The Best Breakfast Restaurants in New Orleans | Eater New Orleans

"A cozy cafe known for its French toast, Cafe Porche combines two New Orleans pastimes: breakfast and sno-balls. It’s only open on weekends, making it a hot ticket, but a visit to this spot is a memorable one — speak to anyone who’s been for breakfast or brunch and they’ll gush about the restaurant’s warmth, friendliness, and overall quality. Choose from a few breakfast classics with the choice of bacon or smoked sausage, and keep an eye out for specials. Beyond the service, the super-thick, fluffy French toast topped with strawberries, bananas, and blueberries keeps people coming back weekend after weekend." - Beth D’Addono

Edit! Loved it so much we came back again! Same great service and food was delicious as ever! You Should Eat Here! Small business with great food and service! Ordered the Lakeview with the grilled catfish - perfectly cooked. Had a fruit bowl as a side, and it had a great selection and all perfectly ripe. The staff were courteous, attentive, and very friendly. The owner was working on a new coldbrew recipe and asked for our opinions on flavor. As coffee lovers, we thought it was perfect 👌🏼. I would definitely come again!

Google
Excellent little Cafe! Very friendly staff. The service was great. Just a short walk off of St. Charles, nestled in between homes. It's worth the short trip away from the main crowd. The French toast was beautiful and tasted great. The breakfast foods were cooked to perfection. There's seating inside and outside on the patio.

I am so glad my sister found this cafe and that we decided to come have brunch. Everything we ordered was absolutely delicious and quality food. Shrimp and grits were cooked perfectly and my French toast was one of the best ones I’ve ever had. The fruit was so fresh too. All the coffee drinks we ordered were sooo good and made picture perfect. Cannot say enough about how genuine the atmosphere and service was as well. Everyone was so nice, accommodating, and we had great conversation with some of the staff! I would 100% come back and I would recommend this spot to anyone visiting NOLA. It’s worth it to come here, trust me! A hidden gem!

Google
This is honestly the best breakfast/brunch place I have ever been. Typically I don’t do breakfast because I think it is a waste of money and time. However my mind has completely change with this gem. I have never had French toast like this before in my life. It was sweet clouds of pure heaven made by their own in house baker. The grits was divine. The owner and staff were absolutely lovely and gracious. If I could do only one brunch place for the rest of my life, it would be this place. I wish I lived closer.

Google
A Phenomenal Eatery! If you’re driving here DRIVE SLOWLY! It is tucked away in the back. Google WILL have you pass it. The food is Exceptional and Tasty! The Hospitality is felt and welcoming. I 110% highly recommend “Cafe Porche & Snowbar”. Best Wishes you have earned a returning client!❤️

Google
Absolutely wonderful lunch experience at Cafe Porche & Snowbar! The gumbo was absolutely delicious – every dish was clearly made with care. Beyond the fantastic food, the service was great, and what really made our visit special was when the chef personally came out to thank us for letting her cook for us. That personal touch truly elevated the experience. Highly recommend this spot for a delicious meal and excellent hospitality!

Google
I just went to Café Porsche and snow bar and the service/food was phenomenal!!! Miss Porsche herself was serving me and my girlfriend at our table, and we ordered the shrimp and grits, a mimosa pitcher, and the Carol b Bell. All of it was phenomenal 10 out of 10!!!! If you are in New Orleans 🪅, this should be your spot for breakfast, the million dollar wake up is the best coffee i have had in a long time!’

Google
The lattes' (French toast, Nell & Regular) were all wonderful. I had the French toast, delicious, wife has the avocado toast, brother had & Kids said it was Yummy!

Yelp
I am visiting for California and found this place on my way to my Garden District walking tour. The food, service and ambiance was absolutely amazing!! The restaurant is tucked away in a residential area which is a nice change from the choas of bourbon street/the french quarter. I had the fried catfish which was beautifully cooked and presented! The spicy sausage and smoked sausage were absolutely amazing!! They even do fried grits. I was also able to purchase a coloring book filled with images of NOLA! The author was also willing to sign it for me! The food and the coloring book are worth the walk from Canal street!

