The Phenomenal Picnic Dining Spots of Philly | Eater Philly

"This bright and whimsical cafe, a few blocks from Franklin Square Park, is known for its vast assortment of Mediterranean fare. Take out something savory, like the shawarma sandwich or shashuka, or something sweet like the Nutella crepe or the baklava cheesecake to enjoy while you peruse the multitude of attractions at the park, such as the Chinese Lantern Festival, the merry-go-round, or a rousing game of mini-golf." - George Banks-Weston

I love this place. They have indoor and outdoor seating areas. The service is amazing, very helpful and friendly. Their coffee is really good I was pleasantly surprised, and their pastries are incredible!!! Ive tried the Nutella pastry and the double chocolate muffin - both amazing! I’ve also tried their goat cheese omelette and it was fantastic!

My bf and I stumbled upon this cafe while looking for a place to dine in while strolling the area. We ordered the Mediterranean shashuka and the shashuka chicken park sandwich. We were blown away from how delicious our meals were. Both meals were well seasoned and generously portioned. We’ll be sure to return in the near future!

Went here just because it looked good while walking outside, and it did not disappoint!! I ordered the Vegetable Shakshuka and Breakfast Quesadilla as well as a couple coffees and all of it was amazing! The food was fresh and the portion sizes were very generous! Left feeling so happy with everything I got! It’s now my new favorite cafe in town! Excited to try all the various things on the menu!

I absolutely love this place for breakfast or brunch and will be back again and again. The coffee was very fresh and you have a lot of flavors and options in coffee and food. The pesto omelet was very soft and flavors bursting with the side salad. The best thing was the banana croissant French toast, it was soooo good I didn’t want to finish it, it came with a side of fresh fruit. Its more self served here but small and quite place to enjoy breakfast. You must try it yourself! Prices were very reasonable.

I absolutely loved my time at Cafe Ole! I haven’t even left my parking spot yet and felt the need to yell about this lol. Been craving shakshuka. It’s fantastic here! I thought I didn’t like chai tea but I was being adventurous and ordered one anyway. AMAZING!! Guess what, I like chai now! lol. My visit was around 8am. The space was bustling with patrons and cafe noise but honestly I didn’t mind. Enjoyed my solo breakfast date and can’t wait to bring a friend. Plenty of indoor and outdoor seating. I had the vegetable shakshuka and vanilla chai with oat milk. I am sooo pleased and would definitely recommend! And the menu is so extensive, I’m happy to come and try so many things! Very happy that so many people left great reviews that led me here. Now I’m paying it forward! 🌟

-- A True Homey Escape -- This cafe feels like stepping into your own living room—comfy, cozy, and so inviting. The food? Absolutely amazing. Every bite tastes like it’s made with love, and the menu is full of tempting options. The coffee mugs, plates, and even the silverware make everything feel extra familiar. You won’t want to leave! The only thing to keep in mind: no pets allowed, but honestly, that’s the only downside to this perfect little spot.

It was one of the greatest shakshukas I ate in the US. The regular is very good, and the Marocon is fantastic. The bread that came with it was fresh and tasty.

Had the pleasure of stopping by Cafe Ole. Ask for Chloe because she’ll take wonderful care of you!! I highly recommend the Bagel Sandwich and the Oatmeal with milk. The house coffee is 10⭐️. One of my favorite places to come for the in-house made Cold Brew. Very reasonable in prices as well. Plenty of seating inside and even tables outside to enjoy the Neighborhood scene. I’m so glad a friend recommended this cute boutique cafe in Old City. You’ll be sure to fall in love with it too!!

Yelp
My friend and I stumbled upon this little gem while meandering the streets of Old City the day after running the Philly Marathon. She's vegan and I'm gluten and dairy free, so stumbling across a place that meets both our dietary restrictions was incredible. Even more incredible was the delicious food. So much so that I came back three weeks later with my daughter and got the same thing. The hummus is out of this world. I just scooped it up with my GF toast and then dipped it into the yolk of the eggs. So, so good. If you aren't super hungry you could definitely share as the portion is enough for two. The dirty chai was perfect. Not too heavy on the espresso and not too sweet. Just right. My daughter was amazed by the tiny glass bottle of Diet Coke. She's a pretty picky eater but she said it was the best avocado toast she'd ever eaten.... Like it was whipped avocado. Absolute perfection. A bustling little joint so I felt pretty lucky to be able to snag seats both times we were there.

