The Best Breakfast Restaurants in Bend, Oregon | Eater Portland

"Walking into Café des Chutes is like entering a French countryside patisserie. Surrounded by artist galleries the building was originally an ironworks built in 1917. The cafe offers a variety of sweet and savory pastries and sandwiches including bread pudding. The croissants are beautifully laminated and flaky with a variety of fillings from pistachio cream to the B.A.T. (Bacon, arugula chimichurri, and tomato jam). Baker Carrie Brown is adding new vegan and gluten-free creations to the existing options like bundt cakes and English muffins." - Barb Gonzalez

I hope you enjoy standing outside in direct sun for 30 minutes. This place was nearly empty inside when we arrived, however a line was formed and signage indicated that the only place to wait was on the sidewalk. Once inside, the service was quite slow and though they had a buzzer system, they only took one order at a time, making the next patron wait until pastries were handed out before greeting them. The wait between ordering and getting food was short, however nothing about either was particularly fantastic. Something needs to change for us to return. The fig and Brie sandwich was too sweet and drowned the cheese flavor. They followed my daughter’s drink order correctly though. The chicken focaccia sandwich had good flavor, but the general experience wasn’t good.

I love this small place with outdoor patio seats and friendly staffs. We went there on Sunday morning 8am and had to wait 30minutes, there was only 3teams ahead of us… i saw on a Reddit people said this place is the best pastries and it’s good but we are living in Orange County and I pay $5 for pastries but they are charging small bread pudding for $9. it was worth it to experience

Google
If you have limitations in your diet, this place has delicious GF and vegan deserts that are amazing! Staff was super friendly and speedy service. Adjacent to great eclectic and artistic local artisans!

Google
A contemporary American flair with roots in Europe. An excellent brunch/breakfast. Fresh baked treats, pastries, and amazing sandwiches that will fix any person's hunger. Fresh coffee and espresso drinks No frills counter service with a friendly helpful staff. Small indoor seating area with more space outside. Expect a little wait. Parking is challenging. Prices are fair. A new favorite spot because of the croissant.

Google
Little hard to find parking for us. But once you sit down behind the restaurant it’s very quaint and lovely. We sat outside and chai was delicious and Bundt cake was good for the kiddos.

Google
Fabulous food, really good coffees, friendly service, and super chill vibe. Not cheap, but worth the cost. The fig jam and Brie baguette with added ham, and the smoked trout baguette were "to die for". Highly recommend! It was a GREAT way to start our day exploring Bend.

Google
Super friendly staff, attention to detail and much care while making my beverage! I ordered a mocha and asked for matcha in it. It boosts the L-theanine if you have it with coffee or black tea. The Barista mixed it with the wooden whisk in the ceramic bowl and THEN added it to my mocha. Other places just throw the powdered tea in the cup. It made a difference, just the extra step, was greatly appreciated!! The baked goods are incredible and not overpriced, so bring your appetite!!

Google
Super cute, nice people and fun atmosphere inside and out with shops to meander through in the same parking lot. I love their gluten free and nut free blueberry buckwheat muffin, herbal teas and seasonal flavors. My husband loves their mocha and traditional sweets

Yelp
Cutest french-styled coffee shop off in an off the beaten path courtyard full of other shopping. Come early for your pick of amazing pastries as they get busy quickly! Not a lot of seating space, but the back room has a few tables that can seat 4 and other smaller tables for 2. Had the seasonal citrus-chocolate latte & it was like orange tiramisu in a cup (TO DIE FOR)! Only negative was that when theyre busy it gets very cramped but thats not on them (theyve turned from a small local shop to a place thats attracting more travelers).

Yelp
Delicious sandwiches and baked goods. Lots of nooks and crannies to sit and caffeinate.

Yelp
Wow!! I love this place. Cute interior with lots of places to sit. Friendly staff. Delicious coffee and pastries. I was able to see them running new pastries up to the front. It smelled AMAZING!! Perfect patio with lots of buzz. A few shops to walk into nearby. Lots of parking. 10/10 you MUST GO!!!

Yelp
Absolutely amazing! This small business deserves every 5 star review it gets. Friendly, knowledgeable and delicious food.

