2 Days in Helsinki

"If you find yourself in need of refreshment as you head east along Aleksanterinkatu, Café Engel is the ideal place to pause. An ornate, cosy spot, the café occupies an old stone building dating from 1765 on the site of a former pipe factory. Their coffee and cakes are just as indulgent as the décor." - The MICHELIN Guide Nordic Editorial Team

Highly recommended if you’re in Helsinki. Don’t miss meatball dish, it’s just yummy. Drinks were nice and you can slowly enjoy the food with the view outside the window. The food served quick.

Lovely, fresh and delicious food. We came here for some lunch after exploring Helsinki in the rain. Cosy and warm atmosphere and the staff were very friendly. Would definitely recommend.

Food was great. We got the blueberry desserts. Can't the names but those were really good! Price-wise, it was okay but this is the first cafe we tried in Helsinki so I have no reference to compare it with.

Our first stop after arriving in Helsinki, Café Engel was the perfect place for a tired traveler. The ambiance is calm, airy, and welcoming, making it easy to relax after a journey. We tried the salmon soup, which was warming and flavorful, the meatballs with mashed potatoes, hearty and comforting, and a side of fresh berries, which added a nice light touch. Everything was fresh and satisfying, and the atmosphere made it a great way to kick off our time in the city. Ideal for breakfast, lunch, or just a restorative break after travel.

If you come to Helsinki and have no idea where to go, then I would happily suggest Café Engel ! Close to the Cathedral, it's a lovely little place, with delicious food - and I have gone multiple times with friends. I would also heartily recommend their salmon soup, my personal fave !

Google
We visited Café Engel during a weekday lunch. Although the restaurant was quite busy, we managed to find seats without much difficulty. Orders were placed through the waitress, and I chose the meatballs. The food was served promptly, and the meatballs were decent. However, I wished there had been more sauce to accompany the mashed potatoes for a more satisfying balance of flavours.

I had reindeer meat and mashed potatoes with sparkling water. It was fresh but for first try it has different taste especially red berries. As a desert I had blueberry cake it was so delicious.

Google
Lives up to the hype! Warm and attentive service, delicious food and a wonderful view of Senate Square - what more could you want! We came here twice during our short time in Helsinki.

Yelp
Cafe Engel, located right in Senate Square, is definitely overpriced due to its prime location. I was hoping to start the day with a nice latte and breakfast, but after seeing the inflated prices, lackluster menu, and sad, dry-looking croissants around me, I opted for a cafe au lait instead. I would suggest elsewhere.

Yelp
Date of visit: 9/4/2024 As much as I want to love this cafe, I find it really hard to do so while swallowing my overly salted reindeer stew. Came here to see what the hype is all about and ordered what were highly recommended by other yelpers: the reindeer stew and Blueberry mascarpone pie. The Blueberry mascarpone pie is definitely a YES for me. I was debating between this and the lingonberry cake and was told that the blueberry mascarpone pie is more Finnish and most popular. Hence the choice! The reindeer stew on the other hand, is definitely not for me! The mashed potatoes is lumpy and the stew is way too salty, even when it's consumed with the mashed potatoes. On the positive side however, I rate this dish better than the one I had at the higher end restaurant with the price tag doubled than this one. The meat smell is less prominent and it is more tender. As today is my last day in Helsinki, today will also be my last day of consuming reindeer. I really don't like it so I don't think I will ever eat reindeer again in my life...well, at least until one day I go to Lapland to see Northern Lights *crossfingers* For now, this is it with Reindeer! PS Bought lingonberry cake to-go to try. Not bad, but def Blueberry Mascarpone pie hands down!

Yelp
A must if you are in Helsinki! Wonderful breakfast choices, mind you they are European style, but they have a bacon egg for you Americans. But please venture out! The place is very quaint I recommend getting there when it opens. It is order out the counter and then you sit down. They can accommodate parties of 6 or fewer easily. I recommend contacting them if larger. But, please, this is a gem with excellent food, both savory and sweet, with excellent coffee and tea choices.

Yelp
What's visiting Finland without trying the reindeer stew! Simply delicious! The lingonberries (I might be wrong) are the cherry on top, the tartness balances the stew so well! Nice location right in the city center where you can view the senate square, cozy spot and super friendly staff!

Yelp
Try the blueberry pie, it's amazing I've been there for the breakfast and just in case book the table before hand.

Yelp
Came for breakfast after a long intercontinental flight. Was not disappointed. Great location and ambiance with delicious breakfast cake and pastry selections . The scrambled eggs were a little runny. But other than that, enjoyed the meal and friendly, quick service

Yelp
Great cafe. My wife and I had breakfast here on a chilly, wet morning. Very nice. We both had the bacon and eggs breakfast. Everything was fresh and delicious. Great coffee too. We will stop in again on our trip out.

