The 12 Best Lobster Dishes at Houston Restaurants | Eater Houston

"Café Ginger offers all of the Chinese food comfort plates one could hope for — from wonton soup and Hunan chicken to moo shu duck —but doesn’t shy away from taking signature plates to the next level, as in the succulent lobster stir-fry. A splurge at $38, the dish boasts 1 ½ pounds of chunky lobster pieces tossed with asparagus, celery and fresh ginger in a white wine sauce." - Megha McSwain

The food here is amazing. It's my first time here and the experience was great. I definitely loved the decorations at this establishment. The service was also great. I went during lunch time and enjoyed their lunch menu. I ordered the eggplant chicken and my taste buds were like " there will be no leftovers 🤤😋" Definitely coming back to try their other menu items.

Google
This food is so delicious. We had the mini Texas rolls for appetizers. Yum. I had the seafood fried rice and I was impressed in 2 ways. #1 the rice was not greasy or heavy at all. Light and flavorful. #2 the portion was big enough for me to get 2 meals and a snack out of. Flavor was there, value was there, and the service was top notch. They had piano music playing which created this very upscale, classy atmosphere which my partner and I loved.

Google
I love this place. Great atmosphere, the service is terrific. Just dont come in and expect authentic Chinese food. This is Americanized Chinese food, but really good Americanized Chinese food at that! And really generous portions for the price. The shrimp with walnuts, in particular, are fantastic.

Securing a table was effortless, and the restaurant’s stylish interior immediately impressed. The service was exceptional—attentive without being intrusive. My drink was consistently refilled, and empty plates were promptly cleared, keeping the table tidy. Best of all, the food was fresh, flavorful, and absolutely delicious.

Google
Finally a chinese japanese spot i can return to over and over! I thoroughly enjoyed the lo mein and wonton soup. It was fresh and just delicious. I am planning my return to try the sushi varieties. The staff is just so flipping great, very attentive, and have great recommendations. The restaurant surprised me when I walked in it looked small feom the outside but expanded when I walked in. I met a long time patron and was ensured all the dishes are all pretty great.

Google
Great food. Flavors are spot on. I ordered it super spicy and it was perfect for me (barely broke a sweat). The picture is the peppered beef and I would order it again and again. Great portion! You certainly get your moneys worth! Loved it. Great location and food in the city.

If you're searching for an upscale Chinese American dining experience that seamlessly blends tradition with elegance, look no further than Café Ginger. From the moment you walk through the doors, you're greeted with an atmosphere of refined sophistication — rich wood accents, ambient lighting, and a level of service that is attentive without being overbearing. The crown jewel of the menu is, without question, the Peking Duck. Expertly prepared with crispy, lacquered skin and tender, flavorful meat, it’s presented with all the classic accompaniments: paper-thin pancakes, fresh scallions, cucumber, and hoisin sauce that elevates every bite. It’s not just a dish — it’s a ceremony, and one that Café Ginger executes flawlessly. Equally impressive are the prawns, which speak to the restaurant’s commitment to quality. These are not your average shellfish — they’re plump, sweet, and impeccably fresh, served in dishes that range from umami-full salt and pepper-style preparations to delicately sautéed versions with garlic. No matter how you order them, the prawns at Café Ginger are a standout. Whether you're celebrating a special occasion or simply indulging in an unforgettable night out, Café Ginger delivers on every front — exquisite food, stylish ambiance, and a menu that honors both Chinese culinary heritage and modern American tastes. This is fine dining with soul.

Google
One of the best Chinese restaurants I've ever been too. I highly recommend the chicken with egg plant (not pictured). It's one of the best dishes I've had and I'm not a big egg plant fan normally. The Orange beef was really good but I recommend it as a family style dish. The spicy dumplings and noodles were both good appetizers. The art work and design for this restaurant are incredible. One of the best designed interiors I have even seen. The service was very good and professional. I definitely will be back.

