delicious. The coffee was amazing and I want to return for breakfast to have the churros and chocolate. There were musicians visiting the different tables. It was so lovely. The ambience. the music, the food - all 5 stars! For vegetarians they mark menu items that can be made vegetarian.
google avatar

Suzie L.

Yelp
Iconic café with glorious interiors This is a beautiful café in a historical building. It's worth a visit just to see the gorgeous interiors and the beautifully dressed staff. It was too early for us to have dinner so we just stopped for a drink of tamarind juice and a snack of totopos (corn chips) y guacamole but the food on the other tables looked great so it's a good option for a meal too!
google avatar

Joe A.

Yelp
This restaurant is a must for anyone that wants to experience the wonderful character of central Mexico City! The food was EXCELLENT and the service was OUTSTANDING!!!
google avatar

Sean B.

Yelp
My friend really talked this place up, but today they seemed off their groove. They put cojita cheese on my (lactose intolerant) friend's beans and then took a long time to bring fresh ones, the mole came out at different times for the two of us, drinks came out late, it was just not running smoothly today. My friend even commented that one of the things he's liked about it in the past was how attentive they were, how great the service. Not so much today. Kind of three star food, three star service today. Just didn't knock it out of the park, at all, for us.
google avatar

Veronica D.

Yelp
Amazing service and their mole was delicious!! Definitely coming back to this beautiful historical place.
google avatar

Carlos R.

Yelp
Great place to eat dinner we had the tamal de mole and a torta de milanesa de pollo oh my hod great food their bread is so delicious as well. Also they have a trio from 8pm to close and it was very nice to hear them while you eat, fist song is free then the other you have to pay but it's worth it. You visiting Mexico City this is a spot to eat if you around Zocalo.

Ricardo R.

Yelp
The interior of the restaurant, i.e. the decor, is lovely. The troubadours who entertain are wonderfully talented. The food and service, however, are mediocre.
google avatar

Martha M.

Yelp
It's been about 20 years I came to café Tacuba. I had a Chile enogada and have never forgotten the incredible taste. I had to share with others in my party because it was huge and huge in flavor as well. I'll be coming down to CDMX this month and I can't wait to experience it again

Eduardo L.

Yelp
The food is great and service is on point! They had live music on Saturday night and the colors and decorations of the restaurant is amazing.
google avatar

Gina A.

Yelp
Cute historical place with good food and service. But definitely worth visiting and eating something.
google avatar

Gina G.

Yelp
We had a very nice lunch. The service is excellent and the ambiance is special. There was a group of men playing traditional music.the food was excellent, the taste, abundance, and flavors just jumped out at you. We loved our lunch, and look forward to returning.
google avatar

Jim U.

Yelp
I've been here a couple of times and always have a good meal. The waiters provide food assistance for no Spanish speakers and the menu has some English. It was busy at 4:00 on a Wednesday. Mariachi band and dancers lasted a little too long. But other than that no complaints.
google avatar

Isa L.

Yelp
Everything was good. Great service, excellent food. Family oriented. Live mariachi band.
google avatar

Ann D.

Yelp
This restaurant is beautiful. The service is great. Our server and a few other servers were always checking in with us to see if we needed anything. The food was awesome. Some things I would recommend are the camarones estilo café de Tacuba, la Margarita Jamaica de la casa, el mole, el chocolate caliente.
google avatar

Matthew J.

Yelp
Best breakfast I've had. Don't forget to try their tamales. They are out of this world. Best tamale I've had. I would travel just to be here again. True Mexican ambiance and rich traditional food. Service was very attentive. Don't forget to grab fresh pastries!!! Cafe de canela is delicious too!

Yelp
Old-timey place located on Calle Tacuba. The exterior is unassuming, but once you step inside, it's beautiful--covered with glazed ceramic tiles, paintings, and stained glass. They have an in-house mariachi band, so you will probably hear music at some point during your meal. The menu is extensive and reasonably priced. The offerings are hearty and the portions are huge--My mom had a chile relleno that was probably the size of my head. We also ordered a pork mole tamale and beef tongue with tomato Biscayne/Viscaina sauce. All were very good--I was initially hesitant about the beef tongue I'd ordered, but it was tender and not gamey at all. At this point during our trip, we were missing home-cooked Chinese meals, and the mole sauce surprisingly tasted like a soy and spice-braised pork and bamboo dish that we are pretty familiar with. It was a very pleasant surprise. Service was efficient and all of the waitstaff were kind and attentive. One thing to be wary of: The water is purified here, but we noticed sort of a strange chlorine taste that was off-putting. We ended up opting for beers, which happened to be the ideal complement to our meal.