Yelp
Great find. This cafe has amazing food, great coffee and the ambience is nice. You can walk into the smaller area for a more private experience or walk into the open area for a more communal atmosphere. The people here are nice, I'm definitely recommending this place. I only came in for a cup of coffee, but the food selection captivated me, I might even take a Brie and jam baguette for the road. Mmmm good.

Yelp
Visited Bend for a mountain bike trip and found this cafe via yelp. Lots of options. Wished I could have consumed everything in the display.

Yelp
This restaurant is so cute! The sandwiches taste just like the ones in France and Switzerland. Im going to get married to these sandwiches!! Tres bien!! Love at first bite! Moi delicisiso!!

Yelp
The food is great, they have many gluten free options, including breakfast sandwiches and mini Bundt cakes. The service is nice and we sat on the patio, it is so pretty. Definitely recommend Cafe des Chutes

Yelp
Really cute coffee shop in Bend. The inside has lots of seating, great for studying. The outside is also really cute. Good spot for summer to sit outside on the courtyard. Their breakfast sandwiches and coffee are great.
google avatar

Yelp
Came in for a quick breakfast before hitting the road. The servers were nice at the counter. The ambiance was very cute. The tables on the outdoor patio were in a shaded area, which is great for summer. The pastries were a little lackluster in flavor and warmth, but anything with sugar usually tastes good. The coffee didn't quite hit the spot for me, but I tend to like mine on the sweeter side. This place is great for an esthetic breakfast, but if you're looking for something more substantial, this may not be the spot for you.

Yelp
This is such a cute new cafe! You could smell the coffee and pastries from the parking lot and I literally wanted to try one of everything. The lattes were amazing to sip on while we waited for our food on their outdoor patio. We loved our two breakfast sandwiches so much we had to get two pastries to go as well! Not sure what we liked best so going back again soon to try more deliciousness!

Yelp
Great pastries. Had the Oregon Roll (hazelnut butter and marionberry jam) and a cappucino (good). Cute space and decor... service only had threee workers and a big crowd. Good options for different food tolerances. Sandwiches- the fig and brie was delicious, the butter and ham had waaay too much ham in it. Other than that, great little find.

Yelp
The cafe's ambiance is pretty bare bones but the friendly and prompt service made me feel welcome. You order at the counter and they bring your food to you on real glassware! Amusingly, there's a sign in the tiny restroom that reminds patrons that the building is over a hundred years old, with equally delicate centenarian plumbing. I tried the following things over the course of two consecutive days: smoked trout baguette (sophisticated and satisfying), pistachio croissant (crisply, flaky, and a lovely filling in a truly-French style), pain-au-chocolat (classic if a little breadlike), and Oregon Roll (essentially a peanut-butter & jam offering). The first two were sufficiently good to warrant a return visit. Authentic French pastries are rare-enough in Bend that I'll be back to see what other flaky pastries they come up with!

Yelp
$12 for microwaved sandwiches! The coffee and atmosphere used to be good but it's taken a turn for worse this summer. My cappuccino was the worst one I ever had and the workers either seem like they hate their job or they're super fake not personable at all and the music is so bland just go to Starbucks if that's what you're looking for. There's better coffee down the street at palette or better coffee and food just at Jackson's Corner. It's a bummer because they used to be really good!

Yelp
Great place to have breakfast in Bend. Friendly staff provided a very welcoming service. Loved the sandwich and vanilla latte.

Denise L.

Yelp
This is the cutest coffee shop in Bend. Stumbled upon it looking for the previous Sparrow Bakery location and it did not disappoint. Such a cute vibe, the coffee and pastries are also 10/10.

Yelp
Food is always really good. But the service this time was awful. You could hear the lady in the back being rude to the staff and then coffee barista someone found a car key that nobody claimed for over 15minutes and was trying to make sure no one stole it and walked to the barista she told her about the key and then the lady was like "set it down on the counter " in a super snarky tone and then she set it down and the lady grabbed it didn't say anything and slammed it next to her. The poor girl taking orders was trying really hard and everyone around her was ina crappy mood. It was really unfortunate.

Pattie E.

Yelp
Great coffee and pastries and the staff was super friendly. We stop here while on a rest stop on the way back to Idaho and it's always a favorite!

