The Best Places to Eat and Drink in Downtown Berkeley | Eater SF

"This bustling, colorful restaurant serves many dishes from El Salvador, but it’s hard to not order the cheesy pupusas. The $11.50 combo plates offer a great deal, delivering you both pupusas and a choice of sides like sweet plantains, an avocado salad, or a chicken tamale." - Janelle Bitker

Google
Food took about half an hour but tasted delicious! Small little restaurant. Authentic taste. Service was mediocre. Parking is horrible! Prices are decent.

Google

Google
This place has THE BEST pupusas I have ever had!!! And I'm super picky with my pupusas. I'm glad I found this place, and it's conveniently at a walking distance from my home. They have really great customer service. You walk in, they greet you, they take your order and they're so nice!! I love this place and I LOVE their salsa!!!! They also have so many varieties on their menu. As a matter of fact, I'm headed over there right now haha.

Google
Food is really good, I’ve been here a couple times now , it never disappoints I always end up ordering more than what I can eat because everything looks yummy.

Google
They don't have what you asked for if you asked for ice they sale to you and you pay for the cup to I don't recommend it.las pupusas taste is different .

Google
This one has a half Salvadorean half Mexican menue, and it leans a bit more towards Mexican. Still, great pupusas and pastelitos. I prefer the Berkeley location, but the service was great too. They're very friendly and attentive.

Google
Good food but very long wait time even if there is only a few persons in the line. You guys should remove the ice cream from the people's view if you are not allowed to sell it, kids got disappointed very much.

Yelp
Don't let the location for you. Some of the best pupusas I've ever had (and I have had my fair share). Cooked to having a soft center. The masa (corn flour) complements the other flavors without overpowering them. I am not a big believer in perfection, but the way these were cooked came damn close. And this was just the main dish. The cabbage salad, (curtido) that accompanied it was solid as well. Crisp, fresh with the proper acidity. I will be back.

Yelp
I ordered for pickup and the food was ready so quick (~15min)! Customer service was on point and the food was great. I prefer pupusas that aren't overly greasy and these were not, AND all the ingredients had so much flavor. I got revueltas and queso lorocos and they were perfect, super authentic. I also got platanos and those were super sweet and a little greasy, but that's the way I like them. Overall super authentic and a great price, can't wait to try the other salvi classics here

Yelp

Yelp
Fast service and good food. I ordered a plate of plátanos and replaced the beans with casamiento for a reminder of El Salvador . It tasted like they may have used Mexican crema instead of Salvadoran (so the taste there was missing) but overall the plátano plate was good. I also ordered 6 pupusas. They don't have rice flour but the pupusas tasted good overall. What really made everything for me is that my entire order was only $25 and some change! That's for 6 pupusas and a plátano plate! Super affordable, especially when compared to pupuserias in Berkeley or San Francisco. I'll def be coming back soon

Yelp
I first heard of Platano restaurant in Berkeley so when I saw this location I knew I had to stop by. The woman were extremely kind!! I ordered some pupusas de queso y frijoles, yum! Not only did they make them then and there on the spot but they were so delicious! I didn't notice that I had walked in and sat at the table about 10 minutes before closing but they did not mind. I ate my food and they kindly allowed me to stay until I finished. I look forward to visiting again!

Yelp
Pupusasssss. Beware, if you stay in to wait, you will exit smelling like pupusas and all the food. I got the cheese/bean pupusa. The salad was delicious (curtido) and the red sauce was also sooo yummy. This was a HEARTY pupusa. I just was in love and so happy I tried one of these as a snack. Very delicious and filling!

Yelp
It's been a while since I reviewed but I will for pupusas! You know the pupusas must be amazing when the entire menu is in Spanish. I was super craving pupusas when I picked up my husband from the airport and am so glad we drove out here. I had the bean and cheese and cheese and vegetables ones while my hubby had the pork ones. Sooo tasty, they're made so fresh too. And couldn't get enough of the fresh slaw and sauce. The mango jugo were real tasty too. You can tell that was fresh as well. Its a small hole in the wall, unpretentious shop so you can easily miss it when you're driving by. And it closes early at 7 pm so get here early for dinner!

Brandi M.

Yelp
Finally found a pupusa spot I love outside of SF! Pupusas were super flavorful with just the right amount of masa and filling. They give you an actual cup full of curtido and salsa instead of those little twist bags like other places which is nice. Platanos were perfectly cooked and the staff was really nice, I'd come back again.