Yelp
A great place to have a shakshuka! I usually get the regular but apparently the one over hummus is another variation to try according to my man. He usually gets the Moroccan style with the green olives and chicken m. I love the olives. I need to try the tuna sandwich but I keep ending up with the shakshuka when we eat in. The Nutella puff was delicious too. And normally I get a cafe au lait or latte when I'm in the mood

Yelp
Such a cute cafe in Old City! It has that casual coffee house vibe. Seating is available inside and outside. We were inside due to rainy weather. It was warm and cozy. The bagels were very good. My friend was able to get a hot milk drink. I had a chai tea latte. It was made very well. I appreciated the specialty foam design as tea drinkers don't always get this. The pastries all looked delicious! The server was very nice and welcoming!

Yelp
We really loved the food and service here. The staff was really friendly and helpful explaining the various options they've got for both food and drinks. They have a lot to choose from. The hummus veggie shakshuka was enormous and quite good. I think two people might be able to split an order, but this time we each ordered our own and walked away with leftovers. Their coffee was delicious and I really enjoyed my latte here. Lots of the other customers came in for coffee and other drinks, including some iced teas with fresh mint that looked quite nice. The restaurant has a cozy, loyal-local type vibe and is definitely worth a return visit,

Yelp
Lovely coffee shop with a big breakfast and lunch menu! Their spiced chai latte was tasty and creamy. I also ordered a breakfast wrap which comes with egg and cheese and two additional toppings--I did peppers and spinach. It was tasty with fluffy eggs! It was very busy but we were still able to find a table and the cashiers/baristas were fantastic at managing so many people and orders in a somewhat tight space. Its clear why it's popular

Yelp
First off, the food was excellent! Shakshuka is one of my favorite dishes, so I had to come in after checking the menu online. There were different options, including a vegan one, but I ordered the standard. The egg yolks were liquid when I cut into them. And the bread served with the dish was warm, dense, and slightly sweet. It balanced the rich tomato sauce well. I ordered a chai with my meal, and there were 5 different chai blends to choose from. I chose spiced chai, but a few of the others were raspberry chai and Mexican chocolate chai. I ordered at the counter and picked my food/drink up when it was ready as well. There's a dish station to leave dirty plates and cutlery. It gets busy inside, but there is adequate seating. The outside of the cafe is really cute, including touches of yellow that can be seen on the inside as well with those beautiful doors. Very quaint and clean, plus it's close to many historical sites, and within walking distance of Market Street.

Yelp
What a charming spot in the old city. Bright yellow colors and friendly service made Cafe Ole a favourite of during a recent trip. The Chai lattes were incredible! I especially loved the Vanilla Chai and the Spicy Chai. The prices are extremely fair as well! Big portions of delicious food. The brie sandwich and vegetable shaksuka were sooo good. I would make this a regular spot if I lived in town. Grab a table outside and enjoy all the people watching.

Yelp
Super friendly service and great food at this cozy little corner cafe in Old City. We both had French Toast. One gluten free and one regular. It's served with a generous portion of mixed fresh fruit. The drip coffee was excellent- served piping hot in a very large artistic ceramic mug. I can definitely recommend Cafe Olé for breakfast.

Yelp
My coworker and I planned to walk the Benjamin Franklin Bridge nearby and I really had to pee so we stopped here to use the restroom. I wanted to be a good person so I made a purchase to use the restroom. The workers were are rude and rough. I don't think they care for customers. They were rude to other customers, so I'm not special at all. There's a lot of serve yourself, grab it yourself, deal with it yourself over there. They took forever to take my order, but eventually I ordered a small iced Vanilla Latte with OatMilk ($4.50 + 0.75 + 0.75). Get the lid and straw yourself over there. Not shocked. What makes it worse?? THE DRINK WAS AWFUL. Should have just peed and left. Why do I have to go and be a good person. I literally threw the drink away at the bridge entrance so I don't get stuck holding a gross drink. From the other reviews, it sounds like their food is decent, but I can only speak to my awful encounter.