Yelp
A really nice, decently priced cafe with a large selection of cakes. Serves delicious breakfast and classic Finnish lunches. Very well located right in the centre of Helsinki, right next to Helsinki Cathedral. Indoor and outdoor seating during the Summer.

Yelp
My wife and I had lunch there. She had a decent cold green salad with a piece of (cold) cooked salmon on top. I had the "feta and spinach pie" with a green salad. The pie is in fact a tart made with filo dough. So be warned: far from a pie. But it was also OK. This was 2.5 stars but I gave them an extra notch for the great apple tart at the end. It was a crumbly buttery dough, filled with apple and sugar turned into a caramely compote. On the sweet side, but delicious. You can also give the "house tea" a try: it's flavored with vanilla and red berries (as far as I could tell). Reminded me of "Christmas tea". They benefit from a great location, with a lovely view of the Helsinki Cathedral; and reasonable prices (in a city of outrageous food prices).

Yelp
My husband and I enjoyed The Café Engel´s Breakfast which consist of: Fair trade coffee/tea, orange juice, bread roll, butter, cheese, ham, brie, boiled egg and fresh fruit for 14.50 € at the time of this writing. Nothing was left on either of our plates- it was all very good. Our friend had The Bacon and Eggs Breakfast Fair trade coffee/tea, orange juice, scrambled eggs, bacon, toast, butter, jam and fresh fruit for14.50 € , and again all of it was gladly eaten. Nice ambiance and good service made this a very likeable café.

Yelp
Like with some of the more well known cafes in prominent locations in Helsinki, it's more about the location than the food or drinks. The coffee was fine, the pastries were "so so," but if you sit outside you get a great view of Senate Square.

Yelp
Prime location - good pie and amazing hot chocolate at reasonable prices! I do not speak Finnish but the girls working were very accommodating. I ordered a slice of the blueberry pie and a hot chocolate (see photos). The pie was decent - a 6/10 and the hot chocolate was amazing - a 10/10! I would definitely come back here. The restrooms were also clean. Highly recommend Cafe Engel.

Yelp
Delicious breakfast, comfortable environment, lots of seats. I had the musli item which had lots of fruit, rye bread, yogurt and grains. Coffee and apple juice made it a complete breakfast. Central location. A choice you won't regret.

Yelp
I was disappointed there wasn't reindeer on the lunch special, but settled on the smoked salmon salad instead. It was quite tasty and surprisingly filling! Friendly, nice atmosphere - would recommend.

Yelp
Very traditional tiny restaurant. We had the day special, which was reindeer with mashed potatoes. Very good, warming and wholesome food. The place was packed for lunch, so it must be popular with locals too. Only one small remark. If you're looking for a hip, modern Scandinavian hangout you're not in the right place. Didn't seem to me as the kind of place that lets you hangout after dinner for long either.

Yelp
Lovely and special. This little cafe on the cathedral square is pleasant and welcoming. I went on a weekend, when it was crowded, but everything was easy and relaxed. I took a slice of cheesecake and tea. They were delicious.

Yelp
Relaxing atmosphere with the cafe overlooking the Senate square. Good menu options with English translations. Delicious foods and friendly staff. Reasonably priced.

Yelp
Classic breakfast, bad coffee. I ordered the breakfast plate with scrambled eggs, bacon, toast and fruit. The food was nice, and they offered gluten free toast, which was actually quite good. Gluten free bread is often dry, but this was not. The juice was fresh, although a little small. The coffee was absolutely terrible. I also ordered a small macaron with the coffee, which was undercooked. However, they were aware and offered me two for the price of one even before I saw it. The view from the window of the cathedral is nice and good for people spotting.

Yelp
My friends and I only had a few hours to spend in Helsinki and wanted to have a nice meal (in the warmth!!) before exploring the city for a little. I am not the biggest fan of the cold, so Cafe Engel turned out to be my favorite part of my very short visit to Helsinki ;) I ordered the Beetroot Burger, and it was incredible!! Beautiful, colorful, and delicious! Cafe Engel is an adorably classy cafe with great service and amazing food. It is pricey, but if you are looking for a nice cafe to grab lunch in Helsinki and willing to spend some euros, this is the place to go. Definitely recommend!!

Yelp
The location is excellent, the food is good and the service is great. We had breakfast here; we ordered eggs, fruit and pastries. We enjoyed it a lot. The waitresses were very nice and patient. After breakfast i bought a chocolate cake and it was fantastic. I highly recommend this spot for breakfast or brunch when you are in Helsinky.

Yelp
Great cappuccino and the blueberry mascarpone was incredible. Add to that a great view of the cathedral. Will definitely be back here while in town
