Cafe Pho Co – Hanoi, Vietnam - Gastro Obscura

"Cafe Pho Co, a coffee shop in Hanoi, takes the concept of hole-in-the-wall to a whole other level. Several levels up, in fact. To reach it, you must first walk through a clothing store, down a narrow hallway, then across a courtyard filled with birdcages, plants, and the occasional roaming chicken. Then, you’ll start ascending the stairs, up through what seems to be a home, past a family shrine and a portly ginger cat, and finally to the roof. You could sit on the floor below the roof, but then you wouldn’t get the same delightful views of the city, including the green expanse of Hoan Kiem Lake. Slide into one of the patio chairs and sip on cà phê trứng, also known as Vietnamese egg coffee, a popular style that adds a whisked egg and usually a heaping helping of sugar or condensed milk to Robusta coffee for a decadent, foamy effect. Chocolate fans should try the cacao trứng, which adds hot cocoa to the mix for rich, mocha flavors. If it’s hot out, the cafe serves iced versions of most of its brews, as well. You’ll place your order at one of the lower floors. While the service is known for being a little slow, that’s all the more reason to sit back and enjoy the view at this little space tucked away above all the bustle of the city below. AMAZING hidden gem. This place is nestled at the back of a sewing shop up a set of stairs. There are a few levels bf each is decorated beautifully with art and plants and antiques. If you go the top you get a fantastic view of the lake and over the city. It was so great we went twice in the 2 days we were in the city. Their salt and coconut coffee are amazing. It is a must see if you want a quaint quiet spot in Hanoi. Very reasonable prices for coffees too! Highly recommend!

This beautiful and unique café is tucked away at the back of a fabric shop; you have to walk through the shop and down a small alley to get to it. Although I wouldn’t say the coffee was my favorite compared to other places I’ve been to, and the fresh coconut water my boyfriend ordered was lukewarm, it’s still a lovely spot to enjoy a drink and take a break from the crowds of the busy Old Quarter.

Finding Cafe Pho Co is an adventure in itself, tucked away behind a "silkie handmade shop" and requiring a climb through a narrow alley and several flights of stairs that feel more like an antique shop. But this journey is undoubtedly part of its charm. Once you arrive, you're immediately immersed in an unforgettable experience. This cafe truly is a hidden gem, offering a perfect blend of rustic charm and breathtaking panoramic views. Perched high above, it often overlooks Hoan Kiem Lake and the surrounding ancient rooftops, providing an ideal escape from the city's hustle and bustle. The ambiance inside is wonderfully traditional and cozy, transporting you back in time with its old-world charm—it genuinely feels like stepping into a piece of Hanoi's history. And when it comes to the highly recommended egg coffee, you won't be disappointed. While many cafes in Hanoi offer this specialty, Cafe Pho Co's version stands out as one of the best in the city. Rich, creamy, and perfectly balanced, it's a must-try.

A "hidden gem" coffee shop, tucked inside a deep alley. It has interesting ancient decor, a good view of Hoan Kiem lake if you climb 3 flights of stairs up, however, the drinks were disappointing. The egg coffee wasn't rich and creamy and the coffee was rather bitter (perhaps over-roasted). Good view and decor, but mediocre drinks- would not recommend.

Absolutely stunning view of Hoan Kiem Lake, worth the effort of climbing to the top! Pork spring rolls were also delicious!

Decor is nice. Coffee nearly made me amputate my leg. Chocolate cake is store-bought. A touristy spot that needs no introduction. The mezzanine offers an outdoor al fresco feel, while the highest level (through the spiral stairs) brings you to an indoor space where it may be louder with more people. Overall, it's fine to go once to soak in the views, but personally, it's not my cup of coffee (pretty diabetic).

There’s a place in Hanoi—hidden behind a textile shop, past a narrow hallway—that feels like stepping into another world. The kind of place where time slows, and the air hums with something special. We ordered a salt coffee and an egg coffee, and that first sip? Game-changer. Creamy, rich, and just salty enough to keep it interesting. It set the bar for the rest of the trip. The courtyard? Pure magic. Old tiles underfoot, greenery crawling up weathered walls—it’s Vietnam distilled into a single place.

A Hidden Gem in the Heart of Hanoi’s Old Quarter! Café Phố Cổ is a unique spot that you shouldn’t miss when visiting Hanoi. While the entrance is a bit tricky to find (hidden behind a silk shop), this only adds to the charm of discovering this hidden gem. Once you reach the rooftop, you’ll be rewarded with a stunning view of Hoàn Kiếm Lake, especially in the morning or at sunset. The atmosphere is peaceful and nostalgic, providing a quiet escape from the bustling streets of the Old Quarter. The highlight of the café is definitely the egg coffee, which many say is one of the best in Vietnam—and I completely agree! The prices are reasonable considering the prime location and unique experience. If you’re looking for a café with breathtaking views, delicious drinks, and a relaxing ambiance, Café Phố Cổ is the perfect choice. Note: There are several flights of stairs to climb, but the view at the top is absolutely worth it!