Yelp
Really great food, not too salty except for the BBQ shrimp. Portion size is medium size but not like the Texas sizes. Service is great. The place is a little tight prob could fit 25 people inside and more outside.

Yelp
We came here for our first time to NOLA. It was conveniently close to our Airbnb. Everything tasted amazing. We ordered the shrimp and grits. They came out super fresh and had so much flavor. Everyone was super friendly and accommodating. 10/10 recommend this spot!

Yelp
this was the best experience everrr! we sat outside in the patio area, which was so relaxing. everything was amazing, you literally cannot go wrong with anything you order! we enjoyed all of our food. we ordered a tequila sunrise mimosa carafe, there were 4 of us and we each had 2 drinks from it, it was yummy & the perfect amount of sweet and not too strong. i had the shrimp and grits which was delicious, i'm normally more partial to a cream based gravy with my shrimp and grits but this was still so good! you'll love it! perfectly creamy grits and tasty shrimp in a light flavorful gravy! same goes for the pork chop and grits! also we had a lovely conversation with the owner, ms. porche. she served us herself and has a beautiful energy! she was such a bright light in our day! if you're visiting new orleans definitely make sure you stop by and visit her!

Yelp
Such a wonderful place owned and operated by the sweetest woman. Great coffee and food. The shrimp and grits were so yummy and flavorful. Cornella is absolutely lovely and offered great conversation. What welcoming and friendly environment! We will be coming back :)

Yelp
This place deserves every 5 star review! I came with a group of 7 women on Sunday afternoon, and we all absolutely loved it here! The owner, Coronella, was incredibly warm and welcoming, and all of the food was delicious! The shrimp and grits are the perfect portion and so savory and comforting. I LOVED my drink, the million dollar wake-up. Come here immediately!
google avatar

Yelp
We had the fried shrimp and grits and the Lakeview. Everything was delicious catfish and shrimp were cooked perfectly! The place is super cute and the wait staff is really nice. I would definitely recommend eating here. Keep in mind it's a very small place. They have six tables inside and several outside. So if you plan on coming during an event, weekend make sure you stop by, but no, it's a small place.

Yelp
It was literally EVERYTHING about this place that brought on these 5 Stars! Just walking up to Cafe Porche I felt right at home! Walking in... I felt a sense of belonging... from the owners welcoming smile to the ambience! The food... ate it ALL! It was an experience! Ate the food so quickly did not get a chance to take a picture. Just stop in... you won't regret it! You will thank me!

Yelp
Yummy! Friendly! Cozy! Quiet! Off the beaten path which I LOVE! The grits are creamy and spicy without being !

Yelp
Awesome spot for Easter brunch, friendly service, high quality ingredients. We sat on the patio and it was spacious and casual and we enjoyed the shade. All 4 of our kids loved it and we got to meet the owner. We would love to come back again! Very welcoming space.

Ellek S.

Yelp
The food was incredible! The service was amazing and we enjoyed our time here. They were very accommodating to our large group. Thank you endlessly!

Yelp
This place is such a breath of fresh air. Owner is lovely and creates a personal touch. Food crazy good and well balanced drinks. Got the fried grits with shrimp and I wanted to lick the plate !

Yelp
Visited Cafe Porche on a Saturday morning. There is plenty of free street parking and it is close to the Muses apartments. One enters through a gate and the snowball stand is in the front of the property and the entry to the cafe is in the back. There was not a lot of seating but it was just the two of us. We ordered the Lakeview morning and the Carol B fried grits with shrimp. It was rollin'! The cream sauce was so good. Our server was not so attentive but I think that she was just a substitute for the actual server that was helping out in the snowball area. The new server was more of a people person. An older lady came to our table and thanked us for our patience even though the wait was not that long. If you know me, you know I had to order a wedding cake snowball to-go! They put condensed milk on top. The ice was crunchy but the juice was good. Overall, I would return.

