A Landmark Hotel Has Resurrected Its Mid-Century Indian Menu | Eater NY

"I learned that beginning around 1950 Café Pierre featured an Indian section on its menu; by the time Craig Claiborne updated his guide in 1968 he described the French fare that occupied most of the menu as “competent” while raving about the Indian food." - Robert Sietsema

We stayed at the hotel for a getaway. The food at Cafe Pierre was great. We tried a few local restaurants, and we preferred Cafe Pierre. There were a couple of times where what we received wasn't exactly what we ordered, but it was never something that ruined the meal. My husband had the skirt steak twice! He also stated that the rice and beans were great. I had ceviche for lunch one night and the Honey salmon w/ parmesan risotto another night for dinner. I do prefer my ceviche more finely chopped, but other than that, it was good. The honey salmon and risotto was EXCELLENT.

My wife and I are staying in the Double Tree hotel. We ate here 3 times the previous two days and tried to eat breakfast here this morning. This morning at first they told us to get the buffet because of only having one cook. After clearly stating we did not want the buffet we were told we could order from the menu but it would take a minimum of 30 minute wait for food. We left because of the server's attitude. I am glad this morning was not our first time at this restaurant. Our food and service were excellent for the first three visits. We will return to this restaurant on our next stay at the DoubleTree in two weeks. The Cuban empanadas were excellent the Cuban sandwich was excellent and the other items we ordered were also very good.

Google
Worse place to get food! We asked for the Caribbean salad and we got rotten lettuce, without dressing! We complain for the freshness but no body care..! Good location but terrible service..! Full disclosure, I let the Hilton hotel manager know about it but was told I’m sorry have a nice day..!

Jeff W.

Google
Food was very good, but the two times we eat there it seemed like it was the first day for the wait staff. Waited 30 minutes for drinks to be served the second time we went and place was not crowded

Pablo was one of the most impactful mixologist I've ever met. He is knowledgeable about not only drinks, but also the local spots to check out for your style of entertainment! We continued to frequent the bar in the hotel specifically to see Pablo throughout our visit to PR.

Google
Great experience at Cafe Pierre. The carne frita (fried pork chunks) were perfect. The ceviche was huge and amazing, and the skirt streak marinated in tamarind was awesome. Very good drinks, too. Reasonable prices for a hotel restaurant. Great staff, very friendly and professional. Would recommend.

Google
Excellent service, great food, I live nearby and still eat here because it's great

Google
Service has been top notch. Everyone is super nice and competent. For Hilton Gold and Diamond, you get $15 for breakfast only, which is enough for continental breakfast buffet. There is a full buffet for more, or you can order large portions of made to order items for $15-ish. While one may want to enjoy all the food options out there, this spot is excellent for a restaurant in a hotel.

Yelp
In San Juan for work and this restaurant is in the lobby of the Doubletree, so decided to stop and have some breakfast before we headed out for the day. They offer full breakfast menu as well as the option to choose the buffet. Seeing as I'm not a fan of buffets, I elected to order food off of the menu. I wasn't feeling very adventurous and only ordered the breakfast sliders, although they tasted great! The three sliders come paired with breakfast potatoes, but PR style. Lots of flavor with onions and peppers This restaurant is kept very clean and the ambiance is that of a normal hotel restaurant. The servers were wonderful and ready to help with whatever we needed. Of course the prices are going to be a bit steep as in one of the touristy parts of San Juan, so it was expected. Overall, two thumbs and two toes up for Cafe Pierre. Happy eating, my foodies! Bien Dia!

Yelp
A clutch hotel restaurant with a helpful and friendly staff. The mofongo w/ garlic sauce will satisfy your hunger in a pinch. Pro tip: Just put that garlic sauce on everything! The food is never a miss but the level of hit can differ from order to order. There's a daily happy hour with 2 for 1 drinks (liquor + chaser) for those evenings when you just want to chill. The pricing is a bit higher than other restaurants in the area but you are paying for convenience if you're staying at the hotel.

Yelp
The atmosphere for the hotel was great, easy going and relaxing after a long day. The recommendation is the Mac and truffle with pork. It was amazing, after trying the pasta and a few empanadas we had a great evening. Very caring staff with excellent attempt of not writing a large order down.