Yelp
I love this place. I used to go to the one in Berkeley because I was working in the city, but due to shelter in place this one is closer to me. I wanted pupusas and platanos con crema y frijoles and this place did NOT disappoint! They are the friendliest people first of all, which is so wonderful especially in times like this where often times it feels we are so divided. Their pupusas are so, so good. My favorite is the revueltas con frijoles, but honestly I am sure you can't go wrong no matter which you get. Their platanos con crema y frijoles are to die for. My mouth waters every time I think of it. To top it off, their prices are extremely fair and I got more than I could eat for less than $30. I will definitely keep coming here to support local business, and to get delicious food! FYI, currently they seem to be closing around 5:30pm rather than 7pm. When I was there the other day they said they close around 5:30 now.

Yelp
Sooooo good. I think maybe the best papusa I have ever had. I was in the neighborhood and decided to just stop in and get a quick bite. The pupusa was made in front of me and put on the grill, which is a first (usually they are pre-made). I got the bean and cheese. It was scrumptious, and the curtido was excellent. I paid under $3.00 for it! Yes, there was a blaring TV in the corner, but that just adds to the atmosphere. You can always get it to go. My Spanish is not great, but we managed just fine. Staff was very polite, sweet and kind. Decor very simple- nothing fancy, but everything was clean. I will wait for food that is made to order anytime over food that is pre-made.

Yelp
Delicious food and super friendly service!!! It was simple to find parking and once inside, we were quick to be served. The staff was extremely friendly and patient with me the entire time. I ordered 1 Pupusa de pollo, 1 pupusa de frijole y queso and the plátanos con crema. All of which were out of this worlddddd!!!! The food was hot and fresh and for a fair price! If you are unsure of what to eat when in Oakland and youu want a casual place that serves delicious and fresh food- this is IT! This is going too be one of those "must have" restaurants for when I am in Oakland!

Yelp
Cafe Platano 2 offers mexican & salvadorean food as well as a an array of mexican soda fountain specialities: nieves, raspadoes, smoothies, et al. eats: Filetes de Pescados a la diabla (8.95) -very flavorful hot diabla sauce over bland tasting fish (frozen, no doubt) -rice, refried beans, and flour flortiallas makes it filling. above average fare. footnotes: -the ice cream here is "crystal" not mexican. -food made to order, no steam table. -parking not good around here. .

Yelp
It's a little hole in the wall spot. The woman there are handling the business. Great spot to get magonadas and a plate of platanos con creama y frijoles. Their platano plate is a must And is exactly what I ordered. The horchata is too sweet and powdery. so skip it. But please have some pupusas. Approximately 3$pupusas, BiG. I can only eat two! Not my favorite because I wish they added more LoRoCo to my veggie pupusa, but still yummy. Their bean and cheese pupusas are better. So now about their curtido (pickled cabbage salad). This is meant to go on top of your pupusas, and I love the stuff. Everyone likes their curtido differently. I like mine shredded for optimal consumption and very seasoned and dripping in liquid. Their curtido was not that, but still enjoyable. they did give plenty, some places are so stingy with it. And they gave me a whole bottle of their red sauce.

Yelp
My boyfriend and I came here yesterday to celebrate our anniversary with my mom. It was honestly the best experience we could have had -- the people here are so, so incredibly nice and the food was delicious. A must-try is the Pescado Frito... I think I'll crave that fish for the rest of my life (or at least, until I come back)! The portions are super generous and the price of everything didn't hurt our pockets despite ordering much more than we needed! Right now, it is cash only, though -- it wasn't a problem considering they were more than happy to direct us to an ATM at a gas station within walking distance. We were really pleased with our experience here and I can't wait to come back. If you're thinking of giving this place a shot, don't hesitate!

Flor M.

Yelp
Love their pupusas and the general vibe of this place. My mom and I have always felt welcome here. The pupusas are very big. I like that you get a jar full of curtido and your own salsa, it's a nice touch.

Yelp
This place is amazing! Extremely authentic pupusas, hand-made fresh. I recommend the chicken, cheese and beans. Very friendly service and comes with all the fixin's. Also highly recommend the platanos con lechera. First time having it and it is an amazing end of meal dessert. Will be back.

