The Best Cafes in Montreal | Eater Montreal

"This new environmentally conscious, vegetarian café is minimalist in design and dedicated to slow living. Café des Habitudes spans two large rooms — one with space to relax, read, or climb into a cozy second-floor corner, and the other having a few tables, a bar, and a place for kids to play." - Daniel Bromberg

Café des Habitudes is a super cute and cozy café located just north of Mile Ex and Little Italy Neighborhoods. I first discovered it while searching for caneles, since many reviews praised them as some of the best in Montreal. Ordering online was easy — you can select your pickup date and time — and that’s how my partner and I ended up here. The space itself is inviting and warm. There are plenty of couches, tables, and cozy seating nooks, plus a fun loft/bunk bed setup with cushions where you can climb up, relax, and read or work. There’s also a side door that opens onto a small patio with a few outdoor tables, perfect for letting in the breeze on a nice day. We picked up our caneles, which came in flavors like chocolate peanut butter, pistachio, and raspberry. Each was fresh, rich, and delicious — worth the hype. Service was equally warm and friendly, and the staff spoke English as well, which made ordering easy. In addition to pastries, the café serves coffee and tea, making it a great spot to study, work, or simply unwind with a good book. For cozy vibes, friendly service, and excellent canele, Café des Habitudes is absolutely worth a visit.

Such a vibe cafe. Lots of spaces and seating styles. They have a small patio, indoor floor pads, sofa, tables, a variety. They also host events like open mic and painting sessions here. I ordered a latte and it was super bitter. I do not like the vegetable milk base they use, it is terrible and needs to be replaced, but service was friendly and nice. Wifi and working or social spot!

Stopped by a few week ago and grabbed a few things: iced matcha (with almond or oat milk?), 2 types of cookies, and the breakfast (toast) plate. The iced matcha was pretty weak and didn't taste like anything, but the cookies (matcha and chocolate chip) were great. The cafe is full of random floor cushions , chairs and couches which immediately makes me think of germs however it's very spacious and also has outdoor seating. The breakfast plate comes with a salad and a glass of orange juice which were both okay but the lightly battered mushrooms on toast with potato wedges (and sauce) were delicious. You have to order at the cash and and let the waiter know where you're sitting. The main "toast" dish took over 25 minutes to come but it was also the weekend. The waiter actually brought us 2 breakfast plates so initially I believed she separated the dish in 2 because we were two people but she came back 3 or 4 minutes later and asked for one of the plates back which was odd because she didn't even ask if we touched the food. I told her that I'd pay and she said okay. I was satisfied with most of the food apart from the matcha. And I really think the breakfast plate should come with more food for the price you pay. Overall it was a decent experience despite the hiccups.

This is the cutest most unique cafe I’ve ever been to. Its eclectic vibe is infectiously inviting and the decor is so easy to fall in love with. I can’t think of a better place to hang out or do your work in than in this cafe. It’s unbelievable how no one has thought of this idea before but these people are geniuses!!

Truly the best cafe I have ever been to. We happened to be staying in an airbnb down the block, so dipped in for a coffee—we were not disappointed! The aesthetic is stunning; I made my partner take a lot of pictures so I could try to emulate this breezy, bohemian style at home. The team members were so kind and warm, forgiving our extremely limited French. The brunch was exquisite (toast with beetroots!) and the hojicha tea latte was so good I bought a little case of hojicha powder to take home. You can just tell this place is built on love; that the founder is kind to people, and genuinely committed to doing good in this community. Even the books they have and the gorgeous pieces for sale from local artisans speak to a safe and cozy sanctuary in this wild and stormy world. I want to move to Montreal just so I can while away the hours at the Café des Habitudes!

A must visit if you're in town. It's a beautiful cafe, with lots of cozy seating options, and the vibe is unparalleled, you instantly feel welcomed, at home, and cozy. Their menu is varied, I got a hojicha cocoa and hazelnut cookie and they were absolutely delish. They also have events, merch, books, toys, you can really feel the love for the community as soon as you step in. It's my new favorite coffee shop 🤍

We tried a Hojicha & cacao, a Hojicha Earl gray and a canulle. The decorations are cute and cozy, but not enough clean. Many food scraps were on the sofa. They have only oat milk and almond milk, but not whole milk.
