The Best Cafes in Montreal - Eater Montreal

"Well-established Larue & Fils operates three shops (on de Castelnau, Jarry East, and St-Zotique) and made a splash with an expansion into vegan ice cream in the summer of 2021. The design of each location has a minimalist feel and is a great spot to catch up with friends." - Daniel Bromberg, Eater Staff

While on holiday in Montreal visiting family, and near my sister's house, we discovered this fabulous coffee shop. Great flat whites that were just perfect and the best and lightest carrot cake I have ever eaten ( the moistest). Will definitely go back again next time 👍🙏

It’s a lovely little café located near Marché Jean-Talon. With quick service and a nice terrace, it’s the perfect stop to hangout with friends. Coffees are good and the desserts are delicious as well.

The carrot cake is really delicious, very flavorful and not too sweet! also lovely music choices, very calming

They make excellent Matcha lattes and the views of the church on the patio are stunning! Not much available for food items but drinks and seating area are top tier for the neighbourhood. Merci!

Enjoyed a fresh morning with the coffee and a motcha snack in this lovely cafe. I always prefer the local cafe like this than the chain restaurants like Starbucks or even Tim hortons. It is hard to tell but the atmosphere in this local cafe is warm and cozy. What’s more important, there may be some surprising items in this kind of cafe while in the chain cafe, the items are fixed.

Great coffee and service. Love the place. The only negative thing to say is that sometimes the air feels stuffy in the Winter because it doesn’t circulate enough given how many people are inside.

Café Larue & fils is a delightful coffee haven that I stumbled upon recently, and it’s safe to say it has become my new favorite spot. The ambiance of the café is cozy and inviting, with a rustic charm that makes you feel right at home the moment you walk in. The coffee here is simply exceptional – rich, aromatic, and brewed to perfection. Whether you’re a fan of classic espresso or fancy a more adventurous latte, they have it all, and each cup is made with care and expertise. What really sets this café apart is its mouth-watering selection of pastries and light bites. Everything is freshly made and delicious, perfect for pairing with your coffee. Their croissants are a must-try – flaky, buttery, and just divine! The staff deserves a special mention for their warm and friendly service. They greet everyone with a smile and are always ready to offer recommendations or have a pleasant chat, adding a personal touch to the overall experience. Whether you’re looking for a place to relax and unwind with a book, catch up with friends, or simply grab a quick coffee to go, Café Larue & fils is the ideal spot. It’s not just a café; it’s a little community hub that makes you feel welcome every time.

I agree with the review on third wave that this place is classist and very pretencious. It's the kind of place a revolutionary would feel like they have bipolar disorder, as they process humanities greif and watch everyone aimlessly sad. Fake smiles don't tell the real story. Deep regret and sorrow can be felt in a developers coffee shop, even if it's supposed to be a third space. My coffee was very good but I spent my time there studying the trauma of drifted unprocessed surface elitism on chatgpt, not really enjoying my coffee and seeming myself. I'm very worried who we focus on enjoying anymore and keep running away to my mother.

Yelp
I'm sad to write this because I've had amazing experiences here before and considered this my favorite cafe in MTL, but I won't be coming back because whoever the middle-aged dude is who works here is racist and treated my partner and me like trash when we came in (neither of us are white). Over the years I've seen him behind the counter and previously I had a white partner so it tracks that I never witnessed blatant racism from him. I'm not sure if he's the owner or not but if he is that sucks for the culture. I'd recommend steering clear of this shop if you're not white (and maybe in general......?). I don't want to say much more. Two stars bc good coffee and the rest of the baristas have always been gracious.

Yelp
Lovely coffee place in the Jean Talon market vicinity, I had an Oatly cappuccino, the coffee was quite delicious, not an ounce of bitterness, although I expected more foam even with this brand of non-dairy milk. They had a vegan option, a lemony bar with fruits and seeds, a bit stereotypical but delicious nonetheless and they forgot to give it after I ordered the coffee. Still a great place, would come again and try the chai latte.

Yelp
This is a lovely cafe. Its is everything you want in a neighbourhood cafe. Prices are reasonable, small selection of sweets, and the coffee is delicious. The lady behind the counter was friendly and probably the nicest looking women in Montreal.

