"Café Luitpold is a traditional café located within walking distance of Munich's old town and Odeonsplatz, popular for its breakfast and daytime offerings." - The MICHELIN Guide

"Some of Munich's Finest Baked Goods The Confiserie Cafe Luitpold is known as the "sinful mile" and is the meeting place for sweet connoisseurs in the heart of Munich . Bring the flavors back home with you with a package of cookies, marzipan or chocolates skillfully prepared by chef Albert Ziegler. It won't be the cheapest souvenir you bring back, but it will likely be the most delicious."

Nice environment, friendly staff, cool options, and an enjoyable location in the city made my visit memorable. I liked their coffee, cakes, and pastries; each bite was a nice experience that catered to my foodie cravings. We got a chance to sit outside, and it was a nice experience during summertime, with the warm breeze and vibrant atmosphere enhancing our time there. We sampled a few different cakes, and as a dessert enthusiast, I found them to be delicious. The prices were friendly too, making it easy to indulge without breaking the bank. Overall, this spot is perfect for anyone looking to enjoy good food in a relaxed setting.

Delicious Steak Dinner in a Beautiful Setting We had a lovely dinner at Café Luitpold. The cold roast beef was perfectly tender and full of flavour, paired with a fresh, vibrant salad and delicious roasted potatoes on the side. Everything was beautifully presented and tasted fantastic. The atmosphere was elegant yet relaxed, and the service was friendly and attentive. A great spot for a quality meal in the heart of Munich — we’ll definitely be back!

Love this location. Went there multiple times for cakes and coffee which are really good. However, the “afternoon tea set” was slightly disappointing. The portions are really tiny considering the price and champagne is not included unlike at other places I tried.

Cool cafe in the historical center. Works only until 22:00, but at the same time there are a lot of visitors and a very lively atmosphere. Excellent coffee. At night you should wait a while for a waiter.

Google
A truly impressive location in Munich with a vast selection of dishes. Despite the large variety on the menu, the quality of the food remains exceptional. It’s rare to find such consistent quality in such a broad offering. I highly recommend this restaurant/caffe

We ordered drinks and desserts. Cakes look super fancy and the taste also good. They offer option of milk substitution such as oatmilk and lastose free milk where I find it really nice of them as there are rarely place which offer normal lactose free milk. 2 matcha latte we ordered were too sweet but still okay. Overall it is great! Recommended with reservation to sit under the roof glass for nice picture!

We wanted to have brunch here, but unfortunately, we got there late, as they serve the breakfast/brunch items until 11:45. We opted to stay for lunch, and had Flammkuchen with walnuts and goat cheese with a garnish of pomegranate arils, and roast beef. The Flammkuchen was really delicious and the pomegranate was a nice and fresh contrast to the cheese. However the roast beef was served cold, we didn't see that mentioned on the menu, and somehow was not to our taste. The cafe is really beautiful, especially when you sit in the greenhouse area of it. During the weekend and holidays they open the balcony area as well that has a nice view of the café. The staff was friendly and ready to help us with questions.

Yelp
The Cafe is in a great location, just a block or so away from soon tourist attractions and hop on hop off bus stops. Yet, it has a very local feel. If the weather is rainy like it was for me, sit inside the atrium. It has a great outdoor vibe but you're protected from the elements. The service was impeccable. I ordered the 3 course lunch: ginger carrot soup, veal shoulder (sous vide) and a chocolate tart with sour cream ice cream. Thw soup was delightful, the veal was good with nice presentation. The dessert was ok, not bad but nothing to write home about. However, I do not much like sweets so I shan't be the judge of a dessert. The meal was very affordable, everything for 44 Euro, about $48 US.

Yelp
Just okay. They were not excited to serve us and I imagine it was because we're Americans was told to wait to be seated and then they proceeded to ignore us. They made us move tables inexplicably. Same experience when we asked our server multiple times for the check. German hospitality ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ Beautiful looking desserts and lots to choose from! They looked prettier than they tasted and they forgot a salad. Nice outdoor cafe to sit and people watch the commuters. Not worth the special trip as a tourist.