Yelp
Cafe Ginger is so solid I wish it was closer to my house I would prob be there every other week. Had Spicy Shrimp with Eggplant, a red dragon roll, and wife had sesame chicken. Everything was delicious and service excellent. They also have really nice specialty cocktails. I have come for lunch and dinner a dozen times over the years and always leave full and happy. Also the place has great ambiance and feel. Don't let the strip mall fool you. Inside you will sit a table with white table cloths, beautiful sculptures and art all over the wall's. They have a bar and sushi bar area also.
google avatar

Yelp
Very good neighborhood spot. Probably the best American chinese food in the area. Also have very solid sushi and other Japanese plates but I mainly go for Chinese portion of the menu. The appetizers all standout the most to me as being top-tier. The entrees have never disappointed me either, all of the beef and chicken options are 5/5. The service is also S-tier. However the lo-mein could use some more noodles and a little less other items in the dish, but other than that I would give this spot 4.5/5 if yelp would allow for that

Yelp
Meal has about half the meat, but comes with side and soup. 2.0 - Chicken, General Tso 3.0 - Chicken, Kung Pao. No onion, no garlic, no green onion. 2.8 - Rice, brown. 3.0 - Rice, fried. No onion. 3.5 - Soup, Wonton. 4.0 - Spring Roll.

Yelp
First time coming here with a group of coworkers and was very impressed with the decor! So beautiful. We were seated in the back room promptly as we had a reservation. The service was notably great. On top of that I felt like the lunch general tso's portion was large and the chicken was hearty. Some general tso's is mostly breading and I didn't feel this way about this dish here. Dumplings were really good! They had a chili sauce that was so good I wanted to take a big batch of it home. I would absolutely come back!

Yelp
Really nice atmosphere and great food. I usually stick to the sushi, and it never fails to satisfy me- always fresh and beautifully presented. My friends had the lo mein and loved it as well. The martinis are definitely worth recommending. Perfect spot for a great night out.

Yelp
Food is fresh and authentic, pretty decors and lighting is perfect, service is second to none, waiter is very attentive to all details. One of the best Chinese cuisine in town with wide selection of menu and affordable price.

Yelp
Okay place for Sunday night dinner with the family. Make sure to confirm any food restrictions repeatedly. We repeated them more than a couple of times. The hot and sour soup is good. The crispy eggplant with chicken is a bit unusual. The crispy eggplant is topped with minced chicken and minced veggies. By the time it gets to you, guess what? The eggplant is not crispy. Ordered moo shu chicken with extra pancakes. Confirmed no pork and no shellfish several times. When they brought the moo shu, we confirmed that it was moo shu chicken. After my husband took a few bites, guess what? Our server came over and apologized that they accidentally made moo shu pork. Nooooo!! Learned our lesson. If we go back with family, no more moo shu chicken, which is one of our favorites.

Yelp
I cannot believe, I just started hearing about this place within the last six months! I have shopped next door at the TJ Maxx often and never thought of coming here. This is my regular place to meet up with friends now! I love the service is great here as they seat you right away. They have a cocktail bar and sushi bar. The parking is ok, as they are located in a shopping centre. I love the Lychee Martini, I'm telling you, one glass can get you lit! They have lunch specials weekly and a great variety of options. The appetizer menu is so good and we mostly order from there as the portions are almost like an entree. The ambiance is nice, with white table cloths. I recommend making a reservation if you want booth seating. I really enjoy the drinks and food here!

Mike T.

Yelp
My favorite Chinese place/ especially the beef and hot peppers and hot and sour soup - crowded but good service

Yelp
Oh my, I found another gem! Cafe Ginger is the real deal on every level! Such a beautiful restaurant. I sat at the bar and immediately had people around me bringing menu, silverware, sauces etc. excellent service from host stand to bartender to servers...all top notch. One thing I loved was the menu. Many Chinese dishes I've never seen at any other restaurant. Yes some of the standards were there but I was excited to go on a new Chinese culinary journey! I ordered the Beijing shredded pork. You have a choice of soup and side. Hot and sour and spring roll for me...both excellent as was the Beijing pork. While waiting for my meal I observed how the ultra professional staff went about taking care of the other guest. Wow...that's how it's done and one would expect a restaurant of this caliber to be expensive but it was very reasonable for what they provided. I can't wait to go back for another 5 Star culinary journey! GREAT JOB!