Yelp
Unfortunately the food is just satisfactory and I can see why they have 3 stars . The sandwich I ordered the Turkey Pierre had bacon that was not only cold but not even thoroughly cooked . But I hate to complain but I did tell our server and they took 10% off our bill . We had breakfast a few days ago I should have just listened to my gutt instinct and not go back for lunch . The people are sweet and friendly but the food was not fresh and hot like I would have liked it to be . Quality is a must especially when your in a quality hotel . I'm sure they will improve in time because giving discounts will not make customers return good food will .

Yelp
The food was great but the reviews are not lying about the service. I was in the restaurant for an hour and a half and an hour of that was just me waiting either for the food or the waitress. I also ordered a side of fries, which never came

Yelp
This restaurant is in the Hilton and it's so much better than your typical hotel restaurant. We had some Puerto Rican fare and also the juiciest blue cheese burger ever. One of the things that made coming here so cool was our server Maui, she was amazing. Super attentive, directed us as to the area and was just delightful overall. Sometimes when you go to very touristy areas, it's difficult to find people who are genuine in the service industry because they are so burnt out, which is understandable, but she was super engaged and treated everyone the same! 10/10 recommend

Yelp
For the 3 days that we were at the Doubletree, this was our breakfast spot. The space is sunny and pleasant, high-tops and regular tables, along with a bar, with some interesting wall decs. The breakfast buffet is kind of average, perhaps a cut above. I took plenty of pix! Service ranged pretty wildly, from "I don't really see you..." to caring, depending on your wait staff. I did not get the sense that the staff are well trained or motivated, and there really isn't much of a 'system' for the simple operation of a buffet breakfast - or they can be just short-staffed. At night, they offer a happy hour and a dinner menu, but we did not have the occasion to try what they are like at dinner time.

Yelp
Let me share our poolside lunch experience So, this is a 4 star hotel lacking in so many things it's ridiculous... but let's talk lunch... El Chinchorero Puerto Rico is waaaaay too salty and the Cuban sandwich super duper soggy. They can't seem to get it right, or don't really care too!

Yelp
This place, as I'm sure you already know, is inside the Double Tree San Juan. We had plans to sit by the pool but I wasn't sure if they would bring the food to us so we just ended up sitting at the bar. At the time of our patronage, there was a happy hour deal: 2 for 1 on dranks but don't get too excited, the drink sizes were tiny and about 80% ice. They tasted good tho and got me turnt. We also happened to be hungry so we took the opportunity to order some sundries off the menu. It is a rare occasion for me to turn out a pizza these days so we ordered the margherita pizza with rice and beans. We had a friend who happened to be visiting PR at the same time meet up with us and she is absolutely, head-over-heels obsessed with tostones and anything plantains so we ordered a side of those bad boys. The pizza was very disappointingly small. I was initially impressed with the price ($14) but it's not in any way, shape, or form normal pizza size. Think flatbread size. It should more appropriately be named "flat bread that resembles pizza". The rice and beans were very good, and considering its status as a side, generous quantity. The tostones were standard. This is a fine place to get a bite to eat at the hotel but I'd recommend saving one's appetite for another place in San Juan.

Yelp
Inside the doubletree hotel lobby its a bar and restaurant. The burgers were amazing! Especially the doubletree burger. The turkey wrap was also great! Staff was friendly.

Yelp
Very expensive and the food was ok. They charged me $4 for a mini yogurt. The service was good.

Yelp
Food is average for a hotel cafe, although the pigeon pea soup was excellent. The seared tuna was only so-so. The tuna was okay but much of the lettuce seemed a bit wilted. The chocolate brownie with ice cream was tasty but expensive at $11 for a small portion. Servers are friendly but food prep is very slow. It took more than a half hour for the flatbread pizza I ordered to arrive even though the restaurant was not very busy. However, the bartenders are both nice and fast. The Happy Hour includes certain well cocktails priced at 2 for 1. Not a bad deal.

Yelp
this place was awesome. I stayed in the hotel it is located in and the staff was super friendly and helpful. jose was absolutely amazing, gave us good advice and even made me a pina colada "the right way" or whatever .. doesn't matter because it was the best one i've had in my life.. I didn't get one elsewhere because i was afraid it couldn't compare!!! Jose really made my expierence so incredible and memorable !