Yelp
I truly cannot say enough good things about this place. We were only in New Orleans for 3 days and we went twice. Where to even start? THE FOOD Everything we had was phenomenal! Grits, red beans & rice, iced latte, shrimp on grits, and even the mimosa was somehow better than the usual. And, oh my god, the french toast. It was so good, I didn't even put butter, syrup, or anything on it. And pricing was so reasonable! I think they could charge more for the quality they're delivering. THE STAFF Some of the kindest folks I've ever met. I had flown into NOLA with my 1 year old ahead of my husband because of a work thing. So, it was just us when we went in for brunch the first time. They immediately came to the table to help me set up a high chair and brought over some grits without even requesting. (If you're a parent, you know getting food to the table quickly is the key to a peaceful meal.) She had her first ever grits and was a big fan. When it was time to leave, and I was visibly struggling with cleaning up and getting my little one to not jump out of the chair, the host insisted that I leave the mess (it wasn't a ton but enough that I felt I should pick it up, not staff) and then bounced my daughter around while I gathered all our things. I don't even think my family/friends are this helpful when out with my kid. THE VIBE Ya know, the structure itself isn't anything to write home about - cute outside sitting space, a bit small inside - but it just had warm vibes due to the staff and owner. You could tell that good hearts work here and the 'everyone here is family' vibe permeated the space. FOR PARENTS: Usually, I include a section in my review for parents commenting on space for strollers, changing tables, etc. I can't remember if there's a changing table, I know it was a tight squeeze inside with a stroller but I would still call this place 'family-friendly' because of the staff. If you came in with a stroller that's too big, they're not giving you side eye - they're welcoming you in and seeing if they can find a place for it to be stored while you sit and stay a while. I hope to be back in NOLA soon to be able to swing by Cafe Porche & snowbar.

Yelp
We absolutely loved our brunch here, so delicious, the staff so kind and thoughtful, we also love both their indoor and outdoor seating. We had an extremely delicious french toast and catfish with eggs, grits and biscuit. Such a delightful family run dining experience!!

Yelp
The owner was a delight, the service was amazing! The food was delicious! Definitely a perfect breakfast spot, everything that made table had was perfect!

Yelp
Just go here -- trust me. Food was amazing, service was so kind, dog friendly patio. 10/10

Yelp
The vibes is nice. Lovely environment. The main host is so sweet and love her vibe. She was proactive and made sure that we had a seat even though it was so pack. Getting our food was pretty slow. The fried grit and shrimp was not worth the hype. The batter taster wear and left a bad aftertaste in mouth when we left. They didn't give us enough sauce or shrimps for it. The flying Dutchman was small. The meat tasted weird and the bread was just buttered on. The shrimp and catfish tasted off like it was not fresh. Ending on a positive note! The french toast was amazing! It was fluffy and tasted good. The only problem was that we ordered 3 and they forgot to put blueberries on one. Overall, i see a lot of potential for this place. :)

Yelp
This restaurant is truly a hidden gem. It was a bit difficult to locate with the Snowbar being in the front of the property our Uber had to circle the block before we realized we passed it. However, it was worth the spin around the block and short drive outside of the touristy area. I had two breakfast plates, that how good it was. The smothered porkchop reminded me of my childhood. My only regret was not getting it over rice, I ordered it with grits and it was good. I also had fried catfish with eggs and a biscuit. All were to die for and as you can imagine after eating two full breakfast plates I did not need to eat for the rest of the day. I also had coffee and a mimosa, both were good and if I hadn't had two plates I would've had room for more mimosas lol. Visit this restaurant the next time you're in NOLA, you will not be disappointed.

Susan D.

Yelp
What a delicious breakfast we had there today! Everything we ordered was wonderful. And the woman who served us (may have been the owner) couldn't have more welcoming and gracious! A little hard to notice - set back from the street a bit. Wish they'd put a sign out by the sidewalk. Plenty of street parking available.
google avatar

Theresa K.

Yelp
The food was amazing and service was good. I never heard of fried grits before so I just had to try it. My order was fried grits, side of catfish (fried to perfection), and pitcher of mimosas. I'll for sure be going back.