Yelp
Fantastic small Cafe with great hot drinks, breakfast foods, pastries. Service is excellent! Sunny decor, outside seating options.

Yelp
My partner and I came in on a Sunday morning. We ordered right away, got a table, and got our food pretty quickly. We shared the vegetable hummus shakshuka and it was the perfect amount for us. Shakshuka is sometimes too tomato forward (I know, I know) but it had really good flavor and the hummus cuts into the straight tomato flavor so I really enjoyed it. The veggies also gave it added texture and fun. Highly recommend for both shakshuka lovers and those who sometimes enjoy shakshuka!
google avatar

Jo L.

Yelp
Standard Shakshuka was good but too salty. Liked the egg in it. It came with two sesame rolls and some kind of spread that went well with the shakshuka. Was not bad hours later snacking on it after it has cooled off.

Yelp
Service was fast and food was hot! Had a small wait for a table. Cute little corner small place. Food was delicious and green ice tea was good. Nice community board with info.

Yelp
Although this has been a mainstay in Old City for a while, the coffee is not great. The servers are friendly and the saving grace is the location with views of 3rd street. Still I would recommend just for the good vibes.
google avatar

Phylicia H.

Yelp
I can't wait to come back here and next time try their shakshuka! Today I ordered the split pea soup which came with pita bread. It was delicious, creamy, soothing and something I would definitely order again. I also bought a matcha latte with almond milk and it hit the spot. Very well made! This place is busy! Dined inside and people constantly walking in and out to order. Great spot!

Katerina W.

Yelp
Couldn't get over the weird smell in this place. Not sure what it was but hard to eat in here
google avatar

Doron K.

Yelp
This is my spot. Always fresh good food and great coffe. The service is quick and friendly and if you go with a group everyone has something to eat. From gluten free to vegan vegetarian or meat eaters.

Yelp
This came as a recommendation on an article about spending one day in Philly and I'm so glad it did. I had the vegetable shakshuka and the flavor is unbelievable!! I was taken straight back to Europe with this!! Please try it!! My husband loved his goat cheese omelette and everything else was on point! I had an espresso which was also very comparable to my espresso experience in France. Excellent execution, freshness, and flavor. Food gains 5 stars. Service, ambiance, and cleanliness all gain 5 stars. The facility was clean, staff friendly and helpful but busy for sure, and regardless of the busy it was clean! Great job guys!! I hope you're around for many years to come and thank you to the owners for sharing your culture with us through your food!! It was lovely!!

Luisa E.

Yelp
Ok this place is a gem. The food is great, reasonable priced and served with a smile. The staff is super welcoming and really works hard to fulfill your order as quickly and accurately as possible. The stuffed croissant French toast is fire!!!! Thanks ladies for such a great meal. I wish I had tried this place soon.

Yelp
I was in Philly only for a week, and every morning while walking pass Ole, and could not resist the delicious smells from there. I tried their coffee right away( coffee nerd), and it was lovely so I was sure food would be great too, and when A friend of mine advised me that place has good for "breakfast shakshuka" I wanted to try it right away. Loved the Shakshuka Hummus breakfast, size is great for 2 people (huge plate with 3 eggs, lots of hummus, tomatoe paste and little bun) and also enjoyed the Salsa Omlette- it had lovely Brie cheese melted inside, which is bomb is you like cheese at all!side salad also reminded me of Greek food in a way. Waffles were alright, but than again, this place is popular for breakfast things like omlettes or shukas, and waffles are for boring people ...
google avatar

Yelp
I came here during a quick trip to Philly and wanted something warm on a cold, rainy day. The Moroccan Shakshuka did not disappoint! The dish was so flavorful and came with fluffy, melt-in-your-mouth freshly-baked bread to eat with the sauce. I also ordered a latte to drink - delicious! The portions were definitely large enough to take home some leftovers. Service was excellent! I recommend arriving earlier in the day or during off-mealtime hours to get a seat indoors.
google avatar

Michelle T.