Yelp
WORST EXPERIENCE! NEVER AGAIN. So we went to Cafe Luitpold yesterday around 5pm to have some dessert and coffee and we sat down me and my family and ordered the menu to look at. I was talking on my phone and my mother was keeping her bottle of water on the table. When the waiter Andy aka "Andi" came he said to my mother you can't keep the bottle of water on the table, my mother doesn't understand English, so she said ok and kept the water on the table, and i was talking on my phone so I wasn't focusing on what he was saying. Then suddenly he raised his voice loudly and said very rudely to my mother "PUT THE BOTTLE OF WATER DOWN NOW." She was confused and frustrated by him. When I heard him shouting i immediately hang up and raised my voice and told him ". HEY WHAT'S THE PROBLEM" he then started saying that he told her to put the water away and she didn't and how it's against policy. I took the water and put it in the bag then i told him "it's not a big issue it is just water" then i told him with a raised voice " YOU SHOULD ASK POLITELY AND NOT RAISE YOUR VOICE AGAIN ON CLIENTS! " He then started to act rudely and said with a raised voice "IT IS POLICY AND SHE DIDN'T TAKE THE WATER AWAY" then we started arguing loudly and he didn't back up or apologized even though he was rude and was raising his voice to my mother (an old lady). She felt uncomfortable and told me lets leave, so when we stand up to leave he was waving his hand rudely as in telling us to get out. It was the worst service we ever experienced, maybe it was out of racism as we are on a vacation and we are not local. This man should be punished for what he did. I was vey angry after we left the way he treated my mother. WORST EXPERIENCE! NEVER AGAIN.

Yelp
Came here last week for cake and coffee. The server was very friendly and helpful. Just a tip you just sit down at an open table. There is no hostess to seat you at a table. It's not like in America where there is someone there to seat people all the time. I had chocolate marizipan torte and coffee. The cake was wonderful and the coffee was also good. They also have outlets to charge your phones if your traveling. Sometimes it's hard to find places to charge your phone while you eat.

Yelp
The cakes were ok and may be a little drive from sitting out all day (to be fair, we did comes later in the evening). I think the cake we go is call Das Luitpold? We also go 2 more slices, with one of them being the strawberry cake and another similar to the Das Luitpold. All were ok - nothing too special.

Yelp
EAT ALL THE THINGS!!! Cafe Luitpold is the perfect image of an elegant European cafe: beautiful, clean, classy, professional service, and a pleasant outdoor sidewalk seating. Step inside, and your eyes will be immediately mesmerized to the decadent glass display featuring dozens of seducing desserts...resistance is futile! I couldn't decide on one dessert, so I picked out two desserts. I probably should've gone for three! Smile and wave at one of the lovely Fraus, point to what you want, and she'll hand you a ticket for each indulgence you want. Grab an empty table, and a gentleman will promptly arrive to take your tickets and drink order. Sit, drink, eat, and enjoy...and hopefully you don't smoke, gross! €3.30 250ml bottle water...a bit of rip off! €3.40 Coffee...a bit expensive, but delicious €4.60 Cake #1 €5.30 Cake #2 I never said Luitpold was cheap right? But if you factor in that German prices already include tax, and unlike America you're not expected to tip 15-20%...its really about the same.

Yelp
I was in town for a couple of days and ended up visiting Cafe Luitpold multiple times because it was that good. Such great ambiance and the sweets are incredible.

Yelp
One of only a few places open on Sunday, our Munich tour guide brought us to Cafe Luitpold for lunch. This historical cafe is so beautiful and offers the most beautiful and delicious chocolates and desserts in Munich. A must stop for dessert! Pricey for a meal. A string quartet was playing live music when we arrived and really enhanced our experience. Most patrons were enjoying a leisurely coffee and sweet of some sort. We had a lovely lunch in a lovely atmosphere. Meals were too pricey for lunch, but they do have a few more reasonably priced salads and appetizers. I really enjoyed my perfectly cooked salmon on greens. Others in my family enjoyed their small plates of tender, medium-rare roast beef and soup. One cheesecake was ordered and loved by our guide. Our server was courteous and efficient. Overall, we had a lovely lunch at Cafe Leipold. It's quite chWe'd definitely return for dessert, coffee and wine, but we wished they had separate lunch and dinner menus to offer more reasonable fare midday. With few options on a Sunday, Cafe Leipold is a solid choice.

Yelp
This cafe's cakes are amazing! I felt they are the best of cakes which I had in München. I tried a French style Schwarzwälder Kirsch Torte and Luitpold Torte. I leave nothing to be desired to the cakes. Because I went at the evening on Sunday, the cafe is too crowded that I had some difficulties to order and ask check to weiters. 私がミュンヘンで食べたケーキの中で一番美味しかったです。 特に、販売員のおばさんがオススメしてくれたフレンチスタイルの黒い森のケーキは高級感があって繊細で美味しかったです。

Yelp
Stumbled upon this French cafe and walked inside to enjoy some cakes after our afternoon walk. The cakes look delicious. They were also selling truffles, cookies and other sweets. We were seated in the back with good lights inside. I ordered grapefruit spritzer and luitpold cake. The cake has like 6 layers of it with marzipan and Riesling white mousse with dark chocolate frosting. Lovey ordered the cherry pie cake with coffee. This place is very cute and elegant. I can see my gfs and I hanging out here for wine or tea while gossiping! A must stop in Munchen. Little pricey but why not, you're on vacation!! Trust!