Yelp
So much love for this place and Tanya & Arvani! (did I spell those right?) I've never felt so welcome, and like one of the family in a restaurant before! The first time we came we were a large group of 7 and we were immediately sat. Arvani killed it on the espresso machine, making us all delicious lattes, while Tanya took care of us at the table and made sure we left a little tipsy from the mimosas and with happy tummies from the delicious food. I came back a couple days later with one other and had just as enjoyable of a time as the first. 1000/10, come eat here and have no regrets. Looking forward to visiting next time. Thank you ladies!

Jacob G.

Yelp
Such a quaint and lovely spot with a beautiful indoor and outdoor setting. Don't miss your chance to support this business and you'll see why there are so many 5 star reviews. I ordered the fried catfish breakfast option and it was immaculate. The service was respectable and you can tell the owner loves what she does and it shows in the service and in the food.

Yelp
The food was amazing!!! So flavorful! My grandfather was a French man from edgard, LA!! He made the BEST liver and grits.... Nobody could perfect it like him!!! But this place..... this place did! I was soooo happy. He passed away so I don't get it from him anymore but this place will now always have a little spot in my heart! Definitely recommend! Only gave it a 4 because the drink menu was super small for brunch and outside needed a little music! Ohh also you can bring dogs for outside dinning only

Yelp
Today was my first time visiting. I've been trying to get here for quite some time. I arrived around 1pm and was surprised that it wasn't crowded (perfect timing). As soon as I walked in, I was greeted. All of the staff was very pleasant. I believe it was the owner who I met and he mentioned how I could have visited any restaurant but chose Cafe Porche. I felt that was very personable. I ordered the Good Morning Sweetness with fried catfish. The food was very delicious. When I received my check my bill was $17 and some change. The restaurant charges $3 extra for fish. I find it to be sort of misleading. The menu states the French toast comes with a choice of meat or fish for $12. It should be mentioned fish $3 extra. Honestly I didn't make a big fuss about it. I wanted to mention because I can see how one will make a big deal out of this. I won't allow this to deter me from returning.

Yelp
We were looking for a spot with an authentic Cajun breakfast and thanks to Yelp we found it. The fried catfish was light and flaky, the hot sausage was spicy and flavorful, and the French toast was delicious also. The place is small and cozy. The owner waited on us because she was short staffed. She embodied southern hospitality to the fullest. We definitely will be back next time we're in NOLA.

Yelp
Café Porche is the true definition of a hidden gem. My wife and I recently visited for breakfast. When we arrived, we weren't even sure if we were in the right place because the restaurant is a bit hidden. The area seemed vacant without any business nearby, but Café Porche is tucked in the back of a property behind a small white house with blue and yellow trim. I had the Lake View Morning which came with Catfish, Eggs, and Grits. The Catfish was fresh, light, and flakey with a perfectly light crisp seasoned breading. This was some of the best catfish I have ever had. The eggs were cooked a perfect yolky over easy and the grits were creamy and savory. My wife had the Good Morning Sweetness. She said it was some of the best French Toast she had ever had. Café Porche is a must visit in New Orleans.

Yelp
The experience overall was wonderful. I was greeted by the owner and told there may be a wait since it was raining and the outside tables weren't open and she was the only one waiting tables. Everything is made to order. Who can argue about time when you're getting fresh food prepared? We briefly waited upstairs and we're helped within minutes by the owner's brother. The food was delicious. I had mimosas, a cup of gumbo and French Toast. My friend has shrimp and grits. We will definitely go back to try other dishes. Everything was simply amazing.
google avatar

James M.

Yelp
The owner was a wonderful host. The food was flavorful and service was very attentive. If I'm here on Friday 10/10 coming back to get those pork chops!

Fergus H.

Yelp
I had one of the best brunches I've ever eaten here! The liver and grits were incredibly delicious and the owner and her brother Matthew were a delight to chat with. It's my first trip to New Orleans and so far, this is definitely the highlight.
google avatar

Nandita B.

