The 18 Best Restaurants in Budapest, Hungary | Eater

"This downtown restaurant is a neighborhood institution famed for its prewar Budapest ambience. In keeping with the bourgeois tastes of the period, the interior boasts a Persian-carpeted dining room and curvy Thonet bentwood chairs. For a local experience, visit at lunchtime, when office workers from the nearby financial district flock for cold fruit soups, veal paprikash, oversized schnitzel, and vegetable stews studded with meatballs. Owner Gábor Molnár’s cheerful presence has been a constant since the opening in 1995." - Tas Tobias

The restaurant has a really cozy atmosphere. They have both a standard menu and a special one with recommendations, handwritten on posters. I ordered the foie gras, and they served complimentary bread — a really good ciabatta. The foie gras was absolutely amazing! So fragrant and rich, with a perfect amount of fat, and the portion was quite generous. The potato slices were also cooked just right. I was totally satisfied — the best foie gras I’ve had in Budapest!

We made a reservation for six people for dinner and were seated at our table without any issues upon arrival. They have a standard menu as well as a daily/weekly specials menu displayed on the wall (also available in English). At our table, we ordered the duck, the goose leg, and the pan-fried foie gras. The foie gras was especially outstanding — both in flavor and in portion size. The duck main course was good, though compared to other places I’ve tried, it felt slightly overcooked. The goose leg, on the other hand, was excellent: perfectly crispy on the outside and very flavorful. One detail that caught my attention was that in the photos I had seen before, a single portion appeared to come with two goose legs served on the same plate, whereas ours came with only one. The dishes arrived quite quickly. The atmosphere inside was calm, though in my opinion a bit dim and on the darker side.

Close to the Basilica. Tried Hungarian dishes here for the first time. Their goulash is delicious. My favorite was part of their lunch menu, the oven baked duck leg. Servings were generous. They have limited non-alcoholic drinks. We ordered lemon iced tea and house-made iced tea. Both served in big glasses. Service was great and they also have clean toilets.

We immediately found a table when we arrived, and the staff member who attended to us was very kind and attentive. I wanted to try the duck, and it was both delicious and filling with its large portions. The service was quick. The only problem was that a strong smell of food was coming from the ventilation window downstairs, which was quite disturbing for us.

Really delicious food — even though it’s in a tourist area, I can assure you it’s absolutely worth it. If you’re coming for great food, this is your place! It doesn’t have a fancy atmosphere or special lighting, but that means nothing once you taste the food. I also saw the owner personally making sure everything was running well, which is always wonderful to see. Thank you for keeping such high-quality food and standards!

My wife and I visited this restaurant 15 years ago and we loved it. Since we had fond memories of the place we decided to revisit it. Unfortunately we won't go there for a third time. Food wasn't bad but also wasn't great. For the appetizer we ordered the duck salad which contained seared duck meat on top of chopped tomato, lettuce and onions smothered in a vinegraitte which overpowered everything. My goulash with pasta was more or less ok but the meat was quite rough to chew. My wifes duck legs were a much better attempt but the meat was rather chewy. Dessert was a disaster, - 5 for presentation. The ambience of the place was great. Tables and chairs much too narrow and uncomfortable.

I first came here in 1996 with my sister who was living in Budapest. I returned in 2018, sent numerous friends here and just returned again in Nov 2025. Each time my meals were delicious and authentic, very much like what my Hungarian mother made. Restaurants in Budapest have become outrageously expensive, Cafe Kor still has reasonable prices. Do not miss coming here! 🇭🇺❤️🌶️

Very good food, the best I had in Budapest, a bit out of turistic ways and it probably influences. We ordered goulash and duck, both were delicious.