Yelp
Love this local goodie!. The coffee is good, the food is good, the customer service is great. The shakshuka was excellent. I've also enjoyed brunch onsite here. Simply a perfect spot for good food, fair prices, quality service and local, chill vibes
google avatar

Leon J.

Yelp
Good light food in a relaxed atmosphere. It was crowded when we got there so pick your times carefully.
google avatar

Jen L.

Yelp
I ordered the baklava here and it was really disappointing. The layers tasted really stale for some reason, and not sure if it was the pastry, oil or butter, but something definitely tasted like it had gone bad. The filling was also far too sweet. I couldn't taste any of the nuttiness I look for in a baklava. Maybe I got a bad batch? On the plus side, each triangle ($3.95) was really large- definitely big enough to share. Unfortunately, neither my friend nor I wanted to finish it. Might be a good place to chill and do some work. I saw quite a few people with their laptops. Probably wouldn't be back for the food again.
google avatar

Renae D.

Yelp
I would like to give this place another try when I can take the time to dine in. We did a quick stop. It was fairly busy and people seemed eager to be there. We got two iced lattes with classic vanilla flavoring. It wasn't anything special for us. But it wasn't bad. We got the egg and cheese croissant. We did like the flavor of the sandwich and the croissant was nice and fresh.

Yelp
This review is a hard one to do. I'll start with all the positives: my husband and I stopped by for breakfast a day we were in the city. We were called in by the fun small coffee shop look. We both ordered lattes and they were truly one if the best lattes we both have ever had. I would definitely recommend Cafe Olé's coffee -- truly worth it. The staff was nice. The issue for us was in the food we ordered. Perhaps we just ordered the wrong things off the menu. Unfortunately the Pesto Omelette was one of the worst things I have ever tried. I don't even know how to explain it but the omelette was leaking of how wet it was, it tasted horrible. The omelette does have tomatoes inside but to me that still does not justify the taste and consistency. It felt like someone who had no idea how to make an omelette decided to try it for the first time and that came out. My husband got a stack of pancakes that were ok at best. Neither of us were able to finish our food because of how it tasted. Not to mention it was also very expensive (especially considering the quality). This definitely makes me sad because we wanted to find another wonderful breakfast place to eat in the city but this one was not it. Again, if we were walking by again we would definitely step in for their coffee.

Giovanna D.

Yelp
The food is delicious and the place is very pleasant despite being busy. The staff obviously has a lot to do (2 people and a full house) but still images to be courteous and efficient. 100% recommend them !
google avatar

Emma F.

Yelp
Nice cafe in Old City, good for working as they have free wifi and it is not too loud besides the lunch rush. I had an apple brie sandwich which came out toasted. The sandwich was a good blend of sweet and crunchy from the apples and cheesy from the brie.

Taylor C.

Yelp
5 stars isn't enough. My family and I were visiting for a few days for a funeral and this place was the closest to our Airbnb. After visiting the first day, we came back every single day. The food was amazing, the workers were so kind and even remembered my grandpa's order by the third day. They made these Philly natives feel at home again during a difficult time. Do yourself a favor and visit asap!

Yelp
Shoutout to our local community heroes! We loved the warmth and friendliness of this venue! We had a hard time deciding what to order because we were starving and wanted to try everything! Great Yelp reviews were like our red carpet to this venue! What an incredible experience! The lattes and chai tea was our first order of business on such a cold wet winter! We were greeted with warmth and then it continued to manifest in the food and service! The brisket SHAKSHUKA is epic ! We left the bowl as white and spotless as it could get after we gobbled up the savory awesomeness with the huge bread rolls! And then onto goat cheese on toasted sourdough! I'm so glad that my face has a big mouth! Better to eat these generous portions! Breakfast Potatoes are golden nuggets of pillowy goodness! Then the pesto omelette that covers half the plate! Some crispy Israeli salad, and yet another delicious roll! For a well rounded experience, we enjoyed a delicious crepe with fresh bananas and strawberries!!! But then we sampled the lentils- which was the delicious soup of the day! And had to take home for further research: beautiful baklava and a spinach cheese triangle! If you're into hot sauce: I highly recommend the homemade pepper sauce!!! A little goes a long way with this liquid gold!!! We left full of love and happiness! What an amazing place! Bravo!!