Yelp
Absolutely phenomenal. You have to eat here. Family owned, homely, with the characteristic southern hospitality, and the most delicious food. A group of us had rented a house literally right next to this cafe and we ate breakfast 2 out of the 3 days we were in Nola. Cornella, the sweet lady running this cafe was so warm and welcoming and fed us some delicious foods. Every single thing we ordered off of the breakfast menu (and I think we covered it all between the 10 of us) was fantastic. But in my opinion the winner was shrimp and grits - just thinking about it right now is making me hungry. Saucy, spicy, savory, super fresh shrimp on a bed of creamy, hardy grits. NOMS!! The French toast was also one of the best I have ever had. 150% recommend this place.
google avatar

Stephanie S.

Yelp
If you are looking for brunch in NOLA, this is a must stop! It doesn't look like much from the curb but the actual restaurant is cute and cozy. The food has great flavor and the coffee hot and strong.

Yelp
Phenomenal place that my family and I happened to stumble upon for a short weekend trip to Nola. Beautiful place, with a comforting environment and setup. The service was great, there seemed to only be one server and she did an amazing job! She personally thanked us for coming and it was genuine and heartfelt. Although I didn't take any pictures, the food was Delicious!! I have the 'Good Morning Sweetness' which is a french toast breakfast and it was so good! I tried some of their fried catfish and WOW. I was mad I didn't get it for myself! No complaints about this great meal !

Tori W.

Yelp
Amazing service and the food was so good!! It was nice and quiet, love this place. The owner was amazing as well!

Yelp
Three years later and the food is just as delicious! I love this place ! I came right before the pandemic during Mardi Gras in 2020 with my boyfriend and we had such a memorable experience with the great food and staff. This time I went with my best friend during our girls' trip because I found out they were still opened and this place remains a gem ! Our waitress who was sweet and bubbly suggested we end our vacation on a high note with their delicious mimosa carafe . I ordered the catfish with cheese grits and a biscuit and my bff ordered the shims and fried grits. To show some level or self restraint we shared a cup of red beans and rice :) ! Everything was fresh and flavorful '! The fish tasted like it was freshly caught , the grits were cooked to perfection . Perfect texture and right amount of cheese . And the fried grits were heavenly . Imagine biting into a mozzarella stick, except it's filled with warm grits . The sauce on top of the shrimp was similar to a seafood and corn chowder , nice and creamy and blasting with flavor . And the show stopper was the cup of red beans and rice - packed with meat sauce and flavor . I swear every bite for better !!! The owner came over and talked with us as well and her spirit pours into the ambience of the restaurant . She's filled with joy, attentive, and seems genuinely happy to have us eating her food ! We will make this a regular stop whenever we are in NOLA!

Yelp
This was everything and more! Came on a Sunday around 10:30. Sat down at a table right away. We had the sweet tea and mimosa to drink. We ordered the French toast with fried fish, and the fried grits and shrimp and everything was incredible. The people/owners and workers were so friendly. I wish this place was open during the week too! Highly recommend!

Yelp
Absolutely DELICIOUS. Get out of the French Quarter and get some REAL FOOD from New Orleans. The small staff is helpful and welcoming. And, the food is amazing. Seasoned perfectly. We didn't add salt, pepper, or Hot sauce... and I LOVE hot sauce. The smothered Pork chops over grits was fantastic. The French Toast was so good I was upset I only ordered 2 pieces! I can't wait to go back and try the fried fish. Trust me, do yourself a favor..!

Yelp
Great breakfast spot. Nice quaint little restaurant. Staff is Great, very hospitable. Fast service, food was hot and fresh!

Yelp
Wow! I can't believe it's taken me so long to try this hidden gem. I went on a Saturday around 1pm and almost thought they were closed from the street as there were no cars and it looked dark inside. So glad I checked! We were the only two dining in and we felt like VIP thanks to the owner, Coronella! We enjoyed every single bite (& sip): -French toast (probably the best I've ever had) -Shrimp and grits (amazing, in my top 3) -Mimosas (very good...not sure what the juice was, she said it was her house special) My ONLY request (bc I enjoyed the food so much) is to have more days/hours of operation. Can't wait to go back!
google avatar