Yelp
Larue et Fils is a cute cafe in Villeray serving up third wave coffee to the locals. It really feels like your friendly, neighbourhood cafe. The interior is kind of small but in summer they have exterior seating and given how it's located on a quiet street it looks like it would be really nice to sit out there. The coffee is pretty good and I really enjoyed the iced latte that I got. They also have freshly-baked goods on hand should you be hungry. My chocolate chip cookie wasn't the best I have ever had but it was still decent. If you are here to work there is a wi-fi connection and it is pretty speedy. There is a lack of outlets so you will have to rely on battery power for your computer. This is definitely the kind of coffee shop I would be at all the time if I lived in the neighbourhood. It's cozy, inviting and just all around a good cafe.

Yelp
Cozy little coffee shop on Castelnault Est. It is not old school italian coffee but it isn't the third wave kind either which is good because I'm not a fan if fruity coffee. The decor is simple yet stylish with wooden table. I love the front counter table by the window...feels so relaxing and calm :) The music is also perfect for the weekends...felt like I could have stayed there the entire day!

Yelp
Updating my review since this place changed names a while back, and added a bunch of outdoor seating. I love a patio on a leafy residential street, it's a unique kind of calm. The staff here yesterday were super friendly and kind - helping me carry my water outside when my hands were full of sandwich and coffee. The sandwich was a chunk of fresh baguette full of herbed goat cheese, bitter greens and pumpkin and sesame seeds - filling and light and tasty and $5. Cash only, pretty cosy.

Yelp
Larue, I love you. Great spot, greater coffee, good to their locals, WiFi can be a bit spotty at times but generally, its a great work spot too. They can get super packed, both inside and out. A bit slow during rush which is understandable. Food menu is healthy and delicious with two choices of soup, salad and sandwich. Always a veggie option. I hear the oatmeal cookie is the way to go. Missing a star because the seating can be limited at times and the wait just a tad too long in the early morning. But, nothing is perfect :)

Yelp
Fantastic coffee, but more specifically, the chai latte is incredible!! Not ideal for studying though, with very few plugs and chairs that aren't particularly comfortable. This takes nothing away from how good the place is though! Tastefully decorated as well, and good service.

Yelp
I've somehow had a better experience when this place was called Caffè della Via. I went there a few times and both the coffee and service where good. I've been back twice since the name changed, and somehow got a very unfriendly service on both occasion. The girl who works there almost makes you feel like you're the one who should be serving her, and has a very annoying spoiled brat attitude. To me, that's enough to go buy a not-out-of-this-world coffee somewhere else.

Yelp
If you like snooty service in a too cool environment with a coffee club like atmosphere, here's your place. High prices and slow service in a hipster milieu doesn't appeal to me. I'll pass on the java friends club every time

Yelp
Love this corner café near the Jean-Talon market. The ambiance on the weekends makes you wanting to stay there for an afternoon. I always choose a cortado if I want a strong boost with little a smaller portion, or a double espresso Latte if I NEED a cup of coffee nutty flavoured boost with 3.25% milk! Choice of pastries are kinda limited, (only croissant, muffins and cookies) so I never tried the goodies displayed on the counter. Howadays, I've noticed that the roasted beans used are less favoured, leaving very slim after taste on your palette after each sip.

Yelp
While they make a beautiful expresso, the prices are high and the place is crowded. They have a lovely outdoor patio in the summer. Worth it for a treat, definitely NOT an everyday spot. Doesn't offer regular coffee.

Yelp
I love this Café, the quality of the coffee is exceptional. It's location perched on the corner of castelnau and Henri-julien it's a great place to watch the world float by.

Yelp
I am impressed with the location and aesthetics of this cafe. I have only tried the iced latte, but I keep coming back for it. Then you can easily walk through little italy and enjoy some coffee :)

Yelp
I really liked this place. A cool and cosy coffee spot with good coffee and a good vibe. It is a little off the main drag, but don't be fooled - people know about this place. It was packed! To the point that I had to semi encroach on someone else's personal space when I first got there and took the only remaining seat. Got to love communal tables. I heard a few people throw words across the cafe to the baristas - clearly a lot of people who go here are regulars and have a rapport with the staff. The baristas were cute though. Sign me up!

Yelp
my daily :) best coffee in montreal and sweet staff.