Albert F.

Yelp
This 110 year old restaurant has a great old charm inviting ambience. The servants were friendly and food was good. The cakes look lovely too but we had to leave some room for another nice place we will visit next.
google avatar

Jason X.

Yelp
One of my favorite memories of the trip, and that's saying something! Great service, delicious food, and best of all was the vibe - it looks like an art museum inside and sounds like a block party with the mariachi band playing classics and locals singing along. The tamales were huge and pretty good. The enchiladas tacuba style were tasty and unique - no tomatoes, peppers, or beans like you'd find elsewhere, and packed with chicken. Concha not as good as some other places known for it.

Yelp
Los salones de la parte superior son hermosos , la comida muy buena. Lugar familiar y mucha tradición en CDMX

Yelp
Absolutely love this place!! Wonderful setting and decoration. Outstanding and friendly service. I wanted to try chiles en nogada. I have not tried them and they seem very popular. They were sweet to me. Mole, rice was good. The hibiscus drink with mezcal was delicious and it is a must. There was a mariachi singing on a Friday night! Neighborhood was vibrant! I can't wait to bring my significant other. Highly recommend while visiting CD MX

Yelp
Español: El edificio es precioso y la comida no es nada especial pero está decente. En verdad vale la pena visitar si estás en el área. English: The building is breathtaking and while the food is nothing special, it is decent. It's worth a visit if you're in the area!

Yelp
Old school since 1912. One night we stopped by and it was packed and I took a look at the high priced menu and left. We came back another night and it wasn't crowded, took a seat at a table, and took another look at the menu. Some food items are high but many customers where ordering the popular tamales which we ordered and they weren't expensive. The atmosphere, the service, and the food were top notch.
google avatar

Mike W.

Yelp
Perfect in every way. Stunning space, friendly efficient staff and delicious classic Mexican food. This place is a huge wow.
google avatar

Benita S.

Yelp
If you've been to Cafe Roma is Rome, you'll appreciate the eclectic decor. The waitresses dress like 1940's war nurses for some odd reason?? We had specialty coffee which was decent, and the Mexican dessert option, which tasted like canned Del Monte peaches in syrup. The other was a milk dessert which we couldn't recognize by taste, but it was interesting and pretty good. I think people mainly come for the beautiful decor.

Yelp
My wife and I dined here during one of our last nights here in México City. This restaurant si actually 112 years old and they ambiance inside si spectacular. They have some of the original stained glass in the reception area, and most of the artwork throughout the restaurant is original from the early 1900's. What a treasure! When wey arrived no Sunday, wey we're lucky that there was no wait for a table, and we were seated immediately at a table close to the front. After spending a little time checking out the menu, I decided to order pollo en mole poblano, which included a side order of refried beans. She went for the tacos playeros de pollo, which is one of their house specialties. We barely noticed the time pass by, and soon enough our orders were brought to our table. Our Server was super profesional and helpful, and always checked on our table to see if everything was ok. We had a great dining experience, and I would recommend this place to anyone.

Rafael V.

Yelp
This was the first restaurant we visited on our Mexico City trip. We were in the Zocalo and decided to walk to Cafe de Tacuba. We were seated on their second floor space right away. The restaurant was crowded. They gave us a basket of bread with butter that was delicious. I ordered the enchiladas and my wife ordered the sopes con mole. The enchiladas were very good. I had to share my meal with my wife because the sopes were probably the worst sopes we had in Mexico. I wouldn't come back to this place.

Yelp
Our tour guides from Explora Latin America took us here our first night in Mexico. Someone famous was here but I can't remember who. Staff was friendly and food was plentiful. Started with chips, guacamole, and mole. My husband and I shared a mixed grill. It had I think skirt steak, chicken and the best chorizo I've ever eaten. We fisnished with flan. Flan is everywhere in Mexico. Our hotel was walking distance.