Yelp
I'm overlooking the inept cashier. My total came to $13.08. I gave her a $20 and a dime. For change she first gives me 92 cents and $11. Then she takes back the ten and gives me a five. I try several times to remind her I gave her a dime. She calls over someone else and I finally get the correct change and she acts like I was trying to pull something not apologizing for being wrong. Never mind all that though. The food is good. In a sea of many restaurants offering very generic Mexican food Platanos Cafe stands out. They offer tradition Mexican fare but also feature Salvadorean specialties. I had the platanos with crema - they are served with red beans. I also had two rice pupusas with cheese and locro. The were served with a mild salsa and delicious curtido in a big crock. All wonderful. I also tried the liquado de nopales. I loved that they had it but it was not great tasting. Next time I'll see if they can mix it with piña.

Yelp
There are. Be carefull most of the employees don't speak english . First serve Latinos ,after American and after... And if you come you can wait at the counter for sometimes whithout reason. They just say"welcome"perhaps don't know The meaning" And if you go to the restroom you can found You locked in the restaurant when you comeback . Feliz.... No mas! Denis

Yelp
I went in to (Saturday) at about 1:30 bad the place was empty. Having read the Yelp reviews I was a little surprised. I ordered the pupusa and tamales to go. The order took over 20 minutes to receive. Once I got home I found that they had burned all of the tamales and one of the pupusas. How do you even burn a tamale? I mean you steam tamales right? The tamales were incredibly dry, my daughter wouldn't even eat half of one. The pupusas were not bad, could have been better. And the woman behind the counter was rude when o inquired about our order. This place is about to close. Many other good places for pupusas and tamales. I suggest you try one of those.

Yelp
Delicious cheap pupusas. Everything made to order. The place is clean and staff is nice. Menu is in Spanish but some of the employees speak English and translate if you need. I saw a kid get an order of fries smothered in chorizo and cheese. I didn't see it on the menu so have to find out what that is! The place is on busy International so parking sucks.

Yelp
They take to long now at first they were fast it seems like they dont have enough workers

Yelp
I was looking for some really good pupusas and that is exactly what I found. The service was like any service should be, polite and enthusiastic. When we got there we were first in line and attended quickly. After a few minutes we were served the pupusas, salsa and a generous amount of the traditional pickled cabbage mix. Aside from this they had their own salsa bar with a lot of variety. The pupusas were hot, very cheesy and tasted authentic. After the pupusas we went outside and bought a mangoneada. It was delicious! The overall experience was pleasant. We will definitely be returning for the pupusas.

Yelp
This place is really authentic Salvadoran food. Many restaurant in the area but they all sell almost the same thing this place is different. If you are craving good food come here you won't regret it.

Yelp
This place is labeled as open at 9am on yelp, but they really open at 10....anyway I called in to make an order for pick up and the lady who answered was so friendly. She took my order before they opened and told me to just knock when I get there...thank you so much I needed the food for my nieces presentation at school and no other place that made popusas was open until 10 or after. The food was delicious also!!!! Will be coming back to actually sit in and eat.

Yelp
This place has delicious food! And if you feel so entitled to dictate what language the employees should be speaking, I suggest you go to chevys, I'm sure you'll feel more comfortable there. I'll be going back there for my 10th time tonight to fill up on some food.

Yelp
I walked in with the impression that it will be just as beautiful as the one in Berkeley on University Ave. Unfortunately inside the restaurant it wasn't that nice and deluxe but the food was great though. I loved the Pupilas they had and I think they might be the best in the area. Definitely the best place in the Fruitvale area for authentic Salvadoran food. I wish I had known about it before as it is very close to my house. The only really down side to it though is that it took quite a while to have the food ready and there was very little distraction or chips in the mean time other than a tv playing Spanish novelas. Really good spot for the neighborhood I seriously wish they had better restaurants to compete in the future.

Yelp
I'm already a faithful customer at the Berkeley location, so I was excited to find out they were opening a new location not far from home. Did not know what to expect since I noticed they were also offering Mexican cuisine s well. Went for lunch on a Saturday , and the first thing I noticed was that this location was nothing like Berkeley in appearance. There is no table service and it was very small, kind of a hole in the wall spot if you know what i mean. I was skeptical that the food would taste the same. i went ahead and ordered my usual plantains with beans and sour cream with a pork, bean & cheese pupusa. As I waited at a table for my food my hopes of having the same tasty meal grew as a saw the homemade hot sauce and curtido was the same as the Berkeley location. When my food arrived i was relived it looked and tasted just as good as i remembered. Will be back to get my pupusa fix, but will continue to go to the Berkeley location when I want a sit down meal. A good solid four stars only because of the atmosphere and my doubts on how clean this location is.