Yelp
Nice fancy and classic American Chinese that also can making authentic flavor dishes and you want sushi, they have that here also. The service is really good and they do not judge the customers base here. I bright a friend of mine who is homeless to have a nice meal for lunch every now and then and the clothe we wear are like t-shirts and shorts. And since I have come a few times and they know I can speak Mandarin Chinese, they will greet me in Chinese when we walk in. The lunch special is pretty good for the amount of food for the price especially in this area.

Yelp
I didn't get to post all of my food but I can say the food was delicious, and freshly made. We got a variety of items from the menu to share amongst our table: general tsu chicken, dumplings, spicy edamame & sushi! The atmosphere is very charming to the cuisine, and the service was great. I will be returning with family next time! Also, The lychee martini paired nicely with the food, definitely recommend going if you want a cozy meal.

Yelp
This is my favorite Chinese restaurant in Houston! The dining room is beautiful with amazing decoration from China. The egg drop soup is perfect consistency and flavored so perfectly that you don't even need to add soy sauce! Great lunch specials til 4pm. The beef and broccoli is my favorite and it's such a large portion. The best part is that they are fusion, with a sushi bar! The rolls are big and so delicious! Just talking about it makes me want to go there for dinner tonight lol. I eat there several times a month and sometimes when I just order take-out directly from their website, the food comes in a reusable insulated bag to keep it hot and fresh. I love Cafe Ginger!

Yelp
We have been getting takeout from Cafe Ginger, minimum once a week, for YEARS now. So much so that this is our idea of comfort food in my household- it always hits the spot. Our most frequently ordered items are the crab puffs, the minced chicken lettuce wraps, the kung pao chicken, the sesame chicken, the orange beef, and the special fried rice. I highly recommend all these items. All dinner entrees come with your choice of white, brown or fried rice, egg drop or hot & sour soup, and 2 crab puffs or one spring roll. Their portions are so generous that we always get at least two meals out of each entree. Also, you can ask them to make your dish more or less spicy. I always let them know that I cannot eat spicy food at all, so they skip the Szechuan peppers in my entree. In the rare occasion that we decide to dine in, service has been top notch and servers have always been very attentive. They have never let our glasses (or plates) go empty. The atmosphere is classy and the decor is beautiful. Parking is plentiful too. We'll be back soon!

Yelp
Nice atmosphere and service was wonderful but food was mediocre & drinks subpar. I had the lychee martini and it didn't have much flavor. The garlic chicken wasn't spicy at all but I did enjoy all the vegetables in it. I heard good things about the chicken lo mein
google avatar

Yelp
When I lived on this side of town I came in all the time. Portions are really good and I love their egg Rand wonton soup. I have to get it to go so I can get home to put my drops in. Good food all the time. Ten stars.

Yelp
Cafe Ginger is a Houston staple in the River Oaks area serving great Chines and Americanized Chinese food. One great thing is their seven day a week lunch specials served from 11am till 4pm, for me the Beef and Snow Peas and The Hunan Shrimp are my lunch regulars. The staff is amazing, always remembering their regular diners and what they like all in a beautiful atmosphere with new tables and chairs and a Giant Buddha looking over the diners. Unfortunately no pics this trip but you can't go wrong for a great chinese experience.

Yelp
I came to this place for a birthday and had an okay time. The services was great. Our waiters consistently checked on us and made sure that all of our needs were met. However the food was just okay to me. I've had better Asian food. I had the Garden Salad which had a ginger dressing. The salad just lacked toppings, I wish there was more than what was in my plate. I also had the Shrimp Lo Mein. The shrimp were delicious and seasoned perfectly however the noodles were just bland to me. But overall it was a decent establishment. Not sure if I would return though.