Yelp
This restaurant is located within the Doubletree San Juan. I would say their lunch is average given the other options in the area. However, their breakfast cured a nasty hangover I had. I recommend their french toast. It comes with slivered almonds and a few berries. Sides were overpriced. $4 for maybe 5 slices of bacon.

Yelp
I stayed at the doubletree hotel, since I was in Puerto Rico for work, I took advantage of having this restaurant in the hotel. This is not a "must" have restaurant but it's not bad food. I wish there was more consistency in the food. I had the turkey Pierre sandwich which was ok, soft bread and great tostones but nothing special . Another day, I had the churrasco which was perfectly cooked, rice was ok and plantain chips were very crunchy. The iced tea tasted weird. Fruit was fresh. Another day, I had the grilled chicken and it was awful, very dry and a little burnt and the vegetables were flavorless. The staff are super welcoming, very professional and fast.

Christopher H.

Yelp
Do not eat here for lunch or dinner! They do not know how to properly cook their meat. We got an over cooked salmon and undercooked chicken. They did not offer to comp us the meal or anything. No customer service.

Jules A.

Yelp
After an amazing night's sleep, I headed down to Cafe Pierre for breakfast and was met with a BEAUTIFUL buffet, a clean restaurant and a very friendly and attentive staff. My omelette was delicious, the buffet offerings were fresh and consistently refreshed, the coffee was out of this world and the service was such a welcome treat. Thanks DoubleTree and Cafe Pierre! I will be back!

Yelp
This cafe is inside of a hotel and as far as hotel food goes it's pretty good. The breakfast is better than you'll get in most restaurants.

John L.

Yelp
Although the service is awful, really slow and inattentive, if you are not in a hurry, the breakfast is good. I particularly like the garden omelette, but they have a number of options including a good looking buffet.

Yelp
I came to the bar, they had only six persons (including myself) there. I had to wait 15 minutes before the bar tender said hi to me. Maybe I looked poor, but this is not the way to treat customers, specially since this restaurant is in a hilton property where I tend to stay. This kind of services really makes me mad and disappointed. At the end, the drinks where ok.

Anne R.

Yelp
HORRIBLE customer service. Gave my order to another table. Failed to tell me. Waited for 30 minutes and they refused to give a refund. Wait staff and manager were rude and lacked any customer service skills. Worst place I've been to in San Juan.

Dynamic D.

Yelp
We ordered from here because we are staying in the attached hotel... the food was not good. The rice was hard and the salmon was over salted. We also had 2 pina colada's and they were okay but not the best

Yelp
Quiet hotel atmosphere, good food, and good service. We started dinner with 2 for 1 happy hour mojitos, They were mixed well, but could have taken a bit more rum, and at $11 regular price, we were glad it was happy hour. As an appetizer we had the "Cuban cigars," fried egg rolls with pork, ham, pickles, and cheese, with a honey mustard dip. These were awesome and our favorite part of the meal. For the main course I had the Double Tree burger with bacon, Gouda cheese, and guava barbecue sauce. The flavors worked well and the burger itself was very thick but not quite as juicy as I would have liked. It was a little difficult to eat because it was so tall but worth the price and could satisfy anyone's hunger. My wife had the seared tuna salad. It was cooked right, just the right size, and had a unique cinnamon flavored crust. All in all a decent dinner and we'll probably return to try some other items.

Kelsey L.

Yelp
Great breakfast and really good half price deals on beer and house rum drinks every night 5-8pm.

John V.

Yelp
The service here is second to none and the food not far behind. Karla is a great waitress and very attentive. Previous reviews complain about the time it took but everywhere you go it's a little slower because you are on island time so if your in that much of a hurry go back to the mainland. The breakfast pizza is unbelievable

Ana D.

Yelp
By far best ceviche de pescado I've had in a while! So juicy and refreshing. I'd come back to this hotel just for the ceviche. The service is great as well, attentive and friendly. Great food and amnesties.

Ben S.

Yelp
The food here is ok but the service is really slow. I waited about 45 minutes to get a sandwich and salad.