Yelp
Lovely European-inspired coffee shop with excellent pastries, coffee, & tea and friendly staff.

Yelp
This place is pure perfection. Gluten free sandwiches and sweets are offered and they are scrumptious. The person with the origami crab tattoo along with her sidekick were so warm and welcoming from the get go. The cafe is beautifully cozy and the outdoor area is spacious, peaceful and relaxing. This is now my happy place in Bend. We'll be back soon. Maybe tomorrow.

Yelp
Such a treat! We missed out on the Cinnamon Rolls! But the Sandwiches & desserts were delicious!

Eric G.

Yelp
Super duper cute, stellar pastries, and amazing coffee. Lemond poppy seed cake and pistachio croissant I highly recommend

Jon W.

Yelp
Delightful space. Their coffee is also wonderful. Their baked goods and sandwiches are also outstanding. You MUST try the BAT. Their employees are quick and very kind.

Yelp
This place took over in the old location of Sparrow. We decided to do some work and have coffee. Wound up eating some breakfast - and it was very tasty. Wish they were open every day of the week!!
google avatar

Dawn B.

Yelp
Vegan selection is limited to only the mini Bundt cakes, which was a disappointment since reviews suggested they have an assortment of vegan pastries. They had veggie breakfast sandwiches, but with cheese and egg. Coffee was ok. Staff was a bit aloof and not very helpful and felt like I was annoying them with my questions.

Yelp
First time visiting Bend from CA & on our last day, went here before heading home. An un-pretentious coffee shop in this cutest building. Staff was nice & their pistachio croissant & honey latte were perfect.

Daniel M.

Yelp
Very long wait, pretty mid coffee and it cost 50 dollars with tip for 2 coffees and 2 sandwiches

Wanda V.

Yelp
Discovered this little gem using the map search for a coffee shop before hitting the road! Beautiful coffee and they were happy to fill my travel mug for me. The breakfast sandwich was tasty and toasty. And wrapped nicely so I could eat it in the car without making a mess, which is critical on a road trip! Friendly service and atmosphere! The garden patio space was hidden from the street and I wish I'd allowed myself time to stop and enjoy it for a little longer. Bring a book to read or a friend to share the space with while you visit!
google avatar

Yelp
Fantasic pastries, coffee and atmosphere. Highly recommended to both locals and tourists!

Yelp
I have visitEd the cafe several times this week and each visit made me more appreciative of their offerings and quality of help. They took over from sparrow and are able to offer fresh Ocean Rolls in addition to their own creations. Have tried several of fresh baked goods and found each one uniquely flavored with perfectly selected combination of ingredients. In addition they offer a great variety of gluten free options that raise the bar on quality, taste and texture Add to the great bakery option I love their chai which starts out as a powder and delicately mixed with milk of choice. Plus full option of other drinks. Always found the staff and owner to friendly and make sure the guests feel welcomed
google avatar

Jennifer B.

Yelp
Very disappointed they told us today they no longer carry ocean rolls. We miss Sparrow!

Yelp
Lovely spot. Great coffee and good food selection. Friendly staff and pleasant patio.

Yelp
Love Jonathan the handsome sweet pink cheeks barista. .. Love the funky old building with cool vintage green, pink & blue ceramic cups.. Love Emily handling the front counter.. As I stood I line I couldn't stop my mouth from watering over the Pistachio & Ham/Asiago Cheese Croissants -- Then as I moved up the line my choices disappeared.. "Surely they have more in the back.."..I thought.. WRONG!!! ... *Note.. GET there early!!! So Emily talked me into their Bacon, Egg & Cheese croissant.. I was apprehensive and ordered it... BLEW ME AWAY.. No phyllo dough here Folks... THAT Bacon, Egg and Cheese literally MELTED-In-My-Mouth!!!!! Loved it so much.. Im stopping there on my way back to Laguna.. ONLY -- THIS TIME ILL BE THERE BY 9;-)