Yelp
Seemingly upscale Chinese restaurant that tailors to Americans. I don't have a problem with Chinese fine dining, but the place has a notable old wood smell and interior that needs updating, which takes away from the "upscale" atmosphere it tries to present. Overall we enjoyed the dishes, but as someone who grew up eating Asian food in non-fussy settings, the lack of chopsticks, the high prices for basic dishes, and sushi on a Chinese menu were all a bit shocking. The only memorable thing I ate was the peking duck, and despite it coming in a burrito size, was juicy, soft, and flavorful. We also enjoyed the Mongolian Beef and Shrimp with Eggplants. Both were cooked just right and had great texture. The only cons were that they were extremely oily, even for Asian standard, and the small portion, resembling single servings for individuals and not family meals (this goes back to my very first sentence).

Yelp
The decor was what got me! Just beautiful Food came out fast and service was great!

Yelp
Tried Cafe Ginger last evening based on the recommendation of another. The venue is in a strip mall behind an Office Depot. From the outside it looks old timey. I was piqued until I walked in the door. The first thing we were asked if if we had a reservation. Seriously. I've never made a dinner reservation in my life. Weird question too as there were several empty tables. If they couldn't seat us we were leaving. But we stayed. CG aesthetic is somewhere between generic/sterile and pretentious. Not a cool vibe. We were hungry. A friend said the food was good so we didn't bail. We ordered the sautéed spinach, crunchy eggplant with chicken and warm sake. The serving size of the spinach was skimpy; a singular bunch for $15.00. For the same price most authentic Chinese restaurants would give you enough spinach for four people. To the eggplant. Tasty? Yes. Crunchy? Hardly. By the way that dish came with rice in a tiny bowl. Rice is not expensive. A tiny bowl? Really. Oh yes the Sake. it might as well have been served in a thimble Lastly I'll wrap the review up by discussing service. Our server was an automaton. Pleasant sure. Personable, hardly. There is a man and a woman who rove around that work for CG seemingly scanning for situations on the floor where intervention is mandated. Their presence is jarring. Never were we asked if we were enjoying our meal. We felt rushed line they wanted our table. They will swoop in and pull your plate the moment you take your last bite. Then there"s the "would we like to see the desert menu"? No thanks. WE are all set. WE won't be back. Recommend: No

Yelp
Alright. No signature dishes that stuck out, so was basic and average. Lovely bussers and food runners. Ordered the sesame chicken for $17.95. Received 8 pieces of chicken. $2.25 a bite. Recession really be hitting, dayum. Lesson learned.

Richard C.

Yelp
Cafe Ginger is a solid restaurant that always has impeccable service. The Chinese food I would classify as Americanized, but tasty. We love eating here, and frequently do, as they know their clientele; that being a less trendy-seeking crowd who value service, relaxation, taste and conversation over that which is slick and noisy. The sushi offerings, while not Kata Robata level, are certainly respectable. I find the wonton soup to be some of the best in the city. And I have yet to find any place that has such consistently great and reasonable martinis. If I had thought to review this place earlier, you would have found me with many check-ins
google avatar

Christine L.

Yelp
This used to be my go to Chinese place, but I think they changed out the cooks! The duck appetizer was fine. With two crepes and a good amount of duck for two. We couldn't eat our entrees tonight. His sesame chicken was more like a soggy orange chicken with some sesame seeds on top. My shrimp and eggplant dish was extremely spicy /my mouth was on fire. Dinner portions are bigger but also more than twice as expensive as lunch portions. Unfortunately, a very pricey and disappointing to go dinner experience, we do not recommend.
google avatar

Steven H.

Yelp
Always good food and service at Cafe Ginger. Great appetizers and varied entrees. Companions enjoyed shrimp and fried rice and chicken vegetable lunch orders. I will stick with classic dishes, sushi was only passable. Service by was seamless by Mala on busy Sunday. If you haven't visited we always appreciate gracious management and beautiful decor.
google avatar

Yelp
I frequent this area a lot due to shopping and the gym and I've always been curious. I stopped by on a Saturday afternoon. They were not terribly busy but had a nice crowd. I was immediately seated and attended to. I order a lychee martini which was really good. For food, I ordered their lunch special happy family. It was delicious and came with a soup which I got the wonton and a side which I opted for the crab puffs. I can't wait to stop by again very soon.
google avatar

Amanda C.

