This restaurant made a buzz when it opened, as it was presented as this mysterious, long-lost art deco haven inside the Eaton center. It is also named ''Restaurant Île de France'', which hints at its strong classic French influence. You can access the elevators to the restaurant from the mall, but also from the entrance at 1500 Blvd Robert-Bourassa. The lobby is stern, with dark colours, wood and bronze. A stark contrast with the electronic selection pad, which only has one option: the 9th floor. Upstairs, the corridor displays designs from the era, and new renovations are clearly distinguishable from the old fixtures (herringbone floor). The restaurant is beautiful and spacious, with a very noticeable lack of air circulation. An abundance of haphazardly stashed flowers decorate the counters. The waitress led us past the beautiful bar, and pointed out a little baked goods cart pushed around like at dim sum.
The menu was very conservative, very classic. We went for the mushroom toast, the French omelette, and a side of potatoes (only because the waitress asked if the omelette alone would be sufficient). The food came fairly quickly, and was very nicely plated (with a tendency to top dishes with a rough tuff of parsley). The most outstanding features were the faultless balance of flavours, and a technical perfectionism. The chives were chopped with exactitude, the omelette's external and internal textures were ideal, and the sauces were rich and velvety.
A very satisfying meal from the technical standpoint, perfect for classics. The kitchen is irreproachable; the dining room staff could be a bit more polished.
Note: I really loved the surface of the wooden table, it was sooooo smooth, I kept touching it like a weirdo!