Yelp
Off the beaten path in the Old Ironworks Art District, this little gem definitely worth the trip for light fare, pastry, delicious coffee and cocktails. it has indoor and outdoor seating with a shaded patio and is situated near several of Bend's notable artist stores. The cafe's sandwiches and pastry recipes are unique and beautifully balanced with a gorgeous array of local sourced ingredients when available and carefully considered flavor profiles that are anything but pedestrian. The pistachio croissant is phenomenal, filled with apricot jam and orange cream- this recipe is a gem. Recently the cafe 's Oregon roll, made with Oregon local ingredients marionberry preserves and hazelnut glaze, has shot up the charts in popularity and is the perfect pairing for your latte. The gluten-free and vegan options are standouts and don't play second fiddle to the balance of the menu. The building itself is historical, the interior includes café seating in a rustic French style with single seats near the windows and some bench seating in the back. The service is great and makes it clear that care and pride us put into what they are serving.

Yelp
Cute French bistro vibes. My coffee was good and I was excited to see all the GF options. I went with the GF ham and egg breakfast sandwich and it was delicious!! The only downside was service was slow and the staff wasn't very friendly. Maybe they were stressed out, but overall a nice atmosphere when you have some time to sit and aren't in a rush.
google avatar

Betsy T.

Yelp
A beautiful space with a varied and delightful selection of baked goods, sandwiches and coffee options. The service was superb - down to earth and thoughtful. I think I just found my new favorite bakery.
google avatar

Clarity B.

Yelp
This place is going to blow up soon, the food is just too good. Whoever is doing the baking and cooking is exceptional, and I'm the daughter of a baker and cafe owner. Every layer of my breakfast sandwich was perfect, and the brownie is one of the best I've ever had. I live in Los Angeles and so sadly I won't get to eat here often, but if you are in Bend you have to give it a try! *Chai was too sweet for my taste, although it was made with coconut sugar which is great.

Jay R.

Yelp
Excellent t cappuccino and cortado - food offerings were inventive, distinctive and delicious - nice courtyard space behind the restaurant - sort of odd location, but it works

P. J.

Yelp
Great coffee and great pastries. They have plenty of room for patrons to sit there and enjoy both. I love the ambiance. It is Bend as it was 70 years ago.

Ruby S.

Yelp
Very nice pistachio croissant, acceptable bread pudding. Lovely atmosphere. Service was poor. No greeting upon entering despite not being busy. The person who took our order was reasonably pleasant, but the other staff were downright unfriendly when we asked a question about how we would know when our food was ready, and our thank you upon leaving was nearly completely ignored.

Jennifer M.

Yelp
Yum! Great coffee, bakery items and employees They have a lot of indoor as well as outdoor seating.

Kathryn H.

Yelp
One of the only truly charming places in an otherwise, urbanized Bend. Love how they remodeled the small space from the prior Sparrow ownership. You won't be disappointed by atmosphere, friendly staff, or quality fare. GF options are SO appreciated! My only issue, and this is minor, wish the pastry case was full of displayed goodies. Where's the cakes and pies? Was there around lunch time, mid-week, and the case seemed very empty. Maybe they need to ramp up business before over-baking? Seems like this would help attract customers though. I expect bakeries to have full cases, where I get my ideas for event fare, etc. Looking forward to more visits.

Stacey S.

Yelp
Nice little place excellent pastries, quality coffee. One draw back baguette sandwich had too much butter (well maybe it was a French amount of butter. ;)

Jean V.

Yelp
Best pain au chocolat I've had outside of France- and it was warm! I was only visiting, but made a point to come here several times. The sandwich au jambon with lots of yummy butter took me right back to Paris. Merci!

Brittany L.

Yelp
Amazing coffee and pastries. Chocolate peanut butter banana treat = and it's paleo just sweetened with maple syrup. Lovely staff and outdoor area

Jacques O.

Yelp
The baked goods were delicious. Had a pistachio croissant that was excellent. Crisp and flakey with a very flavorful filling. The plain and chocolate were also wonderful. Beware the flock of sparrows begging for crumbs. Don't leave food unattended, but do visit this gem.

J B.

Yelp
This place somehow fell off of Yelp. Great friendly French inspired bakery and coffee shop. They have sweet and savory food.

Samuel James L.

Yelp
Awesome place to grab coffee and great atmosphere to hang out in for a few hours. Very kind people!