Yelp
I really loved Brunch today with my daughter This hidden gem is definitely worth raving about! I enjoyed the Fried Catfish Breakfast w/grits, eggs over medium, fruit, and a mimosa. I ate half before I remembered to take the pic! It was served piping hot. My daughter enjoyed the French toast. Simply delectable! This quaint restaurant has a welcoming atmosphere. The openers greeted and served us, ensuring we had all we needed. I loved this! I will definitely be back

Yelp
I brought my dad here on his last morning in the city. Had been wanting to try it for a while, so we walked over (it's very close to home) for our first meal of the day. I ordered the Good Morning Sweetness--thick-cut French toast with a side of meat. I requested scrambled eggs instead. My dad ordered the smothered pork chop, which they said would take a little longer than mine. It ended up taking 45 minutes and I was good and hangry by the time the food came. It was sooo damn good though... so satisfying given how hungry I was. The French toast was some of the best I've ever had, rich and tender in the middle with lovely fresh strawberries. My dad was also quite happy with his pork chop. Said it was excellent. I'll likely go back, I'll just tell whoever's with me to order something quicker. Lol

Paige L.

Yelp
This was just down the street from air bnb and it was so delicious and great service! The French Toast was amazing and the coffee was really good. Highly recommend if you're looking for delicious local breakfast and coffee .

Jocelyn S.

Yelp
This place is the absolute best place I've been. The owner is so sweet and made our group feel so special and welcome. The food is delicious and the drinks are amazing. The place is quaint and cozy. I will definitely will be coming back and would recommend this to anyone coming to New Orleans.

Nuronn K.

Yelp
Excellent location with great food and warm staff, can't wait to go back to NOLA to go again!

Yelp
Full menu only 2 days a week, should be posted on top, wasted trip over there. Hmmm....

Yelp
This is a great little hidden gem! The fried catfish was perfect and fresh. The fried grit cake was also very good. I recommend trying this place out!

Yelp
I finally got back to my favorite breakfast spot! Cafe Porche is Located at 1625 Baronne Street in a quaint tuck away with a peaceful courtyard, charming attached Snowball stand and a staff to match. I ordered the Carol BeBelle (Fried Grits) and added Shrimp in a creamy Seafood Sauce, Smothered Potatoes and Good Morning Sweetness (French Toast, Fresh Fruit and Turkey Patties.) First of all I've always seen Fried Grits as an uneccessary evil. Lol. Each time I've had it it's underwhelming and just plain Ol pointless in its entirety. Concept as well as technique and taste have never wooed me. THIS.FRIED.GRITS.IS.EVERYTHING FRIED GRITS IS SUPPOSED TO BE BUT RARELY IS. Creamy inside, flaky outside and downright GOOD! OUTSTANDING!! The sauce and shrimp are meticulously seasoned and the perfect compliment to a dish that honestly could otherwise be thoroughly enjoyed by itself. Not salty, not too spicy, not just OKAY. Cafe Porche has also mastered something that I've searched all through this city for and they never get it right: BREAKFAST POTATOES! My God! Whyyyyy is it so hard? For like....Everyone?! I've tried every place from greasy spoon diners to boring and bougie restaurants and it's always wrong. Too dry, too hard, not seasoned, FROZEN! Always something. Man these potatoes are right! And SEASONED! Say it with me "SEEEEAAAASOOONNED!" Lol Even the French Toast is a cut above the classic culinary norm. Starting with the most simple change: using French Bread instead of flimsy toast. That's it's. Something so simple makes such a big difference in taste and texture. I could go on and on about this gem, but you guys are just gonna have to go! You will be pleased! Cooking is always about love and passion and it's so very obvious that it goes into the food at Cafe Porche and I love them for it!! Perfection. I finally got back to my favorite breakfast spot! This a hidden gem! The food was fantastic and cooked perfectly! Very friendly staff with excellent customer service. Definitely will be one of my breakfast stops when in the area.

Yelp
The only thing missing is one of those flag signs to alert you to the great food that this restaurant has to offer. Tucked into the back of their snowball shop is this little quaint place that packs a big punch with their food choice. I had fried grits before but the ones here are much better. The catfish was fried to perfection. Our server was knowledgeable and courteous. My wife & I will definitely be back and will bring a few friends.