Yelp
We've always passed by here and never stopped. We finally made the stop. They provided great service and deliciously fresh entrees.
google avatar

Yelp
I always have a great experience when I come. I stopped in for a quick bite. I ordered the Tuna Tartar. (made spicy) It looked amazing and tasted delicious! The manager and waiters are always so nice and attentive.
google avatar

Yelp
Super friendly staff and great service. I would come here over and over. Feels like a place where everyone knows your name. It's fancy but at a reasonable level. Can relax and still have a good time.
google avatar

Shirin L.

Yelp
We decided to come here last minute instead of going to another restaurant we had planned to go to, and we are soooo glad we picked this place!! The place looks small from the outside but is actually quite big inside. It was also quite packed during dinner time but yet their service was really good and friendly. We ordered their garlic chicken, chicken with eggplant, chicken fried rice, and their triple chocolate ice cream cake. Everything was excellent! I would order all these dishes again and try some of their other stuff as well. Their food had so much flavor and such good fragrance! Highly recommend this place!
google avatar

Schuyler S.

Yelp
I've lived in the area for awhile and never thought much of it from the outside. Once you walk through the doors though, it's a very well decorated place. Dimly lit for a nice ambiance. The staff is very nice and helpful. Lots of seating for whatever your group size. They just just about every Asian style dish you would want. You'll definitely find something you like on the menu. Also several great cocktail and dessert options.
google avatar

Sylvia L.

Yelp
Excellent food and service, with a lovely ambiance! My daughter enjoys visiting the restaurant whenever she craves Chinese food. It's perfect for lunch meetings.

Mark H.

Yelp
I went there for lunch and was pleasantly surprised with the prices on the lunch menu very economically priced I had gotten the triple delight, which is very tasty. It came along with some hot and sour soup, which was incredible and an eggroll, which I could've eaten a dozen. After that experience, it look forward to going back again several times because I thought it was that good I highly recommend anyone to go there for lunch the lunch menu valid till 4 o'clock in the afternoon.

Robert R.

Yelp
Food is middle of the road considering all the other options available in Houston. It's "consistent" If you're a regular, service is great. If you're new, don't expect much. The "service group" is tight so be mindful of gossip being passed from server to favorite customer. Ambiance is pleasant. Casual.
google avatar

Libby H.

Yelp
Very solid, comfort Chinese food! This leans more on the Americanized menu side but still good for takeout! We have been going here for takeout for years. We have eaten in once - and the ambiance is nice inside as well! The favorites are sesame chicken, shrimp lo mein, and crab rangoons. Sometimes when we order takeout though, they forget a fried rice side that we ordered here and there but other than that - all positive experience!
google avatar

Rex C.

Yelp
We wanted to go to Qin dynasty but they were closed due to a holiday so we randomly tried cadre ginger. Come to find out this is qin dynasty 2.0. As soon as I walked in I recognized two of the managers from qin dynasty. Right away we made eye contact and talked and caught up. I hadn't seen them in a year or so since qin dynasty sold out to new management and turns out the old team is now at cafe ginger. What are the odds if that!!!? The service was great. The inside is decorated nice. Great place for date night or dinner. Etc. Food: the food was very close to qin dynasty but not quite their yet. The beef with fresh hot pepper had too much corn starch it was good but way too much corn starch. The generals Tsos was really good. I will definitely be back when I am in the area. Great food and great people!
google avatar

Keysha F.

Yelp
I love the food at Gingers. It is near my job and I like to grab a light lunch that includes soup. I generally get extra and have lunch for a few days. I really enjoy it appears to be clean and the staff and owners are extremely nice. I have been several times and will continue to go. I have never had anything there there that I did not like.
google avatar

K L.