Bernardo M.

Yelp
Cozy ambiance great food, coffee and pastries. It can get pretty busy at certain times od the day.

Yelp
I came to Cafe Ole for brunch on a Sunday around 11:45am. We did not have a reservation but this place is pretty casual and you likely do not need one. This is a cute corner cafe in Old City with a lot of indoor seating and also several tables outside which are perfect to enjoy their food in the crisp fall air. They have a wide selection of breakfast items but they are really known for their shakshuka which is what I would suggest anyone orders. They have a bunch of different ones but we decided to get the Moroccan (it has chicken and feta) and the hummus shakshuka (not on the printed menu but you ask for it). You order at the counter and then wait for your food to be brought out to you which doesn't take longer than 10 minutes. Both shakshukas were very delicious. The portion sizes were really large and felt like a good bang for your buck- I was super full until like 7pm. The Moroccan shakshuka had generous amounts of chicken and came with three eggs and this deliciously spiced tomato stew. It is supposed to have some feta but I was not able to appreciate it as much. I ate most of the hummus shakshuka and it was so good! Also a very generous portion size and the creamy hummus on the sides was such a good addition to the tomatoes and silky eggs in the dish! Both dishes come with two bread rolls that were okay (not the best bread but the shakshuka is so good it kinda does not even matter), as well as a small side of labneh with olive oil and spices that is a good complement as well. This was such a cute, lowkey spot, I would come back again in a heartbeat for some high quality food, and nice, relaxed atmosphere.

Andy S.

Yelp
Great food. The Shakshuka is delicious. We had it two time dubstep vacation. The brisket and the vegetable Shakshuka. This is the first time we had Shakshuka. Everyone should try it. The servers are very nice. They are quick. Great atmosphere.

Yelp
Cafe Ole is still going strong. Coffee is good. They have traditional coffee and some silly sweet stuff like nutella lattes if you're feeling decadent. They have some very good Israeli/Middle Eastern food, like shakshuka and hummus. The breakfast sandwiches are good--I enjoyed the pressed egg-and-cheese sandwich on a croissant. Sidewalk seating is nice, and there's a comfortable, neighborhood feeling to the place. Lots of local regulars.

Yelp
This place is know for the shakshuka. The hummus shakshuka is to die for and is easily two meals. The sauce is so flavorful amd the dish comes with bread. Its the best shakshuka Ive ever had. Try all the others too.
google avatar

Alex W.

Yelp
My girlfriend took me to this restaurant and I loved the vibe of this small establishment. The customer service was phenomenal and 10/10 would recommend this place! The Boureka was amazing and so tasty! The Moroccan shakshuka was out of this world and the best I have ever had! If you are in Philadelphia, please give this restaurant a try!

Yelp
My mom and I stopped by Cafe Ole for breakfast on our last morning in Philadelphia a few weeks ago. My mom is vegan, and vegan breakfast dishes can be hard to come by. I appreciated that they had a vegan shakshuka option, so we decided to check it out! My mom enjoyed her vegan shakshuka (tofu instead of eggs). I also enjoyed my shakshuka - I got the hummus shakshuka (the standard shakshuka served over hummus), but I wish it was half the size it was! The shakshuka portions were enormous! The menu is an interesting blend of Middle Eastern/Israeli and American breakfast classics! The café is casual and comfortable (definitely seemed like a neighborhood spot where people stop by for a coffee and bagel/boureka/croissant on the way to work or work with a laptop for a few hours). The service wasn't super friendly, but it might have been due to its order at the counter system. Overall, it was a good breakfast, but go hungry or don't order the shakshuka (like two meals)!

Ellen A.

Yelp
The very best shishuka ! I've ever had ! I ca t wait to come back to Philadelphia again!
google avatar

Ali R.

