The Best Cafes in Montreal | Eater Montreal

"A specialty coffee shop with a flexible, multidisciplinary space that can respond to its clients’ needs, this Quartier Latin addition opened in the summer of 2021 and has been flooded with UQAM students eager for another place to study ever since. A fun, outgoing staff slings coffee all day, seven days a week. Their latte créatif — seasonally-inspired fruit lattes — makes for a fun twist on an old classic." - Daniel Bromberg

I’ve tried both the espresso and the matcha here, and they’re truly great. I love the rotating exhibitions of local artists on the walls, it gives the space a unique and creative vibe. The energy is always positive, thanks to the friendly and welcoming staff. It’s also a great spot if you’re looking for a relaxed place to work or enjoy a coffee surrounded by art.

This cafe was a beautiful visit! Let me break down my experience here: First, the atmosphere of the cafe is quite nice. It seems to always be full of people, which is a good sign. All the walls are decorated with different kinds of art, might it be photography, fabric art, or paintings. The furniture comes in different sizes and shapes (some being large tables with benches, and some being smaller, circular tables with chairs around it), and they all fit the vibe of a modern, hip cafe. The majority of patrons sitting down are doing work, and the music is quiet enough to allow yourself to focus. If you have some work to do, the energy here is great for that! Also, they have a clothing rack full of items you can purchase. My friend commented saying that they’re reasonably priced and cute. She found two pieces she ended up buying, which is rare for her! Second, the drinks. The matcha had an earthly, real flavor to it. I really like the flavor of real matcha, so I loved my drink. If you prefer a more starbucks matcha flavor, I imagine you will think theirs tastes like dirt. My friend got their latte, and she quite liked the flavor. She said the flavor of the espresso was dark and enjoyable, but also admitted she didn’t know how to properly describe it as she loves all kinds of coffee. From the way the drink smelled and the color of the espresso, I can assume that the expresso was pulled properly and the beans are of high quality. I would highly recommend the matcha, and my friend would recommend the latte! Third, the food. Both my friend and I got a chocolate croissant. I got one that was leftover from the day before (I’m a little cheap and it was 20% off) and got it warmed up. It was quite delicious! I can imagine it being pretty mediocre if I didn’t get it warmed up, but I like to think that was because I got a leftover one. My friend got a fresh one and commented on how good it was, so that’s a good sign! If you get their baked goods, I think I would just warm it up. If not, shell out more money for a fresher one. Finally, the workers. The workers were quite nice and fast! I didn’t have a long interaction with either of them, but they were polite and kindly smiling as they spoke to me. I was slightly confused when picking up my friend’s latte at the bar, but the barista didn’t seem to be annoyed by me. They seem to be pretty patient here! Also, they speak both english and french, for those of us who are visiting and only know bonjour or merci. To conclude, this is a great cafe spot! I would come again if I wasn’t visiting for a short time. Suggested purchases: matcha latte, chocolate croissant.

A wonderful cup of coffee and even better croissants/croissant breakfast sandwich! Very accommodating as well. We had a child with a stroller and had no issue coming in and finding a space to enjoy.

Nice atmosphere for working or reading a book. Very good latte and decent mocha. I wanted to try a croissant but there was no heating option.

I was so confused by this iced matcha latte. Don’t think I have ever seen one this color. Turned out most of the match tea was at the bottom, but I was basically drinking iced milk for the most part. Even when I got to the matcha part, the taste was bland though. 🙃

The almondine avec chocolate et noisettes was not as good as it sounds, but it still was nice. Nice service, great ambience.

Yelp
Top tier breakfast as someone who's bigger on the drip coffee as well, they did it justice!

Yelp
This coffee shop was right next to our hotel. So we tried it and I got the regular iced vanilla latte and it was so good! Ask for half sweetened or it's way too sweet! And the staff was so nice. Especially to my 4 year old! We loved getting our morning coffee here.

Yelp
We stayed at the Marriott right next door to this cafe, and we went daily! They were very helpful to us in English, bathrooms were clean, vibes were good, and we sat and enjoyed coffee every morning before adventuring out. And as an American, it was so nice to have such a great ICED latte every morning!

Yelp
I got a lavender latte that was somehow unbelievably smooth and creamy. I don't know how or why it was so good, but I absolutely have to go back and try to find out. I also got a kouign amann pastry, and it was heavenly. I don't know where they get it from (since they obviously don't have the patisserie setup to make those in-house) but it was amazing and not at all the usual lower quality type of viennoiserie served at coffee shops.

Yelp
We were staying at the Fairfield next door, so I thought I'd grab a latte before leaving Montréal. The interior of this café immediately caught my eye - it's super spacious with pops of yellow / orange. There are two floors, and seems extremely conducive to collaboration. I ordered a hazelnut latté - I find that flavouring is not always the most apparent at some cafes, but this drink definitely don't skimp on the syrup. It was a little over $6 for a regular size. Would love to come back here if I was ever in town for a bit longer and in need of a work space!

Yelp
My friends and I stopped into Café Léo for our first cup of coffee in Montreal. The baristas were both friendly and helpful, giving solid recommendations for what to drink. My espresso was really good and everyone else was satisfied with their coffee. I would like to try more of their offerings when I'm back in town.