Yelp
Great my fav is sesame chicken and chicken lettuce wrap, fancy but affordable. A must stop for houston trip

Mark G.

Yelp
Every meal here has been perfect - both the food and the service. Today, I feasted on the GARLIC SHRIMP and my husband splurged on the CHILEAN SEA BASS. If you've never been to this gem, you should treat yourself. It's worth a visit just to enjoy the artwork throughout the space. On an amusing note: we noticed a misspelling on our "to-go bag", where it listed a partnership with "UBER EARS"!
google avatar

Priscila P.

Yelp
I've only been here two times with my family and the times we have been have been a blast! The restaurant is clean. The staff is friendly and very attentive to your needs. I would definitely recommend this restaurant out! The food is delicious. I think the last time I went here I got sushi and fried rice that sort of stuff. It was amazing.
google avatar

Kyndall K.

Yelp
Cozy place with a stylish interior and a wide variety of dishes. I really enjoyed the sushi rolls -- fresh and beautifully presented. The staff was friendly, though the wait time was a bit long. A great spot for a relaxed dinner. Will definitely come back!
google avatar

Scott G.

Yelp
I know I'm not the majority reviewer because there's so many five star reviews, but I thought the roasted duck was overcooked, doused in sauce and no crispy skin. The fried rice was mediocre at best. The atmosphere is spectacular, the service was just OK. I was really craving duck and I left unsatisfied. I give the overall experience a 7. I will go back and try something different and hopefully have a different experience.
google avatar

Greg R.

Yelp
We arrived but didn't have reservations. Had to wait about 10 minutes. Next time we will have reservations. Beautiful place inside. Very comfortable. The service was great. Always being attentive. The food was wonderful. We will be going back!
google avatar

Dan Q.

Yelp
We come here a couple of times a year for special occasions. It's not cheap but it has a very open, pleasant and classy atmosphere and the food is pretty good - Szechuan dumplings were tasty, fried calamari was tender and not rubbery, kung pao chicken was flavorful and had a (mild) hint of actual Szechuan pepper - and cocktails are very good. Attentive service without being overbearing or fake-friendly (I prefer waitpeople who are trained waitpeople, not buddies). It's in one of the upscale matching strip malls along this stretch of W. Gray and is much nicer inside than you think it will be when you park. And the parking is easy and free.
google avatar

James W.

Yelp
Exceptional service provided by June. Food was delicious and freshly prepared. Ambience was electric! Perfect date night spot at the bar.

Norma M.

Yelp
Cafe Ginger is one of the BEST Asian restaurants in the City of Houston. As a matter of fact, it does not matter that it is Asian, regardless, it is just phenomenal! The food was cooked to perfection, the service was professional, and the relaxed ambience is totally indescribably. A 'Heaven on Earth' experience that is unforgettable. Forget the 4.0 rating on YELP because I give this restaurant a total of (10) STARS!
google avatar

Anissa A.

Yelp
Came back to cafe ginger and brought a friend. It was another great experience. The only thing we ordered and didn't love was the seafood fried rice.
google avatar

Keila B.

Yelp
Service was top-notch, formidable and professional. The ambiance was relaxing with water and classical music playing in the background, I felt relaxed the whole time! I ordered steamed chicken with vegetables (bokchoy, mushroom, asparagus, broccoli and bell pepper) cooked in white wine. I had the lunch special which runs from 11-4pm everyday, and you have soup, side of rice and an appetizer to accompany. I chose the wonton soup which was delightful, delectable crab puffs and fried rice. I will say the only disappointment was the white rice. Soy sauce provided was not too spicy. I just wish it was a bit cleaner as our table had remnants of the previous party on the booth and the fried rice was a bit disappointing. It was lightly fried with no vegetables or much egg for that matter. I will have to return to try the fried menu items. My mother ordered the Beijing chicken which had a bit of spice and I tried it- slightly spicy and tad over-salted but would have paired better with steamed rice to balance it out. Overall, flavors were spectacular and the service here was some of the best I've had while dining in an Asian restaurant. They were even accommodating to a group who had a service dog.