Yelp
When the menu says "only the freshest ingredients" they mean ONLY THE FRESHEST INGREDIENTS!! The chicken mozzarella sandwich was deliciously perfect lol. My colleague and I both had it and could not stop raving. He also had the vegetable soup and would've licked the bowl if he could. The baklava and chocolate chip cookie were the perfect treat after we were all done. Funny enough, we were actually heading to another spot on the block and saw a crowd of people walking in so we decided , "hey this must be the spot!!!" Very VERY HAPPY we stopped in.

Nathaniel C.

Yelp
Their shakshuka dish is one of my favorite things to eat every now and then. The service is great and the outdoor seating is a great Philadelphia experience. Simply put, Cafe Ole is a staple of Old City.
google avatar

Kyle M.

Yelp
not very good. staff is indifferent at best. Caesar salad disappointing, nothing Caesar about it. read a recipe. it shouldnt have vinegarette, tomato or cucumber, and it should have croutons and a Caesar dressing . I don't know what this is, but is not even close to a Caesar salad. Not that it's bad, just change the name so your customers understand what they are getting. staff waits to make sure you tip, even though it's counter service. I'm a tipper, don't get me wrong, but I don't appreciate the pressure to tip a minimum of 18%.

Yelp
Came here for breakfast with friends, had the açaí bowl and an iced coffee - and was delicious!! Would recommend, and right in the heart of old city. Great spot!!

Yelp
A great option for a coffee or meal as the amazing eggs they prepared in different ways... One of my favorites in Phili...and very cool and friendly staff

Yelp
Never disappoints! The food is delicious and the service is great. It's a great neighborhood spot in old city.

Yelp
Had a great breakfast here. Was not sure what to order and went with french toast and an iced chai tea. The French toast was really good. It came with fresh fruit that my wife kept trying to steal because it was so good. The employees were very nice. You can tell it's a popular local spot as customers kept coming in to chat. We had no problem getting a seat. You order at the counter and then sit down. Again, the employees were really cool. I'm pretty sure they forgot my order at first but the employee noticed my wife had her food and asked me what I was missing and took care of it. She was real apologetic but I honestly had not noticed and did not think it was unusual that I had not gotten my food yet. I am glad the employees are so observant. Great experience. Great menu options, I'd definitely return

Orly C.

Yelp
I want to say it's pricey, but considering I can't leave Starbucks with a sh***y iced latte and a frozen breakfast sandwich for less than $12, it's worth the prices. This proudly Jewish-owned business is always busy in the mornings when I stop in for my coffee, and rightfully so. I see the same staff everyday, so I'm sure they enjoy working there-- they're always friendly and fast. Would definitely recommend the chicken quesadilla; it's huge! So before you walk a block over to Starbucks, don't; try this place out instead.

Mark C.

Yelp
Breakfast menu is outstanding try theshakshuka hummus veg, amazing, pancakes came with fresh ripe bana and strawberries just perfect l thoroughly enjoyed it all! Staff are terrific!

Bernie B.

Yelp
This is my absolute favorite kind of thing - cozy little corner cafe, Mediterranean food with lots of colorful vegetarian options. The food is decent. Sitting on the sidewalk is sort of ok, but you're a foot away from cars constantly whizzing by. I would give anything for this to be somewhere I actually wanted to spend time, but the interior is just more than I can handle. The cleaning chemicals they use are so strong I literally have to cross the street when I'm walking past this place, hours after it's closed. Sometimes I try to order to go, but I can barely get through ordering before the migraine sets in. It is relentlessly acrid. It seems like something they mop the floors with? Ironically, it's so dirty in there it just gives me the ick. Everything in sight is dirty -- the tables, the walls, the floors, the dirty wads of napkins wedged under the table legs, the floor mats. It doesn't help that the walls are painted in shades of baby poop brown, tangerine orange, and electric velveeta yellow. It seems somewhat more tolerable in the daytime. After dark, the harsh blue daylight fluorescent lightbulbs really highlight how dirty everything is and add to the migraine-inducing atmosphere.

Darryl T.

Yelp
Great food and friendly staff! Cafe is a good size and bright. If visiting Philly, stop by this cafe and relax during the mid-day.