Yelp
Walked in and no one greeted us for a good 10 minutes. We walked around to different entrances, and still nobody paid us attention. We finally got someone's attention and they sat us down at a table almost immediately. I ordered the lamb with eggplants, and it was delicious! The lamb was really tender, but I found the eggplants were a bit bitter. Despite this, I finished every inch of my plate. I also ordered a hot chocolate, and it was really great! A tad too sweet for my liking, but the chocolate was very rich. I was able to get dessert and I got a berry cake and that was DELICIOUS. It was nice and light, and had great berry flavour. Our server was super nice, and really engaged with us. He was very sweet, and was attentive to our individual needs. Overall, pretty good!

Yelp
This place was delicious. The cakes were decadent and sweet. The prices were reasonable for a dessert store in Munich, and service was great. We will definitely be back!!

Yelp
This place was good but nothing out of the ordinary. We had to wait a bit for a table and I'm not quite sure why. While the cheesecake and chocolate cake were yummy, they weren't to die for. Might be an easy stop if you're nearby though!

Yelp
The cafe is elegant with perfect space. The desserts are too beautiful and delicious. The service is also great. If my friends come to München, I will definite bring them to this Cafe'. Really recommended.

Yelp
Most classy and elegant Coffee House in town. They offer all sorts of delicately designed cakes, whose taste and appearance will definitely make your day :) A booklet about events in Cafe Luitpold also caught my eyes and invited me back :)

Yelp
Delicious lunch with exceptional presentation. We had the pickled smoked salmon and the leek quiche and both were clean plate dishes. Frau Koch was wonderful and patient with our minimal German. Fun sitting outside, sidewalk cafe style. Thank you! Bruce and Gina

Yelp
In Munich, it was hard to find another place that can match Café Luitpold in dessert variety. You can find savory food here, but I didn't get a chance to try them. One of my biggest surprises was how different certain desserts were interpreted during my travel in Europe this time. Black Forest cake is a German classic, but the one I had at Café Luitpold was quite unique. The amount of cherry was so overwhelming to a point that I cannot finish. I am not saying it was bad, and I liked it on the first few bites. I just can't handle the amount of cherries. There was no skimping on ingredients for sure. I would definitely recommend this place if you are looking to satisfy your sweet tooth.

Yelp
I sat inside here last week with two others. The pastrami sandwich I enjoyed here is the kind of smokey deliciousness that makes you want to marry the cook. The "mini-fries", or whatever they are that accompany the sandwich, could be better conceptualized as, I don't know, real fries, or anything else that can easily be picked up by human fingers or standard utensils. Two of us had the pastrami sandwich, and the third had a pumpkin risotto that also made a very happy guest. The cappuccino here is also good, with a nice, silky foam, and the cakes look amazing, though I haven't yet personally enjoyed any of those. Our service was as cheerful as a squirrel on the first day of spring. She was responsive, and also helpful with recommendations, which includes saying when she hadn't yet tried one dish or another. It's a little over my price range for a deli/café meal, thus the 3 stars instead of 4, but on the whole an experience I can recommend.

Yelp
Had to fight people to get a table, being shooed away by waitresses like a bad smell. Waited forever for absolutely everything, the food was pretty amazing, but if you don't have 3 hours to spare for a small bit of food, forget this place.
google avatar

Alexander F.

Yelp
The cakes and food are usually quite ok, but service sometimes is very slow and unorganized. Definetely a nice location for a quick snack.

Vl D.

Yelp
The cafe has two very different areas: one is for desserts, the other for dinners. They are adjacent separated both spacially and visually (plain decor of the dessert place vs. ornate columns and ceiling of the dining place, whitecloth tables in the dining area, barebones arrangement in the dessert section). The dining section provides dishes of the modern cuisine with certain flare. We had a dinner (chose a "surprise me" 4-course meal with paired wines). The food was pretty good and inventive, but not terribly exciting. The service was also good, yet below the par for the food: our server, a trainee, was unable to tell us which wines was she serving or tell us much about the dishes, a must-have when the "surprise me" option - the first one on the menu! - is chosen, The ambiance is great, definitely walk into the conservatory (with a palm) via a passage in the back of the dining hall and observe the kitchen in operation through a glass wall. We came here for a wide variety of sweets, but this being late at night, the exciting pieces were all gone. Reservations are not needed on weekdays.

