Where to Get Great Pie in Montreal This Fall | Eater Montreal

"This relative newcomer to Montreal’s South Shore has Filipino pies worth the detour. Go for a slice of coconutty buko pie or whatever is on rotation. If you’re lucky, it could be creamy ube with marshmallow fluff or a calamansi meringue pie. Ahead of Thanksgiving weekend, the café is also taking orders for whole buko pies. Place them here." - Holly Tousignant

A Filipino Cafe, Indian Ice Cream Shop, and Other Montreal Restaurant Openings, August 2021 | Eater Montreal

"On Montreal’s South Shore I noticed a new specialty coffee shop opened by longtime friends Jean-Noel Quilatan and Phil Peñalosa that serves local roasts from Binocle and 94 Celsius and Vancouver brand Kapé (which sources beans from small female-led farms in the Philippines), alongside Filipino-inspired pies from Dre Mejia, lechón sandwiches and a limited-time vegan Cinnamon Toast Crunch affogato." - Valerie Silva

Everything is perfect, would love to live there 24/7. The ube matcha is the best matcha I’ve ever had, BUT still dreaming of the blueberry (and earl grey (i think?)) seasonal flavor they had 🥰💕

We love this cafe, really good coffee, breakfast sandwiches and great and friendly service :). Also good cold drinks (ube syrup, matcha etc). They often have specials (kamayan, wraps, burgers etc) and partner with locals (pop up yoga event, pastry features, floristry etc) so would recommend following them on IG!

A nice little cafe with big flavour. The mamon (Filipino sponge cake) were soft and moist - both ube and pandan great, subtly sweet flavours. The tocino burger was well balanced with the atsara (pickled papaya slaw). We were just passing through Montreal and was very happy that we made the side trip to catch up with a friend here. We left with a bag of mamon to take home. We'll be adding this to our stops the next time we make another trip.

We visited after seeing a TikTok that called this the spot. We stopped in after exploring Quebec City, as we decided to make a brief stopover in Montreal before heading back to Toronto. We were genuinely impressed with both the quality of the drinks and the food. The menu was in French, so the staff kindly took the time to explain everything to us, which we really appreciated. I also heard that the owner is a car enthusiast, though I didn’t get a chance to ask—he may have been busy or not on site at the time. After checking their Instagram, it was great to see that they host car meets, and I even recognized a few cars from ImportFest in Toronto. The experience was so good that we ended up ordering extra to take home for the week. The smash burgers were absolutely on point.

Small little vibing cafe. I liked the ambience. The cafe latte was smooth but medium strong. Not as strong as I like. But would come again. Their burgers ( tried their vege burger) were amazing and also the hashbrown. Would definitely visit again. The girl who served me was also very polite.

Lovely little coffee shop! The matcha was really good and so is the food! Light music perfect place for studying or a quick work session between appointments!

Google
Really lovely cafe! I’ve been going to Kuya since they opened up and loved their coffee. They seemed to change the recipe for the ube sauce so now it’s sweeter and more liquid. Still good but not as good as before. I wish their coffee can be a bit consistent. We’ve noticed that the coffee taste quite different depending on the barista

Yelp
Come here for the vegan sandwich. It's amazing. I could eat 3 in one sitting if I let myself go! Their matcha is also excellent with oat milk, or you can ask for their spicy chai with almond milk (omg so good). Not sure why they're not packed AF because they should be. Great chill ambience and good place to meet, and think / study if you're okay with cafe noise and music.

Yelp
Finally visited Café Kuya after wanting to visit since they opened, and o boy was I missing out! The coffee here is SUPER GOOD. We tried their cortado with coffee beans from Peru and it was well balanced, fruity but still maintained an intense coffee flavour without being bitter. The filter coffee was also good, although not overly strong or thick it did have a fruity aftertaste. We were at the café for breakfast and tried the pork longganisa fried egg breakfast sandwich which was unique (on the sweeter side) and simply everything you would want in a bfast sandwich! The fried egg and pork sausage were perfect and sat toasty inbetween the slices of bread. We're sad we couldn't stay for the lunch menu! Service and hospitality are amazing too! The café is also super cute and modern! Highly recommend this café for all my coffee lovers who also enjoy food with filipino flair!

Yelp
I love supporting local and when I heard an independent coffee shop had opened close to home, I couldn't wait to check it out! Cafe Kuya is a Filipino coffee shop located on Blvd Rome in Brossard. Tucked away in the corner of the strip mall, the cafe is cozy and charming inside with a fun and relaxed atmosphere. The staff are super friendly and welcoming, taking time to passionately explain all the wonderful Filipino delights on the menu. Coffee aficionados - this is the place for you! The barista really knows his coffee, from offering two different types of blends that can be tasted in a variety of different ways including a V60 pourover! Something unique that they offer, which is a definite MUST to try, is their famous UBE syrup. Turning the infamous Filipino-dessert into a syrup, you can ask to transform your latte or iced coffee by adding this delicious concoction and lightly sweetening up your drink. I ordered an Ube Latte which was perfectly sweet and creamy, alongside their freshly-baked mango and peach pie. The pie was divine with a buttery and flaky thick crust filled with chunky pieces of mango. I will definitely be returning to try the popular coconut and custard Buko pie which looked equally as appetizing! Overall, a great new addition to the South Shore!

Yelp
Finally another good coffee shop on the south shore. Best thing is that it is Filipino influenced and they serve food. I always order a cortado and a lot of times, I find it way too diluted. But not here...it had a good coffee taste to it...almost like Olympico which is my favourite coffee place. I went there for lunch so ordered their lechon sandwich. I really like the addition of the grilled pineapple for a touch if sweetness. I could have eaten a 2nd sandwich easily. Ordered their coconut pie and as a good Asian dessert, it wasn't too sweet. Even my friend who doesn't like sweet stuff liked it. Opted for a 2nd coffee and tried their cortado with ube...wow. I really recommend trying it. I will definitely be back to try the rest of their menu. Very small place tho with just a couple of tables.

Yelp
I was so excited when I heard that a Philipino café had opened up in Brossard! The cafe is located just off the 132 highway at the Rome exit in Brossard. I loved the vibe. It's a quaint cafe with about 5 tables for people to sit and chat or do work. The cafe offers free wifi. The staff are all really nice and welcoming and are passionate about coffee. I ordered a Cortado with one of their Philipino blends and it was excellent. Their coffee is definitely one of the best on the south shore. Similar quality to café pistache et Nlatte. They also sell bags of beans of well known roasters as well as Philipino blends. I love that in addition to great coffee they also serve excellent food. Sometimes food at cafes can feel like an afterthought but their menu is legit and at really reasonable prices! I ordered their lechon sandwich, pork belly chimchurri mayo and grilled pineapple on a potato bun. It was so delicious, i could have eaten a second one if I had the appetite. I also ordered their chicken adobo steamed bun and their miso pesto noodles with fried tofu (vegan option). Both fishes were great! Finally i couldn't resist their Buko pie (coconut pie with mochi and shaved parmesan on top). I've never had anything like it and it was SOOO good. It was sweet and salty and the crust was flaky. It tasted like a home baked pie. I will definitely be popping by Café Kuya regularly!