Yelp
While I have also had service issues here, my last visit was so kind and friendly being served at the counter buying cakes that I like to give CL a five star rating. Of course this is based also on their exceptional cakes. The signature cake is delicious, the fruit tarts fresh and great compositions and even the Krapfen surpassed every other one I have had.
google avatar

Thomas M.

Yelp
Very nice cakes, sweets and ambience but the service is just terrible. Very slow, very chaotic and unfriendly. It's just a farce. I don't know what's so difficult about getting the service right. I guess they don't care. I can recommend the take-a-way but the cafe is just a waste of time.
google avatar

Pamela S.

Yelp
The service felt a little stodgy, and there's all this construction going on right now next door that makes the location a bit of an eyesore at the moment, but I had the most delicious and satisfying 1/4 roast chicken in sauce with bread dumplings, and I think it also came with a little salad; it was the lunch special for the day.
google avatar

Jaina S.

Yelp
cons first: loads of tourists, waitstaff seems stressed out, and the pot of coffee we ordered had no lid, and was lukewarm (and downright cold for the second cup). pros: very convenient location (one block from Odeonsplatz Ubahn), and a short walk from the madness at Marienplatz. The cake we had was VERY good, moist and plenty of chocolate (as an American i often think the chocolate cake in Germany is too dry and not enough chocolate). in sum, if you are walking by and it's time for coffee & cake, this isn't a bad choice. next time i will send back the cold coffee though.

Carol W.

Yelp
Don't bother. More pomp than substance. Go in with low expectations, which is sad to say for a Michelin guide restaurant. Waiter asked me twice on my appetizer. Two table mates received their soups. Then two table mates received their entrees, then I received a salad which I had not ordered. Asked the waiter where my appetizer was and he grabbed the menu and I again pointed out the venison pie. He took the salad away and I again was sitting while others were eating. One of my tablemates asked to have the salad since it should now be tossed after being served. Still no appetizer. Finally received a venison terrine, poor translation for pie. Was charged for the inaccurate salad and the ridiculously late salad. Pity!

Liz H.

Yelp
Excellent eggs benedict, great bakery (brioche, croissant, bread) solid espresso. The service is speedy. The only false note was the waiter who told me, as he presented the machine to process my credit card, that "tips were not included in the check" - which is true of course, but in Germany, *service* is included in all the restaurant prices and checks. It felt like a very hard sell and borderline scammy in a place that is obviously at the higher end of the market.

Qype User (Lillyl…)

Yelp
Team could be more organized and perhaps a little bit more nice We made a reservation for 2 and we had to move twice thanks to 3 persons. Food is excellent. Brunch for 2 with coffee, tea and water = 50EUR

Yelp
I've been to Cafe Luitpold twice now, in my just over one month so far in Munich. the first time I stopped with my boyfriend on a whim for an eiskaffe. Since coming from Wien, I'd been looking for ANYWHERE in Munich that would serve me a yummy, cold coffee with delicious ice cream and wouldn't skimp on the whipped cream! Cafe Luitpold fit the bill! It was a pleasant surprise and I would visit again just for this. The second visit was just last weekend, when my daughter and I were searching for somewhere to have Sunday Brunch, and specifically, eggs benedict. What did we end up with? Two perfectly cooked eggs, with yummy, runny yolks, nestled lovingly atop perfectly soft yet crispy brioche and ham, blanketed with dreamy, buttery, hollandaise --- for Euro 7.50!!! As if the eiskaffe wasn't enough, I now have a go-to brunch spot as well!! I haven't tried any of the pastries yet, but everything looks fabulous and I will be back to try more things. Other diners around us had lovely looking breakfasts as well -- so I may be tempted to try something else on my next visit -- or I might just stick to the eggs benedict. ...we'll see....

Yelp
I can't even comment on the food as we were denied service. We were well aware they closed at 19:00, but just wanted a quick coffee and entered into the cafe at 18:35 along with another pair. There was still a handful of patrons leisurely eating and drinking. The other pair took a seat and were greeted by a server. It took another 5 minutes for someone to come to our table to which, after he discovered we spoke English, said they were closing in 15 minutes and he was not allowed to serve us. Yes, you heard me correctly, he was not allowed to serve us and yet the other couple was being helped. (He also exaggerated as they were closing in 21 minutes by that point.) Had I been home in the States and not exhausted the waiter would have received a verbal tirade for both work ethic and disrespect, but I just didn't have the energy to put up a fight and risk my drink being spit into. Maybe, I'm wrong, but I'm pretty sure closing at 19:00 doesn't mean no service for the 30 minutes prior so that the wait staff can leave promptly at 19:00.
